Do it Yourself Hip Hop Music Business

At one point, artists really needed to rely on getting a recording contract or having a top management firm such as Violator Management to work their contacts and make a deal happen for the artist. This is a first hand account of how to build your own career in order to get a deal offered to you similar to Drake’s .5 Million deal from Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Records.

If you do NOT have a home studio to produce and at least reference tracks, I would start by doing this first. This will stop you from being at the mercy of any producers when you want to jump in a studio because you are creative. Creativity can hit at any moment to an artist. To be dependent upon a producer to get into their studio will hinder you and stop the creativity because you can’t just jump in and create music at will.

I recommend working and saving every dime of your money and buying an iMac computer that I am on right now first and foremost. The iMac comes with a software package called Garageband that will allow you to create music at least on your own. You MUST learn the software and the software instruments in order to become proficient with your tools. Making music is really about being technically proficient. It is a requirement to know how to use the computer, how to use the iMac, and how to really use Garageband effectively to create your own sounds.

Knowing how to use Garageband will allow you to reference your own tracks and not have to wait until you get enough money to pay the producer for studio time. The other alternative is to have great relationships with studio bosses and producers and sound engineers who can get you into the studio for free and reference tracks. Once you’re able to do this and create songs, start creating and getting your best tracks and songs together. Do NOT shop them to a record label! You will become very disgruntled and very discouraged and will go on a 10 year trek to find a recording company to get signed. This will NEVER happen in your lifetime.

Compile your best songs and attempt to put together your own album. Try to be different and make unique music. Once this is done, it is critical to move on to the next phase of the DIY Music Guide and that is to build an audience and build a fan base. This is NOT done the way artists thought it to be done on Myspace. Do NOT go putting your music on other people’s myspace as a comment. Do NOT go sending your music to DJ’s on Twitter via zshare links. Do NOT get an email of all the DJ’s that your boy has and send them emails promoting you as the next Drake and new coming of Hip Hop. This does NOT work and only makes everyone pissed off.

What do you do then if that seemed like the sure fire way to get noticed and the cheap way and every one tells you to utilize social media and facebook to promote yourself? You must find someone around you that has some money or work yourself to do this next part. You must find a sponsor who will help you pay for advertisements on Facebook and Myspace. If you’re utilizing Facebook primarily, you can create a Fan Page on there and upload your tracks to Facebook. You can also easily put your music up on iTunes via a digital distributor such as The Orchard.

The Orchard will create an account for you and allow you to upload your tracks. As a distributor, they will then get your tracks on all major online music retailers including iTunes, Walmart, Napster, etc. Your tracks will be in the online retailers. But being in the retailers and being found in iTunes is still like being on an island. No one knows you’re actually stranded on the island. You must promote yourself. Experiencing sell through of your music is the toughest part of the music industry. Having people buy your music is NOT easy even if you’re music is great. In order to get 1,000 people to click on your music you must have at least 1,000,000 people see your advertisement. This is NOT a joke and no exaggeration. The only way to truly move any type of record and get people’s interest is to literally pay in advertising or pay the DJ to spin your record.

Music is a very crowded market as seen and evidenced by the proliferation of artists on Myspace. Myspace pretty much went to crap from all the artists on their promoting their music via comments and posting bulletins. The truth of the matter is that to really get a deal like Drake you must be able to show a record company that you have sales in some form or another. You either have sales from shows or you have sales from a reputable digital distributor such as The Orchard. You will get a recording contract if you walk into a label and show them the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet report showing that you have had 2,000 ringtone downloads from iTunes in the last 3 months, and 5,000 album sales from online retailers in the last 3 months. If you cannot prove this, you will NOT be entertaining a recording contract or top flight management from Chris Lighty and Violator Management.

You must have provable sales numbers that you can show to people when you go to a pitch meeting. Do NOT focus on a recording contract. Focus on marketing and selling your music. Focus on raising money to run your advertisements on these social networks such as Myspace, Facebook, and others. And again, you must REACH millions of people and get thousands of clicks on your website or song. This is the business side of music. Music is NOT about entertaining people because you have a passion for the craft. Music is about reaching the masses and proving to labels that you can reach this audience. You are forced to generate big numbers that start by reaching smaller numbers and building up a musical tsunami for yourself.

