Diversity: More Than Just Politically Correct

Diversity: More Than Just Politically Correct

Because there seems to be a disconnect between what many hospital management teams are saying and what they are doing, I decided to get to the bottom of the very term. Diversity comes from the word diverse, an adjective meaning unlike. Take a look around your own executive team – is there very much unlike amongst you?

Here’s some interesting news: Cedric Herring, a sociologist from the University of Illinois at Chicago, recently completed a study exploring whether or not diversity actually makes a difference to the bottom line. He examined data from 250 U.S. employers on diversity levels and business performance, and found that there was a direct correlation between diversity and business success.

“Those companies that have very low levels of racial and ethnic minorities have the lowest profits and the lowest market share and the lowest number of customers,” said Herring. “Those that have medium levels do better, and those that have the highest levels do the best.”

Instead of looking at diversity hiring as a win-win, many organizations see hiring people from different backgrounds, cultures and generations as an obligation. They think that having a certain number of minorities on board will mitigate potential PR disasters and keep pace with what other healthcare institutions may be doing. But it’s vital we move beyond mere obligation, and recognize that in addition to Mr. Herring’s findings, there are tremendous advantages to inviting people with different experiences to the executive table. These include:

Complimentary perspectives. Executives who have grown up in other countries approach their work with different ways of thinking. We in the U.S. are action-oriented, quick to make decisions and always on the go. Having people on your team who may be process-oriented (Latin countries, such as Central and South America, Spain, Italy and France), task-oriented (Northern Europe) or role-oriented (Asia and India) can often lend much needed balance.

Fresh ideas and approaches to old problems. Executives with different backgrounds bring different perspectives (see above) and different problem solving skills. A good example of this is Dr. Joy Draft, CEO of Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC. She feels that her background as a critical care physician enhances her ability to establish priorities and allocate time and resources.

When asked how the physician in her surfaces, she says, “It does more so in the decisions I make about resources here at Georgetown and new programs we’re developing. What can we bring to the community that is needed and isn’t already here? That’s where the doctor in me comes out.”

Community Involvement. Healthcare organizations must do their best to reflect the demographic profile of the community they serve in their hiring practices, all the way up to the top. Doing so ensures strong community relationships, more effective outreach and wellness programs and a pipeline of potential employees who see the organization as a partner in the community and an employer of choice.

In summary, diversity isn’t just about meeting onerous obligations. It is about making changes, in the spirit of inclusion that will have a positive impact on your organization. If your organization struggles with adding minority leaders to the executive level, talk to others in your network that have been successful with their diversity initiatives.

And when you speak to them, ask them how they found their people and what the return on their investment in diversity has been. No doubt, you will be in for a good education. If you have made significant inroads in adding diversity to your team, let others know about it and offer to help. Now is the time to add some real diversity to your organization’s leadership team!

Background On “30 Seconds To Mars” And Where To Catch The Next Tour

Background On “30 Seconds To Mars” And Where To Catch The Next Tour

30 Seconds to Mars was created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, and it really just started as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, however, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After a small revolving door of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Milicevic to finalize the band’s roster.

According to an interview from Virgin Records, the band’s name “actually comes from a thesis that [the band] found online [that] was written by a former Harvard professor. And one of the subsections of the thesis was titled ‘thirty seconds to mars’ and he goes on to talk about the expediential growth of technology that relates to humans and saying that we are quite literally thirty seconds to mars. What it means to us is, we thought it best described our music, in short.”

Although Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he originally preferred not to use this information to promote the band; in fact, the band used to refuse to play at venues that used his fame to promote shows.

30 Seconds to Mars’ first, self-titled album, produced by Bob Ezrin, was released in 2002 to mixed reviews and achieved sales of just over 100,000.

The band’s second album, A Beautiful Lie, was released on August 30, 2005. For this effort, the band traveled (during the course of three years) to four different continents, including five different countries, to perfect their sound and also to allow for Jared’s film career. The album was produced by Josh Abraham, whose producing credits also include Orgy, Velvet Revolver, and Linkin Park .

Because A Beautiful Lie was leaked five months before its release, the band decided to include two bonus tracks: “Battle of One” (an original song that was also set to be the album’s title track when it was first announced) and “Hunter” (a cover of the Björk song of the same name). To further promote the album, the band also enclosed “golden tickets” in 12 copies, which grant their owners access to any 30 Seconds to Mars concert free of charge, along with backstage access.

