Southern California Trojans – The Mightiest Fighters In NCAA

History tells us that there are different groups of people who wanted to dominate the world. Despite knowing that different civilizations have already flourished in different lands, they engage in battles and wars to gain control of the territory. Different empires and dynasties ruled over the world in the conquest to expand territories and to proclaim their kings the mightiest of all.

It was not a friendly war or even a war with good cause. These wars lead to the different rise and falls of each group. Yet, even though they have their own vicissitudes, the accomplishments and failures are still part of our history books.

In the field of sports, domination is part of the game. Every team would want to be hailed as the best among the best. For years, different games are held to see who will arise as champions. Players prepare for months prior to the real game to make sure that they have the endurance and the skills whomever they have to face. In NCAA, one team of the best teams in their history is the Southern California Trojans.

Their name is not one of the empires or the dynasties, known to be the fiercest conquerors in the world. But definitely, their name is just as great as it was established in the Greek Mythology. There is no Helen for their cause of battle, but they have happened to be excelling for years with many unprecedented win. They have won over 88 NCAA championship titles, of which 76 titles belong to their mens team. This is such a remarkable record because they have by far more wins than any other university could attain.

They have gain domination in different sports. One of their best teams is their football team. They have managed to outnumber their greatest rivals in terms of titles for the National Championships. Their baseball team has garnered 12 titles, bagging their latest win in 1998 under the supervision of Mike Gillespie.

Another field of sports wherein they got the most wins is in the track and field. This is just one of the best records in the history of NCAA as they won 26 titles. There were four coaches noted for their win, and Dean Cromwell was one of them. Their volleyball team is also one of the best.

Of course, their team for women made a sound in NCAA but they never got as much wins as their mens team are. It just proves that Southern California Trojans are great protectors of their name in the field of sports. They are one of the best teams in NCAA and over America. Not only they have conquered America but they also made it to the Olympics. They are one of the top schools in the field of sports and academics. Not many teams can level with their number of wins in NCAA and their curriculum.

They are just like the people of Troy, who were known for their riches and massive defensive walls. No wonder, they are able to get successive wins for years because of their amazing talents to defend their title.

Freddie Brister is a huge fan of the Pac 10 and the Southern California Trojans. Check out his Southern California Trojans Merchandise.

Watch the Michigan State University Spartans online this season to see if they can improve on the great results from the past two seasons. I will be all set to catch all the fabulous Spartan hardwood action watching from the comfort of a seat pulled up in front of my own computer screen. Why don’t you do the same?

You could catch the return of Korie Lucious who should round out the starting five with Kalin Lucas, Durell Summers, Draymond Green and Devon Roe. Keith Appling may apply a bit of pressure on Lucious for that starting spot if he continues to improve on defense. Once Coach Tom Izzo gets a regular rotation going, there should be a spit for both Mike Hebler and Austin Thornton. There hasn’t been this much depth on a Spartan team since 2003.

This group of Spartan ball handlers is a lot more talented in the skill area (Green) and athleticism (both Roe and Adreian Payne) plus a size advantage in Derrick Nix. Garrick Sherman is a developing project but highly talented. Both Alex Gauna and Russell Byrd will be redshirted. Byrd due to injuries.

Catch this great Spartan hardwood action when you get a hold of this great software I found online that will give you access to every televised game. It is extremely simple to download, install and then operate – on either a PC or Mac. Get connected with high-speed Internet and you’re set.

Michigan Buick Dealers Hear Buick Teams up with NCAA to Share Community Inspirations

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Buick dealers may be interested to know how Buick is giving back to the community. There are many stories about victories and champions told about teams and their games, but stories about what those team members did after they played may be left in the shadows. Buick along with NCAA, Turner Sports and CBS Sports have partnered to create a campaign to share these inspiring stories of former student-athletes with the community.

Together these organizations will create the Buick Human Highlight Reel, which will tell the true stories of the lessons, involvement, reach and connection that has been made by former student-athletes.

