International Relations Degree From an Australian University

International Relations Degree From an Australian University

If you are considering a career with the State Department and are planning to pursue an international relations degree, you might think about attending college in Australia. The Australian National University offers one of the most comprehensive courses of study in this field in addition to its other fine degree programs.

One of the advantages to attending an Australian college is the fact that they speak your language. The culture of Australia also shares many similarities with that in the U.S., while the differences are intriguing; both nations were founded prior to the 19th Century as colonies of the British Empire, and patterns of settlement were similar. In both countries, there were conflicts with indigenous peoples that had a major impact on how those societies developed. In Australia, college does not differ greatly from that which you are already familiar.

Among Australian colleges, ANU’s Department of International Relations is considered to have one of the leading such graduate degree programs in the world.  The program combines theory and practical applications with an emphasis on Asia and the Pacific Rim. This program is the only one of its kind in Australia, and scholars from all over the world come to ANU in order to study geo-political issues that are slowly transforming the planet. This graduate degree draws on a number of disciplines in the social sciences, including:

•    political science
•    sociology
•    history
•    anthropology
•    law
•    economics
•    philosophy

In order to qualify for this program, you will need to have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields and maintained a minimum academic standard.

Another key is preparation. If you are planning to complete an international relations degree at the Australian College of Asia and the Pacific at ANU, you will have to get started at least a year in advance. Applications can take time to process; in addition, you’ll need to make certain your passport is up-to-date, make travel arrangements as well as living arrangements while you are in attendance.

Degree programs through a college in Australia can be tremendously rewarding and allow you to earn the credentials you need while giving you a broader perspective in the field of international relations and diplomacy.

Gm Pulls Ads From Imus Show

General Motors Corp. joined other sponsors that are pulling ads from the “Imus in the Morning” program following last week’s controversial comments of the jock about African Americans as well as female college athletes.

GM said it will stop advertising during the Imus show. The show originated on the CBS-owned WFAN in New York and is syndicated nationwide. The program also is simulcast daily on the MSNBC cable television channel. GM in 2006 was the top advertising spender at MSNBC overall and during the Imus program, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

The automaker issued a statement that stated: “General Motors obviously does not condone the comments Don Imus recently made in reference to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. Mr. Imus has publicly apologized, and admitted his comments were ‘completely inappropriate and offensive.’ He has also stated his intention to make changes to his show. We acknowledge and welcome these actions. We have decided, however, to suspend our advertising while we continue to monitor the situation.”

In 2006, the largest automaker spent an estimated 2,000 purchasing commercial time during the MSNBC simulcast of the Imus program. The ads were not as simple and affordable as those of Volvo car parts for it does mean that they include a heftier sum. Overall, the automaker spent .95 million at MSNBC. The data was divulged by TNS. Other top sponsors of Imus include Sprint Nextel Corp., PetMed Express Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Spokesmen for the Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group said that those car companies do not advertise during the Imus show, but said that it is possible some of their dealers may independently buy spots in their local markets.

On April 4, Imus, along with producer and sidekick Bernard McGuirk, bantered about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team which had lost an NCAA Championship game the night before. He referred to the athletes with the slur “nappy-headed hos.”

The next day Imus issued a brief apology but retort to the derogatory dialogue on his show continued throughout the weekend. On Monday a visibly shaken Imus offered a longer on-air mea culpa, describing himself as a “good person” who “said a bad thing.” But the mea culpa failed to appease many critics. These critics pointed to comparable misogynistic and racist remarks Imus and his staff have made in the past.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, the NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, and others have called for the ouster of Imus, who nonetheless appeared on Sharpton’s Monday broadcast. Imus, up until now, continues to convey his remarks and apologies to the players and their families. The Rutgers basketball players and their coach held a press conference Tuesday and agreed to meet with the radio host.

“This young team fought through immeasurable odds to reach the highest pinnacle and play for the school’s first national championship in a major sport,” said C. Vivian Stringer, the coach of the team. “To serve as a joke of Mr. Imus in such an insensitive manner creates a wedge and makes light of the efforts of these classy individuals, both as women and as women of color.”

CBS and MSNBC have said they will punish Imus by suspending the program for two weeks starting April 16. Procter & Gamble, office-supply chain Staples Inc. and other sponsors already have pulled their commercials from the program. The decision was made notwithstanding Imus’ repeated apologies and promises of reform.

GM intimated it will carry on its support to Imus’ charitable efforts that cover work with sick and disabled children. Ryndee S. Carney, the GM spokeswoman, said the automaker has donated vehicles for use at The Imus Ranch, a nearly 4,000-acre cattle station in New Mexico. The ranch is used to offer kids with cancer and other diseases a ‘cowboy experience.’

Who Can Benefit From Buying Tramadol Online?

If you need to take Tramadol for a chronic pain condition or to recover from an injury or illness, an online pharmacy could be the best place to buy your medication. For many types of people, the only way they can afford Tramadol is to buy at an online pharmacy.

If you happen to have terrific prescription drug coverage, you may not care how much Tramadol costs. But if your drug plan limits coverage or you’re completely lacking a prescription plan, the cost of any medication is likely to be a big concern.

If you’re a senior, you’re probably all too aware of the high cost of prescription drugs. Depending on your prescription plan, you may still have to pay a percentage of the cost of medications that makes them very expense. It could be your insurance plan requires you meet a high deductible before coverage begins.

On top of paying for prescription insurance, many seniors also end up paying high prices for prescription drugs. On a fixed income, this can take up a big proportion of their monthly budgets. This is why many seniors buy cheap Tramadol online and save themselves a great deal of money they can devote to other essentials.