On August 31, 2006 the band won the MTV2 Award for “The Kill” at the MTV Video Music Awards, one of their two nominations. The second nomination was for best rock video; however, they lost to AFI’s “Miss Murder.” The music video is loosely based on the film The Shining. A Beautiful Lie was certified platinum by the RIAA in January for distribution of over 1,000,000 albums.

In October, the band began the “Welcome to the Universe” tour, sponsored by MTV2. 30 Seconds to Mars were supported on this tour by Head Automatica, The Receiving End of Sirens, Cobra Starship, and several other bands including The Street Drum Corps. On November 20, MTV2 premiered the video for “From Yesterday”; the video is the first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People’s Republic of China .

As of Spring 2007, the band is supporting The Used as a part of the Taste of Chaos tour and have scheduled a string of dates in Europe supporting Linkin Park .

30 Seconds to Mars are also scheduled to play Roskilde, Rock am Ring, Pinkpop, and Download festivals; on April 29 they will perform at the AVMAs for which they have been nominated for three, and will then begin working on their third album.

On March 1, 2007, bassist Matt Wachter announced his departure from the band live on stage during the band’s El Paso , Texas Taste of Chaos set. This was confirmed the following day with a statement on the band’s website.  He has since been replaced by Tim Kelleher (not the actor), who has been seen playing at the band’s concerts. It is unknown if this is a temporary or permanent change.

On May 2, 2007, the band has announced that “A Beautiful Lie” had won and would be the next single.

On July 21, 2007, it was announced that 30 Seconds To Mars had won second place in the Jabra Music Best Band in the World contest, based on votings around the world. 30 Seconds To Mars will be going on a concert tour soon. It is suggested that you buy your 30 Seconds To Mars concert tickets from a ticket broker to get great concert seats.

Overcoming Liver Disease

Category : Region III

Overcoming Liver Disease

Copyright (c) 2008 Katie Kelley

The liver remains an extremely important part of the body and one of the largest organs in the body. It not only provides the body with food in the form of nutrients and vitamins, it breaks down and gets rid of toxins.

According to the American Liver Foundation (ALF), nearly 1 in every 10 Americans suffers from some form of liver disease. Thousands of Americans may be living with liver disease and be unaware of it, according to ALF. According to this organization, several types of liver conditions can be prevented if caught early. The founders of ALF also claim that through education, preventative screenings and vaccinations, thousands will be spared this potentially deadly disease.

What is Liver Disease?

The Mayo Clinic, which is a nationally recognized not-for-profit facility dedicated to diagnosing and treating complex illnesses, have found that several variations of liver disease affecting millions of Americans exist.

Of the various types of liver disease, the most common types of liver diseases are known as hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcohol-induced liver disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which “describes a range of conditions involving the liver that affects people who drink little or no alcohol,” as defined by the Mayo Clinic.
Hepatitis is the most common form of liver disease. It occurs when the liver is inflamed and is linked to the spread of various viruses, but can also be developed because of poisons entering the body, an autoimmunity or hereditary condition.

Cirrhosis of the liver, also known as chronic liver disease, is a very serious and deadly form of liver disease. When fibrous tissues in the liver replace dead liver cells (often having died because of alcohol, chemical or hepatitis exposure, cirrhosis of the liver may occur. Scarring of the liver, especially severe scarring, is often caused by cirrhosis of the liver.

Alcohol-induced liver disease is caused through excessive consumption of alcohol primarily from individuals with disorders known as alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse. According to researchers at ALF, alcohol abuse is a leading cause of morbidity and morality around the world. In the United States, nearly 10 percent of men and 3 percent of women suffer from problems related to alcohol consumption, including liver disease.

NAFLD is also known as “fatty liver” disease and it can be caused by several issues such as obesity, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and elevated triglyceride levels. NAFLD can often be difficult to diagnose in beginning stages, but can rapidly worsen. The Mayo Clinic reports that cases of NAFLD can and have progressed to stages of severe cirrhosis or liver cancer.

