Self Published Book Bares Shocking Truth about Bulimia Nervosa from a Different Perspective

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that continues to affect many people around the world, more particularly women. This psychological condition, which constitutes binge eating and forcibly purging what has been eaten, ensues emotional distress – depression, guilt and self-condemnation, which are then followed by physical problems such as dehydration, malnutrition and organ failure.

What is interesting to note is that bulimia can also cause teeth erosion, a result from the stomach acids that are used in purging. In fact, about 26% of all bulimia cases is first diagnosed by a dentist.

This was what author and Doctor Brian McKay learned following the frequency of his patients showing symptoms of bulimia through dental visits. As a result, McKay self-published his findings in the book, Bulimia is a Dental Disease.

McKay’s 25-year experience in dental practice has lent so much to his self-published book, which is the first of its kind and has become a landmark book that deals with diagnosis, treatment and recovery of bulimia in a uniquely different perspective.

Through this book, one can discover interesting facts, so that one may be able to spot the early signs of bulimia and treat this condition in a pragmatic yet highly revolutionary approach.

Bulimia is a Dental Disease is published by Xlibris.

About the Author
Dr. Brian McKay graduated from the University Of Southern California School Of Dentistry. Not content with having one of the biggest and most successful dental practices in Northwest California, he came up with a new concept in dentistry, that of a personalized, cosmetic dental practice.

From that concept, he encountered patients with eating disorders, many of which showed symptoms of bulimia. After consulting with eating disorder specialists and treatment practitioners in the Northwest and Southwest California, he then developed his own unique approach to treating patients with eating disorders.

Dr. McKay also received recognition as founding faculty member, lecturer and leader of the Pacific Aesthetic Continuum, a premier post-graduate school for cosmetic dentistry at the University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco.

About Xlibris
Xlibris was founded in 1997 and, as the leading publishing services provider for authors, has helped to publish more than 20,000 titles. Xlibris is based in Bloomington, IN and provides authors with direct and personal access to quality publication in hardcover, trade paperback, custom leather-bound, and full-color formats.

Investigations and prosecutions of export violations are on the rise and penalties have increased by almost 2,500% since 2006 – with fines often in the millions of dollars and imprisonment in criminal cases. Manufacturers and exporters of defense articles take on a significant responsibility when it comes to compliance with the International Traffic In Arms Regulations (ITAR). As part of their mission to help promote U.S. exports, the U.S. Commercial Service, in cooperation with the Florida District Export Council and UPS, presents “Understanding the ITAR – ITAR Bootcamp” featuring consulting firm Compliance Assurance LLC and the law firms of Dilworth Paxson LLP and Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A. These ITAR experts will provide critical information to individuals engaging in export activities and keep them from getting in trouble with federal authorities.

A full-day “Understanding the ITAR” seminar will be held at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida on Thursday, April 22, 2010. This ITAR seminar is part of the Florida District Export Council’s ongoing “Export University” education series. Seminar participants may register by contacting Stephanie Heckel at the Ft. Lauderdale U.S. Export Assistance Center (954-356-6640, ext. 19; Stephanie.Heckel@trade.gov).

Consider the fact that a Port St. Lucie, FL man was convicted last year for the illegal sales of military-grade electronic amplifiers to China and sentenced to 60 months in prison. Jim Anzalone, President of Compliance Assurance LLC, believes that “now is the time for companies to promote export compliance training. President Obama’s goal of doubling exports in the next five years means more companies will be pursuing lucrative export markets and no one can afford the potential risks that come with the territory”.

It is important for all exporters to be aware that not only “things that go boom” are controlled under the ITAR. Potentially any item designed for military application may be included on the United States Munitions List (USML). This could include aircraft parts used on civilian aircraft that were originally designed for military aircraft or electronic components, like those in the Port St. Lucie case, that were designed for military applications.

It is no secret that export enforcement and penalties have increased significantly in recent years. However, that is not the main reason that most people work hard to ensure their compliance with U.S. laws and regulations. Says Jim Anzalone, “our laws exist to ensure national security and advance foreign policy objectives and it is our collective desire to protect the U.S., its allies, and to do the right thing”.

