Vancouver 2010 Olympics: The City Of Vancouver

From the figure skating to the bob sledding, from the ice hockey, to the ski jumping, there is nothing quite like being there to witness the winter Olympic games. And if you’re planning to see the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, it might be nice to know a little something about this gem in British Columbia. So, just in time for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, here is The City of Vancouver’s history:

The very first European  to pay a visit to the area that would eventually become the city of Vancouver was José María Narváez of Spain, in 1791, although Samuel Bawlf insists that Francis Drake may have visited the area in 1579. In either case, a year after Navarez, George Vancouver visited the place and officially put it on the map, giving everything their modern day European names. Simon Fraser, an explorer is reputed to be the first person to set foot in the actual area of Vancouver itself (Vancouver was supposed to have scouted the surrounding areas).  In 1808, Fraser traveled from the east, down the Fraser River to the area where the University of British Columbia would eventually be built.

The city grew up around a gold rush a few years later when Fraser claimed to have found gold in the area and then a lumber trade which established the first permanent town. The City of Vancouver was officially incorporated on 6 April 1886, the same year that the first railroad arrived, finally bringing the young town an easy way for people to find their way over there. The name, of course in memory and honor of George Vancouver, was chosen by William Van Horne, the president of the Canadian railroad who came to dedicate the terminal in the new city in the same year. The year 1886 also saw a complete rebuilding effort of the new city since a fire razed the city. A new Vancouver fire department was established after the fire (and not to worry, for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, the city of Vancouver now has a world class fire department).  

The city was built largely on the strength of the natural resources surrounding it and of course on the presence of the railroad link which allowed the materials to be exported to other parts of Canada. Manufacturing did not really take in the city until much later since there was little call for such services in a small town like Vancouver.

Throughout the 20th century, the city grew by leaps and bounds until the City of Vancouver was finally chosen to host the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games.

Asheville, North Carolina – Is This The Happiest City In The World?

Asheville, North Carolina boasts the biggest house in the United States, Biltmore House, on the Biltmore Estate to the south of the city. With its own indoor pool and bowling alley, this 250 room house was the work of the wealthy George Vanderbilt II. Completed at the end of the nineteenth century and originally built as a private residence, the house and adjacent gardens are now a top tourist attraction, not to be missed.

With the city now boasting a population of 83,318, according to recent figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, it has been labeled one of the nation’s top 25 arts destinations, by AmericanStyle magazine. Lansing, Michigan: A Capital City with Many Interesting Secrets

Lansing is Michigan’s state capital.  Go to the Michigan Historical Center in downtown Lansing. These connected buildings house the Archives, the State Library and the Historical Museum. The museum has interesting displays beginning with the dawn of the Native Americans to the present days. One of the interesting facts was the surveyor’s layout of the grids of Michigan, which President Jefferson ordered. There are baseline and meridian roads, which were the starting point for the surveyors

Find about the great war between Ohio and Michigan. No one was injured. Rumor has it that one chicken died. The war lasted for a few weeks.  One day the men from Ohio would fire their guns.  The next day the men from Michigan would do the same.  This went on and on.  The results of this conflagration was that Michigan got the Upper Peninsula, while Ohio got a sliver of land which is now Toledo. Who got the best deal? At that time it was Ohio. Later on, the tables shifted.

The state capital in Lansing was built on a budget and came in under it (mirabile dictu). The building is built with native woods, especially pine, and stone and bricks. Everything else is painted to give the illusion of marble, walnut and other precious building materials. The floor of the rotunda is glass, opaque, but strong. Because of the Chicago fire, two results occurred. The building had to be fire proof, or nearly so. The bidding on the architectural designs were extended, because many were burned from the fire. Apparently they did a good job. The building still stands and some of the paint is from the original construction.

What is a trip to Lansing without going to MSU (Michigan State University), which is right down the street a couple of miles in East Lansing. Drive around the campus; very beautiful. There are many museums on campus. It seems that each college has their own collection of artifacts, which they put on display.

The Ghostly Hauntings of the City of Exeter

As a fan of ghost stories and the supernatural I thought I would write about some of the more well known ghost stories from the city of Exeter, England. The city of Exteter is well known for its shipping and its spooks.

The Black Shadow

Location: Exeter – Alleyway that runs from the top of South Street to the Cathedral Green
As this witness walked down the alleyway they became aware of a dark shadow looming over them and felt a presence over their right shoulder. The man turned and saw a black mass which seemed to dissipate upwards into the night.

