Asheville, North Carolina – Is This The Happiest City In The World?

Asheville, North Carolina boasts the biggest house in the United States, Biltmore House, on the Biltmore Estate to the south of the city. With its own indoor pool and bowling alley, this 250 room house was the work of the wealthy George Vanderbilt II. Completed at the end of the nineteenth century and originally built as a private residence, the house and adjacent gardens are now a top tourist attraction, not to be missed.

The citations for Asheville read like the blurb on a Happiness theme park brochure. How would you like to visit “The Happiest City For Women”, or one of “The Best Places To Re-invent Your Life”? Well, if you would, this is the place for you. Frommers guide books rank it in the top seven places to live in America and in the top twelve places in the world that you should visit in your life.

With the city now boasting a population of 83,318, according to recent figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, it has been labeled one of the nation’s top 25 arts destinations, by AmericanStyle magazine. Readers of this quality publication, devoted to art, craft, travel and interior design, also voted it number 1 in their list of the top 25 small cities in 2010. The city is proud of its Art Deco architecture, to be found the city hall and many other prominent buildings.

Asheville, North Carolina, is proud of its galleries – over 50 of them – that showcase every medium in the arts, crafts, music and more. As if to emphasize the city’s devotion to art, one recent program has seen local artists in the fields of bronze, wrought iron and blown glass, involved in creating over 300 signs, directing visitors to around 90 local attractions.

Having more than its fair share of festivals, Asheville is a destination for musicians, artists and sports lovers from around the country. The annual 3-day Moogfest honors the memory of Bob Moog, inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, the instrument that changed the world of music in the sixties and seventies. Bob was a research professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA), for thirty years, until his death in 2005. UNCA was also the home of the Bulldogs basketball team whose player Kenny George was the tallest in the history of college basketball, at an incredible height of 7 feet 8 inches.

Not to be outdone by artists and sports fans, food connoisseurs are well catered for by the Foodtopian Society in Asheville. Foodtopia is a unique commitment to fresh, locally grown and produced food and they certainly have a great infrastructure in place here. With up to twenty tailgate markets in the area, supporting sustainable agriculture and the farm-to-table movement, you can sample these gastronomic delights in some of the 250 restaurants in the area.

Asheville, North Carolina has, not surprisingly, attracted celebrities from all walks of life, with one hotel having played host to ten presidents of the United States, from President Taft right through to President Obama. This same hotel also numbers The Great Houdini, F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Gershwin and Henry Ford among its guests. If such luminaries as these can be attracted to Asheville, then you can rest assured you’ll find it lives up to your expectations when you decide to pay a visit.

John Winchester writes about Asheville windows, sunrooms, awnings and other supplies for home and business in the Western North Carolina area.

That’s how fast our kids are growing up. This place is like a magnet to attract our kids and future grandkids. We are so happy to get involved now!”

The Key is Thinking With Clarity In This Uncertain Time

Given the current economic landscape, many folks today are trying to navigate through all the economic malaise that has caused stock prices to drop significantly over the past 5+ months. Once again, scandal has hit both Wall Street and Washington and many people we talk to feel both entities are out of touch with Main Street. It is important not to get caught up in the hype of it all but to look at the facts so you can make good choices now for your financial future going forward. Let’s look at what these are and by doing so, hopefully you can make good choices and perhaps use this volatile time to take advantage of abnormal pricing in this current real estate market.

Now that real estate has seen a correction in pricing, is this the right time for you to purchase? Let’s examine what we do know…

Interest rates are at historic lows – If your credit is good and purchasing property is financially within your means, this is an excellent time to borrow money at very attractive rates.

There is a large supply of good quality real estate in the marketplace – as well as not so good real estate! Due to the downturn in the economy, many who own properties are being forced to sell their prized second home as they can no longer afford it due to the downturn in the economy. There are also those that purchased property as an investment and some of these investors have walked away from these lots and homes and their obligation to pay on them. Due to this, there are some excellent buys in both desirable and less desirable properties.

There are excellent values in the current market if you know how to find them – and they are not only short sales and foreclosures. NClakefront.com Realty concentrates on real estate in North Carolina – specifically lake property. These areas are off anywhere from 10% to 50%. If you were looking at a particular city or a specific property or development before the downturn, you have got to like where prices are at now! Add to that, developers and sellers are motivated to work with a qualified buyer so the concessions and conditions they are offering to the buyer are generous in this market.

Investors feel at a loss to get accurate information on their stock holdings and some will turn to investments they have more ‘control’ over – such as real estate. Due to this, investable funds will once again turn to real estate as people are frustrated with the unpredictability and inequity of the stock market. This includes corporate executive excessive compensation and the scandal of mismanagement of funds by both corporations and money managers who were managing the accounts of many investors. Real estate is an investment, regardless of the current value; that can be enjoyed while owned. Take the second home that a couple has purchased for their entire family to enjoy. Even in a downturn, that home can represent a place where memories are made, family gatherings are held and traditions established. These are attributes that have nothing to do with money. As assets such as stocks and real estate return in value, people who have been jarred by owning blue chip stocks for safety, income and moderate conservative returns may decide to re allocate some of their funds to a hard asset such as real estate.

Baby Boomers, 78 million of them, started to retire at the age of 62 in 2008 and this waive has just begun. These retirees will consider whether or not to relocate now that they can. Let’s do the numbers…half of the Baby Boomers polled say they will relocate 3 hours or more away from their primary home at retirement. That is 39 million people. Let’s cut that number in half to be conservative and that is still 20 million people. That right there is a lot of real estate activity! It is estimated that 43% of retirees will choose the Southeast United States for their retirement location so this area of the U.S. will noticeably feel the migration pattern of this demographic shift. Most importantly, per Live South Magazine, North Carolina recently passed Florida as the most popular place in the southeast to retire.