Compliance Assurance LLC is a private consultancy firm specializing in global trade compliance solutions. The firm’s primary mission is to assure companies’ compliance with the federal regulations governing import and export trade activities. For more information on the ITAR and U.S. export and import laws and regulations, contact Jim Anzalone at (561) 641-5036 or via email at Jim@WeAreCompliant.com

Barbara Ann Thompson and William Allan Kritsonis – Article: Making National, State, District, and Local Plans Work Through Strategic Planning

Barbara Ann Thompson and William Allan Kritsonis, PhD

Introduction

The role of the school administrative team is most often associated with educational leadership. Leadership roles can be enacted by all stakeholders within the school community, including the student population (Levin, 1998; Wallin, 2003). The six realms of meaning (Kritsonis, 2007) cover the range of possible meanings and comprise the basic competencies that general education should develop in every person. A philosophical theory of the curriculum for general education based on the idea of logical patterns in disciplined understanding is presented in Ways of Knowing Through the Realms of Meaning (Kritsonis, 2007). There are patterns or structures in knowledge and an understanding of these typical forms is essential for the guidance of teaching, learning, and constructing the curriculum. The various patterns of knowledge are varieties of meaning, and the learning of these patterns is the clue to the effective realization of essential humanness through the curriculum of general education (Kritsonis, 2007).

Purpose of the Article

The purpose of this article is to discuss significant aspects of the six realms of meaning as it relates to strategic planning in educational leadership.

Planning Initiatives

The six realms of meaning are viewed as six fundamental patterns of meaning (Kritsonis, 2007). These patterns are sequential and provide the foundation for all meanings that enter the human experience and emerge from an analysis of possible distinctive modes of human understanding. The patterns are symbolics, empirics, esthetics, synnoetics, ethics, and synoptics (Kritsonis, 2007).

The entire school or organization’s future is at stake in strategic planning (Center for Organizational Development and Leadership, 2007). Strategic planning in educational leadership determines where a school is going over the next year or more and how it’s going to get there (McNamara, 2008). A postmodern approach for academic and administrative departments would be to implement plans and strategies that are narrowly focused and vital to their future. A plan too broad would allow for planning initiatives to go amiss from the correct course of focus or persons could get stuck and not be able to move forward (Center for School or Organizational Development and Leadership, 2007). A framework for strategic planning of higher education centered on leadership, communication, and assessment is predictive of making national, state, district and local plans work (Center for School or Organizational Development and Leadership, 2007). Steps in the framework according to McNamara (2008) would include the following:

Mission, vision and value statements,

collaborators and beneficiaries, environmental review, goals, strategies and action plans, plan creation, and

outcomes and achievements.

    2. The modernist divorces the knower (English, 2003).

In the fourth realm of synnoetics, the student could gain personal insight through working with skilled guidance counselors or thorough a social activity. The student is endowed with a rich and disciplined life in relation to self and others. Synnoetics requires active participation and engagement. To know and to be are one and the same in personal existence. Ethics or moral knowledge is the fifth realm where a student is able to make wise decisions and to judge between right and wrong. His moral conduct is a universal responsibility. It is what ought to be done and it is right action. In the sixth realm of synoptics, the student would possess an integral outlook of which epistemology – the theory of knowledge, and metaphysics – what is real, are the primary basis for its function (Kritsonis, 2007).

The First Realm: Symbolics

Systems of mathematics are designed to achieve complete precision in meaning and rigor in reasoning (Kritsonis, 2007). Discursive language refers to language used in customary speech for communicating ideas.

The scope of curriculum in general education allows each person’s participation in the meaning of the social whole of the educational community (Kritsonis, 2007). Integrity and the need to be learned in certain essentials would allow for leadership that defines roles and responsibilities essential to the effectiveness of the strategic plan. Board members, community leaders, teachers, parents and students actively participate in creating and organizing guiding principles for continuous effective leadership, communication, and assessment.

Communication skills will be displayed through speaking, writing, and class experience. This broader-based ownership in which participants feel valued and involved makes it easier to commit to change (Lindsey, Robins and Terrell, 2003).

