The Barack Obama Effect on Black Men

When I was a boy, I would overhear older black men talking about this evil, mythical figure called “The Man.” I thought there was Batman, Spiderman, Superman, and The Man.

The Man was accused of selfishly hoarding power and resources that prevented black men from getting jobs, owning businesses, and having greater opportunities in general. As a young impressionable child, The Man seemed like one bad mutha. It took me some time for me to figure out that The Man was the white man.

As humorous and antiquated as this notion may be, it surprises me that The Man still lives in the minds of many black men today. After listening to Barack Obama make his presentation at the Democratic National Convention, which coincided with the 45th anniversary of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, there is a palpable energy, optimism, and pride that I’m sensing in my conversations with other black men. An awakening that’s almost spiritual. A fertile synergy that can produce the seeds of a movement – a black male movement.

While the women’s movement has been legitimized and publicized in the press since their struggles for liberation began, there is a potential – and much needed – black man’s movement that’s underway. Of course the media has not picked up on it because they don’t consider it newsworthy or noteworthy, but conscious black people, especially those who desire and seek financial, mental, and vocational liberation for themselves and their children, are well aware of it.

It’s the effect that Barack Obama’s campaign and legacy will have on black men.

To really understand the magnitude of this effect you have to go back in history to another speech. It was given at a graduating ceremony for Howard University in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the passage of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin.

“You do not wipe away the scars of centuries by saying: ‘Now, you are free to go where you want, do as you desire, and choose the leaders you please.’ You do not take a man who for years has been hobbled by chains, liberate him, bring him to the starting line of a race, saying, ‘you are free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe you have been completely fair…This is the next and more profound stage of the battle for civil rights. We seek not just freedom but opportunity-not just legal equity but human ability-not just equality as a right and a theory, but equality as a fact and as a result.”

The bill was later amended to cover discrimination on the basis of gender. That amendment largely benefited white women and opened the floodgates for their entry into the workplace.

As more white women migrated into the workplace in 1964, occupying jobs they were “allowed” to have and armed with new legislature and a spirit of liberation that would gain momentum and evolve into the women’s movement, black women would soon follow suit and be deployed in less desirable roles while black men would essentially be displaced; spawning an employment imbalance in the black community where the men consistently have higher rates of unemployment and underemployment than black women.

This statistic holds true to this very day.

When I Juxtapose today’s work environment with yesterday’s, I see that black men still comprise the bulk of the work force that’s relegated to manual labor or undesirable jobs with marginal pay. I searched, but did not find, statistical data on the ethnic composition of the labor force of FedEx and UPS, but through observation, I’m willing to bet they are among the top – if not 1 and 2 – employers of black men, closely followed by any company that provides security (guard) services.

They are all jobs that place physical demands on their employees. Black men have always been used and valued for their physical strength since they stepped (chained) foot into this country. After all this time, we are still more likely to be paid millions for our muscles than our minds.

The Barack Obama Effect will cause the pendulum to swing in the other direction.

In the 60s, gainful employment was denied due to racism, fear, and distrust. Racism is not what leads to unfavorable employment conditions that black men have to overcome, it’s negative perceptions about black men as a group that have proven to be a greater economic and psychological barrier to our success. It’s the internalization of these perceptions that impact us. There’s extensive research that proves how devastating these perceptions can be when internalized by young black males.

According to Dr. Alvin Poussaint, psychiatrist and author of Lay My Burden Down: Unraveling Suicide and the Mental Health Crisis among African Americans over the last twenty years, suicide rates among young black males between the ages of 15 and 19 increased 114%. Head coach of the Indianapolis Colts lost his 18 year old son to suicide in 2005 and finally the epidemic caught the media’s attention, albeit for a fleeting moment.

With commonplace scenarios such as fragmented families that are often headed by single mothers, lack of male leadership, negative influences, and continued discrimination in our schools from teachers who do not embrace, nurture, or support young black males as readily as their white peers, it’s no wonder that so many young black males fabricate false bravado and a cool facade to camouflage low self-esteem, and often seeking validation through sports, entertainment and sexual conquests. Even worse, it creates a fixed mindset.