Queen Henrietta Maria

Location: Exeter – Barnfield House
This Queen stayed here to give birth before escaping to France, though she also appears to continue to remain here today.

The Haunted Three Headed Entity

Location: Exeter – Cathedral Green
Seen moving silently across the Green, this strange apparition is reported to possess three heads.

The Fishy Men

Location:Exeter – Coastline
Fishermen on the shore caught a four foot tall humanoid, with duck-like feet and a tail protruding from its back. It tried to escape, but was killed when the fishermen beat it with sticks. Another fish-man was caught a few months later in the same area, though this one was described with more seal-like qualities.

Haunting Plague Victims

Location: Exeter – Devon Air Radio Studios, St David’s Hill
Built on an old plague pit, the ghosts of the inhabitants are blamed for the sounds of closing doors (in places the doors are already closed) and other unexplained events.

The Vanishing Woman

Location: Exeter – Ernest Jones, next to the Guildhall
A female ghost is said to vanish as quickly as she appears, and is blamed for knocking over displays and setting off the fire alarm.

The Ghostly Nun and Monk

Location: Exeter – Exeter Cathedral
Seen only around this time, the nun quickly disappears once spotted. A monk has also been reported in the area surrounding the cathedral, while a small group of witnesses heard music coming from within the building although it was dark and empty at the time.

Ghost of The Last Executed Prisoner in Exeter Prison

Location: Exeter – Exeter prison
Two prisoners reported seeing a middle-aged man walking along the upper gallery, vanishing as he reached a cell door. After staff carried out a little research, they discovered the man was the last person to be executed in the prison.

Ghostly Workman

Location: Exeter – Exeter University
A phantom man dressed in painter’s overalls has been seen walking down the corridors of Exeter University.

The Cycling Ghost

Location: Exeter – Exeter’s Underground Passages
The guides of the underground passages, normally open to the public, tell of a phantom cyclist who passes through the area. There is also rumoured to be hidden treasure somewhere in the tunnels.

The Haunting Sound of Silk

Location: Exeter – Globe Hotel
An American guest at the hotel reported waking several times during the night to the sound of swirling, as if someone was waving armfuls of silk scarves through the air. The woman in the room next door also reported hearing the sounds.

The Sweet Smelling Rose Lady

Location: Exeter – Guildhall Shopping Centre basement
A shadowy form of a woman has been reported as haunting this area, the smell of roses accompanying her presence.

The Ghostly Victorian Nurse

Location: Exeter – Hospital
A ghostly nurse occasionally appears by the bed of anyone close to death and rearranges any nearby flowers so that they form a cross.

The Wet Murdered Maid

Location: Exeter – Lord Haldon Hotel
This tragic figure fell pregnant after having an affair with a local landowner – he killed the maid to cover the relationship up, and now she returns to the top of the building, dripping wet.

The Supernatural Giant Bat

Location: Exeter – Magdalen Road
A witness walking down the road late at night stated he watched a giant bat, with a wingspan of 1.2 metres, swoop around the churchyard along this road.

Heavy Breathing Poltergeist

Location: Exeter – Marks & Spencer store
Said to be built on an old Roman burial ground, phantom heavy breathing has been reported from staff, as have light poltergeist-like behaviour.

The Crying Waiting Mother

Location: Exeter – Martin’s Lane, general area
A weeping woman waits along this lane at night – her daughter ran away to follow Sir Francis Drake on his last voyage, and never returned.

The Ghostly Little Girl with her toy Rag Doll

Location: Exeter – Prospect Inn
This young child only appears once a year in the upper part of the building. She is said to smile sweetly at any witnesses, before quickly fading away.

The Ghostly Viking Ship

Location: Exeter – River Exe
A local legend has it that a ghostly Viking long ship complete with an angry fighter passes up the river.

The Spectral Coughing Fit

Location: Exeter – Royal Clarence Hotel
Built on the site of Walter Raleigh’s fathers’ house, some attribute the coughing sounds to Walter himself.

The Ghostly Return of Sir Francis Drake

Location: Exeter – Ship Inn, Martin’s Lane
The inn claims to have once banned Drake from coming in, as his behaviour once drunk was intolerable – maybe this is the reason he returns here.

The Ghostly Red Light

Location: Exeter – St Layes, ruins of church
A red light would appear to anyone who was due a tragedy in their lives – it was commonly seen during the blitz of World War Two by those who would be killed by bombs or the resulting fires.

