Pediatric Ringworm in Children

Commonly believed to be caused by a worm, ringworm is actually caused by one of two fungi known as Trichophyton tonsurans and Microsporum. The harmless fungus can infect the skin of the body (tinea corporis), scalp (tinea capitis), groin (tinea cruris), and feet (tinea pedis). Although people of any age can contract ringworm, it is most commonly seen in children.

Ringworm on the Rise in the U.S.

A 2010 study conducted in 44 Kansas City elementary schools, with grades kindergarten through fifth, found that 7 percent of the 10, 514 students attending were infected with ringworm of the scalp, or tinea captitis. On the scalp, ringworm appears as itchy, scaly patches where hair has fallen out. If left untreated, it can spread all over the scalp and result in permanent hair loss. Pediatricians and educators claim to see increasing numbers of ringworm cases of all types in their offices and classrooms.

Characteristics of Ringworm

When on the body, ringworm appears as a red, circular rash with clear skin in the middle. The scaly lesions itch and can spread to other parts of the body. On the scalp, it has a similar appearance, but may be mistaken for dandruff. When left untreated, it causes hair to fall out, leaving bald spots. Infected nails appear discolored and yellowish, become brittle, thick, and crumble or flake easily.

Children Are the Most Susceptible

Children in school environments, especially those in crowded city schools, run the risk of contracting ringworm from infected classmates. Children are more likely to handle family pets or pets of others with untreated ringworm or practice poor hygiene. The fungus also commonly grows in soil and children can encounter it by playing in loose soil or dirt. Children in warm, humid climates, or those who are immuno-compromised due to disease or medications, also have increased risk of infection by the fungus that causes ringworm.

Home Treatment

Many over-the-counter anti-fungal treatments exist that can often effectively treat ringworm infections found on the body, feet, or groin area. Pharmacies offer the medications in powders, lotions, and creams. Check the ingredient label before purchasing an over-the-counter remedy to verify it contains miconazole, clotrimazole, or other anti-fungal medication. Wash your child’s bed linens and towels daily and keep the affected area clean and dry. Most infections should resolve within four weeks.

When to See a Doctor

Ringworm infecting the body that does not resolve, within four weeks, with proper home treatment and hygiene will require a visit to your local pediatrician. He can prescribe a stronger topical medication for these persistent skin conditions. All ringworm infections of the scalp, and most of the nails, require a four-week course of prescription oral antifungal medication. Additionally, you should call your doctor if your child’s ringworm seems to worsen, swell, redden, or ooze. He or she may have a bacterial infection due to scratching the lesions.

Prevention of Ringworm

To prevent ringworm, dry your child’s feet thoroughly after bathing. Shampoo his or her hair often, especially after a haircut. Instruct your child not to share combs, brushes, or hats. Invest in a pair of water shoes for your child to wear while swimming in a pool or lake. These also prevent cuts and scrapes from rough pool bottoms and sides or rocks and sticks in lakes. Remind your child to wash hands often, especially after playing outside. Finally, tell your child to avoid touching animals with patches of missing hair as this could indicate ringworm.

When in Doubt, Call the Doctor

If your child has a persistent, unexplained skin lesion, make an appointment with your pediatric clinic. He or she can quickly determine whether the condition needs prescription treatment or requires further evaluation.

Snoring for children on the other hand, can possibly be an indication of obstructive sleep apnea, where breathing stops for 60 seconds at most, and usually followed with a snort or gasp. And the truth is that sleep apnea is more delicate for children than for adults, parents should really pay attention to the possible sleeping disorder of their kids.

The common effect of snoring for young children is that they could possibly suffer from nighttime and cough asthma. So if adults are recommended not to disregard their snoring, then how much more for children.

There are also findings which claims that when a child in middle school shows lower academic performance, they are more likely snoring during this period.

All of these presented facts are enough to convince the parents to take the necessary actions the moment their children show such symptoms.

