Houston Rockets – The Early Years

Category : Region IV

Houston Rockets – The Early Years

The Rockets, along with the Seattle SuperSonics, entered the NBA in 1967 as an expansion team based in San Diego. They selected Pat Riley with their first draft pick in 1967. They went on to produce a then-NBA record 67-loss season.

In 1968 the Rockets won the coin toss versus the Baltimore Bullets, giving them the first overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft. They selected Elvin “the Big E” Hayes from the University of Houston. Hayes led the team to the franchise’s first ever playoff appearance in 1969. The Rockets lost in the Western divisional semi-final to the Atlanta Hawks two games to four in a best-of-seven series.

The 1970 NBA Draft brought Calvin Murphy and Rudy Tomjanovich to the Rockets – both significant to the franchise after their playing careers were over.

Coached by Jack McMahon and Alex Hannum, the Rockets tallied a 119-209 record over their tenure in San Diego.

In 1971, real estate broker Wayne Duddleston and banker Billy Goldberg bought the franchise for .6 million and relocated the team from San Diego, where fans were more disposed to the Los Angeles Lakers than the Rockets. The Rockets originally had been named for San Diego slogan, “A City in Motion,” but with the move to Houston their name took on even greater relevance. Houston is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and Mission Control, which received national attention during Project Apollo.

The Rockets began playing at various venues in Houston, including the Astrodome, AstroHall, and Hofheinz Pavilion. They also played games at HemisFair Arena in San Antonio and in Waco. However, fan support was weak in the football and baseball-dominated city, and the Rockets averaged less than 5000 fans per game during their first Houston season. It was mused that the local churches in Waco drew more attendance than the Rockets.

Before the start of the 1971 season, Coach Alex Hannum left for the Denver Nuggets of the American Basketball Association. Tex Winter was hired as the new coach shortly before the team was sold. Coach Winter applied a triple-post offensive system that contrasted with the offensive style to which Hayes was accustomed. Houston soon traded Hayes to the Baltimore Bullets for Jack Marin. Lack of success did little to capture the city’s attention, and in the Spring of 1973, following the Rockets 10th straight loss, Winter was relieved of his duties.

In 1975, with Coach Johnny Egan’s guidance and Tomjanovich, Murphy, and Mike Newlin leading the way, the Rockets made their first appearance in the playoffs since arriving in Houston. The Rockets defeated the New York Knicks (led by Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe) in the first round, but lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.

At the start of the 1977 season, the Rockets negotiated a trade with the Buffalo Braves to acquire Moses Malone, who as a high school star made the unprecedented decision of bypassing college basketball to sign on as a professional with the Utah Stars of the ABA in 1974. The Rockets defeated the Washington Bullets in the 1977 Eastern Conference semi-final, but lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the Conference Finals. Malone made an impressive showing against Washington’s Elvin Hayes and waning star Wes Unseld.

On December 9, 1977, in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Kevin Kunnert got into a fight with the Lakers’ Kermit Washington. As Tomjanovich approached the altercation, Washington turned and threw a punch, landing squarely in the face of an approaching Tomjanovich, causing extensive structural damage to his cranium. The shocking scene became the defining moment of the Rockets’ 1977-78 season as well as the playing careers of Tomjanovich and Washington. Tomjanovich spent the next five months in rehabilitation and returned to appear in the 1978 All-Star Game. A book by John Feinstein recording the events surrounding this event and the different paths that Tomjanovich and Washington have taken since that day is entitled “The Punch.”

Malone received the 1979 MVP Award. Not exceptionally big or quick, he used footwork and positioning to become a successful center in the NBA. Malone, Murphy, and Tomjanovich all played in the 1979 NBA All-Star Game. Rick Barry was signed for the 1979 season from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for John Lucas. Barry averaged a modest 13.5 points and set a new NBA record, posting a .947 free-throw percentage for the season. He would play one more year for the Rockets before retiring in 1980.

The Rockets went 47-35 in 1978-79, Nissalke’s last season as coach. They finished second in the Central Division, losing two straight to Atlanta in a best-of-three first-round series.

Lsu Tigers Men’s Basketball Tickets And Seating Chart

Category : Region IV

Lsu Tigers Men’s Basketball Tickets And Seating Chart

It’s been a great new experience for the men’s basketball team at LSU. Although the entire facility will not be complete until sometime in 2010, the LSU Tigers were excited to practice in their own brand new facility recently. When the construction is complete, there will be a new media room, new team dressing room, equipment facilities, training facilities and two practice gyms; the latter of which has already been finished and made available to the players recently. Although the LSU Tigers were not the first to use the new facilities (the women’s basketball team used them the previous weekend), they made good use of the 11,324 square foot gym which is an exact replica of the Maravich Center competition court.