Lindsey, Robins and Terrell stated in their book, Cultural Proficiency, A Handbook for School Professionals, that what is required in a strategic plan is informed and dedicated staff that are committed and involved in leadership. They take time to think, reflect, assess, decide, and change, and actively participate in work sessions where the educational community is contributing distinctive ideas, beliefs, feelings, and perceptions (2003). To monitor a plan’s progress and assess it outcomes, ongoing attention to assessment is necessary. These appraisals for assessment provide guidance for developing pre-planning strategies. They allow for monitoring the planning process and judging whether a plan’s activities and strategies are successful in fulfilling the school or organization’s goals. Strategic planning, according to Center for School or Organizational Development and Leadership (2007), can include conducting a review of the school or organization’s political, social, economic and technical environment. In an initial review, an analysis of the school or organization can be completed. The planning phase can look at factors that are driving forces in the environment, strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats regarding the school or organization. The mission, vision and value statements are updated as needed. The Center for School or Organizational Development and Leadership (2007) suggests that an environment that has a diverse leadership team fostering readiness and receptivity and has an understanding of decision making processes and boundaries would aid creating successful plans for schools and organizations. Sizing up previous plan’s successes on current efforts helps to keep a historical perspective on efforts of change.

Mission statements are brief written descriptions of the purpose of the school (McNamara, 2008). The mission statement is a specific purpose statement that is part of the overall mission statement. The value and vision statements are part of the mission statement. Vision statements are usually a compelling description of how the school or organization will or should operate at some point in the future and of how. The basic strategic planning process according to McNamara (2006) would include the following steps: (1) Identify the purpose of the school or organization, which is also called the mission statement. The statement should describe what student or employee needs are intended to be met and with what services. The mission statement can change through the years as the school or organization changes to society’s needs. (2) Select goals that must be reached in order to accomplish the mission. These goals would address major issues facing the school or organization. (3) Identify the specific approaches or strategies to implement to reach the goals. In this step, the external and internal environments of the school or organization are examined closely. Steps to strengthen financial management can also be addressed. (4) Identify specific action plans or functions of each department to on how each strategy would be implemented. At this stage committees can be organized to monitor if objectives are met. (5) Monitoring and updating the plan is the final step in this plan. Reflection by planners is conducted to see to what extent the goals and objectives are being met and if the action plans are being implemented. At this stage feedback is important. A school or organization may generate a survey addressing school or organization satisfaction (McNamara, 2006).

The Second Realm: Empirics

The empirics realms deals with facutal and measureable components.

The Third Realm: Esthetics

Among the four disciplines in the third realm of esthetics to be studied by the student are music, art, literature and the arts of movement in physical education.

The beautification process can be applied to organizations as well.

The Fourth Realm: Synnoetics

The knower and the known are inseparable (English, 2003).

Team building, decision making, goal setting, conflict resolution and diversity awareness reveal relationships to other people and should be addressed in a strategic plan. Identifying critical stakeholders, skill of members, pros and cons of making a choice and having a process to deal with different opinions are key skill sets. Clarifying issues, seeing the other person’s perspective, identifying common ground, identifying what can be changed and what cannot be changed are essential in plan creating and school or organization. Highly controlled social mechanisms give way to threatening intimate personal relations and being true to self. A growing need and emphasis is needed on the personal dimensions of understanding.

The Fifth Realm: Ethics

The postmodern approach preserves one’s ability to exercise choice over one’s personhood, outlook on life, sexual orientation, contined existence, thought processes and basic integrity as a unique human being. Empirical knowledge is needed to understand that factual knowledge is an important resource in the improvement of understanding in personal relations and morals. This knowledge is necessary in making wise decisions. These decisions are based on consideration of alternatives and the prediction of consequences. “Moral decision presupposes a free and integral self-in-relation, and becoming a person depends upon making moral choices” (Kritsonis, 2007, p. 592).

The Sixth Realm: Synoptics

The sixth realm of synoptics is where the student would possess an integral outlook of which epistemology – the theory of knowledge, and metaphysics – what is real, are the primary basis for its function. Meanings in the sixth realms are comprehensively integrative and include history, religion, and philosophy. Empirical truths, esthetic (beauty), and synnoetic (personal knowledge) meanings are coherent wholes in this realm. Man is revealed by the choices he has made in the context of his given circumstance. The postmodern approach considers that human diversity and difference are beneficial to the pursuit of modern truths and are a threat to governance, authority or rule. Any threat to diversity would be to veer toward antidemocratic persuasion. Feyerabend (1999) and his view on epistemological anarchism believed that there was no view too absurd or immoral that he refused to consider or act on and no method was indispensable. As people are faced with change, the requirement for the perspectives of history, a larger vision of faith, and the critical comprehension afforded by philosophical reflection are needed more than ever (Kritsonis, 2007).