Stubbs Restaurant Event Tickets – Austin Lives Up To Its Name As The Live Music Capital Of The World This May!

Austin, Texas doesn’t take its title as the Live Music Capital of the World lightly! Austin is home to over 200 live music venues, and you’d better bet that they are always bubbling over with eclectic live performances and packed crowds. This May in particular sees a batch of internationally touring artists stopping in Austin on their respective road trips.

Stubb’s Restaurant is one of Austin, Texas’ most beloved live music venues, and chanteuse Norah Jones will be performing a pair of dates at Stubb’s on May 1 and 2, joining a laundry list of eclectic acts that have stopped there over the years. Jones is in the midst of a 36-city tour in support of her latest album, The Fall, her fourth studio set. Jones launched her tour in Tulsa, Okla. on March 5 and will stop in cities scattered throughout the States and Canada this spring and summer. Fans with Stubbs Restaurant event tickets from StubHub.com can hear Jones perform songs like her hit single “Chasing Pirates” off The Fall when she stops in Austin.

After Norah Jones continues on from Austin on tour, Stubb’s Restaurant will host Blue October on May 8. Hailing from Houston, where the eclectic rock band formed in 1996, Blue October is currently on the road in support of their fifth studio album Approaching Normal, and fans will be flocking to the see the band perform in their home state. Blue October worked with Grammy-winning producer Steve Lillywhite (known for his work with U2) for their latest album, which is the follow-up to the band’s platinum-selling 2006 album Foiled, Blue October’s breakthrough album. Dubbed the Pick Up the Phone Tour, Blue October’s trek seeks to raise awareness of mental-health issues and benefit suicide-prevention services, according to Live Daily.

The University of Texas at Austin sits just north of downtown Austin, and in addition to Longhorns fans, the campus is packed with entertainment venues. The Frank Erwin Events Center at UT is one such venue, and one of country music’s leading ladies, Carrie Underwood, will stop there while on tour on May 8. Underwood kicked off her tour in support of her third album Play On in Reading, Pa. on March 11 and will remain on the road-with opening acts Craig Morgan and Sons of Sylvia in tow-until June 20, when she wraps things up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The American Idol winner is nominated for the coveted Entertainer of the Year honor at the upcoming 45th annual Academy of Country Awards, to be held on April 18, and is also planning her wedding to hockey star Mike Fisher. It’s a wonder she can find time to tour, but fans are happy she has!

The drive from Austin to San Antonio, the most-visited city in the Lone Star State, is definitely worth it! Aside from historical gems like the Alamo and La Villita, one of the first Spanish settlements, San Antonio is famous for the San Antonio River Walk. The River Walk snakes its way through central San Antonio along the San Antonio River and is lined with galleries, restaurants and shops. Built in 1929, San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre has remained a top venue and pillar in the South Texas city ever since. The Majestic will host Celtic Woman for two shows on May 2. San Antonio is known for its cultural diversity, and this tradition is continued when the Irish quintet comes into town. The female-powered phenomenon is on tour in support of Celtic Woman, Songs from the Heart, and fans of the talented lasses will be turning up to see them perform in San Antonio.

Sade Refuses Collabo Request from Rap Legend Jay-Z! She’s a Soldier of her Music first…

Sade Refuses Collabo Request from Rap Legend Jay-Z! She’s a Soldier of her Music first…

The legendary female singer Sade recently refused a Jay-Z collaboration request. She justifies her choice by principles, she loves her musical universe and is not interested in stepping outside.

Its seems that Sade is almost unapproachable, especially when it comes to collaboration with other artists, as she indeed just turned down a Jay-Z collaboration request. The smooth operator hit maker is very protective of her music.  She actually admitted being reluctant to feature with other singers and doesn’t like to work outside of her zone. In the meantime she also rarely allowed rappers to sample her voice but put her guard down in an extremely rare case with Nas and Raekwon. The Big boss of Def Jam, Jay-Z, was disappointed but he wasn’t the first to try and fail….

