NCAA Football – Oklahoma Sooners defeat Connecticut on Fiesta Bowl 2011

NCAA Football – Oklahoma Sooners defeat Connecticut on Fiesta Bowl 2011

The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is a well-known field for the Oklahoma Sooners. They now the town, they now the locker rooms, they know the tunnel that leads to the field. They have been there a couple of times; they just haven’t been able to win this thing for a long time. As a matter of fact, the last time the Sooners won the Fiesta Bowl was back in 1976 when they defeated Wyoming. That all came to an end on Saturday during the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners brought in their A-game into the desert and crushed the UConn Huskies by 48-20. The Sooners offensive was simply brilliant and despite putting on a good fight in their first ever Fiesta Bowls, The Sooners where too much of a team for the Huskies that went home without the title. The Oklahoma Sooners where 5-0 in BCS Bowls before they made their trip to Arizona to face Connecticut, a team that at 8-5 for the season and coming from the Big East, had struggled to pull itself into the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. Taking a look back at what had happened during the previous trips to the BCS Bowls, Oklahoma couldn’t help to get that “here we go again feeling”. Let’s take a quick look at the numbers for a second. In 2009 the Oklahoma Sooners had the privilege to play for the BCS National Championship Bowl against the Florida. The Gator won by 24-14 in this exciting game. The year before that, the Sooners faced WVU in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. The West Virginia Mountaineers put on a baffling 48-28 upset against the Sooners. In 2007 the Sooners will again take a go at the Fiesta Bowl. For the first time in many years, the Sooners would take a chance to win the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State, but the Boise State Broncos proved to be a stronger team and defeated the Sooners in an intense 43-42 smack down. Before that it was the 2005 Orange Bowl. The Sooners were playing the USC Trojans and despite holding on a great season record, the No.1 ranked team in the nation, the Trojans, won the game 19-55. In 2004 the Oklahoma Sooners played the Sugar Bowls against LSU. Head Coach Nick Saban and the Tigers took an important 14-21 win over the Sooners. So yes, that was 0-5 for the Sooners in BCS Bowls and that was certainly hurting not only the fans but head coach Bob Stoops as he had been in front of the Sooners every one of those failing years. The Sooners remembered all these games before they played UConn on Saturday. And they made the Huskies pay. The Sooners quarterback, Landry Jones, finally emerged from under the shadow of Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and played out an extraordinary game. He went for a school-bowl record 429 yards completing 34 of 49 for three touchdowns and one interception. It’s got to feel good to finally live to its expectations. In 2007 and 2008 the Sooners arrived to Arizona as the favorite. They left a bit embarrassed and disappointed. This time around, the Sooners took the win back to Norman, Oklahoma where thousands of fans where waiting for them.

Oklahoma Sooners Football Tickets – See The Most Unexpected Bcs Team Live

Category : Region IV

Oklahoma Sooners Football Tickets – See The Most Unexpected Bcs Team Live

Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always in demand in and around Norman, but the 2006 season carried expectations as low as any season in recent history. The Sooners suffered one crushing loss before the season began, and suffered two more once the season started. However, the Sooners are once again in a BCS bowl game, and almost no one expected this. It’s a credit to the coaching ability of Bob Stoops, and other factors are also responsible for this surprisingly successful season. We’ll examine the reasons for this great season below, and Sooner nation will once again be out in full force in January.

Obstacles Presented

The Sooners seemed to be destined for a disappointing season even before fall practice got into full swing. QB Rhett Bomar, a returning starter and a player many expected to be among the nation’s elite, was kicked off the team after it was discovered that he accepted money for what amounted to a “no-show” job, as it was alleged. Not only did the Sooners apparently lack depth at the position, but given the timing of this potential disaster, the team was basically put in a very difficult position on offense.

Two other serious problems arose during the season. The first was a highly-controversial loss to Oregon, which occurred when officials basically botched a late-game call that all-but handed the Ducks a victory. The Sooners play a challenging non-conference schedule with regularity, and this loss angered everyone from the coach to the president of the university, and it was quietly acknowledged by many that the Sooners had been robbed in that game.