Concluding Remarks

In conclusion, there are patterns or structures in knowledge and an understanding of these typical forms is essential for the guidance of teaching, learning, and constructing the curriculum. The purpose of this article is to discuss significant aspects of the six realms of meaning as it relates to strategic planning in educational leadership. According to Kritsonis, the six realms of meaning are viewed as six fundamental patterns of meaning. These patterns are sequential and provide the foundation for all meanings that enter the human experience and emerge from an analysis of possible distinctive modes of human understanding. The patterns are symbolics, empirics, esthetics, synnoetics, ethics, and synoptics. The various patterns of knowledge are varieties of meaning, and the learning of these patterns is the clue to the effective realization of essential humanness through the curriculum of general education of the complete person ( 2007).

The entire school or organization’s future is at stake in strategic planning (Center for Organizational Development and Leadership, 2007). A postmodern approach for academic and administrative departments would be to implement plans and strategies that are narrowly focused and vital to their future. Strategic planning in educational leadership determines where a school is going over the next year or more and how it’s going to get there (McNamara, 2008). A plan too broad would allow for planning initiatives to go amiss from the correct course of focus or persons could get stuck and not be able to move forward Development and Leadership, 2007).

Kritsonis said,

A human being is in essence a creature who creates, discovers, enjoys, perceives, and acts on meaning. These meanings are of six general kinds: symbolic, empirical, esthetic, synnoetic, ethical, and synoptic. The educator can seize the opportunity to battle such areas as fragmentation, surfeit, and transience of knowledge, by showing what kinds of knowledge are required for full understanding and how the essential elements may be distinguished from the unessential ones in the selection of instruction materials. (2007, p.74)

The six realms of meaning as it relates to strategic planning in educational leadership are indicative of making national, state, district and local plans work for the success of all students to achieve goals in scholarly disciplines.

State University of New York at Stony Brook

State University Of New York at Stony Brook was founded in 1957 as the State University College on Long Island to educate secondary school teachers for science and mathematics. Near about 100 students enrolled at its beginning. Stony Brook University (SBU), is also known as the ‘State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNYSB)’ situated in Stony Brook, New York (on the north side of Long Island, it is about 65 miles east of Manhattan, New York). It is a public research university. Stony Brook University is the second highest ranked between the four university centers among the State Universities of New York. It has a total enrollment of more than 22,000 students. State University Of New York at Stony Brook was ranked 136 out of 8300 universities by the London Times Higher Education Supplement.

Altogether there are 32 graduate certificate courses, 119 undergraduate degree programs, about 102 master’s programs, and 40 doctoral programs offered in the Stony Brook campus of the university. There are different options opened for students like Arts and Humanities, Culture, Leadership and Service, Human Development, Global Studies, Information and Technology Studies, and Science and Society. Scientific research can be called as a trait at Stony Brook University. Then, there is The Marine Sciences Research Center providing a high class study program in oceanographic science, meteorology and atmospheric science,

If students from economically backward families need tuition assistance, then Stony Brook University calculates the total cost of attendance, and then subtracts the expected family contribution generally based on income, number of children, etc. and determines a student’s real financial need. To pay off for that need, Stony Brook University provides plentiful of private scholarships in a range of disciplines. There are also loans and grants available for the students.

State University of New York at Stony Brook’s was a wonderful picturesque background. It has over 120 buildings on 1100 acres of the beautiful New York woodland. It also has a number of different student’s organizations, including honorary, academic, service oriented, sports and recreation, special interest, media, pre-professional organizations and ethnical organizations. The art gallery gives an unique taste of its diverse art forms by its student alumni.

As far as recreation is concerned, the annual strawberry festival wraps the Stony Brook campus in delicious strawberry, a mixture of food stuffs and humorous costumes. With a varied taste of Educational excellence and co-curricular activities, the students get to see the real phase of life thus making their future life secure with real life experiences and a highly renowned world class degree.

Why Choose HSC Mathematics

Mathematics is one of the most commonly chosen subjects. If you are the type of student who has a technical mind and enjoy, or are good at thinking in a logical way, you should definitely choose some level of HSC maths. Not only will you find maths interesting, you will also come to realise that it will help you well into your university career and life beyond.

Maths is so universal that it will be a useful skill if you end up doing Commerce, Business, Medicine, Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy – just about any commonly chosen university course you can think of.