Taxes and weather; these two factors despite the economic landscape, are continuing to fuel peoples’ decision to move southward at retirement. Folks can’t afford or justify the taxes they are paying living in northern cities. Add to that, the winters are harsh. A dear friend of mine said, “You know you are a northerner when you describe the seasons where you live as winter, almost winter, still winter and not winter”. So true! People have grown tired of the rigors of the cold and snow and when they talk to their friends who have moved southward upon retirement and hear of the gentler climate that affords them the lifestyle to be outdoors and lead a more active lifestyle, it is just too alluring not to join them and hang up their snow boots and discard their snow shovels once and for all.

Current home values have fallen and there are those that want to wait for their home to appreciate in value before they sell. Hindsight is always 20/20. What would have been the best financial move for folks who knew they wanted to retire was to sell their home a few years ago while the market was up, even if they had to go into temporary housing before they relocated down south. Then as the market dropped, they could have bought now on the tail end of the downturn. For folks that say they want to wait for their home to go up in value, they need to be aware that chances are if their home price appreciates (especially in the north), so will the real estate where they are heading. In the meantime, while they wait, they aren’t getting on with their lives and they will continue to pay the high taxes and will endure further frigid winters where they are.

The real estate areas that will recover the best in this downturn are where two things are present; job growth and housing demand. Look to see where jobs are being created. Where employment is strong, that is where housing will lead out of this setback (Google and Williams Sonoma recently opened operations centers in our area). Where migration patterns are directing is where housing will recover the fastest. I know very few folks out of the 78 million Baby Boomers who are moving northward at retirement. Most folks I know are moving southward whether it is to Eastern Tennessee, the Carolinas or to Florida or anything in between. These cities and regions will see real estate demand increase which will positively affect pricing. Second, where jobs are being created and some of these jobs may be second careers for retirees, this too will positively affect pricing.

Bottom line – People need to think through this life step and:

1. Write out their goals of what they want to find;
2. Which community amenities are important;
3. What can they realistically afford;
4. And identify the “must have” city conveniences.

REMEMBER to purchase a property, whether it is a home or a lot in a community that has amenities complete and operational. In this market where concessions are being given on the best properties out there, why would you do otherwise? Do not buy in a start up community that has proposed amenities as there is too much risk in this economy. Buy into a community that has finished all their amenities or the bulk of the amenities are complete. If amenities are not important to you, then purchase in a community that has basic amenities where properties are generally less expensive. Do your homework or call upon NClakefront.com Realty who does this due diligence for our clients.

Get to know the area you are considering purchasing in. Learn about the tax structure of the state of which you are looking to relocate to. Know what is taxed and what is not. Find out about the medical care available through the local hospitals. Know about airport access, university opportunities, locations of restaurants and shopping centers, volunteerism and activities the area is known for. Your agent at NClakefront.com Realty has reports covering topics such as this and would be happy to furnish upon request.

The Parade of Homes on March 28th is an excellent opportunity for you to ‘try on’ the property for size for a weekend. There is a special Weekend Discovery Package on March 28th too – call for details. While you are here, meet others who live in the community, take a leisure cruise on the lake aboard our boat, get to know the area and envision living here and enjoying the North Carolina Lake Lifestyle.

In an economic storm such as this, the silver lining is opportunity. Know the facts, know your financial budget and have a plan. This is a time to see the forest through the trees and make smart decisions now that will lay a good foundation for you and your family going into the next decade.

RSVP at 800-517-5899. We look forward to talking with you today!

Jim Crow and Civil Rights in North Carolina

Jim Crow and Civil Rights in North Carolina

Jim Crow and Civil Rights in North Carolina

Segregation shaped black-white interactions in the post-Civil War North Carolina, where it reigned from the white supremacy revolt of 1898 until the 1960s. Jim Crow period was a crucial phase of race relations in American society. However, racial segregation had far deeper roots in the North Carolina past. Before the Civil War, slaveholders needed few regulations to isolate slaves and free people of color, who were kept apart by custom. After the Civil War, a white backlash against the former slaves began to legalize the customary distance between blacks and whites.

Planters intended to defy the emancipation guaranteed by the Thirteenth Amendment and exploit ex-slave workers. White employers flogged and even killed freed people who dared to assert their new liberties, even in the face of Union garrisons and Republican authority. While the state constitution of 1868 confirmed abolition and legitimated previous black and mixed-race births, it plainly stated that Black children and white children should study in different public schools (Franklin 73).

Despite the presence of federal and state militias, the Ku Klux Klan terrorized Republican voters and officeholders, black and white. In 1870, when conservative Democrats regained a legislative majority, Klansmen murdered 16 Republicans and whipped at least 121 (Franklin 88). An act of 1874 proclaimed that no white child could be apprenticed to a black adult. The amended state constitution in 1875 prohibited between white people and African-Americans and it reiterated the requirement for dual schools (Evans 55). The legislature soon established industrial and normal colleges for blacks, but it ignored the terror that drove thousands of them to Kansas and Indiana in 1879-80.

Blacks continued to vote and hold office in much of eastern North Carolina, backing “the Party of Lincoln” despite facing dangerous opposition (Anderson 37). For instance, between 1868 and 1889, fourteen black Republicans were elected to seventeen state house and six state senate terms from New Hanover County, home of Wilmington (Evans 54). Between 1874 and 1890, three blacks also won terms in Congress from the Second Congressional District, “a Republican and black stronghold.” (Anderson 34).

Legislators in 1892 proposed to segregate railway travel, as eight other Southern states already had done. Republican and Populist assemblymen opposed the enabling bill.

Oppression increased as black North Carolinians persevered. Their votes enabled Fusion men to gain 74 of the 120 General Assembly seats in 1894 and win the governorship in 1896, while electoral reforms passed by the Fusionist legislature helped blacks to regain numerous local offices (Anderson 93). By 1897, in Wilmington, four aldermen, an audit board member, a justice of the peace, the deputy clerk of court, and the coroner were black (Edmonds 162). Clearly, 1898 marked a turning point in Jim Crow. The election that year brought into relief not only extreme white racism, but also fallout from the legal disfranchisement of blacks in South Carolina (1895) and the Supreme Court’s “separate but equal” decision in Plessy v. Ferguson ( 1896) (Edmonds 165). Klansmen and White Supremacy Clubs frequently demonstrated at black and Fusion rallies, intimidating the crowds by a show of guns. In 1897-99 seven lynchings were reported in North Carolina, and racial intimidation and terrorism reached into even the most remote crossroads and towns during the fall of 1898 (Evans 87). Democrats reclaimed five of the state’s nine congressional seats; Republicans retained three seats, reelecting the nation’s only black congressman, George H. White, from the Second District (Evans 88). In state contests Democrats took ninety-four house and forty senate seats to the Republicans’ twenty-three (four black) and seven (one black) and Populists’ three and three (Evans 95).