Students are another group of individuals who may find themselves unable to afford medication at a regular pharmacy. College students may be covered by their parents’ health insurance until they are 21, if they are very lucky. Many parents do not have affordable insurance their older children can use.

The cost of attending college is so expensive today, many students simply can’t afford the extra amount health insurance coverage adds up to. Like seniors, college students usually have very limited income, and their best recourse is to buy cheap Tramadol online to make their medications affordable.

Unemployed individuals represent another group of people who can benefit from buying medications like Tramadol at an online pharmacy. Unemployment income is usually a far cry from what unemployed workers are used to earning, and making ends meet can be a real challenge. If they are lucky enough to afford health insurance, saving whatever they can on insurance co-payments or costs due to coverage limitations is very important.

Seniors, students and the unemployed are three groups of people who can benefit from savings when they buy Tramadol online, but they’re not the only ones. Online pharmacies make Tramadol and pain management affordable for anyone interested in saving money.

Hello From Chicago – Part 4 – Chinatown And Second City

Chicago, Arlington House, Sunday October 23,2005, 6:30 am

After thoroughly exploring the Pullman Historic District, we decided to check out Chinatown, one of the many ethnic neighbourhoods that Chicago has to offer. The weather had turned from cool and grey with the occasional peek of sunshine to dark, rainy and cold, so rather than walking around we decided to have an early dinner at a Chinatown restaurant called the Lobster King.

Both my friend Linda and I had ordered vegetarian dishes, but after taking our order the waiter returned and informed us that he was going to charge us extra for each dish since vegetables are much more expensive during the winter months. I decided to have a look at their takeout menu and saw that the same low price was listed on the takeout menu as on the main menu. As a result I put forward an argument that if both the dine-in and the take-out menu are stating the same low price for both dishes, I would not agree with being charged an extra for each dish based on a verbal announcement. Either change the menu to include the higher price or charge the prices that are shown on both menus. I am not usually a difficult, picky guest in any hospitality establishment, but to try to charge more for a dish that is listed at a lower price on both menus did not seem a proper business practice to me.

The waiter / manager finally agreed to charge us the prices listed on the menu, and the food was indeed delicious. After exploring the Chicago Cultural Center and the Historic Pullman District we had gotten quite hungry and we really enjoyed our early dinner.

After reviving ourselves we hopped on the subway because we wanted to check out Little Italy. So we got on the Blue Line and were told to exit at the UIC (University of Illinois) Campus and walk southwards. By that time it was raining and it was a rather inhospitable clammy day. We actually never ended up finding Little Italy, but walked around for about 40 minutes in the rain and after this exercise of futility we decided to pursue our evening plans: to attend a live performance at Second City, Chicago’s famous comedy venue.

So we took the subway back downtown to Jackson and we waited for the Purple Line until we realized that this line only runs during rush hour on weekdays. So we inquired which line we had to take and we found out that the Brown Line (to Kimball) would take us to Second City. At that point we realized that we had also been waiting on the wrong side of the platform. I guess in the Loop el-trains only run in one direction and we had already been wondering why we had seen 3 brown line trains go by on the other side of the platform, but none of them had arrived on our side.

I’d say we spent a good 45 minutes waiting on the wrong side of the platform until we finally had enough and went downstairs to ask a CTA employee who directed us onto the correct platform. In the rainy clammy weather this wasn’t the most exciting part of our trip, but we managed to entertain ourselves with lots of insider jokes in our original Austrian dialects.

Finally we caught a brown line train and made our way up to North Wells Street, into the Old Town Neighbourhood, home of the Second City Comedy Club. Since 1959 Second City has established itself as a Chicago landmark and a national treasure. This theatre has launched the careers of such comic geniuses as John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and others more. It offers nightly comedy shows, as well as a variety of other programs and services.

The theatre has two main stages, both of which were sold out yesterday, so we headed up onto the 4th floor of the building which houses Donny’s Skybox Studio Theatre which is affiliated with Second City. This theatre features an eclectic mix of student productions as well as other alternative shows and at .00 per person, the tickets were a steal.

The Outreach & Diversity Program produces two to three original shows each year that are performed at Second City’s studio theatre, Donny’s Skybox, on the fourth floor of Piper’s Alley. At least one of these productions is an original revue written and performed by the Outreach & Diversity ensemble, a group of African American, Latino or Asian actors cast through annual auditions.

We bought tickets for the 9 pm show: “Six Degrees of Reparation”, a hip comedy revue featuring improv, original material and Second City classic scenes with an urban multicultural twist which was put on by 6 young comedians which included 5 black and 1 oriental performers.

The show offered a lot of physical comedy and a variety of different sketches. One of the funniest ones was a sketch entitled “Osama bin Laden could be anywhere”, where one of the female comedians donned a big black beard and kept popping up in different everyday situations. The “superior Asian girl” sketch played with A, B, C (Asian, Black, Caucasian) stereotypes and demonstrated how we all have pre-conceived notions of one another. In the “Black Black Awards” sketch the troupe made fun of famous celebrities such as Whitney Houston, Maya Angelou and even Martha Stewart.

One of the most poignant sketches was set in an imaginary Office Depot store, where the black and Asian store employees were giving very shoddy and unfriendly service to a variety of customers. At the end, the young black shopkeeper explained that with a wage of .50 an hour, after all her costs (food, rent, bus passes, doing her nails, etc.), she was 9 in the hole, and at that price a smile would not be included in the service.

We both enjoyed the live performance of these gifted comedians immensely as we both love live theatre and comedy performances. As far as culture is concerned, Chicago has something to offer to everyone.

Well, today is our last day here in Chicago, and the weather is forecast to be quite cold with a 60% chance of rain. Fortunately Chicago has many indoor venues to choose from so I am sure we won’t get bored.