Maths Extension 1 and 2

We also recommend students who are good at maths to enrol in Mathematics Extension 2, to benefit from the subject’s large positive scaling effect. Students often have a hesitation about signing up for Maths Extension 2 when they need to decide near the end of year 11. The issue is, most students find Maths Extension 2 – and rightly so! It is not a subject that can easily mastered, and requires the most practice to familiarise among the different types of questions that can appear in an exam.

However, the scaling benefit is massive – even if you end up scoring the average raw mark for Extension 2, it is equivalent to the top 10%-15% for relatively high scaling subjects like HSC Physics, Chemistry, English Advanced, or Economics, or the top 10% for Biology. This is not including the added benefit of having Maths Extension 1 count for 2 units, instead of 1, which in itself is a huge benefit to your final aggregate score.

Similarly, Maths Extension 1 has a large positive scaling benefit in its own right. Its scaled mean of 40.0 in 2008 continues the trend of it increasing over the past few years. Currently, this places the scaling of Maths Extension 1 equal to that of scoring in the top 15% for English Advanced.

Other advantages of mathematics

There are other less direct advantages of choosing mathematics for your HSC. Firstly, because it is so common, you will find there is an abundance of good textbooks available for the subject. There is also an abundance of free notes and materials on the internet. Also you will find that if you ever need assistance outside of school, HSC maths is one of the most commonly offered subjects when looking for a maths tutor.

However, maths can be challenging at times. It is a subject which requires plenty of practice to master, as much of what goes into making a top maths student comes down to experience. For example, as mentioned in the previous article, How to do well in HSC maths, it is a subject that requires you to literally sit down and do thousands of questions before you gain enough experience for the top band. The main thing you will gain through practice is the ability to see overarching patterns and connections between seemingly unrelated topics – but also after doing so many questions, you will come to a point where you are familiar with every type of maths exam question that can be asked.

Mathematics tutoring

Somewhere down the line as you go through the Preliminary course and into the HSC, you may consider whether to seek maths tutoring. The advantage of choosing maths is that so many places offer mathematics tutoring, students have a nice selection of maths tutors to choose from.

Students will also have to decide about whether to seek out a private tutor for maths, or maths tuition classes. Each means of maths tutoring has its own advantages and disadvantages, and there are situations where one is appropriate and the other is not. To illustrate, generally speaking, class tuition is not suitable for students on either extremity of the ability spectrum – those that are exceptionally advanced and those that cannot follow on in a class environment. Those students may benefit more from a private tutor.

On the other hand, students that fall within the majority of the bell curve can benefit greatly from a class environment due to some or all of the following factors:

· Structured environment: reputable maths tutoring providers will always provide learning materials, homework, feedback and deliver their program in a structured way. This is the main thing private tutoring lacks.

· Healthy competition: between peers (students know exactly how well they’re doing relative to a sample of above-average students)

· Quality teachers: with private tuition, there’s no guarantee as to the quality of your tutor, whereas reputable tuition providers will always hire high quality tutors as they are experienced in finding and training talented educators.

That’s not to say the more talented individuals benefit less from a structured environment. Often, students find it is of greater benefit to be able to follow a structured study regime which can guarantee a comprehensive coverage of the entire course, rather than leaving it to private tuition, with a teaching approach that can leave gaps in their understanding.

The choice also comes down to economic factors. Private tutors often cost several times the cost of enrolling into a class-structured course.

Snoring Problems Helps Burn Calories Fast

Snoring problems during sleep – once thought as just a noisy disruption to your sleeping partner (perhaps the entire household) is now understood to be so much more.

When we sleep, turbulent airflow moves through the tissues of the nose and throat which may narrow during sleep – resulting in that awful noise.

And while anyone can snore, estimates have 45% of men and 30% of women snoring on a nightly basis. Generally, the more weight you’re carrying the more you’re likely to snore.

New research appearing in December 2008′s issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery supports the idea that those of us who snore actually burn calories fast when at rest during the day compared to those who sleep quietly.

The trouble is that the extra calorie burning doesn’t make a dent in the extra pounds that often accompany all the noisy snoring.

Lead study author Dr. Eric J. Kezirian says, “This study examined one of the important ways that obstructive sleep apnea can affect body weight. There are many things we do not understand about the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and body weight, and this is one.”

