Hydroponics is big business all over the world and consequently many excellent feeds are available, and like plants everybody has their favourites.

Choosing a feed to suit your growing medium

It is very important that you choose an appropriate nutrient for your method of growing. Whilst it is possible mix and match hydro nutrients with organic growing mediums or even organic nutrients with hydroponic substrates we do not recommend that this is the best course of action for most growers. There are so many feeds designed specifically for certain uses/growing media that you should be able to find an appropriate feed. Using the wrong kind of nutrient for your growing medium can cause more harm than good – for example using a mineral based hydroponic feed with an organic soil will negate the benefits that soil growing can offer. You would be much better choosing a good organic feed in this instance. Broadly speaking there are three media types when talking about nutrient formulations:

Hydroponic Nutrients: suitable for rockwool, perlite, vermiculite and clay pebbles. These nutrients are mineral based and are formulated for direct uptake by your plants.

Organic Nutrients: suitable for organic soils. These nutients are designed to feed the soil rather than the plant. They encourage biological activity and take full advantage of natures own methods.

Coco Nutrients: suitable for coco coir medium. These Nutrients often utlilise the unique properties of coco as a growing medium better then hydroponic nutrients

Choosing a Hydroponic Feed

As there are so many good feeds, we encourage you to switch nutrients every now and again in case you find one that you or your plants prefer. They are all good and all have their slight differences, and it is good to try the various products available in the hunt for better yields. Just because you are getting good results with one package, doesn’t necessarily mean that that package is the ‘best’ for you. Constant experimentation will help you to refine your complete growing style and methods, and we highly recommend it.

Below we try to give you some practical information about each Hydroponic feed to try and help you pick one in relation to water suitability.

First we look at the three main categories of feeds, soft water, hard water and universal feeds. These relate to the type of water you have. You can get a good idea of water hardness from the pH level and to keep things simple in this article, we will use pH to guide you as to feed suitability.

Soft Water Feeds – Soft water has little or no dissolved minerals in it and consequently a low pH. This water is ideal for soft water feeds. Soft water feeds can be used in any type of water although pH adjustment may be needed. Mixing soft water nutrient solutions does not usually affect pH.

Soft water feeds are ideal for water with pH between 5.5 and 7.8

Hard Water Feeds – Hard water has some dissolved mineral elements already in it, mostly calcium and magnesium and consequently it has a high pH. Hard water feeds are only for very hard water. Mixing hard water nutrient solutions automatically drops the pH quite a bit.

Ideal for water with pH 7.8 and above.

Universal Feeds – Good for water that isn’t too hard and isn’t too soft. Automatically drops the pH a bit. Usually at full strength a universal feed will drop the pH approximately 0.8 e.g. from 6.8 to 6.0.

Ideal for water with a pH between 6.8 and 7.8

In the history of medical colleges in India, the names of Ayurvedic colleges are a few in number. As far the generation of Ayurvedic and Unani treatment in India is concerned, the name of the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia college is simply the best.

Renowned social worker and the pioneer Hakeem Abud Najeed Khan established the Ayurvedic & Unani Tibbia College in the year 1889. The institution is located at Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in New Delhi, India. In 1889, after the formal;inauguration by a local commissioner, it was referred to as the Madrasa Tibbia, and functioned under the Anjuman-e-Tibbia society. After the death of founder Majeed in 1901, his younger brother Hakim Wasil took charge of the Madrasa, and in 1903, Masih-ul-Hakim Ajmal, better known as Hakim Ajmal Khan, raised the quality of education in the institution. The efforts of Ajmal Khan helped extend the infrastructural site over an area of 50 acres including a garden of herbs.

Five years after Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, laid the foundation stone of the Tibbia College in the year 1916 on March 29, the institution had buildings that comprised classrooms, laboratories, hospital pharmacies, hostels, office and staff quarters. The blend of classical, colonial, Mughul and Indian architectures was utilised for constructing the institute’s buildings. Ajmal Khan previously corresponded with the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi during the Khilafat Movement, a political campaign launched mainly by Muslims in South Asia in the aftermath of the World War I. And, subsequently, for the association with Gandhi, on February 13, 1921, the latter had inaugurated the institution. There are several famous Medical colleges in Delhi.

After a long time, on February 15, 2008, the Delhi government announced about its intentions of upgrading the college into a university, in recognition of the college’s contributions to Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. The institution has a hospital attached which provides treatment having one hundred and ten beds. Practical training is also provided to all the students studying here. Thus, another milestone have been achieved in the Medical Colleges in India.

Administration : Delhi being one of the major hubs for such treatment institutes, several colleges of this class are here. Its Ayurvedic & Unani Tibbia College is definitely a famous name among them. This college receives grants from University Grants Commission (UGC) and is affiliated to Delhi University (DU) in the year 1973. Ayurved ic and Unani Tibbia College is a very popular institution that provides Science (Ayurvedic) education to its students.

Courses offered: The four-year Bachelor degrees that are offered by the university are- Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery.

Other activities: Besides the college and hospital, Ajmal Khan helped to establish a Hindustani Dawakhana and Ayurvedic Rasayanashastra for manufacturing medicines. The Dawakhana, which emerges as a Gothic cathedral with its curious blend of Asiatic and Latin architecture, was founded in the year 1910. Due to the presence of the herbal garden within its campus, the dispensary was able to get patents for 84 rare herbal formulae like Sekhon, Musafi, Sarbat-e-Sadar, and Hebab-Kebatare. The institution developed and upgraded research activities in several unparalleled medicines, such as, Roulfiaserpentina, the medicine to recover somebody having mental problems.

Then again, you might quickly realize that you have just been listening to and enjoying the most original, funniest female comedian in America today. There is currently no second to Wanda Skyes if you want unrestrained, pure laughter. If you cannot filter out language and put it into perspective, your experience will be slightly less funny. She got a break opening for Chris Rock and was soon hired to write for “The Chris Rock Show”, and took advantage of the opportunity to win a writing Emmy. That led to winning the American Comedy Award for Outstanding Female Stand-Up Comic in 2001. The rest is history, including another Emmy.

Two presentations will make you quickly aware of Wanda’s sassy, squeaky delivery and sharp tongue. The first is “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied” when Wanda takes on the stock market, national security and some Catholic priests among others. The second is “Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired” at Seattle’s Moore Theatre, where Wanda turns comic truth and common sense into some thought-provoking humor.

Please do not buy or rent either of these presentations unless you are willing to laugh so hard that you might fall off of your chair. If laughter is truly the best medicine, then you may address Wanda as Dr. Sykes.

One thing is for sure: Wanda Sykes is the best current female comedian.
