South Eastern Community College Offers Associate Degrees and Sports Scholarships

South Eastern Community College is located in North Carolina in United States serving around 24.8% of all Columbus Country residents, 21.6% of curriculum students from out-of County but only 1% from out of state. Recognition has been earned by the college basically for its associate degrees and sports scholarships.

Campus Features

A public community college located in Whiteville, North Carolina, the college was chartered on February 6 th 1964. With a campus spreading across 100 acres of urban land the college has a big physical campus. In addition it has a very strong web presence as it facilitates various distance learning modes offering online education facilities for students. Accessible educational, social and cultural opportunities that would help improve the lives of the students and use of multiple and alternate methods of instructional deliveries it provides for them continuing educational units, certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. College does not offer nay campus housing.

Programs Offered

Two years associate degree, and one year diplomas including the online degrees are offered by the college in multiple educational streams that includes fine arts, applied science, general education, and many more. A unique offer is the intercollegiate athletic program that allows students to participate in two games; the women’s fast pitched softball, and the men’s baseball. All the degrees are up to the associate degrees. However the college offers more program than most other colleges of its size. Common field of study in the college are the conservation, resource management, and construction trades. Offering associate degrees and certificates in over 62 different programs, the college has earned good reputation in the academic circles.

Admission

Admission to South Eastern Community College is open and all qualified applicants are admitted through the open admission process. Also the number of faculties per student is much more in comparison to many other colleges of similar sizes.

Michigan Buick Dealers Hear Buick Teams up with NCAA to Share Community Inspirations

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Buick dealers may be interested to know how Buick is giving back to the community. There are many stories about victories and champions told about teams and their games, but stories about what those team members did after they played may be left in the shadows. Buick along with NCAA, Turner Sports and CBS Sports have partnered to create a campaign to share these inspiring stories of former student-athletes with the community.

Together these organizations will create the Buick Human Highlight Reel, which will tell the true stories of the lessons, involvement, reach and connection that has been made by former student-athletes.

According to the NCAA, some of the stories and former student-athletes that will be featured include:

• Dr. Gabe Lewullis, who scored the winning shot for Princeton University against defending champion UCLA in 1996. Lewullis is a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon and spokesperson for Our Future Stars, a non-profit organization that works to get corporate funding for high school sports programs at risk of being shut down due to budget cuts.

• Cullen Jones, who swam for North Carolina State University and became the second African-American in history to win an Olympic Gold medal in the sport. Jones works with the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash program to teach minority children how to swim.

• Dr. Denton Cooley, who played basketball at the University of Texas – Austin, and is a pioneer in open-heart surgery. Cooley played in the first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1939 and went on to perform the first successful heart transplant in the United States in 1968 and implanted the first totally artificial heart in a human in 1969.

The Buick Human Highlight Reel is planned to launch at the start of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Other ways Buick will be reaching out with this new campaign include an archive of the complete stories available at www.ncaa.com/buick,which will include videos from filmmakers associated with a creative social network called Zooppa; a 30-minute television show with some Human Highlight Reel stories will air before the 2011 NCAA Men’s Final Four semifinal games on April 2; and, finally, a few selected video profiles will air during preliminary-round tournament coverage on truTV.

Buick recently announced the Buick Achiever Scholarship Program, as some Michigan Buick dealers may know, and this new partnership will be another way for Buick to help guide the next generation of leaders by inspiring with stories of community involvement.

“The Buick Human Highlight Reel shows the continued leadership and dedication that student-athletes have once they complete their academic programs and become active in their communities or involved with broad initiatives that have a positive influence on the lives of others,” said Peter Davis, NCAA director of championships and alliances in a NCAA press release.

The Buick Highlight Reel will also include a section on its website called “Tell Us Your Story”, where fans may share their stories about how NCAA former student-athletes may have helped them or affected them in some way.

Is Community Lifestyle in the Carolinas your Best Place?

I’m often asked which cities and towns in North Carolina and South Carolina are more affordable than others, and if North Carolina is more affordable than South Carolina, and vice versa.

First of all, look for communities that are less like a “resort” and more like a “community”. Remember, all those amenities cost money and someone has to pay for them making them less affordable in the long run.

Many communities in North Carolina and South Carolina have golf memberships, tennis memberships, social memberships, and even equestrian memberships. There are fees associated with all of them, and you don’t want to find out how much they are, after you settle into what you thought was your Best Place.

There can be fees for using the health club, pool, boat docks, and community room for social events. Recently, I was researching several communities in

North Carolina and I came across a golf community that had an initiation fee of 0,000! Plus yearly dues of ,000, and a dining minimum of 00 per year. I don’t know about you, but that’s one heck of a chunk of change

It doesn’t make much sense to choose a golf community, if you then can’t afford the membership and fees associated with it. Most communities have either a

Property Owners Association or a Homeowners Association, and each have fees associated with them.  If you own a townhouse or condominium, the fees are usually higher.