Let’s remember the Drake’s episode: in February, the Hip Hop artist pursued a possible duet with his music idol, Sade. He thought it would have been a collaboration of musical genius. Sade, however, didn’t see it that way, and politely snubbed the Young Money MC. A quite bitter pill to swallow, when he was already seeing himself hitting the studio with the songstress and possibly bringing her into the hip hop world. While she has admitted to sampling other artists herself, she refuses to be in a situation where she would have to attract a new set of fan…she already has all the loyal following that she could ever need. So she’s choosing a sort of security in her musical comfort zone, rather than jeopardizing her style, admired for more than two decades now. Well, we figured it out : collaborating is one of “her sweetest taboos”.

After the platinum selling success “Soldier of Love”, achieved in February , she finally announces a return to the stage and disclosed her first global tour in 10 years. For those who want to attend this event, don’t be the last to get your tickets to this once in a decade event as its sure to sell out many months in advance of the actual tour even beginning. Ron Eschete – Jazz Guitar Music Master

Category : Region V

Ron Eschete – Jazz Guitar Music Master

Jazz guitarist Ron Eschete was born in 1948 in Houma, Louisiana and not surprisingly his early influences were jazz guitar masters Jim Hall, Howard Roberts, and Wes Montgomery. After receiving his first guitar at the age of 14, Eschete joined a quartet and was working clubs in Louisiana before he had even graduated from high school playing jazz guitar music. He attended Loyola University where he majored in classical guitar and minored in flute. While there he studied with classical guitarist Paul Guma. Shortly after Eschete left Loyola he was tapped to tour with Buddy Greco. While on tour with Greco, Eschete set his sites on the Los Angeles music scene. In 1970 Eschete relocated to California working and recording with vibraphonist Dave Pike. Then in 1975 he joined forces with pianist Gene Harris and quickly establish his reputation as a premier jazz guitar accompanist.

Over the decades Ron Eschete has worked with the greatest artists in jazz including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Krall, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, and many more! Eschete has appreared on The Tonight Show with Diana Krall, The Merv Griffin Show with The Mort Lindsey Orchestra, and The Mike Douglas Show with Buddy Greco. He has played nearly every notable jazz venue in the southern California area including The Catalina Bar and Grill, The Jazz Bakery, Steamers, Donte’s, Carmelo’s, The Parisian Room, and The Lighthouse to name but a few. He has toured extensively and has played major venues from New York to San Francisco.

Eschete cites a 1988 gig in San Diego as a critical turning point in his career. There he began to shed his reputation as the quintessential sideman – he stepped to the center of the stage and began exploring original material. Long considered to be one of the finest guitarists in mainstream jazz by musicians and listeners alike, he has now taken over the reins and “innovative leader” might be a better name says preeminent jazz critic Zan Stewart. In 1994 he released his first solo recording for Concord Jazz Records called “A Closer Look”, showcasing his masterful fingerstyle jazz guitar sound and his seven-string Benedetto archtop guitar. In addition to this solo recording Eschete has recorded three CDs with his trio: “Softwinds”, “Rain or Shine”, and “Mo’ Strings Attached”.

While Ron Eschete’s career has been primarily focused on performance, this master jazz guitarist and musician has dedicated nearly twenty five years of his life to teaching music at many colleges and universities including North Texas State University, Utah State University, Loyola University, Louisiana State University at New Orleans, California State Universities at Long Beach and Fullerton, and Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. Ron has been described as a masterful musical chameleon. Switching melodic lines and ideas with cool efficiency and beauty, he transforms from accompanist to soloist and from musical master to musical mentor. Fortunately for aspiring guitarists, Ron has released several instructional jazz guitar tab books which teach his harmonic concepts and chord melody soloing ideas.