There are an array of signs that are common among nearly all types of liver disease, according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Medical Center. These symptoms include:

* depression

* jaundice or yellowing of the skin

* loss of appetite, nausea

* unusual weight loss or weight gain

* darkened urine

* vomiting

* diarrhea, light-colored stools

* abdominal pain in upper right part of stomach

* vague feelings of illness

* varicose veins

* hypoglycemia

* loss of sex drive

* fatigue

* low grade fever

* generalized itching

* muscle aches and pains

* susceptibility to bleeding

* enlarged and tender liver

* enlarged spleen

* edema or under-the-skin swelling

* aplastic anemia

* ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen

* encephalopathy

* changes in mental state or level of consciousness

If an individual shows any of these signs or symptoms, it is necessary for them to seek medical assistance immediately.

Developing Liver Disease

There are several possible risk factors for developing liver disease, although it is difficult to determine some cases and many researchers believe it is unclear as to what the determines NAFLD. According to the UIC Medical Center, the following are several potential causes of liver disease:

* congenital birth defects or abnormalities at birth

* metabolic disorders or basic body processes with defects

* viral or bacterial infections

* nutritional deficiencies

* trauma or injury

* alcohol or poisoning by toxins can attribute to alcoholic-related
liver disease

Additionally, the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) warned of another potential risk for individuals developing liver disease. The FDA detailed a strong link of liver failure with the Ketek (telithromycin) antibiotic manufactured by Saofi Aventis. Ketek is used to treat bacterial infections of the lung such as:

* mild- to moderate-pneumonia

* acute worsening of chronic bronchitis

* acute bacterial sinusitis

The increased warnings were based on findings by the FDA’s reviews of the drug’s postmarketing adverse events reports. The reports found that:

* Within the review, there were 12 cases of acute liver failure among Ketek patients.

* Four of these 12 resulted in death while a fifth individuals required a liver transplant in order to survive.

* Additionally, 23 cases of acute liver disease also were reported.

* In some patients, liver disease began developing after only a few doses of Ketek.

The increased risk of liver disease as related to consumption of Ketek caused the FDA to increase the warning label on the prescription drug, although patients of Ketek should cease taking the medication if they feel the signs or symptoms of liver disease.

Liver Disease Treatments

Treating the various forms of liver disease will vary based on a specific type and case, however, the following are often administered during treatment, according to the UIC Medical Center.

* bed rest

* avoiding alcohol

* consuming a well-balanced diet that has been pre-approved for
liver disease

* avoiding dehydration by consuming plenty of fluids, especially water

* avoiding unnecessary medications

* taking an anti-nausea medication as well as other specifically prescribed medications depending on the type of liver condition

If individuals have an advanced case of liver disease it may be necessary to for that patient to undergo a surgical procedure or liver transplant. Unfortunately, there are treatments that exist in which a patient must have a pint of blood removed once or twice a week for the duration of several months.

Children who are affected by liver disease may even require a surgery known as the Kasai surgery in which a patient will have part of their bile ducts replaced by parts of the intestine.

Any form of liver disease will likely be a time-consuming life-altering condition and often will be very costly in receiving medical assistance. Discussing your case with a knowledgeable pharmaceutical lawyer can help determine if there is any potential for developing Ketek litigation.

Child & Adolescent Mental Health: the Right Career at the Right Time

Category : Region III

Child & Adolescent Mental Health: the Right Career at the Right Time

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an estimated two-thirds of the young people who need mental health services aren’t getting them. The time is now for a career in child and adolescent mental health.

Mental Health Career Profile
Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, discover private, and very often hidden, information, and then use that information to potentially save someone’s life. If you believe a meaningful career is about more than just a paycheck, mental health could your profession. With a growing population and the identification of new disorders, the field is ripe for growth and discovery.

Child and adolescent mental health services typically focus on a variety of mental, emotional, and substance abuse issues kids experience daily. This may mean working with patients as individuals or in group settings in order to find answers to developmental difficulties. Working environments may include hospitals, clinics, schools, as well as mental health facilities.

A Career at the Competitive Edge
Why mental services? In a word, diversity. One of the primary benefits of a career in this profession is that you’re typically not restricted to a predictable track. There are multi-level tiers that cater to a variety of interests and education levels. Many of the niches overlap, which can allow you to explore your preferences. A few of your options include:

• psychiatry occupational therapy
• clinical psychology
• psychiatric nursing
• social services
• psychotherapy
• language development

Flexibility is another key benefit. A surprising percentage of mental health professionals are self-employed, working within their own established practice or as a freelance consultant. Because mental health is such an in-demand profession, graduates may find that they can create their own schedules, deciding when and how much to work based on their own professional and personal obligations.