While obesity and sleep apnea are thought to be closely related, this latest work looked at ways obstructive sleep apnea can affect body weight. Medicine knows that losing weight improves obstructive sleep apnea in anyone who is overweight, but this is one of many ways this condition might be affected by weight.

”People with sleep apnea have a greater chance of being obese, and obese patients have a greater chance of having sleep apnea,” said Dr. Jordan Josephson, a specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and author of Sinus Relief Now. Sleep apnea is the number one cause of cardiac events like heart attack and stroke while sleeping.

The cross sectional study, a joint effort by researchers of the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University, measured the daytime resting energy output of 212 adults, some of who had sleep disordered breathing. The body mass index of the subjects was at a mean value of 28.3, considered at the high end of the overweight range.

The severity of the subject’s sleeping disorder was measured by the apnea-hypopnea index, which tells how many times in an hour a subject doesn’t breathe or if there is a reduction in air flow that’s enough to cause a wake from sleep.

The study found that for every 10 point increase in the index, there was a 27 calorie increase in resting energy expenditure during the day. Unexpected to be sure… subjects are overweight yet seem to have a higher metabolic rate overall.

More work is needed…

A second study, based on interviews with about 1500 workers, found that hay fever and other allergic reactions don’t appear to be linked with snoring or sleepiness during the day, unless the nasal passages are obstructed.

This work was conducted at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health located in Kitakyushu, Japan. Subjects in the nasal obstruction groups had higher odds of snoring (and dealing with daytime sleepiness), whether they had allergies or not.

”The present results strongly suggest that nasal obstruction causes sleep-disordered breathing and, thus, daytime sleepiness in individuals without allergic rhinitis as well as in those with allergic rhinitis,” the study authors tell us.

If you find you have nasal obstructions, seeking treatment for this condition will vastly improve snoring problems and the quality of your sleep, as well as your waking life.

Oklahoma states Coach apologizes for his public profanities

Travis Ford the Oklahoma State cowboys coach was caught on Saturday by the pitch side microphone hurling insults on guard Obi Muonelo during their game with Kansas. The game which Oklahoma States Cowboys lost to Kansas 78- 67. This prompted Ford to publicly apologize on the radio of his behavior.

Ford’s profanity was audibly heard on the ABC national radio newscast after, when Muonelo was taking a jog up court. Ford’s profane insults were able to get Muonelo’s attention has Ford’s yelling intensified and projected towards him.

This happened when Muonelo had to turn round and trap Kansas’ player Sherron Collins in the back yard for about 10 seconds while there was about 45.4 seconds left.

From his apology to Muonelo, Ford said that he regretted greatly that he had to say all those profanities. This was all broadcasted on WWLS- FM radio on Monday.

According to Rob Carolla the Big 12 spokesman, the all incident should be viewed to be an institutional affair and therefore the Big 12 would not get involved. The director of Athletic of Oklahoma State cowboys Mike Holder was also not aware of any insults or profanity as he watched the game via the television. It only came later and he had to inquire from Coach Ford.

According to director Holder, it is more essential to be calm and analyze the all scenario. This was when he had a telephone interview with the associated press. He further postulated that leadership calls for a lot of patience before making a ruling on any incident. However he believed that Coach Ford was extremely remorseful about the entire incident and he will check on his utterances and anger.

In his apology at the WWLS- FM radio, Ford said he is trying to improve and check on his language. And his wife is trying to help him through. Holder also promised that the incident will never happen again.

Despite the fact that the Cowboys had a game scheduled on Tuesday against Texas, The team’s spokesman Mike Noteware said that Ford will not issue any further statement beyond the comments he made on Monday via the radio.

The issue according to him and Holder was demoralizing especially when it was publicly broadcasted on the National Television. The incident if not controlled can ruin the image of the institution this was said by Holder.

Ford is not the first coach to have been captured by courtside microphones using profanity while on the sidelines or even far worse to be caught on camera. The other coach who was captured hurling profanity is Kansas football coach Mark Mangino. He was taped hurling insults towards Raymond Pendleton during a 2007 game. This was even widely circulated as a video on You Tube.

But according to Director Holder what matters is not which coach has been on the limelight yelling insults to his players but what concerns him is the image of Oklahoma State University both players and our coaches. He was heard saying that he is more concerned with what they do and how they do it as Oklahoma State University.

According to him what others do is of no consequence. But to ensure that high codes and standard of behaviors are adhered to At Oklahoma State University.