Author Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., who is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology, notes that psychologists know that negative stereotypes and labels are harmful, but they are still discovering just how negative labels harm achievement. She writes in her book Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success, that a fixed mindset limits achievement. It fills people’s mind with interfering thoughts. It makes effort disagreeable, and it leads to inferior learning strategies. What’s more, it makes other people into judges instead of allies.

My father told me at an early age that black men have to work two to three times harder than white men to achieve the same success. We also have to work smarter to be as successful. There are political, psychological, racial, and legal elements at play in every arena that we thrive in. It behooves us to know how to best navigate through situations that pose a threat to our success.

Whether it’s working harder or smarter, extra “work” is inevitable. Dealing with the inertia that stems from apathy in many of our neighborhoods, communities, and homes; dealing with lingering fears and stereotypes, and having to exert constant effort to fit in with white men who don’t feel as comfortable with us or in our presence. Historically, our prosperity as black men has always been tied to our ability to successfully interface with white men.

I imagine that living life as a paraplegic or without one’s sight is probably harder in terms of difficulty and adaptability, but certainly not capability. That’s where the line gets drawn and a new way of thinking can begin. Yes, being a black man is harder for some black men and it certainly has some societal drawbacks, but like those with the aforementioned physical challenges, we must view them as just that; challenges not disabilities, and certainly not handicaps. Being a black man is hard, but being a black man who is president will be inconceivably hard.

What do we find when we delve into Barack Obama’s background? Let’s see:

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Kansas-born mother, Ann Dunham (who is a distant relative of Robert Duvall) and a Kenyan-born father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., who met while both were attending the University of Hawaii, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student.

His mother and father divorced when he was two and his mother re-married and they relocated to Indonesia. His father attended Harvard, traveled around the world on official business for Kenya and saw Obama only a few times by the time he turned 10, at which point he was sent back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents so that he could attend the highly-regarded non-sectarian private Punahou School where he graduated from.

Obama studied for two years at Occidental College in California before transferring to Columbia University, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations. He became a community organizer for a small Chicago church-based group for three years, helping poor South Side residents cope with a wave of plant closings. He then attended Harvard Law School, and in 1990 became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review.

He turned down a prestigious judicial clerkship, choosing instead to practice civil-rights law back in Chicago, representing victims of housing and employment discrimination and working on voting-rights legislation. He also began teaching at the University of Chicago Law School. Eventually he ran as a Democrat for the state senate seat from his district, which included both Hyde Park (where he currently lives) and some of the poorest ghettos on the South Side, and won.

In 2004 Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat, representing Illinois, and gained national attention by giving a rousing and well-received keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston; won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word for the CD version of his autobiography “Dreams From My Father” (2006); won his second Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for “The Audacity of Hope” (2008); sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Presidency (2008).

It’s a brief overview that highlights great accomplishments, but his origins are similar to most black men I know: He came from a single parent household, had a strained relationship with his father, a close relationship with his grandparents, and had to make choices.

Law school, community organizer, civil-rights activist, Grammy award winner, member of the U.S. Senate, Presidential candidate – they are all talent and value based decisions. None of them would be feasible if Barack Obama did not truly believe that these goals were possible and put forth the consistent effort to reach them.

What will happen if Barack Obama gets elected president? What will happen when black men stop blaming the man, and start being The Man? Every door will be open. Every American dream – including being president – can be a reality.

Our view and definition of The Man will finally be flipped; replaced by a positive self-image and greater awareness of the super powers we possess, but seldom activate. We will become more motivated to utilize resources, get better jobs, start successful businesses, and capitalize on opportunities because the leadership and role model that so many of us have lacked, will have emerged in the highest visible position in the country – the presidency.

In short, The Barack Obama Effect will mean that our statute of limitations on excuses will have officially run out. The fixed mindset that has plagued black men for centuries from the aforementioned internalization of negative perceptions will be repaired. The Effect Of Barack Obama will germinate a growth mindset which will benefit black men for centuries to come.

Dweck writes: The growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. The growth mindset takes the teeth out of stereotypes and makes people better able to fight back. They don’t believe in permanent inferiority. She also writes: Prejudice is a deeply ingrained societal problem…a growth mindset helps people see prejudice for what it is – someone else’s view of them.