Peabody Conservatory trained guitarist Steven Herron helps people succeed at becoming better guitar players. His company ChordMelody.com features an enormous, unique selection of jazz guitar tab as well as guitar books and instructional DVDs by Ron Eschete himself.

Motivational Music

Motivational Music

A study by the University of Southern California found that if you live in a city and travel 12,000 miles a year, you can get the equivalent of a two-year college education every three years by just listening to audiobooks while you travel.

Many of us spend so much time traveling on a daily basis that we might ask ourselves, could we put this time to better use?
Could we use this daily opportunity as a way to increase our knowledge and keep ourselves highly motivated?
I suggest that we don’t waste this valuable time anymore.

I recently came across an amazing group of products that inspirational speaker Jim Rohn Called “The most powerful motivational communication tool of the 21st century.” These powerful tools are available from a company called Smoothe Mixx

On the Smoothe Mixx website you can get material from legendary speakers such as Brian Tracy, Les Brown, and Jim Rohn and many more. Their speeches, seminars, workshops and interviews are mixed with cool background music. These products have the potential to become key education and training resources that are both entertaining and powerfully effective. These great products can be listened to while you are in the car, on the train, at the airport, or at the gym.

In another study carried out on memory, researchers found that when people listened to information that they had never heard before, two weeks later they could only remember two percent of it. However, if they listened to it for six consecutive days, they remembered up to sixty-two percent of it two weeks later. Repeated listening is an effective way to learn.

Also, by listening to motivational material while traveling you are less likely to experience stress because you are not thinking about being stuck in traffic. Instead your mind is zoned in on doing something positive towards your continued self improvement.

I suggest that rather than reading the daily newspaper with your breakfast in the morning, you listen to some motivational material instead. A great Smoothe Mixx that offers sound advice is more motivating and beneficial than reading about the latest trouble in the economy.

Smoothe Mixx is one of the most enjoyable and effective personal development resources available today. It is also proven to accelerate success in your personal and business life. According to whole brain research, ‘listening to the spoken word and music as part of a systemized, organized process will significantly improve your learning. This will make it easier for you to absorb information, learn new belief systems and quickly achieve the results you want in life.’

However, listening is not enough, you cannot expect the Smoothe Mixx material to work for you just on its own if you don’t follow the advice given. You must be willing to take action.  Who knows, you might find that they offer you just the inspiration that you need to get yourself on the road to success in what ever area that on your you choose.

To get you started on your road to success, here is a link so that you can download a free Smoothe Mixx album. There are 14 tracks from Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, Dennis Waitley and many more:

B Taylor Music

Category : Region III

B Taylor Music

B Taylor – Hip Hop Artist
Called the Stevie Wonder of Hip Hop, by Motown Legend Pete Moore.

Growing up in Peoria Illinois, B Taylor divided his time between his hobbies, music and sports. Luckily,
those two interests would interweave throughout his life, granting him many career opportunities. Having a reverend for a father and a church youth choir director for a mother, it was inevitable that Taylor would be active in his church choir, which would nurture a love for making music. Throughout childhood, he played the drums, piano, organ, and guitar and sang in the choir. His first songs were taught to him by his friends Bob Robinson and Tim Kelly, who would become the platinum-selling songwriters/producers of such hits as Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee” (15x platinum CD), Sisqo’s “The Thong Song” (8 weeks at #1 on the charts in the U.S. and 30 countries), and Case’s “I’m Missing You” (4 weeks at #1 on the pop charts).

B Taylor’s athletic prowess took him to college where he played Division I football and basketball at the University of Missouri. While in Missouri, Taylor was also active in the Naval Reserves and was picked up by the Secretary of the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Vern Clark, to play on the All-Navy and Team USA basketball teams as part of his service. Upon completion of the basketball tour, the Navy assigned Taylor special duty to allow him to continue his professional sports and music careers while completing active military service and he received an honorable discharge in Dec. 2003. Team USA brought Taylor to the west coast where he was invited to play piano at a celebrity/NFL function. This event proved to be a turning point in his career as he was discovered by Snoop Dogg’s brother, Bing. B Taylor was asked to play piano at Snoop and Bing’s mother’s birthday party and later at her wedding. At the party he played “Ribbon in the Sky” for the recording artist Lenny Williams “Sparks of Love”. That experience spawned an opportunity to begin recording in a studio in San Diego where he met members of Blink 182, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World and was given the chance to join them on their Pop Disaster Tour in2002. This break led to the decision to pursue music more seriously.