During the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 legally selected Republicans were overthrown by white Democrats. As the result, Democrats established the government which was based upon white supremacy (Wilmington Race Riot 1). It symbolized the creation of a codified and brutal color line, one that would last through the first half of the twentieth century.

In 1899 lawmakers adopted voting restrictions based on the Louisiana model of a literacy test, poll tax, and grandfather clause. Scheduled for a referendum in 1900, the suffrage amendment promised significant reduction of the black electorate, thereby undermining a multiracial or working-class challenge to Democratic and white dominance. Adult illiteracy then was 40 percent for black males, compared to 20 percent for white males (Edmonds 180). Registrars did not expect or permit black men to read and explain a section of the state constitution as specified in the amendment. Nor could most blacks afford to pay poll taxes, for they earned only subsistence incomes. Virtually none had grandfathers who voted prior to January 1867, so, as descendants of freedmen, they lost by fiat the protection given to illiterate white men.

The assault on democratic citizenship quickened. At least two acts proscribed racially mixed fraternal orders and mental hospitals; five empowered the utilities commission to enforce Jim Crow in transport. In 1900 black leaders issued “An Address to the White People of North Carolina” protesting the imminent passage of the constitutional amendment that would disfranchise blacks (Edmonds 195).

Legal separation proceeded apace. The state required the board of education to operate all-black school districts and dictated that school librarians “fit up and maintain a separate place for the use of the colored people who may come to the library.” (Jim Crow Laws, Libraries). One statute allowed for relief and pension benefits to “fire companies composed exclusively of colored men.” (Edmonds 199). Furthermore, a “person of negro descent to the third generation, inclusive” was defined as black (Jim Craw Laws, Intermarriage). Any officer who failed to confine black and white prisoners separately should be considered guilty, according to an order on prisons. Three orders similarly charged operators of streetcars and trains.

The legal and informal contours of Jim Crow covered a wide domain. The restrictions betrayed white fears of black-Indian cooperation, black educational progress and competition for jobs, interracial sex, and blacks’ political dissent. To wit, the state reordered the segregation of Indians in jails, homes of the aged, and hospitals. It warranted a curriculum of only “practical agriculture and the mechanical arts and such branches of learning as relate thereto” for black colleges (Murray 332). Toilets had to be “lettered and marked in a distinct manner, so as to furnish separate facilities for white males, white females, colored males and colored females.” (Murray 339). Indeed, by the eve of World War I, almost every visible space had been separated. During the war, the state stopped the “organization of colored troops . . . where white troops are available, and while permitted to be organized, colored troops shall be under the command of white officers.” (Murray 342). Even a breach of the color line among convicts meant a fine or jail sentence for their jailers.

A sample of legislative acts from 1917 to 1945 can be useful to suggest the vagaries of Jim Crow. Of sixty-one Jim Crow statutes enacted in that period, three concern black aliens (Anderson 90). Education is the subject of nineteen, including a 1935 stipulation that “books shall not be interchangeable between the white and colored schools, but should continue to be used by the race first using them.” (Murray 331) An act detailing punishment for violations of the toilet restriction applies to all categories of labor. Seventeen measures relate to provisions for the handicapped, and fifteen cover buses and trains (Murray 338). Not until 1947 did the state restrict cemeteries, which had long been separated by tradition.

State permission to segregate the races resonated locally. Cities and towns tended to replicate the Winston-Salem housing pattern. Winston-Salem’s black residents had been segregated overwhelmingly into its southeastern corner by the 1920s. Black population clusters, always cordoned off by a main street, railroad track, or similar fixed barrier, shaped the social geography of every city and town. Hayti in Durham and Gilmer in Greensboro typified the urban ghettos (Woofter 67). In their segregated communities, veiled from white society, blacks forged a world of aspiration (Woofter 79).

Ordinances on accommodations (restaurants, theaters) and common spaces (auditoriums, stadiums) multiplied greatly. Lest there be trespassing, “White Only” and “Colored” signs policed entrances, exits, and seats. Banks, railroads, textile and tobacco factories, and other places of employment regularly exceeded statutory requirements. Tobacco plants in Durham, Reidsville, and Winston-Salem assigned “Negro and white workers to separate parts of buildings, or to different workrooms even when performing the same tasks, or to separate sides of the same room, or even to separate rows in the same room.” (Woofter 100).

Many African Americans struggled against Jim Crow laws and promoted dignity and liberty of Black people. For example, Charlotte Hawkins Brown whose grandparents were slaves made substantial contribution to the development of African American education and established the North Carolina State Federation of Negro Women’s Club (Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum 1).

The other examples include Murray and Mebane who were emblematic of the black men and women who survived Jim Crow and struggled for protection of African-American civil rights. In 1938 the University of North Carolina denied Pauli Murray admission for graduate study. Two years later at Petersburg, Virginia, she was arrested for sitting in the front seat of an interstate bus.

Blacks such as Murray and Mebane responded to Jim Crow by pursuing an array of community-building activities to soften segregation’s harshest edges and build autonomy and self-respect. Within “autonomous institutions”–including the family, education, religion, cultural expression, labor, business, and politics–blacks built a sense of hope. Consider post-riot Wilmington: by 1930 institutions within the black community included one of five hospitals in the city, two of thirteen homes for the elderly, two of nine cemeteries, twenty-eight of fifty-two churches and four of fourteen public schools (Wilmington Directory 700).