The Ghostly Woman’s Heels

Location: Exeter – St Thomas railway station
Sitting on the platform with her dog, this women heard the sound of heels walk past her twice, although no one could be seen. The dog circled and barked before rolling over and acted as if being stroked.

The Wandering Monk

Location: Exeter – The Cowick Barton Inn, Cowick Lane
This holy man has been seen walking around outside the pub, as well as inside two local houses and in a nearby field.

The Ghostly Tall Glowing Figure

Location: Exeter – Unnamed building near the Cathedral
Two men trying to steal lead from a roof screamed in horror as they realised a gaunt ghostly figure stood by their sides, pointing accusingly at them. Their cries alarmed the neighbourhood, but they escaped never to be seen again.

Judge Jeffreys Ghost

Location: Exeter – White Hart Inn
A popular haunting figure down in the southwest, the Judge’s shade has been reported in this public house. A woman in a long black cape, said to resemble the lady from the ‘Scottish Widows’ advert, has been seen in the courtyard.

Keeping Austin Weird: What to Expect From Texas’ Capital City

Despite being the capital city of Texas, Austin is a city that prides itself on being far from ordinary. Known as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’, Austin offers visitors a vacation that is as diverse as it is exciting. After all, as a city with the motto ‘Keep Austin Weird’, a visit to Austin is sure to be a vacation with a difference.

As you might expect from a city referred to as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’, Austin has a vibrant live music scene with more music venues per capita than any other U.S city. Austin’s music revolves around the numerous entertainment venues that can be found on its historic 6th Street. Originally known as Pecan Street, East-6th Street is the heart of the Austin entertainment district and plays host to a multitude of bars, clubs and music venues. Located along the length of East-6th Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35, you’ll find many venues offering live music at one time or another during the week.

Austin is also the venue for an annual film, music and multimedia festival known as South by Southwest, which takes place every spring. Centred around the downtown Austin Convention Centre, each part of the South by Southwest festival is relatively independent of one another with different start and end dates. The musical branch of the festival is one of the largest music festivals in the United States with more than 1,400 performers playing across dozens of venues around the city, while the film branch has quickly become one of the world’s premiere film festivals, focussing on new directing talent.

Zilker Park in Austin is the venue for the Austin City Limits Music Festival, an annual three-day music and art festival. Bringing together more than 130 bands over eight stages, the festival combines rock, country, folk, indie, Americana, hip-hop, reggae and bluegrass artists, and attracts a crowd of around 65,000 music-lovers every day. The festival has been such a huge success that it is often compared to other top rock festivals held in the United States, including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Coachella. Other annual events held in Austin include Eeyore’s Birthday Party and the Austin Reggae Festival – previously named the Bob Marley Festival.

If Austin’s music scene isn’t for you, Austin is also the home of a lot of artists. On Guadalupe, you’ll find a host of local artistic talent selling their works at the Renaissance Market; while every first Thursday of the month, the eclectic shops on South Congress stay open late, with artists selling their artwork on the sidewalks, accompanied by musicians playing in the streets. For a more contemporary view of Austin’s art scene, pay a visit to the Blanton Museum of Art, a 155,000 square foot museum situated on the University’s campus, housing some 17,000 works of art from Europe, the United States and Latin America.

Residents in Austin need little cause to celebrate, and ‘Austinites’, as they are known, take pride in their eccentricities and often celebrate the differences between themselves and other cities in the U.S. The local motto – ‘Keep Austin Weird’ – features on innumerable bumper stickers, tT-shirts and other memorabilia. Famous Austinites include country singer Willie Nelson, cyclist Lance Armstrong, Aactress Sandra Bullock and tennis player Andy Roddick.

When it comes to eating out in Austin, you would be forgiven for expecting the Texas ‘Holy Trinity’ of barbecue, Tex-Mex and chicken-fried steak. However, Austin now possesses a much more sophisticated and international flair, with the Wall Street Journal naming the city as one of the country’s “up and coming culinary hotspots.”

To get the very best experience of this culturally diverse and exciting city, look for a hotel in Austin that is situated in the Central or Downtown areas of the city. Just remember that Austin is a city where it’s considered normal to be a little out of the ordinary!