Mental Health in the Numbers
When most people think of mental health, the psychologist usually comes immediately to mind. And it can be a good place to start when looking at the growth potential in the field of child and adolescent mental health. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that psychologists alone held 166,000 positions in 2006. And employment of psychologists projected to increase by 15 percent through 2016–that’s faster than the national average. Also, psychologists working in elementary and secondary schools enjoyed one of the higher annual mean salary levels at ,040.

To Follow This Career Path
While all professionals in the mental health field typically possess a bachelor’s degree in a pertinent subject, students wishing to be competitive for the top jobs should pursue a specialist’s or doctoral degree in psychiatry, psychology, or counseling. For example, if you have your sights set on serving in an educational setting, a specialist (EdS) degree in school psychology traditionally requires 3 years of full-time graduate study plus a 1-year full-time internship.

The requirements for potential psychologists are usually more stringent. Geri Fox, Director of Psychiatry Undergraduate Medical Education with the University of Illinois at Chicago, encourages board certification by completing two years of child and adolescent psychiatry training in addition to earning board certification in general psychiatry.

Kelli Smith is the senior editor for www.Edu411.org. Edu411.org lists colleges and career institutes that offer training and programs in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Schools listed offer free information packages or academic consultation.

Green Tea: The Natural Way to Stay Slim

Category : Region III

Green Tea: The Natural Way to Stay Slim

For centuries, Chinese doctors and healers have known about the healing properties and slimming ability of green tea. Today, modern science and lengthy studies have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that green tea is one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. Healthier, in fact, than pure water!

What? Green tea is healthier than water? Surely that has to be a joke. But it’s not. Dr. Carrie Ruxton, from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, says “Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so it’s got two things going for it.”

Health problems such as heart disease, cellular degeneration, diabetes, cancer, aging, and a plethora of other maladies are caused by nasty little toxins called “free radicals”. Free radical damage is caused by everyday exposure to various environmental factors and is basically unavoidable. That’s where the antioxidants found in green tea come in. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and protect the body from damage.

What does that mean for you? Let’s take a quick look at some of the more exciting health benefits that come from drinking green tea…

Green Tea Fights Cancer & Disease

As mentioned earlier, green tea is jam-packed with antioxidants. Some especially potent ones called “catechins” and “polyphenols” are extra capable of terminating free radicals and protecting against heart disease, strokes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many forms of cancer.

Green Tea Promotes Healthy, Beautiful Skin

The same antioxidants in green tea that fight cancer and disease also promote healthy, beautiful skin by terminating free radicals that attack skin cells. Free radical damage causes skin spots and wrinkles, but the antioxidants in green tea help keep the damage to a minimum.

Green Tea Boosts the Immune System

A 2003 study compared tea drinkers to coffee and found that the production of anti-bacterial proteins was five times higher in tea drinkers, which indicates a much stronger immune system. Two years later, another study found that the catechin antioxidants greatly inhibited the influenza virus…also known as the common flu.

Green Tea Fights Bad Breath & Promotes Healthy Teeth

Researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago found that polyphenol antioxidants in green tea work as an anti-bacterial and inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause bad breath. These antibacterial properties also help the teeth and gums.

Green Tea Boosts the Metabolism & Burns Fat

One of the most well known benefits of green tea is, quite possibly, its ability to boost the metabolism and lose the pounds. In fact, you’ll find green tea extract in almost every diet pill and fat burning supplement on the market, and for good reason.

The powerful antioxidants in green tea are at it again. This time stimulating the nervous system, boosting the metabolism, and causing fat to be released into the body to be used as fuel. This not only burns fat, but also provides a boost of energy at the same time.

The many benefits of green tea are simply mind boggling. If you’re even halfway concerned about having a fit body, you’d be crazy not to replace every nutritionally harmful soft drink, fattening latté, and sugar-packed fruit juice with this healthy beverage.

Christopher is a tea expert and contributing writer for both http://www.OolongWuYiTea.com and http://www.GreenWeightLossTea.com where you can learn all about the amazing health benefits of Wu Yi tea & Oolong tea and also about green tea & weight loss.