Black colleges and universities which were founded after the Civil War contributed substantially to black North Carolina education. There are eleven Black higher institutions in North Carolina (Historically Black Colleges and Universities 1). Among them are Bennett College, Barberia-Scottia College, North Carolina A&T State University and others. These colleges also cultivated ambition and self-esteem in their students.

In 1960 a group of Black students from North Carolina A&T University was not served during lunch; they protested against such discrimination by their refusal to leave the lunch counter. The Greensboro sit-ins were started by four African-American activists such as Ezell Blair, David Richmond, Joseph McNeil and Franklin McLain (Greensboro sit-ins, Timeline, 1). This non-violent protest has continued to take place in many cities. Thus, within the period of two months the lunch counter sit-ins took place in 54 cities in 9 states (Greensboro sit-ins, Timeline, 2). Later the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was organized to support Sit-Ins (Six Years of the SNCC 2).

Thus, Black activists participated in college boycotts and other forms of nonviolent direct action, helping to catalyze the emergent civil rights movement in North Carolina. Their fight on the home front to abolish Jim Crow bequeathed a significant legacy of hope to the next generation. Due to the courage and high aspirations of those Black Carolinians of the post-Civil War Era, African-Americans in North Carolina can enjoy civil rights and liberties which they have today. Individuals on both sides of the color line started to take each other seriously, with neither preordained stereotypes nor false etiquette.

The Best of North Carolina

The Best of North Carolina

There are many places to visit when you are visiting the southeastern region of the United States. With so many places to see and things to do, you need to narrow down the places you wish to explore.

Even though the charm of the south is not exclusive to one state or one area of the south, North Carolina is one southern state that offers an entire selection of southern hospitalities. The state is full of different kinds of people and cities, ranging from artsy to environmental to big city.

The capital of North Carolina is Raleigh. The area is generally known as Raleigh-Durham, and more generally the area it is within is known as the Triangle (it includes the city of Chapel Hill as well).

Along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Duke University the area is also home to many other well-known institutes of learning. And with all of these colleges, comes some fierce school spirit and team alliances at colligate sports games.

Also accompanying these places of learning are teachers, businessmen, lawyers, and very well-educated persons who are prepared for the workplace. The Triangle’s population is the “most educated” in the country, with the highest number of Ph.D.’s per capita.

There are many things to see while in the Triangle. This urbanized area has many sports events, art galleries, and history museums to see. North Carolina’s state capital offers a look into the urbanized, educated, and historic parts of the state.

The city of Wilmington is located on the coast of North Carolina. This beautiful historic city is very popular to people seeking a nice place by the beach. Its laidback atmosphere attracts many, as well as the city’s main university, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Wilmington’s historic downtown is the city’s main tourist attraction. The downtown is also the business center and just minutes away from the nearest beaches. Another famous attraction is the USS North Carolina (BB-55), which is a war museum. The battleship was used during WWII.

When you come to this beautiful port city you’ll find plenty of attractions dealing with the coast and marine life and historic United States.

The city of Asheville, located in the mountains of the western part of the state, has a population of about 70,000 people. This small city nestled in the mountains is perfectly situated for both mountain and city dwellers.

The city has a thriving arts and crafts community as well as a bustling small downtown. The city is known for its strong support and connection to the independent arts and music scene as well its popular outdoors adventure crowds.

While in this quaint and vibrant mountain city you can visit the Biltmore House and Estate, the largest private residence in the United States, or you can visit the Thomas Wolfe House, site of the famous early 20th-century author’s childhood home. If you’d rather have some adventure, then you can just go kayaking, mountain biking or take a hike on one of the many trials along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A hub for finance and business, Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 20th largest city in the United States. The city was named after wife of the king of England, King George III. Charlotte is also known as the “Queen City.”

There are many places to see and many things to do in this large metropolitan city. The city is a pretty typical large city – with lots of cultural, historical and sports events to attend.

Amber Singleton is a writer for The Lion and The Rose Bed & Breakfast, located just minutes from downtown Asheville, N.C. Just three miles from the Biltmore Estate, this Asheville bed and breakfast is a place to indulge romantic fantasies and relish in the comfort of luxury. With only five guest rooms, The Lion and The Rose Bed & Breakfast guarantees privacy and intimacy.

Strategic Thinking Introduction

North Carolina is found in the South eastern part of the country. It has one hundred counties, and was formerly known as the Carolina during the time when the US was still a British colony. The state has been associated with a number of positive aspects in the past. For instance, the first human beings to fly- the Wright brothers hailed from this state. In modern times, the state North Carolina has contributed a lot to the overall success of the United States. As of 2007, North Carolina had a population of about nine million and sixty one hundred thousand. This state is also known for the high population of Americas Indians in the entire country. The essay shall examine the economic, political, educational  and social issues facing this state currently. (Lefler, 2008)

Political situation

North Carolina has always been associated with soft spoken or plain speaking politicians. The State’s citizens tend to avoid electing governors who seem to have too much air about them. They are a rather contradictory lot; the state has elected a very conservative Senator – Jesse Helms as their representatives five times yet at the same time elected a progressive candidate such as Jim Hunt as governor. In the past North Carolina was considered as a poor-person’s state. However, the state currently wants to and has improved this image. For instance, through their politicians and their own efforts, the residents of this state have established better roads for themselves. They have recently become a basketball hub and have built numerous skyscrapers for themselves.  However, despite these common goals among members of the state, there are still some differences between citizens there. There is an inherent division between the two types of people in that area. (Kersey and Coble, 2008)

It is essential to understand the history behind the state to know why there are such differing elections in the area. In the mid twentieth century, most individuals within this state had adopted a business like approach to politics. They chose representatives that took up educational and economic interests of all persons in the state at heart. However, things changed in the year 1948. At that time, the politicians who stood for pro-activeness lost to more conservative individuals. This was the point at which the issue of race began dominating North Carolina’s politics. Some voters believed that their representatives should represent white domination alone. On the other hand, others believed in good governance for all people in the state. This is what brought about the division in opinion between the two groups.