Finally, the Sooners’ superstar, RB Adrian Peterson, was lost to injury when he broke his collarbone diving into the end zone after another of his patented scintillating runs. Peterson was the most feared offensive player in the Big 12, and perhaps the country, and most teams simply don’t overcome a loss like that and continue to win. Although Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are always hard to find, Peterson by himself was the reason many fans came out to see Oklahoma play.

Perseverance

As a credit to the program, each of these obstacles was met and handled with aplomb. New QB Paul Thompson, who had been expected to play WR this season, grew into his new position with what appears to be excellent coaching. Thompson has thrown for almost 2,500 yards and 20 TD’s, and finished the regular season with a QB rating of 144.56. If that isn’t great coaching, then there’s no such thing.

The Sooners also refused to fold after the Oregon debacle, even though they did suffer a tough loss to Texas two weeks later, and were sitting with a mediocre 3-2 record as of October 8. Many teams would simply fold at that point, but all Oklahoma has done since is run the table, including wins over three ranked teams and a Big 12 title. Again, credit needs to go to the coaching staff for this continued focus.

Finally, the loss of Peterson did not ruin the season. New starter Allen Patrick has racked up 700 yards in only about half a season, and he has kept the running game at Oklahoma churning. Included in his body of work are games where he rushed for 173 yards at Texas A&M and 163 yards at Oklahoma State. The result is teams still have to fear Oklahoma’s running game.

Results

The results speak for themselves. Oklahoma finds itself once again in a BCS bowl game with an 11-2 record, and a date with undefeated Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. This is perhaps Stoops’ best coaching job, and Oklahoma Sooners football tickets are going to be impossible to find for yet another big-time bowl game.

The Oklahoma Land Races of the 19th Century

Category : Region IV

The Oklahoma Land Races of the 19th Century

Considering the inflated prices that real estate is experiencing almost universally today, it seems incredible that the US government ever sold land off at pennies per acre and even gave it away for free, but that’s exactly what happened to much of Oklahoma in the late 1800s. What was once reserved as Indian Territory was opened up to white settlers in the biggest, most chaotic land grab in American history.

Despite the solemn commitment Congress made in 1828 to a number of Native American tribes that the area eventually becoming Oklahoma would forever be reserved as Indian Territory, and land they had been forced to occupy after being driven out of their ancestral lands, Congress reneged on that promise. Forcing the Cherokees to put up their Oklahoma land for sale, and to accept a paltry ,000,000, the US government claimed back 7,000,000 acres. The tribes who occupied the lands were known as the Five Civilized Tribes; the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole – who allied themselves with the South during the Civil War.

Following the war, the US government regarded these tribes as defeated enemies. This animosity, combined with increasing pressure to open up the Indian Territory to white settlers, resulted in literally dirt cheap Oklahoma land for sale, and eventually, free land to whomever could claim it first.

The newly available Oklahoma land for sale was sold first-come, sold by bid, or won by lottery, or by means other than a run. The settlers, no matter how they acquired occupancy, purchased Oklahoma land for sale from the United States Land Office. The Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 was the most prominent of the land runs, although there were several others.

Between 1889 and 1895 there were seven land races in Oklahoma. By the time of the land rush of 1893, the rush for the Cherokee Strip, America was languishing in the worst economic depression it had ever seen. The US government hoped that holding land races for free land, rather than offering Oklahoma land for sale would stimulate the economy by creating farms and crops at a low cost.

This was one of the factors that swelled the number of hopeful land-racers that day. Many would be disappointed. There were only 42,000 homesteads – far too few to accommodate the estimated 100,000 who raced for land that day. Additionally, many of the “Boomers” – those who waited for the cannon’s boom before rushing into the land claim – found that most of the choice plots of Oklahoma land had already been claimed by “Sooners” who had snuck into the land claim area before the race began.