Chicago is the largest city in the state American State of Illinois. Currently the city has grossed over 2.8 million residents by the last official consciences. During the modern age of transportation revolution, the city has successfully retained its status as a major hub in the highly populated city of Chicago, both for industrial and infrastructure sector of the economy, Chicago’s main airport, International Airport has the crown of being the second busiest airport in the world. In historic year of 2008, the city hosted 45.6 million domestic and overseas visitors. Chicago’s metropolitan area has the 4th largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of all metropolitan areas in the world. It’s GDP has over taken a large number of small scale countries in the economic run over the past decade.

The grand city of Chicago has seen many phases of evolutions during the recent decades and have developed itself into a major a center for business and finance. It is listed as one of the world’s top ten Global Financial Centers. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Chicago as an alpha world city due to Chicago’s important role in the global economic system. The residents of Chicago can proudly admit that the titles granted to the city has been successfully full filled the titles provided to the city.

In 2010 survey collaboration between Foreign Policy and A.T Kearney ranking the world’s top global cities, Chicago ranked 6th just after Paris and Hong Kong and just above Los Angeles and Singapore. The ranking assesses five dimensions of traditional measurements of traditional criteria of full filling the requirements of being a super city: value of capital markets, diversity of human capital, international information resources, international cultural resources, and political influence. Chicago is a major key stronghold of the Democratic Party and has been home to many influential politicians, including the current President of the United States, Barack Obama. Who has gained worldwide importance due the successful representation of blacks at a very high scale. Globally recognized Chicago has numerous nicknames, which reflect the impressions and opinions about historical and contemporary Chicago. The best known include: “Chi-town,” “Windy City,” “Second City,” and the “City of Big Shoulders. Chicago has also been called “the most American of big cities.”

Miss Universe’s my favorite Telecast. It’s really exciting. I always want my favorite “Miss” to win. When they win, I am really happy. But when my favorite lose…Every year, I have a favorite delegate. Last year was Miss Japan, Kurara Chibana. From my point of view, I think that Miss Japan 2006 is a perfect beauty… In 1978 was my countrywoman: In my opinion, I think that Miss Peru, Olga Roxana Zumaran Burga, has one of the best bodies in the Miss Universe History…she was a big favorite in Acapulco, Mexico… I think that Olga was eliminated this contest because she did not speak English…In this year I was a children…I was a fan of Miss Peru…

In 1985, my favorite was Miss Zaire, currently the Democratic Republic of Congo…. Miss Zaire ,Kayonga “Benita” Mureka Tete…Miss Africa and great favorite in Miss World 1985… …her exotic beauty was very special. Some people think that I am passionate about Miss Universe…It’s true…My mother is guilty of that. She has a great admiration for Gladys Zender, Miss Universe 1957.

I remember that my country was elected host the Miss Universe on January 1982. For me, was a surprised to read in the newspapers that Lima, Peru’s capital, hosted the Miss Universe. I felt very happy…My country made a great contest…were times against the terrorism by Shining Path… One of my favorites was Miss Brazil.. spectacular Cecyle Pinto Marques da Sylva (1,80m-18 years old and brown eyes) was born in Belem do Para, Amazonas (Amazonian jungle. She studied medicine. Glamorous Miss Amazonas said that her idol is the Supreme Pontieff John Paul II.

For the fourth time, Mexico will host the 56th the Miss Universe Pageant. The final will be at the National Auditorium in Mexico City, on May 28th.Mexico is one of the most wonderful places on Earth…There are very nice beaches: Cancun, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, La Paz, Puerto Escondido, and Acapulco. For example, Cozumel Island is a tropical paradise…The Mexican Jungle is the real fascination…paradisiac landscapes. Furthermore, Mexico has one of the oldest histories in the world. 1952: Long Beach, California. Miss Finland was the first Miss Universe…

1955: Long Beach, California. Miss Sweden was crowned Miss Universe. Miss El Salvador, Maribel Arrietta, was the big favorite. Miss El Salvador was compared to Marilyn Monroe by American journalists.

1957: Long Beach (California). Miss Peru, Gladys Zender Urbina was elected Miss Universe. She is the first Latin woman to win the Miss Universe.

1959: Long Beach, California. Miss Italy, Maria Grazia Buccella, was the big favourite, but she did not make the semifinals. Next day, Italian newspapers criticized Akiko Kojima…New Miss Universe from Japan….

1961: Long Beach, California. Marlene Schmidt became the first German woman to win the Miss Universe title.