Many retirees today are seeking out retirement communities in North Carolina and South Carolina based on a choice of lifestyle and their interests, and they need to find out before hand if the fees associated with those activities will make it impossible to pursue them.

One way to find an affordable lifestyle in North Carolina and South Carolina is to look at some of the many small charming towns. They’re a good bet whether you’re retiring or relocating to the Carolinas.

I like to find small towns with active communities, just outside the larger metropolitan areas, or small towns within close proximity to other small towns,or small towns with colleges in them. These situations give you the advantage of small town living, but with big town services.

When I say small towns, I’m talking about towns of approximately 10-30,000 people.  Towns like Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and Boone in North Carolina are great examples of living in a “cluster” of smaller towns that have a lot to offer.

The western part of North Carolina also has some of the best places to live in the Carolina’s, like Cashiers, Fontana Village, Bryson City and Waynesville.

For coastal living, one of my very favorites is New Bern. It’s one of the best places I’ve been to in North Carolina. It’s a quaint small town with a historic housing stock and beautiful open spaces. The Neuse and Trent Rivers come together in the middle of Town. It’s gorgeous!

Although it’s still considered a small town, you won’t lack for shopping, culture and great restaurants. The ocean is only 40 minutes away and the Pamlico

Sound is right next door. And the people are some of the nicest I’ve ever met!

In South Carolina, you’ll find beautiful, quaint, small town living in places like Anderson, Beaufort, Summerville, and Georgetown.

Today, there are an increasing number of people interested in living just outside small downtowns where they can walk to shopping, restaurants, and activities.  Especially with the price of gas! Small towns in North Carolina and South Carolina have become very popular for relocating empty-nesters, as well as boomer retirees.

There’s usually a greater sense of “community” in these smaller towns, and opportunities to get involved as a volunteer or civic leader. 

Other advantages includeless traffic, more affordable housing and usually lower taxes. You might also find some great old houses just waiting for you to restore them. 

Whether you’re relocating to the Carolina’s or looking for an active adult retirement community, there’s a small town that could be just right for you. 

But wait, I must also tell you of a possible downside. In these small towns, you won’t find as much diversity in the people and you might be considered an “outsider” at first, and you may find that all the cultural events and services you want may not be readily available. 

Either way, if you pick a small town in North Carolina or South Carolina that’s a short ride from one of its urban areas, you’ll be assured of a variety of services, good medical care and plenty of activities to keep you busy. 

There is also the added benefit if you find a community with a college or branch of a major university, where you can experience plently of intellectual stimulation and diversity.

All and all, if you use my “cluster” concept of relocating or retiring around other small towns, the drawbacks will be far outweighed by the slower pace, quality of lifestyle and lower cost of living.

Two of my favorite small Best Places in the Carolinas are Lenoir, North Carolina which was rencently voted a “Hot Bargain” in National Geographic Adventure Magazine, and Aiken, South Carolina, which is located in the middle of beautiful horse country just northeast of Augusta, GA.

Los Angeles Southwest College Is Comprehensive Community College

A community college located in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County in the State of California in United States , Los Angeles Southwest College is proximate to the city of Los Angeles . As a comprehensive community college it offers university transfer, technical as well as lifelong learning programs.

Brief History

Established in 1967, two years after Watts ‘s riots of 1965, the institution was set up catering to the complaints of officials and citizens. Basic objective was to provide educational facilities for the African Americans.

Campus

Campus of the college is located at the intersection of Western Avenue and Imperial Highway in South Los Angeles . It serves both African Americans and Latinos.

Programs Offered

Numerous programs for the transfer students throughout the country are offered by the college. Training is provided on workforce areas like occupations based on technology, electronics, music technology, theater production, and business. Associate degrees with majors on business administration, drafting, interdisciplinary studies, child development, sociology, nursing, speech communication, political science and multiple other disciplines are provided. Unique Features

Los Angeles Southwest College follows open admission policy . Neither diploma from high schools nor official transcripts are required. International students have to provide proof of finances for boarding and lodging as well as other expenses. They also require graduation from a high school or equivalent of one in United States with a score of 450 on TOEFL or score of 45 in the Internet version of the test.

Cincinnati Schools Establishes Programs That Unite Educators and the Community

Cincinnati Schools’ Parent Leadership Institute

This summer saw the creation of the Cincinnati Schools ‘ Parent Leadership Institute. The program reflects the changing role that parents play in public education. As Vanessa White, the Board President of the Parents for Public Schools (PPS) stated: “The days of bake sales are long gone. Today, parents need a new set of skills and knowledge if they are to realize their full potential to impact student achievement and drive school improvement.” Organizations such as PPS work to align the needs of Cincinnati schools with the resources of parents in order for both sides to work together for the benefit of children attending Cincinnati schools.

