The Colorado Ranger Is The Original Rocky Mountain High Horse

Category : Region IV

The Colorado Ranger Is The Original Rocky Mountain High Horse

The Colorado Ranger Horse was named for its Colorado High Plains origin. Verbal references to those “range bred” horses eventually led to their being more commonly known as Rangerbreds or Rangerbred Horses. But despite its appearance, the Rangerbred is not a type of Appaloosa even though many Rangerbreds are double-registered with the Appaloosa Horse Clubs of both the United States and Canada. It has its own unique heritage.

Colorado Ranger Horses were bred for being cow savvy, and can anticipate the movements of cattle, and for their performance capabilities. They excel in ranch work with great stamina and do well in endurance competitions.

Colorado Ranger Horses are refined horses due to their Arabian/Barb ancestry and are compact animals, with powerful hindquarters. Like most popular breeds, Rangerbred sizes range from 14.2 to 16+ hands with the average height at 15.2 hands, and they have good dispositions.

Although the breed as we know it today is considered to have originated in America, its roots can be traced back to Constantinople, Turkey.

During 1878, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey as part of a world tour. The Sultan, in showing his regard for the General, gave him the gift of two desert stallions; a blue-gray Barb named Linden Tree and a gray Siglavy-Gidran Arab named Leopard. These horses are listed in the studbooks of both the Jockey Club and the Arabian Horse Club and their influence has touched almost every breed of horse in the United States.

These two horses went to Virginia at first, where they were used as foundation sires in a new breed of light-harness horse called the Americo Arab. But when the automobile was invented, along with other difficulties, the breeding project was discontinued in 1906 and his herd was disbanded.

So, Leopard and Linden Tree spent a season in Nebraska and sired a few foals, some spotted or colored, from the native mares of the General Colby Ranch. A.C. Whipple, of Kit Carson County in Colorado, obtained a herd of broodmares from the Colby Ranch who were all sired by either Linden Tree or Leopard. In addition, a black-eared white stallion named Tony was used as the herd stallion, because he was double bred to Leopard and was part of the family’s extensive line-breeding program using Tony and his sons.

In the early 20th Century, Mike Ruby, of the Lazy J Bar Ranch, bought one of Tony’s sons, a stallion named Patches and Max, son of Waldron Leopard. He used these stallions as the foundation sires of the new breed, in which unusual coloring was seen more and more frequently in his herd of more than 300 mares.

So, in essence, the Colorado Ranger was developed by Mike Ruby, who kept meticulous records on every foal that he bred. These records included foaling dates, coat patterns and complete pedigrees and are still in existence today with all horses still being recorded by hand in these ledgers, as well as by more modern methods in the Colorado Ranger breed registry.

After two leopard-patterned stallions were displayed at the Denver Stock Show, they created such a sensation that Mike Ruby was urged by the faculty of what is now Colorado State University to name this new breed of horse. And so the Colorado Ranger Horse was officially named in 1934 to reflect that they originated in Colorado and were bred and raised under range conditions.

And with the naming of the breed came the breed registry. The Colorado Ranger Horse Association (CRHA) is an older registry than the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC). In fact, it is the oldest of the western horse breed registries still in existence in the United States. It was founded in 1935 by Mike Ruby, who was its first president until his death in 1942. Its corporate charter was granted in 1938. Ironically, its home office is currently in Pennsylvania.

In the beginning, registration was limited only to the first 50 CRHA members, so a lot of true Rangerbreds were not allowed to be registered with CRHA. However, those horses with the appropriate color patterns were gladly accepted by the Appaloosa Horse Club which was another breed registry that was founded several months later. In 1964, the CRHA lifted the fifty member limit and registration was opened to all horses meeting the pedigree requirements, regardless of the owner’s membership status. This enabled the CRHA to register many of the Appaloosas that had Rangerbred heritage that were “lost” to the organization for so many years.