The impact of the land rush was immediate, transforming the land almost overnight. Unlike Rome, many cities of Oklahoma were built in a day. William Willard Howard recorded his observations of the Oklahoma land races in Harper’s Weekly in May of 1889. He said “At twelve o’clock on Monday, April 22d, the resident population of Guthrie was nothing; before sundown it was at least ten thousand.

In that time streets had been laid out, town lots staked off, and steps taken toward the formation of a municipal government. . . Never before in the history of the West has so large a number of people been concentrated in one place in so short a time. To the conservative Eastern man, who is wont to see cities grow by decades, the settlement of Guthrie was magical beyond belief; to the quick-acting resident of the West, it was merely a particularly lively town-site speculation.”

Oklahoma land for sale (http://remax-oklahoma.com) has an intriguing history, including being the prize for thousands of racers. The author Art Gib is a freelance writer.

The Sooners flew relatively under the radar in the first part of the season until the BCS named them the top team in the country in the first BCS rankings of the season. They immediately relinquished the top spot, however, with a loss to Missouri and then fell to Texas A&M a couple of weeks later. Nevertheless, the Sooners beat out Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Game to earn a shot at the Big 12 Championship and came through with a win over Nebraska. Connecticut heads to the Fiesta Bowl as the Big East’s unranked champion. They beat South Florida in the final game of the season to win the Big East Championship and the right to play in a BCS bowl game. This will mark the Huskies’ first ever BCS bowl appearance in the program’s brief FBS history.

Make the defense respect the pass. Oklahoma ranks 13th in pass efficiency defense (51st in pass defense), but are 62nd in rushing defense, giving up 151.8 yards per game. Big East Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Todman has rushed for over 1,500 yards and has scored 14 touchdowns. He’s the nation’s fifth leading rusher and it’s a good bet the Sooners will key in on the running game to force quarterback Zach Frazer to win the game with his arm. Frazer doesn’t have to throw for 400 yards, but he has to make the Sooners defense respect his ability to hit short- and mid-range passes to move the ball and the chains. If he’s able to do that, holes will open for Todman and the running game. Oklahoma. This game may be a little closer than a lot of people are expecting. Oklahoma has been here before and the experience is not an unfamiliar one for the Sooners. Connecticut, on the other hand, is venturing into unfamiliar territory and should be riding an emotional wave heading into the game.

The team is driven by running back Jordan Todman, second in the nation in rushing this season, who carried the ball 302 times for 1574 yards and 14 touchdowns. At 5’9 and 193 pounds, Todman is probably not going to plow over Oklahoma’s line, but he’s clearly a threat to open up the game for the Huskies.

We have heard all of the criticism with the 2011 Fiesta Bowl that would be expected when Connecticut, a team who lost to Temple (8-4 (5-3 MAC)), Louisville (6-6 (3-4 Big East)) and Rutgers (4-8 (1-6 Big East)), plays a team like Oklahoma. The Big East is too weak to have an automatic qualifier anymore. Connecticut isn’t even ranked. The Huskies aren’t even the best team in their conference. They lost to a MAC team for heaven’s sake, how can they expect to match up with a Big 12 Champion.

The 40th playing of the Fiesta Bowl matches the Connecticut Huskies against the Oklahoma Sooners. Since 2007 the game has been played in Glendale, Arizona at the University of Phoenix stadium, which contains a natural grass playing field (or, if you’re really a turf enthusiast, it’s Tifway 419 Bermuda hybrid planted in early May 2006 using stolons in an 11? bed of USGA sand mix with inclusions, according to the bowl’s official website). The Big 12 currently is the chosen conference to send a representative each year, and it’s well worth it, as both attending schools receive a payout of million.

Reportedly the smell of roasting chips caused many mouths to water, and one freshman even suggested a run to the local store for some chips and salsa so that everyone could sit around snacking while they enjoyed the fire, but he was silenced by an upperclassman. Previous sponsors of the game include Sunkist and IBM, and clearly nothing says “fiesta” like Big Blue. Loosen that top button on your Oxford!