The Barack Obama Effect will inspire little black boys to find the courage to choose the road less traveled and explore the many options available to them. The Barack Obama Effect will motivate the parents of little black boys to instill an authentic, deeply rooted confidence which allows and enables them to have personal and professional lives that are only limited by the boundaries of their imagination and efforts, not lack of opportunities. The Barack Obama Effect will linger because black men and black boys will know that in their hearts and in their minds, they are The Man – the only man – who controls their own thoughts, actions, and destinies.

Every moment of our lives is made up of choices. Deciding whether to have a meal or not, is a choice. With choices come consequences: deciding to eat is a choice and being full afterwards is the consequence. Or perhaps you’ll decide to eat out, and at the restaurant, you meet a friend and you dine together. You chat and something in your conversation leads to another situation; if you hadn’t eaten out and met your friend, perhaps the course of your life would be different.

Actor Shawn Christian returns to daytime drama as he now joins the cast of NBC’s longest-running soap Days of Our Lives. Christian plays the role of Dr. Daniel Jonas, a new staff at Salem University Hospital .

The actor previously appeared as Ross Rayburn on ABC’s One Life to Live and as Mike Kasnoff on As the World Turns. Among his other notable TV show stints were on CSI: Miami , Will & Grace, Murder in the Hamptons , Friends, Beverly Hills 30210 and Charmed.

Born December 18, 1965 in Grand Rapids , Michigan , Christian moved to Chicago after graduating from Ferris State University in 1989. His decision to move was largely influenced by his passion for performing. He started with stage productions and commercials until he became the first ever male spokes model on Star Search during the show’s 1994 season. In the same year, he became part of the second–longest running American TV soap opera As the World Turns. He starred on the show for three years.

He met wife Deborah Quinn in 1991, while both of them were auditioning for a Chicago print advertisement. Christian is also step-dad to model and Summerland’s actress Taylor Cole. Christian played the character of Johnny Durant on the mentioned program. He also starred in Last Chance, a recipient of the Audience Award for Best Short Film during the Hamptons International Film Fest.

Among his film line-ups for this year are Meet Dave, which stars Eddie Murphy, Killer Moves, a romantic cop thriller and Small Town Saturday Night, which is written and directed by Ryan Craig. All three movies are currently in post-production.

According to reports, Christian began taping for Days on February 11. He had scenes with Chelsea (Rachel Melvin), Bo (Peter Reckell), Hope (Kristian Alfonso) and Victor (John Aniston). His scenes are scheduled to air in early March.

x-ray tech School choices

The career of a radiographer, or an x-ray tech, involves dealing one on one with patients who are ill or have potentially broken bones. Sometimes people in this professions are called x-ray techs or x-ray technologists. These people put a patient’s mind to convenience by explaining the entire process before and during the procedure. They get pictures that are then sent to radiologists to evaluate and diagnose. Safety is important so that the proper precautions are taken to protect against radiation.

Requirements Needed
Before an achievable student can apply for xray tech institutions they must have completed other courses. These consist of the basic healthcare level and may be an associate’s or bachelor’s college diploma. One of these levels can be obtained through a regular brick and mortar college or through any number of online qualification programs. Some popular qualifications are Bachelor’s of Science in Health Care Management, a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Services Management as well as Associate’s diplomas in Allied Health Science or Healthcare Administration. All of these are available online at colleges such as South University, Penn Foster College and Jones International University.

Application and Faculties
Once the basic heath care qualification is obtain then an application may be filled out for the x ray technicians school. Each application process is varied slightly and must be obtained from each individual school. Some of the top 10 ranked online facilities are those such as: South University, American Intercontinental University, Virginia College, Rasmussen College, Ashford University, Penn Foster College, Herzing College, Baker College Online, Bryant and Straton College and Kaiser University. Several of these offer the Associate’s college degrees needed in order to apply for xray tech school. This allows for an easier transition from one form of study to another. Brick and mortar colleges that offer x-ray technician courses are: ECPI College of Technology with locations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, Brown Mackie College with locations in Georgia, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, California College San Diego, Kaplan College with locations throughout California to name a few. Other options for radiology courses are hospitals and vocational-technical facilities.

