The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is a well-known field for the Oklahoma Sooners. They now the town, they now the locker rooms, they know the tunnel that leads to the field. The Sooners offensive was simply brilliant and despite putting on a good fight in their first ever Fiesta Bowls, The Sooners where too much of a team for the Huskies that went home without the title. The Oklahoma Sooners where 5-0 in BCS Bowls before they made their trip to Arizona to face Connecticut, a team that at 8-5 for the season and coming from the Big East, had struggled to pull itself into the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. Taking a look back at what had happened during the previous trips to the BCS Bowls, Oklahoma couldn’t help to get that “here we go again feeling”. Let’s take a quick look at the numbers for a second. In 2009 the Oklahoma Sooners had the privilege to play for the BCS National Championship Bowl against the Florida. The Gator won by 24-14 in this exciting game. The year before that, the Sooners faced WVU in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. The West Virginia Mountaineers put on a baffling 48-28 upset against the Sooners. In 2007 the Sooners will again take a go at the Fiesta Bowl. For the first time in many years, the Sooners would take a chance to win the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State, but the Boise State Broncos proved to be a stronger team and defeated the Sooners in an intense 43-42 smack down. Before that it was the 2005 Orange Bowl. The Sooners were playing the USC Trojans and despite holding on a great season record, the No.1 ranked team in the nation, the Trojans, won the game 19-55. In 2004 the Oklahoma Sooners played the Sugar Bowls against LSU. Head Coach Nick Saban and the Tigers took an important 14-21 win over the Sooners. So yes, that was 0-5 for the Sooners in BCS Bowls and that was certainly hurting not only the fans but head coach Bob Stoops as he had been in front of the Sooners every one of those failing years. The Sooners remembered all these games before they played UConn on Saturday. And they made the Huskies pay. The Sooners quarterback, Landry Jones, finally emerged from under the shadow of Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and played out an extraordinary game. He went for a school-bowl record 429 yards completing 34 of 49 for three touchdowns and one interception. It’s got to feel good to finally live to its expectations. In 2007 and 2008 the Sooners arrived to Arizona as the favorite. They left a bit embarrassed and disappointed. This time around, the Sooners took the win back to Norman, Oklahoma where thousands of fans where waiting for them.

The Sooners flew relatively under the radar in the first part of the season until the BCS named them the top team in the country in the first BCS rankings of the season. If he’s able to do that, holes will open for Todman and the running game. Oklahoma. This game may be a little closer than a lot of people are expecting. Oklahoma has been here before and the experience is not an unfamiliar one for the Sooners. Connecticut, on the other hand, is venturing into unfamiliar territory and should be riding an emotional wave heading into the game.

The team is driven by running back Jordan Todman, second in the nation in rushing this season, who carried the ball 302 times for 1574 yards and 14 touchdowns. At 5’9 and 193 pounds, Todman is probably not going to plow over Oklahoma’s line, but he’s clearly a threat to open up the game for the Huskies.

We have heard all of the criticism with the 2011 Fiesta Bowl that would be expected when Connecticut, a team who lost to Temple (8-4 (5-3 MAC)), Louisville (6-6 (3-4 Big East)) and Rutgers (4-8 (1-6 Big East)), plays a team like Oklahoma. The Big East is too weak to have an automatic qualifier anymore. Connecticut isn’t even ranked. The Huskies aren’t even the best team in their conference. They lost to a MAC team for heaven’s sake, how can they expect to match up with a Big 12 Champion.

The September health care reform mandates will decrease the health care insurance alternatives available for kids. All over the country, many private medical insurance carriers appear to have decided not to insure youth who purchase standalone policies after September 22nd. Not all carriers have announced their decision on this issue, but many that have are choosing eliminate these types of policies.

Who’s the bad guy here? We can fault the insurance carriers. However, asking an insurance carrier to insure unhealthy people is like asking banks to underwrite loans for people with poor credit scores. Congress might more at fault than the insurance carriers.

Health care insurance carriers do make tons of money but their margins are miniscule. They don’t make tons of money on per policy. Adding just a few additional significantly unprofitable people can make them lose money or make their premiums unaffordable.