According to the NCAA, some of the stories and former student-athletes that will be featured include:

• Dr. Gabe Lewullis, who scored the winning shot for Princeton University against defending champion UCLA in 1996. Lewullis is a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon and spokesperson for Our Future Stars, a non-profit organization that works to get corporate funding for high school sports programs at risk of being shut down due to budget cuts.

• Cullen Jones, who swam for North Carolina State University and became the second African-American in history to win an Olympic Gold medal in the sport. Jones works with the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash program to teach minority children how to swim.

• Dr. Denton Cooley, who played basketball at the University of Texas – Austin, and is a pioneer in open-heart surgery. Cooley played in the first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1939 and went on to perform the first successful heart transplant in the United States in 1968 and implanted the first totally artificial heart in a human in 1969.

The Buick Human Highlight Reel is planned to launch at the start of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Other ways Buick will be reaching out with this new campaign include an archive of the complete stories available at www.ncaa.com/buick,which will include videos from filmmakers associated with a creative social network called Zooppa; a 30-minute television show with some Human Highlight Reel stories will air before the 2011 NCAA Men’s Final Four semifinal games on April 2; and, finally, a few selected video profiles will air during preliminary-round tournament coverage on truTV.

Buick recently announced the Buick Achiever Scholarship Program, as some Michigan Buick dealers may know, and this new partnership will be another way for Buick to help guide the next generation of leaders by inspiring with stories of community involvement.

“The Buick Human Highlight Reel shows the continued leadership and dedication that student-athletes have once they complete their academic programs and become active in their communities or involved with broad initiatives that have a positive influence on the lives of others,” said Peter Davis, NCAA director of championships and alliances in a NCAA press release.

The Buick Highlight Reel will also include a section on its website called “Tell Us Your Story”, where fans may share their stories about how NCAA former student-athletes may have helped them or affected them in some way.

Michigan Buick dealers may be proud to be a part of a corporation that wants to share the positive influencers who shape the community as Buick steps in laying a strong foundation to keep these stories alive.

First 2 Rounds in 2008 Ncaa Tournament Produce 1 Major Upset in Every 6 Games

Category : Region III

First 2 Rounds in 2008 Ncaa Tournament Produce 1 Major Upset in Every 6 Games

Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley

The first two rounds of the 2008 NCAA College Basketball Tournament underscored just how far parity has come in the men’s competition as at least 1 major upset occurred every 6 games (8 major upsets and 3 minor upsets in 48 games). The major upsets included:

#10 Seed Davidson Knocks Off #2 Seed Georgetown 74-70

Georgetown breezed past UMBC 66-47 before running into this year’s new media darling, Davidson, which upended #7 Gonzaga in Round 1, 82-76, behind 8-of-10 3-pointers by Wildcat guard Stephen Curry who finished with 30 points in the second half and 40 total.

Curry returned where he left off against Georgetown, throwing down 30 points (25 in the second half) and adding 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds and NO turnovers. Curry is the son of Dell Curry, a former Virginia Tech All-American and NBA star, proving that your gene pool does count.

With two major upsets in its first two NCAA playoff games, Davidson has caught the attention of everyone. The Wildcats now run smack into #3 Wisconsin and its tenacious Badger defense. Wisconsin just might give Curry another 30-35 points and win anyway.

#13 Siena Upends #4 Vanderbilt 83-62

Siena had its moment in the sun as Kenny Hasbrouck popped in 30 and Tay Fisher added another 19 with 6-of-6 3-pointers to stun Vanderbilt and become the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team to reach Round 2 of the NCAA tourney since Manhattan in 2004. Then #12 Villanova promptly sent Siena back home in Round 2, 84-72.

#7 West Virginia Turns Back #2 Duke 73-67

Duke barely made it into Round 2 with a last-second shot that allowed them to sneak past #15 Belmont 71-70 before meeting West Virginia. The Mountaineers made Duke look like the Blue Devils did not belong in the tournament. The glory days of Coach K and his Blue Devils are slowing down as more athletes are leaving earlier for the NBA; for years Coach K was able to convince his great players to hang around the campus longer.