The Inner Workings of the Course Program
The actual diploma is that of Radiography. An accredited course in this subject must be completed. The proper accredited Radiography program will enmesh students in clinical and classroom work that involves a variety of elements. A serious program will address patient care procedures, pathology, principles of imaging, anatomy and physiology, radiation physics, medical terminology, positioning of patients, radiation protection, radiobiology and medical ethics. The medical ethics comes into play because x ray technician are forbidden to discuss the results found upon an x-ray. Once classes have been completed there is still a matter of obtaining certification by ARRT, or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Types of Levels
There are varying diplomas available for x ray tech. The range and length of the program depends upon what type of certification the student desires. A basic certification takes only one year. Others range from two to four years. These involve Associate’s or Bachelor’s certifications and may help students obtain jobs at hospitals easier than basic certification. Most qualification programs of one year are generally open to those existing xray technicians that want to specialize in MRI or CT. The one-year program is open to other medical fields that are looking to change their careers and become x-ray tech. Anyone looking to move up in this particular medical practice to a position of a teacher, administrator, or supervisor must have a Bachelor’s qualification but preferably a Master’s college degree.

Where Job is Found
Actual trained x ray tech can go straight from school to work in any variety of medical facilities. These include hospitals, radiology clinics, convalescent homes and dental offices. These are just a few of the opportunities. Some doctor’s offices now have an x-ray room available and therefore must have an x-ray tech on staff. Prospective students should keep in mind the number of hospitals, doctor’s offices and other medical facilities located all over the continental United States. The rationale so many students choose this field is often the a lot of jobs available at any given time. This is genuine regardless of what the economy is like.

Alternative Media Companies Take Advantage of Opportunities

New York City’s Times Square is possibly the center of the universe when speaking in terms of outdoor advertising. As in years past, New Year’s Eve 2009 brought together some of the biggest brand names and, as usual, out-of-home advertising was the star of the show. 2009′s celebration led sponsors to get a bit more creative and optimistic (not to mention frisky) in an economy that saw much more pessimism and stagnation than in years past. From confetti wishes and kissing stages to wind-powered digital billboards, it was truly a sight to see.

At midnight, Times Square was raining hopes and dreams – literally. One popular candy brand’s newest candy bar sponsored a website for people to submit their resolutions, goals, and hopes for 2009. The website was set up during the weeks leading up to the new year where people could submit their wishes. The messages were then printed on tiny pieces of paper and dropped over Times Square at midnight, showering New York City with over a ton of wish-covered confetti.

Echoing this upbeat tempo, a soda company’s new ad campaign focused on youthful optimism that blanketed the billboards of NYC. The campaign created uplifting words out of the brand’s redesigned logo. As part of the NYE festivities, the company unleashed one thousand balloons (complete with their new logo, of course) on Times Square, minutes before midnight.

The best use of technology by an alternative advertising campaign was to utilize the camera-equipped cell phones of the millions of celebrators across the nation. The campaign encouraged partiers to send in their cell phone pictures. Approved pictures were then sent to a massive, 19 by 34 foot tall digital display in Times Square.

The innovation and preparedness continued for the inauguration of 44th president of the United States of America. It was obvious to advertisers that the event would provide a perfect platform for companies to reach millions of Americans with their own messages of change. A car company turned the opportunity into a road trip, beginning in Detroit and ending in Washington, D.C. just in time for the inauguration. A caravan of new, hybrid vehicles carried the theme of change to D.C., making stops at Ohio State University, Penn State University, and Howard University.

Mirroring Obama’s own message of hope and optimism, one company created a massive presence at the inauguration with messages of change and unity, residing on the city’s billboards, buses, etc. In another out-of-home tactic, street teams handed out commemorative buttons, hats, and scarves that flaunt those same messages of hope. The result was a well monitored, integrated campaign taking advantage of multiple types of alternative advertising and guerrilla marketing strategies.