Fans, coaches, staff and team members are optimistic that the new gyms will allow the team to create more focus and concentration on their game skills and build a longer repertoire of wins. Thus far, the LSU Tigers have won games against UL-Monroe, Indiana State, Western Kentucky and UL-Lafayette. Perhaps there’s no connection whatsoever, but all of the winning games have been played at the Maravich Center. By contrast, the two away games in the season tip-off against Connecticut and Arizona State were losses for the LSU Tigers. Connecticut beat the Tigers 81-55 and Arizona State dusted the LSU Tigers 71-52.

With plenty of games ahead in the 2009-2010 season and quite a few of the games scheduled at home, there are plenty of opportunities for the LSU Tigers to make this their best season ever. Once finals are complete, the LSU Tigers will return to the court for December games against Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls and Rice. The start of the Cougar Hardwood Classic marks the rest of the games in December for the LSU Tigers with games against Washington State and Xavier (Ohio).

Recognized officially as the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it takes its name from Peter Press Maravich (23), all-century team member whose list of accomplishments for the LSU Tigers stretches a mile long but whose life ended suddenly in 1988. Affectionately referred to by most as simply Maravich Center, this two-level facility has been the home to many great games played by the LSU Tigers men’s basketball team.

The upper level has sections 304 through 337 designated as the student section. Sections 202, 203, 102, 103 and part of 104 are also set aside for students. So, when making your seating selections, be sure to keep this in mind. Ample seating throughout the rest of the entire venue offer excellent sites from every seat. Maravich Center is a spacious venue that takes every seat to the game for an experience watching the LSU Tigers heat up the court. If you haven’t take advantage of the opportunity to experience the LSU Tigers in motion, you owe it to yourself to get tickets to some of these great games held at Maravich Center.

As the LSU Tigers move into the season, there are 13 games scheduled at the Maravich Center and whether you want to attend all of these games or just a chosen one or two, there’s no question that great seats are still available to see the LSU Tigers take on opponents like Utah, Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Georgia and McNeese State.

Now is the perfect time to score group seating in your ideal location and ensure that you don’t miss one single moment of the action as the LSU Tigers prepare to hit the new gym in practice and hone their skills for the upcoming games.

Amc, University of Colorado Cancer Centers Merge

Category : Region IV

Amc, University of Colorado Cancer Centers Merge

The AMC, a nonprofit research institute located in Lakewood, Colo., will continue as an independent foundation devoted to financial support for research in cancer causation, prevention and control at the University of Colorado.

The merger also is designed to help increase philanthropic community support for cancer research, according to Dr. Al Marcus, interim scientific director at AMC.

“Combining efforts with the university makes both organizations stronger,” says Marcus. “Not only will this enhance our ability to share research approaches and resources, but it will increase grant funding and fundraising opportunities as well. The relocation will facilitate collaborations and provide access to the state-of-the-art facilities.”

AMC was originally founded as the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society in 1904, a charitable hospital and research center that treated patients with tuberculosis. In the 1950s, when that disease was brought under control, the society changed its name to the American Medical Center and directed its sizable resources to the treatment and research of cancer.

Until 1989, AMC was a hospital as well as a research center, but then began focusing entirely on research and ways to control cancer, to help patients live longer and to prevent cancer before it starts.

Applications to American Universities

Category : Region IV

Applications to American Universities

For the most part, applying to an American university is the same for international students as it is for students within the country. However, there are some special considerations that need to be made when applying.

Regardless of what country you are from, you will need to complete the minimum requirements for test scores and high school (or the equal to it in your country) grade point averages for that specific university. You can find out what the minimums for each university are on the university’s website, or by contacting a university representative. You will need to complete the SAT and ACT test for most any university, though some only require one test or the other to be taken. Because these tests cost money, it’s always best to figure out which scores you need, so you can exclude any unnecessary testing.

However, while these are generally the only tests that need to be taken for applicants native to America, international students will sometimes have to complete additional tests to be considered for admittance. The most common test is the Test of English as an International Language or TOFL. This test checks that you are fluent enough in English to both comprehend your courses and lectures and, readily interact with professors and other mentors on the university campus.

After being admitted to the university of your choice, you will need to obtain a visa – this ensures that you will, indeed, be able to travel to America without governmental or immigration complications stopping you. If you are a temporary student participating in an exchange program, then you will need a J-1 visa – which will allow you to stay in the country, but only for a stated amount of time. For those staying for the full duration of their degree plan, a F-1 visa will be needed. This visa allows a much longer stay, but requires much more paperwork, meaning that you should, by all means, apply early.

Finally, you must submit evidence of your financial ability to cover the educational costs of at least two semesters. That means the, Certificate of Financial Resources and an official or certified copy of bank statement are required before the I-20 is issued. Make sure to have a way to bring or send the money to the university. It is also good to contact the university ahead of time to learn about their tuition and fees payment options. This will ensure there are no complications in the payment being fulfilled and will keep you from being charged a late fee.