About 90% of all registered Rangerbreds are also registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club, but not all Appaloosas are eligible for registration with the CRHA, unless they have the required pedigree that shows a direct descent from one of the two foundation stallions, Max #2 and/or Patches #1 in an unbroken line. Patches #1 was purchased from the Whipple Ranch and traces to both Leopard and Linden Tree. Max #2 came from the Governor Oliver Shoup ranch at Colorado Springs and is descended from Waldron Leopard.

While many Colorado ranger horses display the same color patterns as the appaloosa, the CRHA is a bloodline registry, not a color registry. In fact, color and markings are not considered in eligibility for registration, only ancestry is. The breed’s founder wisely decided that a horse’s ability has nothing to do with color of his coat.

As with the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC), the CRHA recognizes the same approved outcrosses as the ApHC. The following breeds are considered as acceptable outcrosses for the Rangerbred and may be used in a CRHA Breeding Program: The American Jockey Club (TB), The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA)., ApHC of USA, Canada & Foreign, The Arabian Horse Club (AHC), ARA-APP, and the International Colored Appaloosa Association (ICAA) (with certain reservations). The outcrossed mare must be registered with one of the above registries. Paints & pintos are not among these approved outcrosses.

Research indicates that one out of every eight Appaloosas is of Rangerbred heritage and also eligible for CRHA registration.

OU Club of Colorado – OU vs Baylor Newsletter

Category : Region IV

OU Club of Colorado – OU vs Baylor Newsletter

Poor Aggies! ..oh wait we have a big game this week first

We had a nice quality showing of fan support last week at Stoney’s for the Texas Tech watch party. It wasn’t the biggest game on the Sooners remaining schedule, as the team is not heading into a big two game road gauntlet in the drive for an unprecedented 7th Big 12 Championship, so it was nice to see everyone show up!
This week we have the Baylor Baptist Bears down in Waco, TX. Game Time is 6:00 pm Mountain Time. Led by their quarterback Robert Griffin the Third, Baylor has a quality team. It’s not your daddy’s Bears.heck, it’s not even YOUR Baylor Bears. Baylor was leading the Big 12 south this year for a brief happy moment in the sun. However, they have dropped two in a row, first to Oklahoma State, and last week at home against Texas A&M. The Bears are currently 7-4.
We all know of OU’s struggles on the road over the last couple of years, but the Sooners have never, lost to the Baylor Bears EVER in football. This is a collision of trends.which one continues? Hopefully it will be the Sooners going 20-0 against Baylor and setting up a huge Bedlam Game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys next week!
So come on out to Stoney’s Bar and Grill for Sooner Magic Shot Specials, Big Shiner Beers, and Fresh Fried Okra. Also they are working on a special Thanksgiving Slider I hope will be available, it’s basically Thanksgiving Dinner..on a bun. It’s amazing!
If you are in Colorado Springs, don’t forget to join our sister group, the OU Club of Southern Colorado at Buffalo Wild Wings North in the Springs. They have had a great turn out every week, and growing stronger each week. They are also VERY kid and family friendly as there are video games there for the kids to play when they get bored watching football. (a Sooner Fan’s kid getting bored watching football????)

Scholarships:
Like we mentioned last week, we are now in Scholarship Season. (Doesn’t that sound important!) We are trying to figure out a better way to reach the prospective students. We can get a list from the University of Oklahoma, for students that have applied to OU and have been accepted. We can do the search for Colorado, the front-range, or however we want. The new enrollment applications now include a scholarship app, so the students don’t have to fill out a hundred individual apps for all the different scholarships out there.
This will be a great boon to us in knowing all the students out there, but it might be too much information. At first they will just be names and lists on paper. Not exactly a personal connection. We are trying to figure out a good way to narrow the list down in a personal way, that won’t require a lot of work from the Club officers (like writing or emailing all the students on the list)
First though, we want to reach out to students that are attached to the OU Club of Colorado, so if you know any High School Students that will be attending OU from Colorado (or Wyoming) have them drop a little note to us at: ouclubofco@gmail.com