Protein Shake Breakfast — Stay Thin Without Exercising With This 3-Point Plan, New Study

Everyone knows that exercising can help speed your metabolism and help burn fat. But did you know that nutrition is actually more important than exercise when it comes to staying lean? And that if you cut back on exercising, you can still stay lean as long as you eat well? (That’s where the best protein drinks come in!)

A recent study conducted by Loyola University, University of Ibadan, Howard University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and University of Wisconsin, and published in the September 2008 issue of the journal Obesity, showed some very interesting results when it comes to exercise versus nutrition.

The study took a group of obese African American women from metropolitan Chicago (average weight: 184 pounds) and compared them to slender women in rural Nigeria (average weight: 127 pounds). It was expected that the slender Nigerians would be much more physically active and burning more calories than the obese Americans, but the researchers found that both groups of women, slender and obese, had the same activity/energy expenditure levels!

Their diets, however, were dramatically different. The women from Chicago ate 40 – 45% more fat and plenty of high processed foods. The women from Nigeria, on the other hand, ate plenty of fiber and unprocessed carbs and skipped the fat and animal protein, or just ate small portions of them.

So what can you do to eat right to stay lean? Follow This High Protein Shake 3-Point Plan!

#1. Eat the right ratio of foods at every meal. What’s the right ratio? A fist-size of lean protein, a fist-size of unprocessed carbs and a thumb-size of healthy fats. Your body needs the carbs to:

• provide glucose to fuel your body and brain — glucose = fuel

• provide fiber to curb hunger and stabilize blood sugar

• burn body fat — if you don’t get a steady supply of glucose your body thinks it’s in emergency “starvation” mode and stores everything as fat instead of using it as energy You need the protein and fats to turn the carbs into glucose and create that steady supply.

#2. Cut out processed carbs and other processed foods. They provide no nutritional value whatsoever. And when you eat processed foods, your body maintains excess water weight. It also stores fat because it’s in emergency “starvation” mode because it’s not getting any nutrition.

#3. Eat a high protein shake for breakfast and plan ahead by having the ingredients on hand. This is so you can actually do points one and two. These shakes are easy to make, taste great and contain the optimum nutritional ratio. Plus, you can have them as a snack or as a meal substitute. To make the best protein shakes, add the following ingredients to a blender and mix to desired smoothness: liquid (water, non-fat milk, plain soy milk or plain almond milk); pure protein shake powder; good fat (omega oil, flax; green powder; fresh fruit; ice; optional essences and spices (vanilla, mint, cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger).

Ready to stay thin without exercising all the time? Start by getting the ingredients for your fast-metabolism smoothies that you can eat all day long…

Natural Whey Protein — How Bad Are Bad Carbs? Worse Than No Exercise, New Findings On What Makes You Thin

Here’s the skinny on getting skinny. What you eat is more important than how much you exercise. New findings support this and that’s why it’s so important to eat well — and stay away from processed carbs like white flour and sugar! This means eating healthy meals and snacks that contain lean protein like organic whey, healthy fats like nuts and seeds, and unprocessed carbs like fresh vegetables or green drink superfood. It’s true — if you sustain your body on bad carbs and fatty meats, you’re going to pack on the fat. Whereas if you get sufficient protein and unprocessed carbs and fats, you can stay thin even without being physically active.

Let’s look at the findings so you can see for yourself…

Researchers from John Hopkins, Howard University, University of Wisconsin, University of Ibadan and Loyola University compared the eating and exercise habits of two groups of women. The first group were rural Nigerians averaging 127 pounds, and the second group were African Americans from Chicago averaging 184 pounds. Here’s what they found:

1.The lean Nigerians were NOT more physically active than the overweight women from Chicago. This was surprising because most of us think that thin people are more active than fat people. Not necessarily true.

2. The thin Nigerians had diets high in good, unprocessed carbs and fiber and low in fats and protein from animals, while the obese Americans had diets that were 40-45% higher in fats and processed “bad” carbs and other foods.

What does this tell us? Even if you don’t exercise, you can be slender as long as you eat unprocessed, healthy foods. But eat bad carbs and fatty protein and you’ll gain weight.

How to keep the weight off no matter how active you are? Do This No-Bad-Carb All Natural Whey Protein Shake 3-Step Plan!

