Georgia Attacked South Ossetia and the U.s. Supported It!

by Michael Webster: Investigative Reporter Aug 16, 2008 12:01 PM PDT

L.A. Times reported that Russia and its allied forces destroyed a key railway bridge linking war-weary Georgia’s capital to the Black Sea coast, and blow up Georgian coast guard and other vessels, effectively severing all east-west transportation routes within the small country, the Georgian Foreign Ministry announced. The move came a day after the Georgian president signed a French-backed cease-fire proposal during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Russian soldiers occupying the central Georgian town of Gori also pushed forward 14 miles toward the capital, Tbilisi, setting up positions on the country’s main east-west road 25 miles from the capital. Adjacent agricultural fields were set afire, apparently by Russian soldiers.

Global Research’s Michel Chossudovsky reported that during the night of August 7, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Georgia’s president Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.

The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets including residential areas, hospitals and the university. The provincial capital Tskhinvali was destroyed. The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths, according to both Russian and Western sources.  “The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas. Horrified civilians crawled out of the basements into the streets as fighting eased, looking for supplies.” (AP, August 9, 2008). According to reports, some 34,000 people from South Ossetia have fled to Russia. (Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, August 10, 2008)

The importance and timing of this military operation must be carefully analyzed. It has far-reaching implications.

Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces, on the immediate border of the Russian Federation and within proximity of the Middle East Central Asian war theater. South Ossetia is also at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.

NATO encouraged Georgia to attack according to Russian envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin. He sent an official note to representatives of all member countries in Brussels in connection with Georgia’s military actions against South Ossetia. He’s calling on them not to support Mikhail Saakashvili.

Russia has already begun consultations with the ambassadors of the NATO countries and with NATO military representatives. Rogozin said. “We will caution them against continuing to further support of Saakashvili.”

Rogozin says Georgian aggression against South Ossetia is obvious. “It is an undisguised aggression accompanied by a mass propaganda war,” he said.

Rogozin has linked Friday’s onslaught to the support given to Saakashvili at the recent NATO summit in Bucharest.  At the meeting, Rogozin says, it “was hinted Georgia has prospects in NATO.”

South Ossetia close to humanitarian disaster Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says he hopes Georgia’s Western partners take note of what has happened in South Ossetia and draw conclusions.

“It all confirms our numerous warnings addressed to the international community that it is necessary to pay attention to massive arms purchasing by Georgia during several years. Now we see how these arms and Georgian special troops who had been trained by foreign and U.S. specialists are used,” he said.

They also accused the Georgian authorities of ignoring the UN Security Council’s call to observe a ceasefire during the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Meanwhile, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN on Friday that Russia “is waging war against Georgia”. Claims over 2,000 Georgians have been killed during the Russian invasion so far.

He said it was in the interests of the USA to help Georgia.

“It concerns not only Georgia -it concerns the U.S. and its values. We are a freedom-loving country which is being attacked,” Saakashvili said.

Georgia has called on the U.S. and other countries to put pressure upon Russia “to put an end to a military aggression” in South Ossetia, Georgian ambassador to the U.S. Vasil Sikharulidze told the American media on Friday.

“We ask our friends, including the U.S., to be mediators and try persuading Russia to stop this military aggression and incursion into Georgia,” Sikharulidze said.

Earlier U.S. president George W. Bush said the U.S. supports the territorial integrity of Georgia.

The President of the breakaway republic of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity claims about 1,400 people have been killed by Georgian shelling.

“It is the third genocide of the Ossetian people from the side of Georgia, and Saakashvili is the main murderer,” Kokoity said.

In connection with the escalating tensions in South Ossetia, Abkhazia’s armed forces have moved to the border with Georgia, the breakaway republic’s president Sergey Bagapsh said on Friday.

“Irrespective of the development of situation in South Ossetia, we won’t stop moving to the border with Georgia. Today they launch a military aggression against South Ossetia and tomorrow it could be Abkhazia. It cannot go on like that,” Bagapsh said.

Meanwhile the EU has called for an immediate cessation of violence. It says it’s ‘deeply concerned’ about the dramatic escalation in the conflict between Tbilisi and its separatist republic.