Admissions

With an acceptance rate is only 15%, it is the most selective in Saudi Arabia. University admission policy which applies certain criteria to ensure admissions of the most promising students. As of 2009/2010 academic year, the cutoff percentage score for admission was determined to be 83% comprising 20% for the high school certificate, 30% for the general capabilities test (similar to SAT), and 50% for the collective test performances (test of high school’s maths, physics, chemistry, English).

Ranking

As of October 2008, THE – QS World University Rankings ranked KFUPM at 209 amongst the top 300 universities around the world.

Accreditation

All programs of the engineering colleges were evaluated for “Substantial-Equivalency recognition by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in April 2001. They were found substantially equivalent to similar accredited programs in the U.S.

The new trends in accreditation criteria have brought outcome assessment to focus. Accrediting agencies such the ABET, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Computer Science Accreditation Board and the National Architectural Accrediting Board require programs or colleges seeking accreditation to have self-assessment. Industry push and competitive job markets have also contributed to the need for continuous program-quality improvement that focus on student learning and preparation for professional practice after graduation.

Rutgers University – named Most Diverse National University for thirteen consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” ranked one of the top 63 North American research universities by the prestigious Association of American Universities, first in the nation for graduate programs in School Library Services and Women’s History…

…and former stomping grounds of punk rock porno princess Joanna Angel.

Several “unicorns,” or fantastic mythical legends that people want to believe regardless of the fact that no evidence substantiating them exists, about and around porn have haunted US culture for decades. Some major ones include: porn is only made by men, and the industry itself is run by the skeeziest men of all; although all talent are stupid, women talent are stupid and naïve (presumably because they are being taken advantage of by those aforesaid men); porn people party party party and do very little “actual” work; and finally, although some feminists may see the potential for sexual liberation in adult content, no self-respecting feminist would ever in their right mind make porn!

I can assure you that each of these presumptions is far from true and there are many people who can substantiate that claim with their personal experiences and work, but don’t take my word for it – the brilliant, beautiful, and super hott Joanna Angel took more than a minute out from running her “mini-empire” to answer some questions for Porn Valley Vantage. Her perspective picks a fight with those aforementioned unicorns and several of their friends. Read on!!

First off, thanks so much for taking the time out for this Joanna. I know you’re crazy busy and have been at this whole porn thing for a long time… but for how long exactly? And, for those who don’t know, what specifically do you do?

“Well jeez… I started my first website eight years ago. I don’t know if that means I’ve been in the industry for eight years; but, at the very least, I’ve been naked on the internet for eight years. What do I do? Well I direct, produce, and star in my own porn movies. My company, Burning Angel, is known as one of the originators of the ‘alt porn’ genre, meaning we feature models with tattoos and piercings… girls who represent more of the alt/indie subculture. In addition to the adult content, we also feature band interviews and record reviews. So, in a nutshell, I guess you can say I run a mini-empire filled with sex and rock & roll!

Haha nice – I bet most people would love to run their own mini-empire, especially one filled with sex and rock & roll!! So, what got you into the business in the first place? What did you do before?

I got myself into the business! No one and nothing really got me in. I was in college, and my roommate and I thought it would be fun and interesting to start a porn site… so we did. It was very small at first, just a few photo sets of our friends and of myself. It didn’t really feel like I was ‘getting into the industry,’ which is a funny thing about internet companies. You don’t have anything tangible to represent what you do. A few years later, the company became more of a reality when I started meeting other people in the business and we began producing and updating the website on a regular basis. Then it really became my job and my life. Until then, it almost felt like a science experiment!

Before porn, I was a full-time student at Rutgers University. I had random part time jobs on the side such as waiting tables or working as a cashier at a piercing place. Nothing too particularly exciting.

So, what’s your favorite thing about working as talent? What’s most surprising or unexpected?

Umm… the sex?? Haha! but really, the sex is pretty damn good. And on that same note, I think what has been most surprising for me is the amazing sex I’ve had with people who were just not my ‘type’ at all. Before porn, I always kinda hooked up with the same types of guys – guys who were in the same age range, listened to the same music, and dressed pretty similar. I don’t know why that happened… if they were just the people I was attracted to or, in some instances, the people I thought I was supposed to be attracted to. In porn, I’ve worked with guys I would never have thought were attractive at all and have had some of the best sex of my life with them. It’s really pretty amazing! I will say that the whole experience has made me a lot more open-minded, and I don’t believe in really having a ‘type’ anymore. I mean, before I got into porn I would have never thought I could share something so passionate with, for example, a 55 year-old married German father of three (whose wife and three kids, incidentally, I’ve met on several occasions – I think they’re great, and they think I’m great!).