However, currently, the election of a progressive individual such as Jim Hunt has only been possible because he represents the interests of both of these differing groups. He holds progressive ideas but covers them up with some conservative social values. This is the reason why he has managed to represent the State as a governor for four times. Those individuals who hold the latter view have chosen this conservative Senator. This explains why North Carolina’s political scene may seem complex. The differences witnessed today are only an indication of some differences that existed in the past. They have been brought forward through generations and have shaped the political landscape today. (Department of the Secretary of State, 2007)

It is also imperative to understand the racial composition of this area in order to understand why the state votes the way it does. In the year 2006, statistics indicated that minority groups made up the largest part of the population in over seventy six towns. Consequently, these groups may be responsible for electing progressive representatives as representatives. It was found that African Americans represent the largest ethnic group in seventy four towns. The next ethnic minority group are the American Indians. Additionally, North Carolina is now registering an increasing number of Hispanics.

This state is currently experiencing a boom of migrants. The reason far this is that other groups have been relocating from other states. In the year 2000, there were about one million migrants from other parts of the US who settled in North Carolina. It should be noted that most migrants normally settle in large towns; small towns seem not to receive these groups well.

Economic situation

The state of the economy in North Carolina is neither good or bad ion the state. As of early 2008 the state was ranked twenty fifth in the cost of living index. This means that taxes, utilities and housing cost there are average in comparison to other states in the US. Consequently, there is a need to make some changes in the governance systems in order to improve the state’s rankings.

However, when the economic performance of North Carolina is considered individually (without comparing it to other states in the country) it can be found that in the year 2008, the state’s economy has not been doing as well as it did in the previous two years i.e. there is an economic slow down in the state. (Fleer, 2008)

Experts and economists alike have been perplexed by this slowdown. Some of them assert that it could be due to the sectors under consideration. The automobile and housing sectors do not take precedence in these surveys. If this was the case, then the state would have performed relatively well over the past two years. The low dollar has caused a relative increase in the export sector thus affecting the automobile industry. Additionally, most companies have minimized their inventories in order to cushion themselves against the low dollar. Job loses are actually being experienced in these two sectors; housing and automobile. If  these sectors were regulated, then the state would have maintained its good performance

The State of North Carolina is currently among the top forty percent of all other states in terms of economic growth. The issue of the economic perforce is quite important to the state because it affects budgetary allocations. This good performance is quite encouraging and may go a long way in ensuring that the state maintains that performance.

However, despite these positive reports, there are still a number of negative issues that North Carolina is facing. For instance it has been reported that some of the small towns in the state are having problems covering their own operations. For instance, they take up the largest amount of resources on issues such as

Planning
Street maintenance
Capital improvements
Government operations

These small towns end up depending on grants or other types of intergovernmental transfers. The utility and property taxes in small town are not sufficient to cover some of their most pressing needs and this leaves a lot of room for discrepancies. (Jones, 2007)

Additionally, there are some issues with the way North Carolina  runs its water and sewerage system. There are a number of towns that have registered leaks, infiltration and leaks in their piping systems. This could probably be because of the autonomy granted to towns to administer their own sewerage systems. Just twelve percent of the towns in North Carolina have state imposed systems. The rest have to struggle to meet their own needs.

Another interesting aspect about North Carolina in 2008 was the fact that the state has encompassed agribusiness. Farming is crucial part of the state’s economic activities. Consequently, the state has decided to streamline the chain between the framing process, the delivery system and the processing aspect too. This process of streamlining these processes is what is known as agribusiness. The issue of agribusiness could be part of the reason why the state’s economic situation has been placed as top forty percent.

Educational situation

North Carolina is slowly but surely becoming an educational hub in the US. The State boasts of a large number of colleges and universities. Most of them are currently recruiting candidates from different parts of the country and the world. These include North Carolina AT&T University, Duke University, Campbell University and Winston State University. These are just some of the fifty-eight universities in the regions. (Kersey and Coble, 2008)

However, parents in the state have been complaining about the rising cost of higher education as this is something that keeps rising annually. In response to this, some colleges have introduced their own personal initiatives to assist parents there. For instance, some universities have placed a cap on tuition costs for low income households or parents who earn less than thirty thousand dollars annually. The federal state has responded to these rising costs by introducing a grant system for automatic sponsorship. The latter applies to needy but smart students.

Conclusion

North Carolina is faring relatively well economically. However, its economic performance in 2008 has undergone recession over the past two years. The housing and automobile sector have been affected by low dollar performance. North Carolina’s political situation is a rather complex because their voting patterns are quite unpredictable. This is due to rising immigration and a history of business-based politics in the sixties. Lastly, the field of education has been plagued by rising costs. In response to this, the federal state brought in a sponsorship program.

Tax Benefits of North Carolina and South Carolina

Tax Benefits of North Carolina and South Carolina

North Carolina

North Carolina has an extremely user friendly tax system. For more information on North Carolina taxes, visit www.dornc.com is easy to use and complete with many different FAQ’s, and the toll-free information line (877-252-3052) has a great wealth of information for individuals looking for help with their taxes. In addition, North Carolina has steadily been increasing the number of filing options that can be carried out online. There are walk-in centers where tax-payers can go for assistance, located in many of the major cities.

North Carolina has a sales tax rate of 7%, except for Mecklenburg County, which has a rate of 7.5%, due to a higher local tax rate. Property taxes are based on varying millage rates, depending on the town, or municipality you live in. Great savings can be found here. In my “Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Best Place to Live in the Carolinas”, I compare real estate taxes for 3 different priced homes, in 90 different towns in North and South Carolina.

North Carolina has 3 brackets for income tax, starting at 6% of the first ,750 and moving up to 7.75% of anything over ,000. Deductions in North Carolina for state income taxes are as follows: the standard deduction is ,000 for singles, ,000 for a married joint return. The public pension exclusion is ,000 per taxpayer. If you’re receiving both public and private pensions, the private pension exclusion is ,000 per taxpayer. Social Security benefits are fully exempt. In lieu of a state sales tax on automobiles, North Carolina collects a 3% Highway Use Tax, based on the assessed value of the vehicle.