Dr. Nelson Mane Talks About Two Common Medications That May be Causing Your Peripheral Neuropathy

Category : Region III

Dr. Nelson Mane Talks About Two Common Medications That May be Causing Your Peripheral Neuropathy

Many patients diagnosed with idiopathic (we don’t know why) peripheral neuropathy may have neuropathy induced by medication and are unaware of it. The most common cause of neuropathy in the U.S is diabetes. The most common cause in the world is Leprosy. Other common causes in the U.S include things such as alcoholism, B vitamin deficiency, HIV medication, kidney disease and chemotherapy. High cholesterol is seen in the U.S and is most times treated with statin drugs. A thorough investigation into causes of neuropathy should include statin medications especially when more common causes can not be established. Here is some scientific literature from 2004.

  pharmacotherapy, 2004 Sep;24(9):1194-203.

  Statin-associated peripheral neuropathy: review of the literature.

  ChongPH, Boskovich A, Stevkovic N. Bartt RE.

 Department of Pharmacy, John H. Stroger, Jr Hospital, School of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago, IL 60612-3715, USA.

 Various pharmacologic agents are available for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, including 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors, commonly referred to as statins, which offer favorable lipid-lowering effects and reductions in morbidity and mortality. Statins are usually better tolerated than other lipid-lowering agents and therefore have become a mainstay of treatment for hypercholesterolemia. However, recent case reports of peripheral neuropathy in patients treated with statins may have gone unnoticed by health care professionals. To evaluate the possible link between statins and peripheral neuropathy, literature searches using MEDLINE (January 1993–November 2003) and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (January 1970–June 2002) were performed. Key search terms were statin, neuropathy, and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Based on epidemiologic studies as well as case reports, a risk of peripheral neuropathy associated with statin use may exist; however, the risk appears to be minimal. On the other hand, the benefits of statins are firmly established. These findings should alert prescribers to a potential risk of peripheral neuropathy in patients receiving any of the statins; that is, statins should be considered the cause of peripheral neuropathy when other etiologies have been excluded.

 PMID: 15460180 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

 Another commonly prescribed antibiotic is the Flouroquinolones (ie Cipro). Again, if more common causes of neuropathy can not be ruled in at least a temporal history of Flouroquinolones should be involved in the search for the cause of your neuropathy.

  Dr. Nelson Mañé is a board certified chiropractic orthopedist and neurologist in Tampa who is one of the leading doctors in the use of HPLT for peripheral neuropathy. The treatment can be used even if standard treatments with Neurontin, Lyrica, Cymbalta and Anodyne have failed. His office has performed over 5000 HPLT treatments for neuropathy patients.

Autodesk – Autodesk Software – How Autodesk Began

Category : Region III

Autodesk – Autodesk Software – How Autodesk Began

Autodesk is the creator of various software products that focus on 2D and 3D design for use in architecture, engineering, building construction and manufacturing. It also has designed media and entertainment solutions for digital media creation, management, and delivery across all kinds of areas from film and television visual effects, color grading, and editing to animation, game development, and design visualization.

Autodesk’s Media and Entertainment Division is based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was established in 1999 after Autodesk, Inc. acquired Discreet Logic, Inc. and merged its operations with Kinetix which division is now the leader in PC-based 3D modeling and animation software, providing a full range of products for digital media and design professionals.

Autodesk is the fourth largest PC software company in the world and has over 3 million customers in over 150 countries. Autodesk products are sold through Autodesk Systems Centers, Dealers and Distributors worldwide.

In January 2006, Autodesk acquired Alias, a developer of 3D graphics technology. In October 2008, Autodesk acquired the Softimage brand from Avid.

The principal product offerings from the Media and Entertainment Division of Autodesk are Maya, Softimage, 3ds Max, Inferno, Flame, Discreet Flint, Discreet Smoke, Lustre, ImageModeler and Stitcher. These products have all won Academy Awards.

Autodesk has become best known for it’s computer-aided design software “AutoCAD.” In addition to AutoCAD, Autodesk develops Digital Prototyping solutions to visualize, simulate, and analyze real-world performance using a digital model during the design process.

AutoCAD was derived from a program called Interact, which was written in a proprietary language (SPL) and ran on the Marinchip Systems 9900 computer (Marinchip was owned by Autodesk co-founders John Walker and Dan Drake.)

When Marinchip Software Partners (later to be renamed Autodesk) was formed, they decided to re-code Interact in C and PL/1 — C, because it seemed to be the biggest upcoming language, and PL/1. In the end, the PL/1 version was unsuccessful. The C version was, at the time, one of the most complex programs in that language to date. Autodesk even had to work with the compiler developer (Lattice) to fix certain limitations to get AutoCAD to run, and now, as one of the most expensive softwares on the market, AutoCAD is the most widely used for computer-aided design and is even taught in Universities.