Jason Boland and the Stragglers Concert & Bedlam Week Mixer (updated)
One of the favorite bands/music we play at the watch parties is Jason Boland and the Stragglers. You know them from “If I Ever Get Back to Oklahoma” “Pearl Snap Shirts”, “Outlaw Band (from Oklahoma)”and “Bourbon Legend” songs we play. They are from Oklahoma and will be at the Grizzly Rose, Wednesday November 24th, the night before Thanksgiving. Tickets are in advance, or at the door.
We’ll be joining several fans from the Colorado Cowboys (the Okla. St. Denver Alumni Club) for a Bedlam week Networking and Mixer night out. They were nice enough to invite us along for this little piece of Oklahoma coming here to Denver! Dress in your team colors and mingle with your little brothers and sisters and see a great concert by one of the best bands from Oklahoma the night before Thanksgiving and only a few days before the big OU/OSU Bedlam shoot out football game!
Update: We had a couple of questions come up since we posted this last week: No we don’t have the entire bar to ourselves and this is NOT a private concert. We don’t get a cut of the door or cover, and this not a fund-raising event. We don’t have a specific area reserved for seating.
I hope we can do more events with the Colorado Cowboys in the future. We have a lot of things in common, and we all have roots back home in Oklahoma. We have far more ties that bind, than divide.

Mile High Bowl Association Holiday Party (updated)
The Mile High Bowl Association’s annual Holiday Party is December 4th at 6 pm to Midnight. It will be at Blake Street Tavern this year located at 2301 Blake Street in Denver. This is the same night as the Big 12 Championship game. You can get a ticket for only a person at their website: click on the PDF for the application. The OU Club of Colorado will be a sponsor again this year, and we’ll have a few tickets to give away at upcoming watch parties. Fill free to join them for this fun event.
Update: This week we expect to have a representative from the Mile High Bowl at the Baylor Watch Party handing out fliers and answering your questions about this event.

Up Coming Watch Parties:

# 16 Oklahoma Sooners AT Baylor bears Watch Party

We might have a few Baylor fans joining us for this watch party and as always, please be the gracious hosts you have been all year, and show them some nice Oklahoma hospitality.
Parking Heads up: there is a big Snowboarding event at the Arts Institute, which is only a block north of Stoney’s on Lincoln, this Saturday. It’s set for 11am to 4 pm, so there may be some left over folks in the area from this event.

Oklahoma Sooners AT Oklahoma State Cowboys Bedlam Game Watch PartyGame Time is set. This is looking like it’s for a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Arlington, TX. The Choke Pokes think this is finally their year (what’s new), and they have the Sooners in “lovely” Stillwater this year to boot. So far the Cowboys are looking like the real deal with several offensive weapons. Can OU beat OSU on the road? This game is going to be one of the biggest Bedlam games in several years!

Saturday, December 4th, 2010 6:00 pm Mountain
Oklahoma Sooners VS Nebraska Cornhuskers – Big XII Championship Game Watch Party
Yeah, this is a bit premature, but I just wanted you know when it was, like maybe you were living under a rock or something. If OU wins out we’ll get to play Nebraska at the end of the season for a BCS Bowl trip on the line, just like it should be, as we say good bye to an old friend. We will invoke the ghosts of Billy Sims and Keith Jackson and days of Sooner Magic from the past in the last game of this big rivalry. It seems like we should bring oranges to throw on the field, like the old days.

Green Is Gold At Colorado State University

Ever since its inception in 1870, Colorado State University has used green and gold as their two main colors. But within the last few years one color has become much more predominant on campus. GREEN!

According to Newsweek magazine, Colorado State University is one of the greenest universities in America. They have instituted a full-on campaign towards going green that incorporates from students, faculty and staff.

When it comes to going green, Colorado State is about more than just changing light bulbs and encouraging public transportation.