#13 San Diego Uses Overtime to Tame #4 Connecticut 70-69 and #12 Western Kentucky Uses Overtime to Tame #5 Drake 101-99

Talk about rooting for the underdogs. De’jon Jackson’s pull-up jumper with 1.2 seconds left in overtime gave the San Diego Toreros their first win in 4 tournament appearances. How many of you actually knew the nickname for San Diego before its victory over Connecticut?

Ty Rogers drained a 3-pointer with 3 defenders in his face and no time on the clock to give the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers a stunning win over the Drake Bulldogs. The poor Bulldogs were down by 16 points but came back to lead 99-98 with 5.2 seconds left, then Tyrone Brazelton (who had a career high 33 points) raced up the court, kicked the ball to Rogers, who was not about to settle for a tie with 3 defenders in his face and no time on the clock.

Victories like these are why the NCAA March Madness tournament is the best organized, best run, most competitive and most exciting playoff in sports today. To put the icing on the cake, #12 Western Kentucky eliminated #13 San Diego 72-63 in Round 2.

#12 Villanova Outlasted #5 Clemson 75-69

Villanova, which has more wins as a lower-seeded team in the tourney than any other program since 1979, trailed by 15 in the first half but came back to win behind 21 points by Scottie Reynolds and 17 by Corey Fisher. The Villanova Wildcats then eliminated Siena 84-72 to move into the Sweet 16. Pretty slick work by the Wildcats.

#11 Kansas State Upsets #6 Southern Cal 80-67

Emily MacLeod and Michigan State Win the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Reigonal Cross-Country Championships

Category : Region III

Emily MacLeod and Michigan State Win the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Reigonal Cross-Country Championships

Copyright © 2010 Ed Bagley

For the Michigan State women’s cross-country team, the time to win is now. And believe you me, the Spartans have made that decision really clear recently.

Fresh off winning the Big Ten Conference title, Michigan State’s women showed the same great talent and resilience in once again running to victory with the individual and team titles at the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Regional championship meet.

Senior Emily MacLeod again led the Spartans by winning the 6-kilometer race in 20:18.76, successfully defending her individual title that she first won in last year’s race.

MacLeod was followed in by junior Carlie Green (a sensational 6th-place finish in 20:41.98), junior Rebekah Smeltzer (an outstanding 11th-place finish in 20:53.17), sophomore Kristen Smith (30th in 21:32.19) and freshman Julia Otwell (32nd in 21:38.27). Their overall average time was 21:00.88, a hair from under 21 flat.

The Spartans were the only team to place 3 runners in the top 15 – MacLeod (1st), Green (6th) and Smeltzer (11th).

Michigan State’s winning score of 80 was 16 points better than arch-rival Michigan’s 96, as the Wolverines had to settle for 2nd place once again (they finished as runner-up to Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference championships).

The next 8 teams in were Toledo (3rd with 130), Ohio State (4th with 139), Indiana (5th with 167), Notre Dame (6th with 207), Miami-Ohio (7th with 220), Central Michigan (8th with 232), Dayton (9th with 248), and Wisconsin (10th with 266).

The Great Lakes Regional at Oakland (MI) University featured 33 teams and 231 runners on the 3.72-mile course.

Spartan sophomore Katie Haines was 74th and freshman Sara Kroll was 88th.

MacLeod ran a strong and smart race. “I was just really trying to stay relaxed and calm,” said MacLeod, “I knew the Toledo girl was going to go out fast. I just stayed back, stuck to my strategy and everything worked out.”

“Emily came out today not really wanting to lead after knowing the strategy of several of the other runners,” said Walt Drenth, Michigan State’s Director of Cross-Country.

“She kept her poise throughout the whole race. Prior to the race we talked about minimizing both her mental and physical efforts in preparation of the NCAA Championships,” continued Drenth.

“After staying back for some of the race, (she) caught up with the leaders with about 400 meters to go, and then took off to win the race. When you come into a race as the defending champion, you really have a lot of people looking to take a run at you. She handled the expectations well and it showed the type of person she is, as well as the type of team Michigan State is. It is about the team, not the individual.”

By winning, Michigan State automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA championship meet. By winning the individual title, Emily MacLeod became the first Spartan ever to win back-to-back championships. Her win was also the 3rd straight by Michigan State as Nicole Bush won the individual title in 2008, running 20:48.5.