A spokesman for the EU Council said The Union’s high representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, had spoken to Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on Thursday. He said Solana urged Saakashvili to show restraint and to return to the negotiating table.

Javier Solana’s spokesperson, Cristina Gallach, said on Friday that urgent action is needed to stop a further loss of lives.

“We are extremely concerned with the latest developments and we think that it is very regrettable that there has been loss of lives. The most urgent thing at the moment is to calm the situation down,” she said.

The NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has called on the authorities of Georgia and South Ossetia to stop the violence and to restore peaceful negotiations.

U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, Told the president today at the Crawford ranch that she also urged Russia to stop attacks on Georgia, respect its territorial integrity and withdraw its troops from Georgian territory. There is a ceasefire in effect but no one seems to be honoring it. Russia is promising to pull out of Georgia but as of this writing they have not. Russia has cut the country vividly in half and is controlling the roads and the harbors, hence controlling commerce including the flow of Georgia’s oil pipeline. The EU is not expected to do anything either as Russia already controls forty percent of all of Europe’s natural gas and an even larger percentage of their oil.

Georgia Tech Football

Georgia Tech Football

Football and athletics always has seemed to be an “afterthought” at Georgia Tech. Education and the struggle for excellence has always been the priority at Georgia Tech.

”I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva engineer. A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer.”

Those words from one of America’s most famous fight songs typify the spirit of athletics at Georgia Tech, a school with one of the most storied and honored traditions in college athletics.

Ever since 1892, when the first football team was organized on The Flats, Georgia Tech teams in all sports have represented the Institute in outstanding fashion while producing some of the best-known names in athletics. Tech has won four National Championships in football in the years 1917, 1928, 1952, and 1990. The Yellow Jacket football teams have one of the nation’s best records in bowl games at 22-14. Over the past 100 years, Tech has had only 12 head football coaches: John Heisman, Bill Alexander, Bobby Dodd, Bud Carson, Bill Fulcher, Pepper Rodgers, Bill Curry, Bobby Ross, Bill Lewis, George O’Leary, Chan Gailey and the present coach, Paul Johnson.

In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and Georgia. Due to the rivalry established in baseball games between Tech and Georgia (which is still strong after more than 100 years), the Tech students were invited to the game to cheer, of course, for Auburn. At a mass meeting, the students appointed a committee to recommend colors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended the game wearing school colors for the first time.

In 1893, when Tech’s football team played its first official game against Georgia, a group of young women from the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls, dressed in white and gold, attended the game to cheer for Tech. These ladies were some of the earliest Tech supporters to show their allegiance by wearing the now-traditional colors.

The Yellow Jacket nickname and mascot are two of the most beloved trademarks of Georgia Tech athletic teams, but many conflicting accounts exist as to the origins and beginnings of the Yellow Jacket. One thing that is clear, however, is that the nickname did not grow out of the familiar six-legged insect, but instead that the insect mascot, known as “Buzz,” grew out of the nickname.

As far as can be determined, the first reference to Tech students as “Yellowjackets” appeared in the Atlanta Constitution in 1905 and became common usage at that time.

Historians say the name, spelled as one word, was first used to describe supporters who attended Tech athletic events, dressed in yellow coats and jackets. The actual mascot was conceived at a later date.

Other common nicknames which have applied to Georgia Tech teams include Engineers, which is still used by some writers; the Techs, the first known nickname which was phased out sometime around 1910; and the Blacksmiths, which was common between 1902 and 1904. Georgia Tech football has one of the most “storied” traditions and historical memories in College Football…Here a re just a few that TECH fans all remember:

The Cumberland Game. On Oct. 17, 1916, John Heisman’s team crushed Cumberland College 222-0 in the most lopsided and highest-scoring game in college football history.

The 1929 Rose Bowl, where Cal’s Roy Riegels ran the wrong way, Tech won 8-7 and claimed its second national championship.

Oct. 3, 1942, when Tech finally won at Notre Dame for the first time in eight tries, 13-6. Freshman phenom Clint Castleberry threw a touchdown pass in his only season on The Flats, before dying while piloting a plane during World War II.

