Tennessee Volunteers – A Modest Success

The Tennessee Volunteers Football Team, also nicknamed the “Vols,” represents the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in the NCAA division I and is a member of the Southeastern Conference. Their home games are played at the Neyland Stadium located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Phillip Fulmer is currently the head coach of the Volunteers, and has been for the past 17 years. The 1998 college football season was the last championship of the Volunteers.

The University of Tennessee football team had their first season in 1891. In their second season of playing the game in 1892, the Volunteers had their first win, defeating Maryville College with a score of 25-0 in Maryville, Tennessee. In the first five seasons that they competed, they did not have an official coach. Their first head coach was J.A. Pierce. In the following years, the team would have a number of coaches that would stay with the team for only a short time until head coach Zora G. Clevenger was hired in 1911 to guide and train the team. The Shields-Watkins field was built in 1921, named after the financial sponsors of the field, William S. Shields and his wife Alice Watkins. The Shield-Watkins became the Vol’s new home where they were able to develop their game and train harder and better. At that time, it had a seating capacity of 3,200 and prior to being used as a football field, it was used for playing baseball. In 1922, the Vols started wearing orange Jerseys, what would be their team’s color until this day.

In 1926, Robert Neyland, an Army captain and ROTC instructor at the University of Tennessee, became the Vols head coach. Former Vols player Nathan Dougherty, then the chairman of athletics and Dean for the University’s engineering program pressured Neyland to even the score with arch-rivals Vanderbilt, which at that time dominated football in Tennessee. Neylan successfully led the team to surpass the Nashville school. In 1927, under the guidance of Neyland, the Vols got their first South Conference title and in 1928, scored a victory over the highly-favored Alabama team. The first ever football program’s All-American title went to Gene McEver. He led the team in scoring 130 points. To this day, his scoring remains a school record.

After their conference championship, the team lost a number of their star players to the NFL such as quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receivers Andy McCullough and Marcus Nash, and linebacker Leonard Little. The Vols also came from a 42-17 loss in the Orange Bowl against Nebraska and had a five game losing streak to rivals Florida Gators. But beyond all the obstacles the Vols exceeded all expectations in the 1998 season. The team had new quarterback Tee Martin, Peerless Price, and All-American linebacker Al Wilson leading them to win their first-ever national title over Florida State. They finished the season with a record of 13-0 and ended a run of 45-5 in four years. Since their National Championship in 1998, the Vols have had moderate success.

In blepharoplasty, fat, excess skin, and muscle are removed from the eyelids to lift drooping upper eyelids and reduce puffy eye bags that form under the eyes. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be done at the same time. The procedure costs anywhere from ,500 to ,000 and can be done in a hospital, surgical center or office. It normally lasts from one to three hours using general or local anesthesia or sedation.

Like other surgical methods, however, blepharoplasty has risks and complications, and not everyone will benefit from the procedure. Among the many possible bad things a patient can experience after the operation are bleeding, blindness, blurred vision, double vision, difficulty closing the eyes, dry eyes, excessive tearing, and scarring.

“Complications of eyelid surgery, while rare, can cause prolonged healing, change in or loss of vision, unpleasant – looking and painful scars, the inconvenience and cost of further surgery, and the possibility of requiring eye drops or ointment, temporarily or permanently,” warned the people at smartplasticsurgery.com.

Take the case of John McGill, 52, from Cambridgeshire, England, who was assured that eyelid surgery was simple and wouldn’t take long. True enough, he left the surgeon’s office after 25 minutes and that’s when his troubles began.

“There was a lot of swelling and my eyes were sore, itchy and very red. With just the slightest breeze, they would start watering. I went back to the clinic and the surgeon just said to give it time but matters didn’t improve,” he told the BBC News.

Eighteen months after the operation, McGill consulted an eye specialist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital who told him what was wrong: too much skin had been removed from his lower eyelids. It took two more operations to correct this defect after which McGill sued the erring surgeon. He eventually got a six-figure settlement but only after his case dragged on for years.

“It is just unbelievable that surgeons are able to operate like this. The clinic I went to was a well respected high street outlet, not a back street job,” he told the BBC.

Most of us swim for recreational purposes, either in play or as a means of cooling off on a warm day.  Just the feeling of buoyancy in the water can be a great stress reliever, not to mention having all the gravitational pressures removed from our joints, muscles and bones.  But swimming can do so much more than help relieve stress.  We know that any exercise is good exercise, but swimming has many extra benefits that could very well extend the length of one’s life.  Let’s take a look.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, swimming (as a noun) is “the sport or activity of propelling oneself through water using the limbs.”  The act of moving our limbs through water at a rapid rate amounts to aerobic exercise.  Aerobic exercise is that which improves the oxygen system in the body, which in turn benefits the metabolic processes within.  As we strengthen our energy-producing systems, we strengthen all the muscles involved with respiration – our heart and lungs.  By bolstering the heart (remember it is a muscle), the pumping efficiency is improved thus leading to a reduced resting heart rate.  If the heart is allowed to rest, it will live longer – and so will you.  Additionally, aerobics increase the total number of red blood cells running through our body which means we have more energy, better mental health and stronger muscles. 

Alright, aerobic exercise is important but why swimming in particular?  The short answer is low-impact.  Since the human body is of a similar density as water, we float.  The water supports the body, even cushions it; the same cannot be said for running or speed walking.  Those with joint problems or who are recovering from an injury find water work and swimming a very non-injurious activity for rehabilitation and exercise.  In fact, the resistance experienced as the limbs move through the water mean a higher level of activity can take place without risk of injury.  Regular movement and exercise is important at any age, but with the elderly it is important as a means of retaining mobility.  Swimming is a wonderful way for the elderly to get their exercise without fear of injury.