South Carolina

According to the US Bureau of the census, South Carolina has one of the lowest per capita tax rates in the country. Maybe this is why so many people appreciate the Palmetto State. One of the perks of living and raising a family in South Carolina is that parents, guardians, or students can receive partial credit on tuition fees paid to a South Carolina university, up to 0. Another favorable exclusion South Carolina tax payers enjoy is that the first 0,000 valuation of a home is exempt from paying school taxes. For more information on South Carolina taxes, visit www.sctax.org, or call 803-898-5464.

South Carolina has a sales tax rate of 5%, but local governments can approve a local tax as well. The maximum for that addition is 2%, so the maximum sales tax in South Carolina is 7%. As in North Carolina, property taxes are based on a millage rate, which varies by state and municipality. In my “Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Best Place to Live in the Carolinas”, I compare real estate taxes for 3 different prices homes, in 90 different towns in North and South Carolina. One of the perks of retiring to South Carolina is that there is a ,000 homestead exemption on property tax for residents 65 and older.

South Carolina has 6 income tax brackets. They start at 2.5% of the first ,280 earned, and rise to 7% of anything over ,400. Exclusions include a public pension exclusion of ,000 for residents under 65, and ,000 for residents over 65. The same holds true for private pensions. South Carolina does not tax Social Security benefits.

Both states have a great quality of life, and favorable tax climates. Overall, South Carolina is cheaper than North Carolina. People interested in moving to either state should consult the sources of information listed, as well as a tax professional.

North Pole

North Pole

Precise definition

See also: Polar motion

The Earth’s axis of rotation and hence the position of the North Pole was commonly believed to be fixed (relative to the surface of the Earth) until, in the 18th century, the mathematician Leonhard Euler predicted that the axis might “wobble” slightly. Around the beginning of the 20th century astronomers noticed a small apparent “variation of latitude,” as determined for a fixed point on Earth from the observation of stars. Part of this variation could be attributed to a wandering of the Pole across the Earth’s surface, by a range of a few meters. The wandering has several periodic components and an irregular component. The component with a period of about 435 days is identified with the 8 month wandering predicted by Euler and is now called the Chandler wobble after its discoverer. The exact point of intersection of the Earth’s axis and the Earth’s surface, at any given moment, is called the “instantaneous pole”, but because of the “wobble” this cannot be used as a definition of a fixed North Pole (or South Pole) when metre-scale precision is required.

It is desirable to tie the system of Earth coordinates (latitude, longitude, and elevations or orography) to fixed landforms. Of course, given plate tectonics and isostasy, there is no system in which all geographic features are fixed. Yet the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service and the International Astronomical Union have defined a framework called the International Terrestrial Reference System.

Expeditions

Pre-1900

As early as the sixteenth century, many eminent people correctly believed that the North Pole was in a sea, which in the nineteenth century was called the Polynia or Open Polar Sea. It was therefore hoped that passage could be found through ice floes at favorable times of the year. Several expeditions set out to find the way, generally with whaling ships, already commonly used in the cold northern latitudes.

One of the earliest expeditions to set out with the explicit intention of reaching the North Pole was that of British naval officer William Edward Parry, who in 1827 reached latitude 8245 North. In 1871 the Polaris expedition, an American attempt on the Pole led by Charles Francis Hall, ended in disaster. An 18791881 expedition commanded by US naval officer George Washington DeLong also ended tragically when their ship, the USS Jeanette, was crushed by ice. Over half the crew, including DeLong, were lost.

Nansen’s ship Fram in the Arctic ice

In April 1895 the Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen struck out for the Pole on skis after leaving Nansen’s icebound ship Fram. The pair reached latitude 8614 North before they abandoned the attempt and went southwards, eventually reaching Franz Josef Land.

In 1897 Swedish engineer Salomon August Andre and two companions tried to reach the North Pole in the hydrogen balloon rnen (“Eagle”), but were stranded 300 km north of Kvitya, the northeasternmost part of the Svalbard Archipelago, and perished on this lonely island. In 1930 the remains of this expedition were found by the Norwegian Bratvaag Expedition.

The Italian explorer Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi and Captain Umberto Cagni of the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina) sailed the converted whaler Stella Polare from Norway in 1899. On March 11, 1900 Cagni led a party over the ice and reached latitude 86 34 on April 25, setting a new record by beating Nansen’s result of 1895 by 35 to 40 kilometres. Cagni barely managed to return back to the camp, remaining there until June 23. On August 16 the Stella Polare left Rudolf Island heading south and the expedition returned to Norway.

19001940

The American explorer Frederick Albert Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908 with two Inuit men, Ahwelah and Etukishook, but he was unable to produce convincing proof and his claim is not widely accepted.

Peary’s sledge party “at the North Pole,” 1909. From left: Ooqueah, Ootah, Henson, Egingwah, Seeglo.

The conquest of the North Pole was for many years credited to American Navy engineer Robert Peary, who claimed to have reached the Pole on April 6, 1909, accompanied by American Matthew Henson and four Inuit men named Ootah, Seeglo, Egingwah, and Ooqueah. However, Peary’s claim remains controversial. The party that accompanied Peary on the final stage of the journey included no one who was trained in navigation and could independently confirm his own navigational work, which some claim to have been particularly sloppy as he approached the Pole.

The distances and speeds that Peary claimed to have achieved once the last support party turned back seem incredible to many people, almost three times that which he had accomplished up to that point. Peary’s account of a journey to the Pole and back while traveling along the direct line the only strategy that is consistent with the time constraints that he was facing is contradicted by Henson’s account of tortuous detours to avoid pressure ridges and open leads.

The British explorer Wally Herbert, initially a supporter of Peary, researched Peary’s records in 1989 and concluded that they must have been falsified and that Peary had not reached the Pole. Support for Peary came again in 2005, however, when the British explorer Tom Avery and four companions recreated the outward portion of Peary’s journey with replica wooden sleds and Canadian Eskimo Dog teams, reaching the North Pole in 36 days, 22 hours nearly five hours faster than Peary. Avery writes on his web site that “The admiration and respect which I hold for Robert Peary, Matthew Henson and the four Inuit men who ventured North in 1909, has grown enormously since we set out from Cape Columbia. Having now seen for myself how he travelled across the pack ice, I am more convinced than ever that Peary did indeed discover the North Pole.”