A unsophisticated example would involve an insurance carrier that insures one hundred people against cardiac problems. Each person pays a thousand and twenty dollars a year. One of the insured people has a heart attack annually. It costs the carrier 0,000. The company pays the health care bills . It earns ,000..

After a new law goes into effect, they have to insure five costly people. Every year one of these five new people has a myocardial infarction that costs an additional 0,000. This means that the insurance company doubled its outgoing money, but not its revenue.

If the insurance carrier responded by increasing the cost of the coverage, their policyholders might respond also. Some would terminate their policies. Chances are the healthier people would be much more likely to decide to end their policies. It is a sure thing that their prices would have to go up again and again as their ratio of healthy to unhealthy policyholders would keep moving in the wrong direction.

When an insurance company is mandated to insure people without regard to their medical history, they run the risk of closing their doors. This could sound ludicrous to you, but big companies go out of business from time to time.

Perhaps if the US car companies had been more financially responsible, they wouldn’t have needed our government to bail them out. Perhaps banks should have been more responsible a few years ago and not underwritten so many soon-to-be bad loans.

A legal mandate cannot change the laws of the marketplace. If an insurance company takes on unprofitable business it will have to raise its rates. If they are forced to raise their prices more than their competitors, they will wind up with fewer customers.

Our lawmakers wrote a law that was supposed to provide universal medical coverage to youth. This law has had the opposite effect. Fewer options for insurance are now available for children.

This has to make many voters wonder if the other, soon to be enacted health care reform mandates are going to work just as well. Our senators and congressmen spent a lot of time demonizing the insurance carriers. They are no more or less wicked than institutions in any other business sector. They spent a lot of time telling us how much money they make overall. The real issue is what they make per insured person.

We’ve gotten crafty rhetoric and at least one poorly thought out mandate. Let’s hope that this was the only one they got wrong. Say a prayer.

New Haven, Connecticut is not just Yale University. Stop at the Museum of the New Haven Colony Settlement. This museum gives a historical look at the city of New Haven. The city was originally laid out as nine squares, the center one being the green. The squares were then divided into parcels and given or sold to the settlers. The history of their ordeals is told in paintings, documents and other displays.

The second Amistad trial took pace in the State House, which was joyfully torn down after the new one was built in Hartford in the 1870s. The old jail, where the Africans were kept during their trials is also gone. What remains however is the green, where they had their daily exercise, doing cartwheels and back flips and generally having a good time. They were well loved by the community, who helped keep their stay as comfortable as possible, given the circumstances.

On the green today are three churches and the graves of thousands of early settlers. The citizens thought that their green, the public park, was beginning to look like a cemetery. So they moved the headstones to Grove Cemetery. But the bodies remain interred on the green.

Today the focal point of New Haven is Yale University. Named after Elihu Yale, the University consists of twelve self contained colleges, where the undergrads eat, sleep, recreate, and bond together. Something like Hogworts in the Harry Potter books the 5,000 plus students stay in their college for their length of their undergraduate stay at Yale. The Greek System of fraternities exists on campus, but plays a minor role in student life. One other aspect of student life is the secret societies, such as the “Skull and Bones”. These are good old boys’ networks, very exclusive and insular.

A tour of campus is highly recommended. It leaves twice daily from 149 Elm Street and lasts over an hour in length. The tour guides shows different parts of the campus, going into one of the colleges, to which entrance is available by only a single gate. Yale is full of many stories and traditions, which the guide shares on the tour. Not to be missed is the Sterling Library, a cathedral like structure. Yale, being nonsectarian, did not want a chapel. The architect, however, wanted to build a church like building. So he built a cathedral to knowledge. Gothic in style, the card catalogues resemble pews, the check out desk a high altar, and many windows give the effect of being in a cathedral. Behind the desk is a large mural depicting different areas of knowledge. The painter, being a Communist, put himself into the painting holding a hammer and sickle.

On the grounds is the submarine museum, with displays of submarines used since Bushnell invented the Turtle during the revolutionary war.
