The Transition of Naturopathic Medicine Into Mainstream Medicine

The Transition of Naturopathic Medicine Into Mainstream Medicine

As the world of naturopathic medicine continues to grow, so does its usage among ailing Americans. According to a study done by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as of December of 2008, about 38 percent of American reporting using some type of alternative medicine in the past twelve months. Why are people turning to naturopathic medicine as a means to get healthy and feel better? Here are a few possible explanations.

1. There are many people have not had previous success treating their ailments with a Western medicine doctor, also known as an allopathic doctor.

The many people who suffer from ailments like insomnia, allergies, chronic pain, and migraines sometimes find that allopathic doctors only mask the pain the experience with these problems. Prescription medications may only dull the pain, and a sufferer will find that although the pain may subside for a while, it will inevitably return. Naturopathic doctors want to help their patients by seeking the overall root of the problem, and look to promote overall health and well-being with the use of several remedies, including nutritional and herbal supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes, homeopathic remedies, and more. Naturopathic medicine believes in utilizing the entire body, as a whole, to treat an illness.

2. There is a growing concern for human health in regards to artificial substances that allopathic medicine uses in attempts to cure a patient.

With the extra chemicals and hormones that are being added to food, in conjunction with artificial substances found in prescription drugs, there are health studies that suggest this combination of substances in the human body can lead to negative health effects. Naturopathic doctors and naturopathic medicine use the entire body as the main source of healing instead of synthetic components. Many people who have already attempted to utilize allopathic medicine as a way to feel healthier want to utilize all of their options and seek naturopathic medicine as a way to improve health.

Where should a person go to seek naturopathic medicine treatment?

There are only seven schools that are accredited and recognized by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges, Council on Naturopathic Medical Education and North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners. Of the seven colleges of naturopathic medicine, the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, located in Tempe, AZ, is renowned for its clinical training and advancement of naturopathic medicine. Recently, the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine purchased a 42,000 square foot building adjacent to the naturopathic college. This building will house a new naturopathic medicine clinic, which used to be located in Scottsdale. The campus and clinic will be unified within the next 16 months as they work to put the two next to each other. There will be a laboratory and a pharmacy within the clinic, and the students will continue to work with the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University to study a plant that could stop smallpox if the virus was used as a bioterrorist threat. Students will no longer have to travel between facilities as they study to obtain a Naturopathic Doctor degree. The Southwest College of Naturopathic continues to help students earn their degrees in naturopathic medicine by adding about 60-70 licensed naturopathic doctors to Arizona each year.

the New England Journal of Medicine quotes Dr. Stephen Straus of the National Institute of Allergy

CFS Chronic fatigue syndrome is solitary of those ambiguous medical mystery upon which People who study this and doctors seem unable to reach agreement. A few say it is caused by a virus, others say it is allergy-related or a symptom of depression, and others, not knowing what to consider or say, insinuate it is all in the head. One detail is for sure; it brutally debilitates its victims.

On occasion, as medical information progresses, the understanding of a cycle of signs alterations. Infectious mononucleosis, termed the ?kissing sickness,? was the main sickness accepted as causing chronic fatigue. The signs were flu-like: Low-grade fever, muscular aches and pains, headache and fatigue. The most discouraging part of the sickness was that even if the person felt good for a while, the signs came back. It was not strange to have returning episodes of the sickness for two to three years.

In the mid 1980s as the AIDS plague spurred extensive inquiries into viruses, more became acknowledged about the mononucleosis syndrome. Mononucleosis became Chronic Epstein-Barr virus. A march 1988 article by a Center for Disease Control (CDC) working collection renamed it Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The CDC group furthermore outlined strict criteria for its diagnosis. To assemble their definition, a patient should suffer incapacitating fatigue for more than six months and ought to exhibit at least eight of eleven signs, counting sore throat, mild fever and muscle pains.

Why various lived through chronic fatigue and others do not, seems to be associated to their immune systems. It has been regular lived through that chronic fatigue syndrome occurs all through time as soon as the lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodiesis out of action by other illnesses, whether diagnosed or not.

The motive no one is able to fully explain how people get chronic fatigue syndrome is since so many things result chronic fatigue. Many, more situations, inadequacy and illnesses wear down and impair the immune system.
The symptoms of CFS are the signals of a poorly functioning lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodies. That is why, of none of the suggestions I render at this time work, your most excellent bet is to consult a nutritionally-oriented medical doctor or alternative medicine physician for the proper tests to detect, to decide by what exactly is causing your lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodies to break down, and contract on a personal program to fill in your nutritional blanks.

A repot in the New England Journal of Medicine quotes Dr. Stephen Straus of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that chronic fatigue could characterize an abnormal response to infection. Scientists think a number of patients by no means completely recover from the flu, but as a substitute develop long-standing signs of chronic fatigue.

A research of 15 teenagers ages 13 to 17 diagnosed of having chronic fatigue syndrome found 11 reported their symptoms as following an acute sickness, according to physicians from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Children?s sickbay and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Seven had clear tests for mononucleosis. A third of the teenagers, all of whom were female, moreover were fond to be clinically depressed.

Alternative Medicine Programs in America

Find Alternative Medicine Programs in the United States and Canada. With the phenomenal expansion of complementary and holistic therapies, there are growing numbers of healing arts schools that now offer alternative medicine programs to both practitioners and prospective students searching for unique career-training opportunities.

Of the numerous alternative medicine programs – massage therapy, holistic health, energy healing, and nutritional consulting are some of the more popular academic programs available today. However, more comprehensive alternative medicine programs in chiropractic, naturopathy and Oriental medicine are gaining leeway in the educational industry as well.

For example, alternative medicine programs in herbology entail studies in both Eastern and Western medicine principles with an emphasis on botany, medicinal plants, herbal pharmacy, and more. Depending on the healing arts school in which you enroll, more advanced training in Chinese herbal medicine may be available. As well, there are several alternative medicine programs at acupuncture schools and naturopathy schools with curricula that include in-depth studies in herbal medicine.

Other alternative medicine programs, like massage therapy and other bodywork training can be completed in less than a year’s time. In many cases, these natural healing courses are comprised of 500 training hours; however, some may well exceed 1,000 hours. Students enrolled in bodywork programs gain hands-on instruction in various massage modalities; including Swedish massage, sports massage and deep tissue massage.

Alternative medicine programs in holistic health prepare candidates for careers as holistic health practitioners. In this field of study, students gain practical training in mind/body/spirit medicines including Ayurveda, energy healing therapies, intuitive healing, aromatherapy, herbology, hypnotherapy and/or NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), and massage techniques, among others.

Homeopathy is another subject that is avidly taught in alternative medicine programs in both naturopathic schools and homeopathic schools. Believing in the theory that “like treats like,” homeopathy is a medicine that is based on the law of similars, and students who participate in this program learn about homeopathic pharmacy, Hering’s Law, materia medica, and other related subject matter.

Whether individuals choose to enhance already-established healthcare services, or are primarily interested in gaining entry-level positions in the alternative healthcare industry, completing one or more alternative medicine programs can help to improve prospective career outlook as well as giving successful candidates the skills and knowledge necessary to help in healing.