Since then B Taylor has been performing in clubs across the country and at various special events, such as the 2004 NBA All-Star Extravaganza, the 2004 Narcotics Anonymous Convention, a concert at New York’s Manhattan Center with Cuba Gooding, and more recently the 2007 American Music Awards Pre Red Carpet event in Los Angeles and the 2008 Oscar’s pre-party at the at the Forbidden City in Los Angeles.

B Taylor has worked with a variety of artists, notably rapper/actor/comedian Nick Cannon (Drum Line), recording artist Nate Dogg and Legendary singers Cuba Gooding (“Everybody Plays a Fool”) and more recently platinum recording artist and producer Pete Moore of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Taylor has also been busy speaking about how he balanced his military service, music and sports careers, appearing on San Diego’s KUS, San Diego’s NBC and Telemundo. Meanwhile, B. Taylor continues to record in the studio where he acts as a rapper, songwriter, and producer. This multi faceted prodigy has already begun to leave his mark in the music world with his unique twists on the traditional smooth sounds of R&B mixed with the energetic beats of hip-hop.

A Young Kid’s Guide to Impressing your Parents With your Rock Music

Category : Region III

A Young Kid’s Guide to Impressing your Parents With your Rock Music

Face it: many have been the times when you’re lying there in bed, quietly listening to your favorite band – what constitutes “quietly” is, of course, full volume – and your mom, your dad, or, worse yet, both, break into your private domain and yell at you to “turn that damn music doooowwwwn!!” and to “stop listening to those worthless bums”. But, c’mon, isn’t there something you can do to start changing your parents’ minds about what you hold most dear?

Sure! Impress them. Knowing what to say to your parents in these cases, and learning what interesting little piece of rock star history you can shine a light on for this purpose, is of the utmost important when trying to impress dear ole mom and dad. There are many wonderful stories and scrumptious bits of data that will just have your head brimming with enthusiasm, just waiting for your parents to once again try to tell you off.

Going down a list of bands, I’ll mentiono a couple of things you might want to ponder and/or do some more research about:

Queen:

•Freddie Mercury: Ealing Art College– graphic illustration

•John Deacon: Chelsea College – electronics degree

•Roger Taylor: first studied dentistry at London Hospital Medical College and left it in order to get a BSC in Biology at London Polytechnic

•Brian May: this would be the piéce de rèsistance here. He studied at Imperial College London and got his degree in astrophysics. In 2007, he completed his PhD. and was also named Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

The Rolling Stones:

•Mick Jagger: studied economics at the famed London School of Economics but then something got in the way. Namely, the Stones.

•Charlie Watts: went to Harrow Art School, became a commercial artist

•Ron Wood: like Freddie Mercury, he also studied at Ealing Art College.

Kiss:

•Paul Stanley: went to Manhattan School of Music and Art and also to Bronx Community College but gave it up when music started to rear its head.

•Gene Simmons: Richmond College – got a degree in education and is fluent in Hungarian, German, English and Hebrew (and also speaks some Spanish – I know that from personal experience.)

The Police:

•Sting: went to Northern Counties Teachers’ Training College – got a degree in education

•Andy Summers: UCLA – studied classical guitar

•Stewart Copeland: went to California Western University and UC Berkeley

Van Halen:

•Alex Van Halen: briefly went to Pasadena City College to study music

•Michael Anthony: studied music at Pasadena City College

Sheryl Crow:

•University of Missouri – B.A. in Education, Music Composition and Performance

Bon Jovi:

•David Bryan: was studying Pre-Med at Rutdgers University and left it to go to Juilliard (music) instead

We can also add a roster of people who have studied at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, MA:

•John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy –

Dream Theater

•Steve Vai

•Tim Owens (Ripper Owens)

•Al Pitrelli

•Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford – Aerosmith

•Steve Smith – Journey

•Will Calhoun – Living Colour

So there you have it, kids. A small list which can undoubtedly be expanded with some research on your part. But always remember something: it’s really not that important to know if they studied this or that because what they play still reaches your heart. If you parents need some sort of college degree for them to pass favorable judgement on a person then that’s something that perhaps they should have learned in college that it’s wrong.