The first claimed flight over the Pole was made on May 9, 1926 by US naval officer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett in a Fokker tri-motor aircraft. Although verified at the time by the US Navy and a committee of the National Geographic Society, this claim has since been disputed.

The first undisputed sighting of the Pole was on May 12, 1926 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his American sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth from the airship Norge. Norge, though Norwegian owned, was designed and piloted by the Italian Umberto Nobile. The flight started from Svalbard and crossed the icecap to Alaska. Nobile, along with several scientists and crew from the Norge, overflew the Pole a second time on May 24, 1928 in the airship Italia. The Italia crashed on its return from the Pole, with the loss of half the crew.

19402000

In May 1945 an RAF Lancaster of the Aries expedition became the first Commonwealth aircraft to overfly the North Geographic and North Magnetic Poles. The plane was piloted by David Cecil McKinley of the Royal Air Force. It carried an 11-man crew, with Kenneth C. Maclure of the Royal Canadian Air Force in charge of all scientific observations. In 2006, Maclure was honoured with a spot in the Canadian Aviation Hall Of Fame.

Discounting Peary’s disputed claim, the first men to set foot at the North Pole were, according to some sources, a Soviet Union party. These are variously described as including Pavel Gordiyenko (or Geordiyenko) and three or five others, or Aleksandr Kuznetsov and 23 others, who landed a plane (or planes) there on April 23, 1948. According to Antarctica.org, three Li-2 planes landed, carrying a total of seven men.

On May 3, 1952, U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher and Lieutenant William P. Benedict, along with scientist Albert P. Crary, landed a modified C-47 Skytrain at the North Pole. Some sources consider this (rather than the Soviet mission) to be the first ever landing at the Pole.

USS Skate at the North Pole, 1959

The United States Navy submarine USS Nautilus (SSN-571) crossed the North Pole on August 3, 1958, and on March 17, 1959, the USS Skate (SSN-578) surfaced at the Pole, becoming the first naval vessel to do so.

Setting aside Peary’s claim, the first confirmed surface conquest of the North Pole was that of Ralph Plaisted, Walt Pederson, Gerry Pitzl and Jean Luc Bombardier, who traveled over the ice by snowmobile and arrived on April 19, 1968. The United States Air Force independently confirmed their position.

On April 6, 1969, Wally Herbert and companions Allan Gill, Roy Koerner and Kenneth Hedges of the British Trans-Arctic Expedition became the first men to reach the North Pole on foot (albeit with the aid of dog teams and air drops). They continued on to complete the first surface crossing of the Arctic Ocean and by its longest axis, Barrow, Alaska to Svalbard a feat that has never been repeated. Because of suggestions of Plaisted’s use of air transport, some sources classify Herbert’s expedition as the first confirmed to reach the North Pole over the ice surface by any means.

Memorial in honor of icebreaker Arktika conquest of the North Pole in 1977 in hall of museum of local lore of the Murmansk region

On August 17, 1977, the Soviet nuclear powered icebreaker Arktika completed the first surface vessel journey to the North Pole.

In 1982 Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Charles Burton became the first people to cross the Arctic Ocean in a single season. They departed from Cape Crozier, Ellesmere Island, on 17 February 1982 and arrived at the geographic North Pole on 10 April 1982. They travelled on foot and skidoo. From the Pole, they travelled south towards Svalbard but, due to the unstable nature of the ice, ended their crossing at the ice edge after drifting south on an ice floe for 99 days. They were eventually able to walk to their expedition ship “MV Benjamin Bowring” and boarded it on 4 August 1982 at position 80:31N 00:59W. As a result of this journey, which formed a section of the three-year Transglobe Expedition 19791982, Fiennes and Burton became the first people to complete a circumnavigation of the world via both North and South Poles, by surface travel alone. This achievement remains unchallenged to this day.

On September 7, 1991, the German research vessel RV Polarstern and the Swedish ice breaker Oden reached the North Pole as the first conventional powered vessels.. Both scientific parties and crew took oceanographic and geological samples and had a common tug of war and a football game on an ice floe. Polarstern again reached the pole exactly 10 years later together with the USCGC Healy.

21st century

USS Charlotte at the North Pole in 2005

In recent years, journeys to the North Pole by air (landing by helicopter or on a runway prepared on the ice) or by icebreaker have become relatively routine, and are even available to small groups of tourists through adventure holiday companies.

In 2005, the United States Navy submarine USS Charlotte (SSN-766) surfaced through 155 cm (61 inches) of ice at the North Pole and spent 18 hours there.

In April 2007, Dutch performance artist Guido van der Werve performed a work of art at the North Pole. By standing exactly on the Pole for 24 hours and turning slowly clockwise (the earth is turning counterclockwise), just by following his own shadow, Van der Werve literally did not turn with the world for one day. This performance is called: ‘nummer negen [Dutch for Number Nine], the day I didn’t turn with the world’. Van der Werve time-lapsed the 24 hours to 9 minutes.

In July 2007, British endurance swimmer Lewis Gordon Pugh completed a 1 km swim at the North Pole. His feat, undertaken to highlight the effects of climate change, took place in clear water that had opened up between the ice floes. His later attempt to paddle a kayak to the North Pole in late 2008, following the erroneous prediction of clear water to the Pole, was stymied when his expedition found itself stuck in thick ice after only three days. The expedition was then abandoned.

A 2007 episode of the BBC motoring show Top Gear, in which the presenters were described as journeying to the “North Pole,” was in fact an expedition to the 1996 position of the North Magnetic Pole.

2007 descent to North Pole seabed

Main article: Arktika 2007

On August 2, 2007, a Russian VASU[clarification needed] made the first ever manned descent to the ocean bottom at the North Pole, to a depth of 4.3 km, as part of a research programme in support of Russia’s 2001 territorial claim to a large swathe of the Arctic Ocean. The descent took place in two MIR submersibles and was led by Soviet and Russian polar explorer Arthur Chilingarov. In a symbolic act, the Russian flag was placed on the seabed at the exact position of the Pole.

