Arts Integrated And Learning Styles Go Hand-In-Hand In Oklahoma City Schools

Many people understand the importance of exposure to the arts. We love art; it is a necessary part of our society. In fact, for every culture and every society, art in some form or another is critical to how we live. For many, many years, arts programs have been cut in Oklahoma City Schools in efforts to divert funds to “more pressing” subject areas like reading and mathematics. While these are indeed necessary subjects for Oklahoma City Schools students to master, including an arts education in a student’s learning experiences can do nothing but improve their time attending Oklahoma City Schools, as well as contribute to the amount of success they see as a whole.

Most Oklahoma City Public Schools concentrate on teaching students in three ways; by showing them how to do things, by telling them the information they need, or by giving them opportunities to try things themselves (also known as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles).

There are, in fact, many learning styles as identified by Howard Gardner, psychologist and noted pedagogical theorist:

- Linguistic – “word-smart”
- Interpersonal – “people smart”
- Bodily-kinesthetic – “body smart”
- Logical-mathematical – “math smart”
- Naturalist – “nature smart”
- Spatial – “picture smart”
- Musical – “music smart”
- Intrapersonal – “self smart”

More than ever, schools are realizing the importance of addressing all of these learning styles. Students attending certain Oklahoma City Schools are reaping the benefits of the commitment to providing educational experiences via these learning styles.

In efforts to give more and more students an education that addresses their specific learning style(s), some Oklahoma City Schools are integrating the arts into their programs. Following an “A+” model originally begun in North Carolina, Oklahoma City Schools are instituting their own arts integration programs. Originally a project of the DaVinci Institute, it is currently administered by the University of Central Oklahoma.

The model being used by Oklahoma City Schools looks at 8 different areas to improve arts integration in their schools:

1) Arts;
2) Curriculum;
3) Multiple intelligences;
4) Experiential learning;
5) Enriched assessment;
6) Collaboration;
7) Infrastructure; and
8) Climate

For teachers employed with Oklahoma City Schools, the program has been a godsend. All educators strive to “light the spark” and desperately want to reach all – 100% – of their students. For the instructional staff, of the Oklahoma City Schools using this model, discovering how to appeal to the different ways children learn has been exactly what they have been looking for.

Another impressive aspect of the program is the Oklahoma City Schools professional development that goes along with it. Instead of giving newly trained teaches the manual with the expectation that they follow the model, the A+ model provides extensive and ongoing training and support to all teachers new to the program. Oklahoma City Schools’ teachers focus on learning to work together, using research-based practices to establish curriculum that includes interdisciplinary themes that foster arts integration across classes as well as use Gardner’s various learning styles.

Clearly, Oklahoma City Schools are working to improve learning, one style at a time.

OU Club of Colorado – OU vs Oklahoma State Newsletter

OU Club of Colorado – OU vs Oklahoma State Newsletter

It’s Bedlam Week, and time to hate on Little Brother
# 14 Oklahoma travels to Stillwater, OK to take on the #10 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, aka the Choke Pokes. OSU has the #2 offense in the country heading into this one lead my talent everywhere that they get into their plays. Of course they think this is their year. You would think with 80-15-7 & 7 in a row for the Sooners, they would learn, that this isn’t their year.
This is one of the biggest Bedlam football games in years! The winner of this game will be the winner of the Big 12 South and head to Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, TX for the Big 12 Championship Game, where a BCS bowl trip is on the line. Come join us at Stoney’s this Saturday at 6:00 pm Mountain Time, for this rivalry game which features 2 teams in the top 15. If you have family or friends in town please invite them along, they are always welcomed, even if they like the wrong school. (or you can drop them off at the Fainting Goat, which is 2 blocks away on Broadway and home of the Colorado Cowboys)
Because it’s Bedlam Week: Did you hear that the Oklahoma State library had to close down this year? Somebody stole the book. That’s not all… when it was returned it was all colored in.

So come on out to Stoney’s Bar and Grill for Sooner Magic Shot Specials, Big Shiner Beers, and Fresh Fried Okra and chicken fried steak sliders.

If you are in Colorado Springs, don’t forget to join our sister group, the OU Club of Southern Colorado at Buffalo Wild Wings North in the Springs. They have had a great turn out every week, and growing stronger each week. They are also VERY kid and family friendly.

Pictured: Austin Box looks like he will be healthy and has practiced this week after getting hit hard and leaving the Baylor game and he’s ready to anchor the center of the OU defense this Saturday for the Sooners.

Future Watch Parties and Events:
We have gotten several inquires about what happens to the OU Club of Colorado once Football season ends. Well, one thing that many won’t see, is we are actively helping the University of Oklahoma out in recruiting high school kids from the area to attend OU as well as working on recognizing and selecting deserving students for scholarships.

But that’s not really what people want to know. They want to know if we’ll be getting together on a regular basis, or even just every once in awhile. The simple answer to that right now is YES of course. The more difficult answer is to the follow up question, “Oh, yeah, like what?”

Last year we had 3 basketball watch parties, and they weren’t exactly a huge success. We might do some this year, but our Men’s team stinks on ice, errr.is going through a rebuilding phase. The Women’s team looks to be one of the tops in the country yet again, but many of their games are on Sundays. I think we’ll do a few basketball watch parties, for like OSU or Texas games. Hey it’s still OU sports and a reason to get out and meet up with your fellow Sooners.