STEP 1 – Stop eating bad carbs altogether. And stop eating other processed items as well! Processed foods make you bloat with extra water weight and give you zero nutrition. Without nutrition, your body thinks it’s starving and you tend to eat more and store more fat.

STEP 2 – Start eating the big three at every meal — that’s unprocessed carbs, lean protein and healthy fats, And eat the right amounts: a fist-size of lean protein, a fist-size of unprocessed carbs and a thumb-size of healthy fats. Your body needs them to:

Turn the carbs into glucose and create that steady supply of fuel Provide fiber to curb hunger and stabilize blood sugar Burn body fat — if you don’t get a steady supply of glucose your body thinks it’s in emergency “starvation” mode and stores everything as fat instead of using it as energy

STEP 3 — Have an all natural whey protein shake every morning and keep the main ingredients stocked. Natural whey protein powder shakes contain the perfect nutrition ratio mentioned in step 2. And they’re easy to make! Plus you can have a natural whey protein shake as a meal replacement or a snack.

To make the best shakes, to desired smoothness: liquid (water, non-fat milk, plain soy milk or plain almond milk); natural whey isolate protein powder; good fat (omega oil, flax; green powder; fresh fruit; ice; optional essences and spices (vanilla, mint, cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger).

        Early years

Woodson is the youngest of three siblings, with whom he had close relationships. His father, the late James Woodson, was African-American, and his mother, Linda Jo, is white; they were married providing a stable home for Joe, Jamie and Rod . Woodson attended R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played defensive back and a variety of offensive skill positions and was all-state his junior and senior seasons. in addition to football, he won both the high and low hurdles state championships in both his junior and senior seasons; and played varsity basketball his junior and senior seasons, making all conference his senior year.

College career

Woodson accepted a full scholarship to play football at Purdue University, in part because of a desire to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. Woodson played primarily as a defensive back and kick returner, but also saw time on offense as a running back and wide receiver. He was named an All-American defensive back in 1985 and 1986, and was a three time All-Big Ten first team selection. In his final collegiate game, Woodson gained over 150 of combined rushing and receiving yards, in addition to making ten tackles and forcing a fumble, leading Purdue to a victory over arch-rival Indiana.

Woodson left Purdue with 13 individual records, notably tying the school record with eleven career interceptions. He currently is ranked in the top ten in career interceptions, solo tackles, total tackles, passes deflected, and kickoff return yardage as a Boilermaker.

In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Woodson was also an accomplished track and field athlete at Purdue, and twice awarded All-America honors. He currently holds the school records in both the 60 and 110 meter hurdles, events in which he earned five Big Ten championships. In 1984, he qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 meter hurdles, but elected to continue his football career in the NFL after graduating from Purdue with a degree in criminal justice.

Woodson was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Pro football career

In 1987, Woodson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 10th overall draft pick. He returned punts and played defensive cornerback for Pittsburgh through the 1996 season. On November 22, 1987 he was listed third on the depth chart in a game against the division rival Cincinnati Bengals played at Cincinnati Riverfront Stadium, Woodson was inserted into the secondary. In the final minute of the second quarter, he recorded his first career interception when he picked off a Boomer Esiason pass.

He was a fan favorite and a banner that hung for years in Three Rivers Stadium stated: “Rod Is God”. A highlight came in 1995 when Woodson became the first player to return from reconstructive knee surgery in the same season. That year he tore his ACL against the Detroit Lions in the first game and returned to play in the Super Bowl XXX between the Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys just 19 weeks later. In that game, he broke up a pass intended for Michael Irvin, hopped up and pointed at his reconstructed knee. In a game against the Houston Oilers, Woodson hit Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon on a cornerback blitz. The hit gave Moon a concussion and forced him to leave the game.