1962: Miss Haiti, Evelyn Miot, was the first black woman to be a semifinalist at Miss Universe…

1964: Long Beach, California. Corina Tsopie was the first person from Greece to win the Pageant.

1968: Miami Beach, Florida.Martha Vasconcelos became the second Brazilian to win the Miss Universe title.

1969: Miami Beach, Florida. Miss Philippines, Gloria Diaz, became the third Miss universe from the Asia.

1975: San Salvador (El Salvador).The winner was Anne Pohtamo, Miss Finland. She looks like Grace Kelly, who was an American actress and Princess of Monaco (a small country in Europe).During her reign, she went to the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Dominican Republic and other countries in the Third World…She was crowned in El Salvador, the birthplace of Maribel Arrieta, one of the most beautiful delegates in the chronology of MU…. Jackeline Gammarra, Miss Bolivia, was big favorite in San Salvador. Ironically, she had been eliminated in the semifinals of Miss Universe. She is one of the best South American delegates in the history of Miss Universe…

1978: Acapulco, Mexico. Miss South Africa won the title. The favorites were : 1-El Salvador, 2-Peru, 3-USA, 4-SAfrica, 5-Israel, 6-Sweden, 7-Wales, 8-Costa Rica. Miss Costa Rica, Maribel Fernandez (actress in the 1980s and 1990s), was eliminated. The great surprise was Miss Chile… very intelligent (she spoke English, French and German)… Miss Peru, Olga Roxana Zumaran Burga, has been the only Peruvian favorite in the Miss Universe History…but she did not speak English as Miss Colombia and Miss Spain. Another eliminated was Miss El Salvador, Iris Yvette Mazorra, one of the best Latin American delegates in MU.

1979: Perth (Australia). Miss Brazil was a big favorite until last minute, but she had poor speech in the finals. Miss Venezuela, Maritza Sayalero won the title.

1981: New York City. Under the leadership of Osmel Sousa, President of Miss Venezuela Organization, Venezuela’s Irene Saez was crowned Miss Universe. The final ranking:1-Venezuela, 2-Canada, 3-Sweden, 4-Brazil, 5-Belgium. After the Miss Universe, Miss Brazil, Adriana Alves de Oliveira had worked as professional model in Paris…In 1984 she was London, the United Kingdom, where she was the first favorite by international journalism and houses of best. With at 1.81m, she had a perfect body and European profile…But she only came between 7 semifinalists. She is the best delegate from Brazil since Magdalena Sbairini, other big favorite in Miss World 1977…

1982: Lima ,Peru. The favorites were: 1-Miss Chile, 2-Miss South Africa, 3-Miss Brazil, 4-Miss Finland 5-Miss Canada 6-Miss Austria 7-Greece 8-Miss Wales 9-Miss Italy 10-Miss Australia…Weren’t favorites: Guam, USA, Uruguay, Germany, Peru, Venezuela, England and Miss Sweden. Miss South Africa, Odett Octavia Scrooby, (18 years old, 173m, blue eyes and 54 k) was born in Skeerpoort. She had been a professional model in Johannesburg, a city in SA. Her hobbies are drawing and painting. Her dream was to become an international supermodel. She did not win because her country was the birthplace of Apartheid…However, Miss Canada won the title. Karen Baldwin was a student at university in Canada.Her dream was to become a businesswoman. Her hobbies were water sports and playing tennis, squash and racquetball. Like Gladys Zender, one of the judges, Karen was a sportswoman. “My idol is the Mother Theresa of Calcutta”, said in an interview with Mario Vargas Llosa (judge).In the International judge, Karen had had the support of Rod Duguay, her countrymen and a famous hockey player…

1984: Miami, Florida. Miss South Africa, Leticia Snyman, was a big favorite, but she did not win Miss Universe. After 1984,Miss Universe company did not accept South Africa contestants until 1995,when Namibia was host the Miss Universe.

1985: Miami, Florida. The final ranking: 1-PR,2-Spain,3-Zaire,4-Venezuela,5-Uruguay. Miss Zaire, Benita Mureka, was the first black African finalist in Miss Universe. Miss Zaire has her own style, very beautiful. Miss Puerto Rico, a girl very common, was elected Miss Universe…very strange result.