Nov. 6, 1976: Tech 23, Notre Dame 14. In the “Passless Upset,” the Jackets _ with freshman QB Gary Lanier running Pepper Rodgers’ option to perfection _ didn’t throw a pass in shocking the Irish.

Nov. 11, 1978: Tech 42, Air Force 21. On the frozen tundra in Colorado Springs, Eddie Lee Ivery ran wild for 356 yards, breaking the NCAA single-game rushing record.

Nov. 8, 1980: Tech 3, Notre Dame 3. Bill Curry’s first team as head coach of the Jackets stunned the unbeaten, No. 1 Irish and nearly beat them before a late, tying field goal.

Nov. 3, 1990: Tech 41, Virginia 38. In Charlottesville, in likely the most significant victory in Tech annals, the Jackets staged a phenomenal comeback against No. 1 Virginia’s potent offense. Shawn Jones and William Bell led the resurgence, and Scott Sisson’s field goal with 7 seconds left stunned UVA and sent Tech on to the National Championship.

Tradition and integrity continues at GA TECH as one of the most celebrated alumni, Bill Curry, now returns to Atlanta to help build Georgia State University into a Football Contender. Curry has been named the FIRST Head Coach for the Atlanta University in establishing and building a football program, beginning play in 2010.

More tradition, more football in the “Deep South”…………….

Georgia Tech Apartments – Yellow Jackets in the House

Georgia Tech Apartments – Yellow Jackets in the House

Georgia Tech sits nestled right in the middle of Atlanta, making cheap housing more difficult to find than universities and colleges that are based in a less metropolitan area. That being said, Atlanta residents are very proud of their home town university and there are options available for students looking for Georgia Tech apartments, both on and off of the main campus.

Even though rents in Atlanta aren’t exactly cheap, the good news is that for students who are looking for some off campus Georgia Tech apartments there are affordable options within walking distance of the main part of campus. By reasonable, that means if you do a little bit of homework you should be able to find a decent place that has a rent in the 0-0 range (bearing in mind that’s excluding utilities, Internet, phone, etc).

If you’re close to campus, chances are any roommates you have will also likely be Georgia Tech students, which can make the living arrangements easier. Most of the areas are considered safe, although the “Homepark” area has some negative notoriety, so do your research and make sure that the area is one you feel comfortable in and can be safe at.

Georgia Tech apartments tend to be highly sought after, so you will want to make sure to search far and wide to see what the best deals available are, and if you see an excellent deal that’s open in a good place, snatch it up!

Many of the Georgia Tech apartments on campus are some of the best moderately priced apartments in all of Atlanta. Currently Georgia Tech houses more than 16,000 students, and the surrounding apartments hold a good number of those students, as well. There are also apartments close by that aren’t officially related to the University that love renting to students. In fact, some of them only allow Georgia Tech schools to rent during the actual school year.

This is what helps give students looking to attend Georgia Tech so many options as to living situations. The actual Georgia Tech apartments are great student apartments with the customary set up you can expect from a normal student apartment at a University. A main living area, your own bedroom, and shared kitchen shared among all the roommates.

There are also Georgia Tech student rentals that act just like a normal apartment, giving you your own space for the entire area. These will be smaller than shared Georgia Tech apartments, but generally also quite a bit larger than your average freshman dorm rooms. So the good news is that if you are looking to be a Yellow Jacket, your choices in apartments are numerous.

A Personal Look at the Benefits of a Health Insurance Georgia Policy

A Personal Look at the Benefits of a Health Insurance Georgia Policy

When Rebekah turned 18 and graduated from high school, she enrolled full-time in an accredited university. Up until then, she had been considered a dependent on her parents’ health insurance Georgia policy. She had actually never paid much attention to the benefits or importance of having health insurance Georgia benefits. Her mom had always accompanied to her doctor’s appointments and taken care of payments, and Rebekah had never really questioned whether her parents, or a health insurance Georgia Company, were taking care of costs. This is pretty typical for adolescents.