Woodson’s career took a somewhat nomadic turn after free agency from Pittsburgh, after the Rooney family elected not to renew his contract over a pay dispute as well as the salary cap. (The team had a similar dispute with Franco Harris in 1984 and later with Alan Faneca in 2008.) Although he remained to raise his family in Pittsburgh and later made amends with the Rooneys, he hopped between three additional franchises, becoming one of the few modern cornerbacks to successfully make a transition to the safety position, following in the footsteps of Ronnie Lott. Woodson signed with the San Francisco 49ers for the 1997 season, the Baltimore Ravens for the years 1998 to 2001 (where he won Super Bowl XXXV), and the Oakland Raiders for 2002 and 2003 (where he appeared in his third Super Bowl). In the Raiders 2002 Super Bowl season, 37-year old Woodson led the NFL in interceptions (8) for the first time in his career. His last interception came on November 16, 2003 against the Minnesota Vikings Daunte Culpepper.

NFL records and accomplishments

Woodson is among the NFL’s all time leaders in games played as a defensive back and interceptions. In his 17 NFL seasons, Woodson recorded 71 interceptions, 1,483 interception return yards, 32 fumble recoveries (15 offensive and 17 defensive), 137 fumble return yards, 4,894 kickoff return yards, 2,362 punt return yards, and 17 touchdowns (12 interception returns, 1 fumble return, 2 kickoff returns, 2 punt returns). He holds the league record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with 12, and is tied with 11 other players for the record for most fumble recoveries in a single game (3). His 1,483 interception return yards are also an NFL record. His 32 fumble recoveries are a record amongst defensive players. His 71 interceptions rank 3rd all time.

Woodson was named to the Pro Bowl eleven times, a record for a defensive back. He was also the first player to earn trips to the Pro Bowl at cornerback, safety and kick returner. He was named 1993′s NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He was also a 7 time All-Pro selection. Woodson finished second to Darrell Green in the 1988 NFL Fastest Man Contest.

In 1994, he was named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team. What made it notable was that Woodson was one of only five active players to be named to the team. The others were Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Reggie White and Ronnie Lott. In 1999, he was ranked number 87 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. The College Football News has also honored him as one of the 100 greatest players of the 20th century.

In 2007, he was ranked number 22 on USA Today list of the 25 best NFL players of the past 25 years.

It is unlikely that the Steelers will remove Woodson’s number 26 from circulation, however, since the number is currently being worn by longtime cornerback Deshea Townsend, who as of the 2008 season has now played longer with the Steelers than Woodson did. (The team drafted Townsend in 1998 around the same time that Woodson signed with the archrival Ravens, and still had an acrimonious relationship with the Rooneys at the time.) Mel Blount’s number 47 has also conspicuously remained in circulation since his retirement after the 1983 season.

On January 31, 2009, Woodson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility becoming the 18th Steelers-related person to be enshrined. Woodson named his good friend and business associate Tracy Foster as his presenter. Foster went to Indiana to play basketball for Bob Knight. Foster runs Woodson car dealership in Pittsburgh.

Retirement

Woodson was released by the Oakland Raiders on July 27, 2004 after failing his team physical. His replacement at free safety for the Raiders was Stuart Schweigert, who coincidentally, broke Woodson’s career interception record at Purdue.

He now helps coach the defense at Valley Christian Senior High in Dublin, California along with former Raider John Parrella. Woodson lives in Pleasanton, California with his wife Nickie and their five children . His son, Demitrius, plays safety and wide receiver there as well as kick returner.

Since 1994, Woodson has operated an annual youth football camp, the Woodson/Fabini Football Camp, on the grounds of his former high school. He is also a partner in Woodson Motorsports, a BMW motorcycle dealership and repair shop in Fort Wayne.

Currently Woodson splits his time between NFL Network studios in Los Angeles, his home in Pleasanton, and his cottage in Coldwater, Michigan. He was also part of the studio team for BBC Sport’s NFL coverage in 2007, including Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLIII.

Rod Woodson sponsored a charity benefit dinner and auction on July 25, 2009 at the Oakland Coliseum – just two weeks before he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All proceeds went to the Football and Scholarship programs at Valley Christian School, the high school where Rod coaches.

Importance of Leg training

Do you like squats? Do you like training your legs?

THE PROBLEM:
How many of us know guys who are training hard every part of their body but not the legs? Those guys have huge arms, shoulders but their legs are skinny.

And this is not beautiful at all. It does not matter where you are, on the beach on the gym or in other part.
That is not a look a real man should have.