Michigan State also won back-to-back Great Lakes titles in 2006 and 2007. Last year the Spartan women finished 5th in the team competition.

Emily MacLeod was subsequently named 2010 Great Lakes Region Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year, and Director Walt Drenth was named Great Lakes Women’s Coach of the Year.

The Wisconsin men again dominated this year’s Great Lakes Regional meet, putting together a dream 2-6-7-8-9 finish to win with 32 points to runner-up Indiana’s 76 points.

This time the Badgers were led by sophomore Reed Conner (2nd in 30:28.70), sophomore Maverick Darling (6th in 30:31.61), junior Elliot Krause (7th in 30:31.79), sophomore Mohammed Ahmed (8th in 30:31.85), and senior Landon Peacock (9th in 30:32.02). Their average winning time was 30:31.20 over the 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) course.

Do you think that Wisconsin has a chance of repeating again next year? Are you serious, mate? They appear to have a lock on the men’s competition for some years to come.

Wisconsin’s 6th finisher, junior Phil Thomas, was 23rd in 30:51.93. If you think that was not fast enough, consider this thought: his time would have had him finishing 3rd in scoring on 28 of the 31 teams in the competition.

The message: do not mess with the men Badgers when they are running, or cornered with no way out – you will likely be watching their backsides throughout the race.

Cincinnati’s Eric Finan won the individual title in 30:25.34, a 4:53.8 average per mile.

Michigan State’s men were 5th with senior Patrick Grosskopf finishing 13th in 30:39.06. He earned all-region honors for the second consecutive year, and qualified for the NCAA finals as an individual.

UConn admits to major NCAA violations

UConn admits to major NCAA violations

But the university says the evidence does not support the NCAA  nfl jersey allegation that coach Jim Calhoun — who has won two national titles with the Huskies — failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance.

In a report released Friday, the school acknowledges its basketball staff made impermissible telephone calls and text messages as cited by the NCAA in a May report that followed a 15-month investigation. It also admits it improperly provided free game tickets to high school coaches and others.

A hearing is set for Oct. 15 before the NCAA infractions committee, which could accept UConn’s decision or impose additional penalties.

“I am deeply disappointed the university is in this position,” University of Connecticut president Philip E. Austin said in a statement. “It is clear mistakes have been made. This is a serious matter and we have worked in full cooperation with the NCAA. We look forward to fully resolving these issues and restoring our men’s basketball program to a level of unquestioned integrity.”

The allegations stem from the recruitment of former player Nate Miles, who was expelled from UConn in October 2008 without ever playing a game for the Huskies. He was charged with violating a restraining nfl jersey order in a case involving a woman who claimed he assaulted her.

The NCAA and the school have been investigating the program since shortly after a report by Yahoo! Sports in March 2009 that former team manager Josh Nochimson helped guide Miles to Connecticut, giving him lodging, transportation, meals and representation.

As a former team manager, Nochimson is considered a representative of UConn’s athletic interests by the NCAA and prohibited from having contact with Miles or giving him anything of value.

The school said it found that the basketball mlb jerseys staff exchanged more than 1,400 calls and 1,100 text messages with Nochimson between June 2005 and December 2008.

The responses, totaling more than 700 pages, were given to the NCAA on Sept. 7 but made public Friday after the school blacked out a significant number of items to comply with federal education privacy laws.

A former chairmain of the NCAA infractions committee said Connecticut’s response and sanctions a week before its scheduled hearing in Indianapolis won’t be a surprise to the panel.