However, do not panic when such a situation happens. You can consult a physician first to ensure if the child has caught an illness related to snoring already. Meanwhile, if your child produces mild snoring, which is affected by certain allergy or illness, experts states that it can possibly be treated at home. More likely, the way you treat your cold.

The following are suggested methods:

• Saltwater, this is good to eradicate the blockage problems caused by the mucus. Though saltwater nasal drops are available in drugstores, however, one can do a formula at home. Just melt 1/4 teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water. Sterilize the water by boiling it. You can place it in a nose dropper as soon as it cools down.

• You can also try to take oral decongestant intended for children. According to some doctors, decongestants doesn’t actually cure an allergy or cold, but it relieves the symptoms. It may reduce the snoring since it helps the children enhance their breathing. When using this medication, be sure to have the right dosage for the child’s age.

• Avoid products that include antihistamines, this can trigger snoring since this is identified to be a sedating medicine. Sedating medicines cut down the muscle tone of the throat’s tissues since it tends to relax muscles and nerves, when the muscle tone falls down, the tendency is that it will trigger snoring.

• Observe your child as he sleeps, then seek for the best position where he can keep his airway open, through this he will be able to breathe comfortably. The September health care reform mandates will decrease the health care insurance alternatives available for kids. All over the country, many private medical insurance carriers appear to have decided not to insure youth who purchase standalone policies after September 22nd. Not all carriers have announced their decision on this issue, but many that have are choosing eliminate these types of policies.

Youth who apply for medical insurance with at one or both parents will not be affected. children who are covered by standalone policies that were effective prior to the mandate will be allowed to keep their existing policies.

Who’s the bad guy here? We can fault the insurance carriers. However, asking an insurance carrier to insure unhealthy people is like asking banks to underwrite loans for people with poor credit scores. Congress might more at fault than the insurance carriers.

Health care insurance carriers do make tons of money but their margins are miniscule. They don’t make tons of money on per policy. Adding just a few additional significantly unprofitable people can make them lose money or make their premiums unaffordable.

A unsophisticated example would involve an insurance carrier that insures one hundred people against cardiac problems. Each person pays a thousand and twenty dollars a year. One of the insured people has a heart attack annually. It costs the carrier 0,000. The company pays the health care bills . It earns ,000..

After a new law goes into effect, they have to insure five costly people. Every year one of these five new people has a myocardial infarction that costs an additional 0,000. This means that the insurance company doubled its outgoing money, but not its revenue.

If the insurance carrier responded by increasing the cost of the coverage, their policyholders might respond also. Some would terminate their policies. Chances are the healthier people would be much more likely to decide to end their policies. It is a sure thing that their prices would have to go up again and again as their ratio of healthy to unhealthy policyholders would keep moving in the wrong direction.

When an insurance company is mandated to insure people without regard to their medical history, they run the risk of closing their doors. This could sound ludicrous to you, but big companies go out of business from time to time.

Perhaps if the US car companies had been more financially responsible, they wouldn’t have needed our government to bail them out. Perhaps banks should have been more responsible a few years ago and not underwritten so many soon-to-be bad loans.

A legal mandate cannot change the laws of the marketplace. If an insurance company takes on unprofitable business it will have to raise its rates. If they are forced to raise their prices more than their competitors, they will wind up with fewer customers.

Our lawmakers wrote a law that was supposed to provide universal medical coverage to youth. This law has had the opposite effect. Fewer options for insurance are now available for children.

This has to make many voters wonder if the other, soon to be enacted health care reform mandates are going to work just as well. Our senators and congressmen spent a lot of time demonizing the insurance carriers. They are no more or less wicked than institutions in any other business sector. They spent a lot of time telling us how much money they make overall. The real issue is what they make per insured person.

We’ve gotten crafty rhetoric and at least one poorly thought out mandate. Let’s hope that this was the only one they got wrong. Say a prayer.