However many guys are lazy and moreover they do not understand the importance of leg training. They say “my legs are huge enough and training them once per month is enough. In 2 years of such attitude you will see how they look and every year will bring more dissonance to their look. And this is not the only reason for training legs. Did you know that leg training will make your body release more testosteron? And more testosterone means more muscles? Yes, more muscles to any body part.

Let’s read what some researchers from the University of Connecticut did.

SOLUTION:

Research by scientists from the University of Connecticut examined the hormonal responses and adaptation to resistance exercise and training. They noted that high-volume, moderate-to-high-intensity weight training, using short rest intervals and stressing a large muscle mass, multiple joint exercises (legs, Chest, Back, shoulders) tended to produce the greatest acute hormonal elevations (notably testosterone and GH). In comparison low-volume, high-intensity resistance training methods using long rest intervals did not induce a similarly high hormonal response. Sports Med 2005; 35(4):339-61

Since an higher volume lead to more testosterone but longer training time lead to less there must be a time factor somewhere that will enable us to conciliate the two. Of course it’s the time of rest between your sets. To cut a long story short, many studies researched that variable, the most significant being by Kraemer et al. This research consisted of two groups, one performing an hypertrophy workout made of sets of 10 RM with a minute of rest between each sets. The other one was a strength training consisting of multiple sets of 5 RM with 3 minutes between each sets. Both groups shown significant increase in serum testosterone, the earlier showing a slightly higher increase.
That indicated that hypertrophy workout do increase testosterone level more than strength training. Also shorter rest periods seem to have the same effect. If 1 minute seem to lead to bigger increase in testosterone level than 3 minutes, then going below 1 minute in hope to increase the testosterone level even more, would greatly impair your short-term recovery.

Tom Platz is considered to have biggest quadriceps.

CONCLUSION:

So if you want to get bigger train your legs and start NOW!

Leg Routine:

Warm up with 2 sets for 15-20 reps

Squats: 4x 20/20/15/15 reps

Seated leg curls 4x 20/20/15/12/

Lying Leg Curls 3x 15/12/12

Your Choice In Chicopee Hotels

If you are visiting the Springfield MA metropolitan area, a great place to stay is a hotel called the Hampton Inn Chicopee. Of the numerous Chicopee Hotels, this is one of the best. Chicopee, often referred to as the “Crossroads of New England” is the second larges city in Western Massachusetts. It’s nickname came from the fact that it is near many larger cities, including Hartford, Boston, Albany and not too far from New York City. It also has a great transportation network and numerous interstates cross right through it. Plus, it is served by two major airports.

Originally inhabited by the Nipmuck Native Americans, the name is a Nipmuck word from the Chekee meaning violent waters or “rapids.” Today, Chicopee has a large Polish population and even held the record for the largest Kielbasa for a number of years before it lost the title to a city in Poland. But, you can still get some of the tastiest Polish food in Chicopee, including kielbasa and pierogi.

There is plenty to do and see in the Springfield Metro Area as well. The Hampton Chicopee is nearby the Brimfield Antique Show, numerous colleges including Mount Holyoke, Elms, Sprinfield, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the Big E Exposition and Six Flags New England.

The Brimfield show, held in May, July and September is the biggest outdoor collectibles and antique show in the world. It began in 1959 and today, the 3000 person population of Brimfield increases to 250,000 including the 5000 or so vendors three times a year when the show is held.

The Naismith Hall of Fame starts with the history of basketball which began in Springfield. James Naismith introduced the game in 1891 at the YMCA. The building itself is a very distinctive structure on the banks of the Connecticut River.

The Hampton Inn Chicopee offers guest rooms with high speed Internet, Cloud Nine Bedding, large HDTV screens, microwaves, refrigerators, and much more. Inside the hotel there is a meeting space that can hold up to 200 people, a business center, indoor pool, fitness room and many more amenities. They also offer free breakfast which you can eat in the hotel or take to go.

Whatever reason you happen to be in the Springfield area, whether it is business or pleasure or both, if you choose the Hampton Inn Chicopee, it is guaranteed you will have a relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable stay.