CSU offers over 100 environmentally based courses covering everything from engineering to atmospheric science. They believe that teaching environmental awareness is the most resourceful method of going green.

CSU grows more than 2 million seedling trees each year in a Forest Service operation that is unmatched by any university in the country.

CSU employs a pedestrian friendly campus by moving parking towards the edges of campus to encourage walking and bicycling.

CSU utilizes electric, hybrid electric, and biodiesel vehicles throughout its campus.

CSU recycles nearly 2 million pounds of recyclable material each year.

CSU allows its on-campus residents to purchase “green” power. This endeavor has prevented more than 760,000 pounds of CO2 from entering the earth’s atmosphere each year. That amount is equivalent to eliminating CO2 emissions associated with the use of nearly 40,000 gallons of gasoline annually.

CSU operates a state-of-the-art water conservation program that has decreased water usage by 22% over the last 18 years despite a student population increase of 25%.

In the near future, Colorado State University is going to develop a huge wind farm on a 11,000 acre property that the university owns about 25 miles north of its campus. The power generated could produce an additional million in revenue for the University over the twenty-five year life of the project.

Colorado State University is certainly doing their part to change our world. If there was an olympics for organizations making our world more green, CSU could certainly earn GOLD!

OU Club of Colorado – OU vs Oklahoma State Newsletter

It’s Bedlam Week, and time to hate on Little Brother
# 14 Oklahoma travels to Stillwater, OK to take on the #10 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, aka the Choke Pokes. OSU has the #2 offense in the country heading into this one lead my talent everywhere that they get into their plays. Of course they think this is their year. You would think with 80-15-7 & 7 in a row for the Sooners, they would learn, that this isn’t their year.
This is one of the biggest Bedlam football games in years! The winner of this game will be the winner of the Big 12 South and head to Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, TX for the Big 12 Championship Game, where a BCS bowl trip is on the line. Come join us at Stoney’s this Saturday at 6:00 pm Mountain Time, for this rivalry game which features 2 teams in the top 15. If you have family or friends in town please invite them along, they are always welcomed, even if they like the wrong school. (or you can drop them off at the Fainting Goat, which is 2 blocks away on Broadway and home of the Colorado Cowboys)
Because it’s Bedlam Week: Did you hear that the Oklahoma State library had to close down this year? Somebody stole the book. That’s not all… when it was returned it was all colored in.

So come on out to Stoney’s Bar and Grill for Sooner Magic Shot Specials, Big Shiner Beers, and Fresh Fried Okra and chicken fried steak sliders.

If you are in Colorado Springs, don’t forget to join our sister group, the OU Club of Southern Colorado at Buffalo Wild Wings North in the Springs. They have had a great turn out every week, and growing stronger each week. They are also VERY kid and family friendly.

Pictured: Austin Box looks like he will be healthy and has practiced this week after getting hit hard and leaving the Baylor game and he’s ready to anchor the center of the OU defense this Saturday for the Sooners.

Future Watch Parties and Events:
We have gotten several inquires about what happens to the OU Club of Colorado once Football season ends. Well, one thing that many won’t see, is we are actively helping the University of Oklahoma out in recruiting high school kids from the area to attend OU as well as working on recognizing and selecting deserving students for scholarships.

But that’s not really what people want to know. They want to know if we’ll be getting together on a regular basis, or even just every once in awhile. The simple answer to that right now is YES of course. The more difficult answer is to the follow up question, “Oh, yeah, like what?”

Last year we had 3 basketball watch parties, and they weren’t exactly a huge success. We might do some this year, but our Men’s team stinks on ice, errr.is going through a rebuilding phase. The Women’s team looks to be one of the tops in the country yet again, but many of their games are on Sundays. I think we’ll do a few basketball watch parties, for like OSU or Texas games. Hey it’s still OU sports and a reason to get out and meet up with your fellow Sooners.