Rondle is the creator of several popular websites including http://www.cheap-new-software.com where you can find the best prices for new and authentic software at very low prices, including cheap autodesk software.

Movie and Television Hiring Michigan Men and Women for Technical and Production Jobs

The Urban Film Institute will be conducting classes at two Detroit College campus locations:  Eastern Michigan University Campus (Detroit Campus),   18100 Meyers Rd., Detroit, MI 48235; and, Marygrove College, 8425 McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221.

Marygrove College Pre-Registration and Casting Call

The BBC Urban Film Institute will initiate pre-registration for classes at Marygrove College in Detroit.  The pre-registration will be accompanied with a Casting Call for 3 Movies, and 2 Television Productions.

The classwork is presented by industry professional and native Detroiter, Philip (Kojo) Vaden.  “The purpose of this class is to train students in production assisting so that they can obtain entry-level jobs in the growing film industry here in Michigan,” explained Vaden. The eight-week course offers a wide variety of creative and technology-based programming.

 Casting Call for 3 Movies, and 2 Television Productions

“We’re kicking off with a casting call for three movies and three television shows,” says co-founder, Weldon Hullett. “We’re looking for talent in all fields: singers, dancers, writers, seamstresses, and cooks. Whatever your passion is come and get involved. Our staff members will help you develop your skills to film and television standards.”

 Course Description

The BBC Urban Film Institute provides instruction on story development, digital camera operation, video editing, lighting, sound recording, and production management. By the end of the course students will have produced one documentary film. Equipment and study materials are provided.

 Digital technology plays an increasingly influential role in the world and the BBC Urban Film Institute believes young people must be media literate if they are to achieve success in today’s competitive global marketplace. The BBC Urban Film Institute seeks to narrow the digital divide in lower income communities by increasing access to the art and technology of film making.

 On the Job Professional Training

The eight week course begins Saturday, September 19 and will teach production assistant terminology and etiquette and prepare students to work in the film and television industry. “The difference between this program and others is that our students will be working on actual programs with professionals in the industry,” said co-founder and CEO, Phillip (Kojo) Vaden.

10 Second Health Tips

Category : Region III

10 Second Health Tips

1. Tea off in the morning. Hot tea can slash your risk of kidney cancer by 15 percent, according to a review in the International Journal of Cancer. Replace your battery acid with a cup of rooibos first thing in the morning.

2. Sleep smarter. Too much sleep, or not enough of it, can kill you. A British study found that getting more than nine hours of sack time a night, or less than six, doubles your risk of an early death from any cause. Aim for seven to eight hours a night.

3. Pop in your lenses post-shower. Soaping up while wearing your contacts can expose your eyes to infection-causing waterborne microbes, say University of Illinois at Chicago researchers.

4. Drink wine, stay lean. Polyphenols, the compounds found in red wine, help your body block fat absorption, an Israeli study found. Red-wine marinades work, too.

5. Lose the lint. Taking two seconds to empty the lint trap in your clothes dryer can prevent you from being a dryer-fire victim. No jokes, it happens to 315 people in the US each year.

6. Check your neck. An American Journal of Medicine study found that a mildly under-active thyroid can boost your heart-disease risk by 65 percent. A quick blood test can assess your level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

7. Stretch it out. Genes in your body linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity can be ‘turned on’ if you sit for hours on end, reports a study in Diabetes. Hit the ‘off’ button by taking hourly laps during TV, book and Web sessions.

8. Steam your broccoli. Italian researchers recently discovered that steaming broccoli increases its concentration of glucosi-nolates (compounds found to fight cancer) by 30 percent. Boiling actually lowers the levels.

9. Skip the spray. Using household spray cleaners just once a week increases your risk of an asthma attack by 76 percent, say Spanish researchers. Use wipes instead.

10. Boost your defenses. An Archives of Internal Medicine review reports that 400IU of vitamin D a day reduces your risk of an early death by seven percent.

11. Scent your air safely. Some air fresheners contain phthalates, compounds that may disrupt hormone processes, Natural Resources Defense Council testing reveals. Check the labels carefully.

12. Lean back. Parking your torso at a 90-degree angle strains your spine, say Scottish and Canadian researchers. Instead, recline the seat back slightly. The ideal angle is 45 degrees off vertical.