Oh wow… this idea of moving beyond ‘type’ is really interesting, but what about the other aspects of your work? Is there anything surprising or unexpected about your work behind the scenes?

Well I think the way this business operates is pretty fascinating – the way shoots can be so predictable and unpredictable at the same time, the way something feels in person as opposed to the way it’s translated on camera. And what I really find fascinating is considering website traffic and determining what areas or what girls get clicked on a lot versus who or what barely gets clicked on at all. I feel like I’m able to look at the world in a very 1984-ish way when I stare at the stats and realize the last things I would ever expect people to like are actually very popular.

When I first started running this company, I only had a passion for the creative side of things – planning out scenes, casting them, planning out the ideas, and writing funny dialogue. But as time as gone by I’ve really come to love the ‘business’ end of this business and figuring out what sells, what doesn’t, what people like, what they don’t, and how different types of marketing can affect these numbers. It really is quite fascinating!

Man this sound like it takes up A LOT of time… has working in the industry affected your personal life at all?

Yeah… in the sense that I don’t really have one anymore! Haha! but I think anyone who owns any kind of business is in the same boat. Running your own company is really difficult; and whereas most employees of a company only have to think about accomplishing their duties, the owner has to think about everyone’s duties plus their own. And let me tell you – doing only a quarter of this stuff naked with a dick in my a** is not an easy task!

I used to read a lot of books, and last week I finally got around to reading a book that I have seriously been too busy to read for the past three years. I love playing video games, and it’s been at least 18 months since I touched my Wii. I’ve lost touch with a lot of friends… not because I’m sick of them, but because I’m just simply too busy to keep up with them. When you run your own company, work just has to come first. Thankfully I am in a relationship with someone in the business who has just as much going on as I do, and we work on a lot of different projects together. This makes my work life more personal if that makes any sense.

It does, and honestly it doesn’t sound that different from what happens in many other occupational fields – lawyers dating lawyers, teachers with teachers etc etc. So given all of this, where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years… hmm… well I really do hope that Burning Angel is just as big as all the other ‘big’ companies in the adult industry. I hope we can become a fun punky alternative to Hustler, Playboy, or Vivid for example while still being right up there with them… and if I don’t get us there, no one will!!

Damn Joanna, you really do have an impressive amount of ambition! I almost feel silly asking this after everything you’ve already said, but what else?

What do people need to know about you? Hmmm you know I don’t know… Check out some of my websites – joannaangel.com and burningangel.com are just two of them, but I actually have eight altogether and listing them all would just get silly! Oh, I also have a toy line! People can buy my sex toys in the BurningAngel.com store or at any adult retail store. You can also read my blog at xoxojoannaangel.com or follow me on twitter. Anything else that I haven’t said here I’m sure I will say there!”

Wow.

So many years ago, when I was first wrapping my head around porn and feminism and unicorns and all their associated complexities, I ran across a piece that Joanna had written on being a feminist with a porn site in Carly Milne’s (ed) Naked Ambition – Women who are Changing Pornography (2005). In it, Joanna discusses being kind of a bratty college kid looking for attention and the process she underwent to become a confident woman working to challenge popular notions of sexually desirable, hott, and what it means to be a feminist with her indie/alt sexiness.

She opened with a statement that has always stuck with me: “There are two kinds of sluts in this world: the kind I used to be, and the kind I am now. The former sleeps with guys for attention… The latter sleeps with guys because she genuinely likes having sex.” The fact that Joanna underwent some significant personal growth and reflection via the development of Burning Angel is embedded in this statement.

After she tells us the whole story, she closes with: “I’m not sure I started a revolution, but I know I started something pretty awesome, and most important, I feel like a real, true, honest-to-god feminist.” (sic) This statement has also always stuck with me. It gets at the authenticity of experience integral to feminist thought and action… a level of authenticity that is sadly absent from many dimensions of our culture and social world.

* * *

Porn Valley Vantage’s feature Back Stories explores the lives of people who work in the adult film industry, as well as those amorphous dimensions of the business that seem to have taken on a life of their own. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