The good news is we will be doing more special events this next year. With a new social chairperson to plan and coordinate, we will do at least a couple things this next year and hopefully more. We won’t be going completely black for 8 months! We are thinking of events like a Wine Tasting night (even have a person wanting to give us a private label of wine), or a day outing to a museum or to the zoo, or a day of casual sports in the park. Of course we’ll let you all know when we have those!

If you have an interest, and want us to do something, or have a suggestion, feel free to let us know. If you are the Mumbly-pegs champion of the Rockies and think a “Beginning day of Mumbly-peg” would be fun for a group let us know! If you want to lead something please let us know as well. If you run something like a fly fishing guide, or a rafting guide, or a kid’s art shop for example and think it’s something the OU Club of Colorado could do as an event, we want do know that! Contact our Social Chairperson: Kristin Bieberly at mailto: kristin.bieberly@ef.com if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Mile High Bowl Association Holiday Party

The Mile High Bowl Association’s annual Holiday Party is December 4th at 6 pm to Midnight. It will be at Blake Street Tavern this year located at 2301 Blake Street in Denver. This is the same night as the Big 12 Championship game, which they will have on. You can get a ticket for only a person at their website: click on the PDF for the application. The OU Club of Colorado will be a sponsor again this year, and we’ll have a few tickets to give away at upcoming watch parties. Fill free to join them for this fun event.

Up Coming Watch Parties:

Saturday, November 27th, 2010 6:00 pm Mountain
#14 Oklahoma Sooners AT #10 Oklahoma State Cowboys Bedlam Game Watch Party
This is for a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Arlington, TX. ESPN College Game Day will be in Stillwater for this big game. This will mark the 25th time ESPN GameDay has been on hand for an OU game. Only Florida (32) and Ohio State (28) have been part of a GameDay site more times than the Sooners.
Saturday, December 4th, 2010 6:00 pm Mountain
University of Oklahoma VS Nebraska Cornhuskers – Big XII Championship Game Watch Party
We WILL BE HERE! I just wanted you know when it was, like maybe you were living under a rock or something. If OU wins out we’ll get to play Nebraska (assuming they beat Colorado this week) with a BCS Bowl trip on the line, just like it should be, as we say good bye to an old friend. We will invoke the ghosts of Billy Sims and Keith Jackson and days of Sooner Magic from the past in the last game of this big rivalry. It seems like we should bring oranges to throw on the field, like the old days.

Personally, I’ll hate to see those guys go. I always thought this was one of the best and unique rivalries in all of sports. It wasn’t hate like OU-Texas, it’s not intra-state rivalry that most schools had.this was one built on mutual respect. To be the best you have to beat the best, and for many, many moons, that meant for these 2 schools beating the other. And when it was all over, unlike many rivalries, we could be proud of the other guy. We knew they made us better and vice-versa.

A rivalry based on mutual respect.something I fear we’ll never see again.

BOWL GAME WATCH PARTY Oklahoma Sooners vs UCONN
OU will be going to a Bowl Game this year, unlike a certain football team in Austin, TX who barring a miracle will be sitting at home this holiday season. Where will OU end up? That’s anyone’s guess, as there too many key football games this weekend. If OU wins their next 2 games, they will be heading to the Fiesta Bowl on January 1st, as Big 12 Champions and most likely play the winner of the Big East which will be either Pitt or West Virginia.
Lose and they can end up at either the Alamo Bowl against Arizona, or more likely the Insight Copper Bowl against either Michigan or Penn St.
I wrote a full article on OU’s current bowl picture this week, and you can read it all here: Crimson and Cream Machine. Colorado will be pulling out all stops for whatever game we are in, with a silent auction with several really neat items and an all you can eat Taco Bar. If it’s New Year’s Day and the Fiesta Bowl, we will have Blacked Eyed Peas for your New Year’s Good Luck!

OU Club of Colorado connects Sooner fans, alumni and friends to the University of Oklahoma , through community service and fund raising. OU Club of Colorado hosts the largest watch parties in the nation outside of Norman and outside of Texas during the Red River Rivalry game.