NCAA Football – Oklahoma Sooners defeat Connecticut on Fiesta Bowl 2011

The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is a well-known field for the Oklahoma Sooners. They now the town, they now the locker rooms, they know the tunnel that leads to the field. They have been there a couple of times; they just haven’t been able to win this thing for a long time. As a matter of fact, the last time the Sooners won the Fiesta Bowl was back in 1976 when they defeated Wyoming. That all came to an end on Saturday during the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners brought in their A-game into the desert and crushed the UConn Huskies by 48-20. The Sooners offensive was simply brilliant and despite putting on a good fight in their first ever Fiesta Bowls, The Sooners where too much of a team for the Huskies that went home without the title. The Oklahoma Sooners where 5-0 in BCS Bowls before they made their trip to Arizona to face Connecticut, a team that at 8-5 for the season and coming from the Big East, had struggled to pull itself into the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. Taking a look back at what had happened during the previous trips to the BCS Bowls, Oklahoma couldn’t help to get that “here we go again feeling”. Let’s take a quick look at the numbers for a second. In 2009 the Oklahoma Sooners had the privilege to play for the BCS National Championship Bowl against the Florida. The Gator won by 24-14 in this exciting game. The year before that, the Sooners faced WVU in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. The West Virginia Mountaineers put on a baffling 48-28 upset against the Sooners. In 2007 the Sooners will again take a go at the Fiesta Bowl. For the first time in many years, the Sooners would take a chance to win the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State, but the Boise State Broncos proved to be a stronger team and defeated the Sooners in an intense 43-42 smack down. Before that it was the 2005 Orange Bowl. The Sooners were playing the USC Trojans and despite holding on a great season record, the No.1 ranked team in the nation, the Trojans, won the game 19-55. In 2004 the Oklahoma Sooners played the Sugar Bowls against LSU. Head Coach Nick Saban and the Tigers took an important 14-21 win over the Sooners. So yes, that was 0-5 for the Sooners in BCS Bowls and that was certainly hurting not only the fans but head coach Bob Stoops as he had been in front of the Sooners every one of those failing years. The Sooners remembered all these games before they played UConn on Saturday. And they made the Huskies pay. The Sooners quarterback, Landry Jones, finally emerged from under the shadow of Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and played out an extraordinary game. He went for a school-bowl record 429 yards completing 34 of 49 for three touchdowns and one interception. It’s got to feel good to finally live to its expectations. In 2007 and 2008 the Sooners arrived to Arizona as the favorite. They left a bit embarrassed and disappointed. This time around, the Sooners took the win back to Norman, Oklahoma where thousands of fans where waiting for them.

The Best Ncaa Basketball Coaches!

The best NCAA College Basketball Coaches have the uncanny ability to get their players motivated for “Big” games and throughout the entire season. Here’s a list of some of NCAA basketball’s best coaches:

John Thompson- coached the mighty Georgetown Hoyas (“Hoya Paranoia”) to multiple NCAA championships, and 2 of the most dominant centers in NCAA and NBA history; Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. Coach John Thompson’s influence on the game of basketball is evident by his former player, Patrick Ewing’s induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Typically when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame and included in the realms of such great basketball talent, it’s a direct reflection of their coach, such is the case with former Georgetown University Coach and former Boston Celtic- John Thompson, one of the best collegiate coaches in basketball history. Coach Thompson’s best collegiate coaching days were in the Big East Conference against the likes of…Syracuse University, St. John’s University, Boston College, Providence College, Villanova University and Pitt University (alma mater of former NFL Dallas Cowboy- Tony Dorsett). Played for the great, legendary Coach Ed Palubinskas of Olympic fame and college history. Ed Palubinskas set Olympic scoring records while playing for the Australian Olympic Basketball National Team and is well kwown for shooting accuracy so much that he tutored the great NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal while with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and currently the NBA World Champion Miami Heat! Ed Palubinskas was great to play for, he made me work really hard and taught me to shoot to convert and with accuracy!

Ed Palubinskas is developer of “The Smartball” advertised on the NFL Network and ESPN. http://www.hoops227.atomicshops.com

I can remember, as well as I’m sure my teammates can recall ‘Coach Palubinskas’ singling me out after practice to run sprints! I remember vividly ‘Coach P’ stating to me ‘on the line,’ over and over again, so many times that I soon understood how important the game was. The irony is that I didn’t walk out of practice, I ran every sprint he demanded of me and I returned to practice the next day…the rest is history! The State of Idaho’s leading scorer that year at 24 pts/gm. Hard work pays off!” —Coach Jamaal Al-Din