One of the models that the Cincinnati schools have been looking at is the Pritchard Committee of Lexington, Kentucky. The Pritchard Committee established the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership and trained over 1300 parents from a variety of backgrounds in the ways that they could be productive in assisting the public school system. Cincinnati schools have seen the success of the Lexington program and have worked diligently to see if such a program could have a similar positive effect on parental involvement in Cincinnati schools. Ms. White is eager to see how Cincinnati schools will benefit and expresses high hopes for the program: “Expectations have been raised for students and teachers, and it’s time for parents to step up to the plate as well. This program will greatly enhance our ability to identify and develop parent leaders who can then engage other parents to ensure that our schools provide a quality public education for all children.”

Other educational professionals in the Cincinnati schools have also welcomes the process and look to the success of the Lexington program to justify their enthusiasm. Superintendent Rosa Blackwell argues that “decades of research confirm that when parents are more involved, student achievement increases.” Cincinnati schools stand to benefit from those decades of research in creating a program that clearly aligns the activities of parents and teachers in order to make a Cincinnati public school environment that provides the most comprehensive program for students.

Cincinnati schools are relying on a number of local and national partners to implement the program. In addition to the Pritchard Committee, Cincinnati schools will be working with the United Way and Xavier University. These groups hope to create Community Learning Centers where parents can come for training. Cincinnati schools are grateful for the support from business and other community partners in order to fund these Community Learning Centers. Among the grant supporters are the KnowledegeWorks Foundation, the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Kroger Foundation. All of these groups will work in conjunction to make the program as effective as possible for Cincinnati school parents.

To start the program off, a pilot group will begin working under the direction of Zakia McKinney. Ms. McKinney has worked as an Education Director at the Urban League as well as an Executive Director of the Walnut Hills Churches. She has been active in community organizations for many years and looks forward to sharing her experience with Cincinnati schools. She is optimistic of the program’s potential for Cincinnati schools, stating that “The Parent Leadership Institute will play an important part by training parents as informed advocates and willing change agents equipped to engage other parents to work with the schools on solutions for change”

Located near West Memphis , Arkansas , Mid South Community College (MSCC) is a co- educational, public community college, established in 1993. Norman Oklahoma Community Guide

“Already the third largest city in the state, Norman continues to grow and expand. Part of the secret may be that Norman is ideally located within driving distance of Oklahoma City and even allows for weekend trips to Dallas, which is three hours away.

Of course, Norman is about more than just a great location. It is also home to a number of attractions, including the University of Oklahoma, the largest University in the state. The University boasts a 2 million-volume library which is accessible to the public, and which local residents can use. Residents of Norman can also visit the University’s two major museums and access the many programs and courses the school offers. If you love sports, you may enjoy catching a game — the University’s National Championship-winning football team and the men’s gymnastics teams are both big draws. The women’s basketball team at the University of Oklahoma is considered among the best in the country.

Norman’s historic downtown core also offers much to see and do. From gourmet grocery stores to small galleries, music venues, and independent stores, the downtown area offers much fun and recreation. Be sure to check out the beautiful architecture in the area as well as the many independent and funky businesses. Norman’s Performing Arts Studio is a great place for concerts and exhibitions. Sooner Theatre is another good option for live music and theatre. The historic downtown area also has many wonderful cafes, bars, and restaurants. When you live in Norman, you can easily dine out on a different delicious world cuisine every day of the week!

If you enjoy the arts, Norman has a number of galleries and facilities that may be of interest. Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art boasts a fine collection of French Impressionist art and an impressive collection of the Taos Society of Artists. The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History contains a number of celebrated exhibits. If you prefer music, there are many live music venues and the Summer Breeze Concert Series is a popular – and free – attraction in the summer. If you enjoy soaking in the arts outdoors, visit the bronze foundry known as The Crucible. Here, you will find a gallery as well as an impressive sculpture garden. The Firehouse Art Center is another great local resource, offering art classes.

If you are looking for recreational options, Norman has a number of green spaces and parks. Be sure to visit the George M. Sutton Wilderness Park, which boasts many trails and a few ponds. You may also want to visit the Little River Zoo which rescues abandoned exotic animals. If you are willing to drive a little bit outside of Norman, Lake Thunderbird offers mountain bike trails, boating facilities, campgrounds, and horseback riding trails. Also outside of Norman is The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge which boasts many hike trails as well as many animals native to the region. The Refuge is about a 90 minute drive outside of Norman, so it is easily accessible to the community’s residents.”