The expedition is the latest in a decades-long series of moves by Russia intended to show that it is the dominant influence in the Arctic. The warming Arctic climate and summer retreat of sea ice there has suddenly turned the attention of countries from China to the United States toward the top of the world, where resources and shipping routes may soon be exploitable.

Day and night

See also Midnight sun and Polar night

At the North Pole, the sun is permanently above the horizon during the summer months and permanently below the horizon during the winter months. Sunrise is just before the vernal equinox (around March 19); the sun then takes three months to reach its highest point of about 23 elevation at the summer solstice (around June 21), after which time it begins to sink, reaching sunset just after the autumnal equinox (around September 24). When the sun is visible in the polar sky, it appears to move in a clockwise circle above the horizon. This circle gradually rises from near the horizon just after the vernal equinox to its maximum elevation (in degrees) above the horizon at summer solstice and then sinks back toward the horizon before sinking below it at the autumnal equinox.

A civil twilight period of about two weeks occurs before sunrise and after sunset, a nautical twilight period of about five weeks occurs before sunrise and after sunset and an astronomical twilight period of about seven weeks occurs before sunrise and after sunset.

These effects are caused by a combination of the Earth’s axial tilt and its revolution around the sun. The direction of the Earth’s axial tilt, as well as its angle relative to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the sun, remains very nearly constant over the course of a year (both change very slowly over long time periods). At northern midsummer the North Pole is facing towards the sun to its maximum extent. As the year progresses and the Earth moves around the sun, the North Pole gradually turns away from the sun until at midwinter it is facing away from the Sun to its maximum extent. A similar sequence is observed at the South Pole, with a six-month time difference.

Time

In most places on Earth, local time is determined by longitude, such that the time of day is more-or-less synchronised to the position of the sun in the sky (for example, at midday the sun is roughly at its highest). This line of reasoning fails at the North Pole, where the sun rises and sets only once per year, and all lines of longitude, and hence all time zones, converge. There is no permanent human presence at the North Pole, and no particular time zone has been assigned. Polar expeditions may use any time zone that is convenient, such as GMT, or the time zone of the country they departed from.

Climate

Arctic shrinkages of 2007 compared to 2005 and also compared to the 1979-2000 average.

The North Pole is significantly warmer than the South Pole because it lies at sea level in the middle of an ocean (which acts as a reservoir of heat), rather than at altitude in a continental land mass.

Winter (January) temperatures at the North Pole can range from about 43 C (45 F) to 26 C (15 F), perhaps averaging around 34 C (30 F). Summer temperatures (June, July and August) average around the freezing point (0 C, 32 F).

The sea ice at the North Pole is typically around two or three meters thick, though there is considerable variation and occasionally the movement of floes exposes clear water. Studies have shown that the average ice thickness has decreased in recent years. Many attribute this decrease to global warming, though this conclusion is disputed by some. Reports have also predicted that within a few decades the Arctic Ocean will be entirely free of ice in the summer months. This may have significant commercial implications; see “Territorial Claims,” below.

Flora and fauna

Polar bears are believed rarely to travel beyond about 82 North owing to the scarcity of food, though tracks have been seen in the vicinity of the North Pole, and a 2006 expedition reported sighting a polar bear just one mile (1.6 km) from the Pole. The ringed seal has also been seen at the Pole, and Arctic foxes have been observed less than 60 km away at 8940 N.

Birds seen at or very near the Pole include the Snow Bunting, Northern Fulmar and Black-legged Kittiwake, though some bird sightings may be distorted by the tendency of birds to follow ships and expeditions.

Fish have been seen in the waters at the North Pole, but these are probably few in number. A member of the Russian team that descended to the North Pole seabed in August 2007 reported seeing no sea creatures living there. However, it was later reported that a sea anemone had been scooped up from the seabed mud by the Russian team and that video footage from the dive showed unidentified shrimps and amphipods.

Territorial claims to the North Pole and Arctic regions

Main article: Territorial claims in the Arctic

Under international law, no country currently owns the North Pole or the region of the Arctic Ocean surrounding it. The five surrounding Arctic countries, Russia, Canada, Norway, Denmark (via Greenland), and the United States (via Alaska), are limited to a 200-nautical-mile (370 km; 230 mi) Exclusive Economic Zone around their coasts, and the area beyond that is administered by the International Seabed Authority.

Upon ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country has a ten year period to make claims to extend its 200 mile zone. Norway (ratified the convention in 1996), Russia (ratified in 1997), Canada (ratified in 2003) and Denmark (ratified in 2004) have all launched projects to base claims that certain Arctic sectors should belong to their territories.

Cultural associations

In some Western cultures, the geographic North Pole is the residence of Santa Claus. Canada Post has assigned postal code H0H 0H0 to the North Pole (referring to Santa’s traditional exclamation of “Ho-ho-ho!”).

This association reflects an age-old esoteric mythology of Hyperborea that posits the North Pole, the otherworldly world-axis, as the abode of God and superhuman beings (see Joscelyn Godwin, Arktos: The Polar Myth). The popular figure of the pole-dwelling Santa Claus thus functions as an esoteric archetype of spiritual purity and transcendence (). As Henry Corbin has documented, the North Pole plays a key part in the cultural worldview of esoteric Sufism and Iranian mysticism. “The Orient sought by the mystic, the Orient that cannot be located on our maps, is in the direction of the north, beyond the north.” The Pole is also identified with a mysterious mountain in the Arctic Ocean, called Mount Qaf (cf. Rupes Nigra), whose ascent, like Dante’s climbing of the Mountain of Purgatory, represents the pilgrim’s progress through spiritual states. In Iranian theosophy, the heavenly Pole, the focal point of the spiritual ascent, acts as a magnet to draw beings to its “palaces ablaze with immaterial matter.”
Fantasy flights often refer to a flight to the North Pole for these same reasons.