Bonnaroo Music Festival Tickets – Bonnaroo Music Festival Brings On Music And Comedy

Although the annual Bonnaroo Music Festival is best known for its music-last year’s headliners included Phish, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Snoop Dogg and Nine Inch Nails—the Manchester, Tenn. festival also showcases an impressive array of comedians. In the past, Bonnaroo has featured hilarious entertainers like Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, Lewis Black, David Cross, Zach Galifianakis, Dave Attel and Louis CK, and this year, none other than Conan O’Brien will perform. Hosting Bonnaroo’s “Which” stage and performing in the Comedy Theatre, O’Brien is on the road after Jay Leno took back his late night throne. The flame-haired funny man remains under contract with NBC until the fall and decided to embark on a road trip until his return to the small screen.

The 2010 edition of the Bonnaroo Music Festival will also feature a batch of up-and-coming comedians like Pete Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani, Reggie Watts and Amy Schumer hitting the road for the Bonnaroo Comedy Tour. The side-splitting tour kicks off at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana on April 1 and will continue on to college campuses like Iowa State University in Aimes, Drake University in Des Moines, University of North Carolina and the University of Wisconsin in Platteville. More dates and additional comedians are expected to be announced in the near future.

When it comes to music, Bonnaroo organizers did it again this year, lining up Jay-Z, Dave Matthews, Kings of Leon and Stevie Wonder as headliners. Jay-Z will perform a late-night set on Saturday, June 12 on the “What” stage after Wonder’s headlining gig. Billboard.com reports that the lineup for the 2010 festival arrived on Feb. 9 and didn’t disappoint festival-goers. If that is the direction you’re seeking, you will want to be certain that the music school you are considering has a good program in audio production or sound engineering.

The University of Colorado at Denver is possibly the most well-known music school in the state. Their arts and media department offers highlights audio production with the goal of giving you a competitive advantage in a stiff industry. Note, however, that getting this type of education in a purely college environment has its share of disadvantages.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not about to dishearten anyone from obtaining a quality college education. Rather, this is to highlight that to have a successful career in the field of music recording and production, you need to have rigorous, current and focused training; what you get out of a college environment is a bit generic. You would still have training – but this could prove to be insufficient and would render your learning curve steep. In general terms, music schools in Colorado might not be your finest choice.

So, what are your other alternatives then? For starters, try looking for a specialized trade school that can give you what you need – one that you can really use in your chosen career. Just like anything else, this option has its set of disadvantages. One to be competitive in today’s rapidly-changing industry, a specialized school has to spend a lot of money keeping equipment and technology current and that means they’re typically quite pricey. Some of them aren’t accredited, and some don’t offer financial aid. Lastly, the probability of relocation is there – because the best of them may not necessarily be headquartered in Colorado.

One other alternative that is gaining traction these days also happens to be one that makes a lot of sense and that’s to find an education program that matches students with working professionals in a mentor/apprentice approach. What makes this method very desirable is the fact that this allows students to learn the craft in real-time, real-life environment. Most essentially, the cost of this quality education would be considerably reduced because learning happens in a self-sustaining environment. A school that utilizes this method doesn’t have to stock a classroom with equipment, because the classroom is a working recording studio.

All these being said, you may even find that Colorado music schools like the UC-Denver is just right for you. Still, it feels wonderful to know that your choice is not limited to attending college. Alternative schools like the Recording Connection will give you a fine education at a lower cost. Who knows, you might find that the best learning environment is just lurking in the streets.