However, when she turned 18, her college encouraged her to use the school’s health insurance Georgia group plan, instead of remaining on her parents’ health insurance Georgia policy. Rebekah had to complete the application process, and she received a health insurance Georgia member card directly at her college mailbox. This helped her take ownership of her own health insurance Georgia college group policy. Rebekah was given a certificate of coverage, and a list of nearby participating physicians and pharmacies that were a part of her health insurance Georgia network. Since she was now living in a different town, and had outgrown her regular pediatrician, so finding a new physician was not terrible.

Now that she was 18 and living away from home at college, Rebekah had to call and make all of her appointments. She learned what were her specific health insurance Georgia group plan benefits, pre-authorization requirements, co-insurance amounts, etc. She figured out that her particular school’s health insurance Georgia group plan required her to see in-network physicians, but there were plenty of those in the college town. Her co-payment when seeing an in-network primary general physician was very small. At one point, Rebekah started having difficulty managing her time, prioritizing, and became somewhat stressed. She sought the services of a local mental health provider. She found out, however, the co-payment when she saw behavioral health providers, was a bit higher than for her primary care physician. She was very grateful, though, that her health insurance Georgia group plan did cover the mental health services because the professional really helped Rebekah learn to organize and manage her time better, which in turn decreased her personal stress level. Rebekah was also grateful that since she was seeing provider who were part of the health insurance Georgia group plan network, all of the administrative paperwork and claims filing was handled by the provider’s office. She was learning a lot about health insurance Georgia policies, but was not ready to fill out HCFA-1500s yet. Not many people are!

After graduating, Rebekah looked for full-time work, but had a hard time finding a good job with benefits. She knew how important having health insurance Georgia policy was, so this was a priority to her when it came to employment. Rebekah had accessed plenty of medical services while she was in college, including medicines when she got pneumonia, birth control pills, and other routine examinations that were recommended by her physician. Therefore, she knew having the benefits of a health insurance Georgia plan had saved her a lot of money, and in fact, she would not have been able to get medical care for some of those things without the coverage.

Finally, Rebekah located full-time employment with an excellent health insurance Georgia group plan, and she has become an educated, informed consumer.

Besides the University Do not Miss the US Navy Supply Corps Museum in Athens, Georgia

Category : Region II

Besides the University Do not Miss the US Navy Supply Corps Museum in Athens, Georgia

Athens is the home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, situated in the Southeast quadrant of the city. It is the first state-chartered university in the country, founded in 1785. The campus is beautiful. Sanford Stadium is the fifth largest in the nation, where over 85,000 screaming fans cheered Hershel Walker and other notable athletes

Athens is also home to the US Navy Supply Corps training base and their museum housed in the Carnegie Library building. The museum gives a history of the corps and has artifacts from the mid eighteenth century, along with pieces from the USS Maine, which was blown up in Havana Cuba Harbor: the impetus for the Spanish-American War.

One interesting story told in the museum about the Corps during World War II concerns the POWs from the Bataan Death March. After incarceration, some of the men were forced to sew buttonholes and buttons on new uniforms for the Japanese soldiers. Being very inept at sewing, or claiming to be, the Japanese had the prisoners sew only the buttons on the clothing. The Japanese were finicky about how many times the thread had to pass through the four holed buttons. To achieve quota the prisoners sewed the thread through the buttons in the prescribed manner and then attached the perfect looking buttons to the uniforms with a single loop of thread. After the war and their rescue from the concentration camps, there were stockpiles of these new uniforms still in the camp. The soldiers exchanged their rags for these new clothes. After a short time, the shirts and slacks, to which they had attached the buttons, started to pop their buttons. Imagine the Japanese soldiers, while in battle, having to deal with their pants falling down and shirts loosing their buttons. Talk about true sabotage!

Downtown Athens is very scenic, complete with tree lined streets and many small boutiques. In front of the city hall is an oddity left over from the Civil War: a double-barreled cannon. The thought behind it was to place a cannon ball in each of the barrels attached to a chain. When fired both barrels would eject their balls with connecting chain into the troops and kill more soldiers. It was a great idea, but the cannon failed to work properly.

Athens is also the beginning of the Antebellum Trail. The trail generally follows Rte 441 South to Macon. In all of the towns along this historic highway are homes built before 1860. Most are in the Federal or Greek Revival style. Some are B & Bs today. Many are still private residences, well restored to their former opulence.