1986: Panama City. Miss Venezuela, Barbara Palacios Teyde. Venezuela has had many judges in the Miss Universe since 1984: Certainly, Carolina Herrera (1984 and 1997), Irene Saez (1983 and 1995), Maria Consuelo Alonso (1993 and 1998), Lupita Ferrer (1986), Barbara Palacios Teyde (1988) and Jose Luis Rodriguez (1991. Different from Venezuela, Jamaica has not had an judge in MU history…as Bolivia, Paraguay, Portugal, Austria, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Namibia, Curacao, Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Ireland…

1987: Singapore City. Miss Chile, Cecilia Bolocco was crowned Miss Universe Pageant. She had a sensational interview with judges. Miss Colombia, Patricia Lopez, did not qualify for the semifinals. After of won Miss South America-Universe and Miss Photogenic, Patricia Lopez became the big favorite to win the Miss Universe, but she did not speak English very well. Good bye Colombia…

1989: Cancun, Mexico. Andrea Stelzer was Miss South Africa 1985 but when she arrived at Miami Airport Immigration did not accept her entrance to Miami. Reasons: Radical protests by American Anti-Apartheid activists. After…like many South African, she became German citizen. In 1989 she won the Miss Germany title. She went to Cancun and was semifinalist at the Miss Universe…

1990: Venezuela was the dominant force in Miss Universe Pageant in the 1990s.

1994: Manila, Philippines. The ranking final: 1-Miss India, 2-Miss Colombia, 3-Miss Venezuela. Many people think that Colombia never winner Miss Universe… because the narcotrafic. Colombia have had spectacular girls like Aura Maria Mojica and Paloma Turbay Ayala…

1996: Las Vegas, Nevada. Miss Venezuela, Alicia Machado, won the Miss Universe Pageant. She is always controversial and charismatic…

1999: Trinidad Tobago. Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe, became Miss Universe. Since 1999, she is an Anti-AIDS activist in the Third World.

2000: Nicosia, Cyprus, the birthplace of Aphrodite…Miss India, Lara Dutta was crowned Miss Universe. Miss France, Sonia Rolland, who speaks French, English and Spanish, was another bi-racial beauty. She has a Rwandan mother and a French father. Sonia was a child who lived at the time of the Rwandan War.

2006: Los Angeles, California. Miss Puerto Rico, Zuleyka Rivera, was crowned Miss Universe Pageant… Did you know that… Puerto Rico has had several judges in the Miss Universe History: Mapy Cortes (actress/1972), Marisol Malaret (former MU: 1977 and 2002),Deborah Carthy-Deu (ex-MU: 1987 and 2003), Dayanara Torres (2001),Marc Anthony (2001)and Maria Celeste Arraras (journalist/2003 and 2006)…but Chile only has had two judges: Cecilia Bolocco (1996) and Christian de la Fuente (20001)….

Homewood Alabama a City Rich in American Tradition

Homewood, Alabama is a city that has rich American traditional and cultural values, but has a welcomed stance for other cultures as well. In fact, 22% of the city’s population has German or Irish heritage.

Homewood is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama and is located on the other side of the Red Mountain range from Birmingham.

According to the most recent census, Homewood has the highest population densities in the state, which definitely says something about the city. It is a city with employment opportunities, a good per capita income, excellent schools, a library that received government funding higher than the national average, natural reserves, parks and much, much more.

The city of Homewood was initially known as Edgewood, however Edgewood is now a business area in the city. For a new visitor, it’s not very obvious that Edgewood houses most businesses in the city, because of its convenient and open office buildings, nearby parks, eateries and tree lined streets.

One of the most surprising facts about the city is its low crime rate (4.4 per 1000 people). In a city with such a high population, it is a blessing to have such a low crime rate. Part of the success can be attributed to Homewood’s active citizen and neighborhood patrolling systems, which has resulted in maintaining a virtually crime free society.

Homewood has six schools and a local university, where residents are encouraged to join continuing education programs. Virginia College is a proprietary college in Homewood, which offers classes related to specific professions such as information technology, health and medical, office management, business and criminal justice. Certificates, diplomas as well as degrees can be obtained from Virginia College.

The Homewood High School Patriotic Marching Band is a proud member of the Marching Band Hall of Fame and has participated seven times in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, more than any other band outside New York.

Homewood is also home to Charles Ghigna, who is a famous children’s book author and renowned author Anne George uses Homewood as the setting for her fictional series called “Southern Sisters Mysteries.”

The major community festival is the “We Love Homewood” day, where the entire community gets together for a day full of food, music and lots of fun!

It is a perfect place for middle income families to build their hopes, dreams and lives together. It doesn’t get much better than Homewood