The good news is we will be doing more special events this next year. With a new social chairperson to plan and coordinate, we will do at least a couple things this next year and hopefully more. We won’t be going completely black for 8 months! We are thinking of events like a Wine Tasting night (even have a person wanting to give us a private label of wine), or a day outing to a museum or to the zoo, or a day of casual sports in the park. Of course we’ll let you all know when we have those!

If you have an interest, and want us to do something, or have a suggestion, feel free to let us know. If you are the Mumbly-pegs champion of the Rockies and think a “Beginning day of Mumbly-peg” would be fun for a group let us know! If you want to lead something please let us know as well. If you run something like a fly fishing guide, or a rafting guide, or a kid’s art shop for example and think it’s something the OU Club of Colorado could do as an event, we want do know that! Contact our Social Chairperson: Kristin Bieberly at mailto: kristin.bieberly@ef.com if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Mile High Bowl Association Holiday Party

The Mile High Bowl Association’s annual Holiday Party is December 4th at 6 pm to Midnight. It will be at Blake Street Tavern this year located at 2301 Blake Street in Denver. This is the same night as the Big 12 Championship game, which they will have on. You can get a ticket for only a person at their website: click on the PDF for the application. The OU Club of Colorado will be a sponsor again this year, and we’ll have a few tickets to give away at upcoming watch parties. Fill free to join them for this fun event.

Up Coming Watch Parties:

Saturday, November 27th, 2010 6:00 pm Mountain
#14 Oklahoma Sooners AT #10 Oklahoma State Cowboys Bedlam Game Watch Party
This is for a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Arlington, TX. ESPN College Game Day will be in Stillwater for this big game. This will mark the 25th time ESPN GameDay has been on hand for an OU game. Only Florida (32) and Ohio State (28) have been part of a GameDay site more times than the Sooners.
Saturday, December 4th, 2010 6:00 pm Mountain
University of Oklahoma VS Nebraska Cornhuskers – Big XII Championship Game Watch Party
We WILL BE HERE! I just wanted you know when it was, like maybe you were living under a rock or something. If OU wins out we’ll get to play Nebraska (assuming they beat Colorado this week) with a BCS Bowl trip on the line, just like it should be, as we say good bye to an old friend. We will invoke the ghosts of Billy Sims and Keith Jackson and days of Sooner Magic from the past in the last game of this big rivalry. It seems like we should bring oranges to throw on the field, like the old days.

Personally, I’ll hate to see those guys go. I always thought this was one of the best and unique rivalries in all of sports. It wasn’t hate like OU-Texas, it’s not intra-state rivalry that most schools had.this was one built on mutual respect. To be the best you have to beat the best, and for many, many moons, that meant for these 2 schools beating the other. And when it was all over, unlike many rivalries, we could be proud of the other guy. We knew they made us better and vice-versa.

A rivalry based on mutual respect.something I fear we’ll never see again.

BOWL GAME WATCH PARTY Oklahoma Sooners vs UCONN
OU will be going to a Bowl Game this year, unlike a certain football team in Austin, TX who barring a miracle will be sitting at home this holiday season. Where will OU end up? That’s anyone’s guess, as there too many key football games this weekend. If OU wins their next 2 games, they will be heading to the Fiesta Bowl on January 1st, as Big 12 Champions and most likely play the winner of the Big East which will be either Pitt or West Virginia.
Lose and they can end up at either the Alamo Bowl against Arizona, or more likely the Insight Copper Bowl against either Michigan or Penn St.
I wrote a full article on OU’s current bowl picture this week, and you can read it all here: Crimson and Cream Machine. Colorado will be pulling out all stops for whatever game we are in, with a silent auction with several really neat items and an all you can eat Taco Bar. If it’s New Year’s Day and the Fiesta Bowl, we will have Blacked Eyed Peas for your New Year’s Good Luck!

OU Club of Colorado connects Sooner fans, alumni and friends to the University of Oklahoma , through community service and fund raising. OU Club of Colorado hosts the largest watch parties in the nation outside of Norman and outside of Texas during the Red River Rivalry game.

College Football Wrap-Up Week 1 – BYU, Boise State, Alabama & Oklahoma State Are Huge Winners

Category : Region IV

College Football Wrap-Up Week 1 – BYU, Boise State, Alabama & Oklahoma State Are Huge Winners

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

(Editor’s Note: All of the team rankings for this opening article are based on the Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, and the Sagarin Ratings, Jeff Sagarin’s factual, mathematical ratings among competition between all 245 Division 1 teams.)

Brigham Young, Boise State, Alabama and Oklahoma State were college football’s biggest winners in the opening week of the NCAA season.

No. 20-ranked Brigham Young (BYU) used a late 4th quarter touchdown to upset No. 3-ranked Oklahoma, 14-13, and all but obliterated Oklahoma’s hopes for a dream season. The Sooners, who lost to Florida 24-14 in last year’s National Championship Game, returned the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner—quarterback Sam Bradford.

Bradford strained his throwing shoulder in the closing seconds of the first half on a hard, clean, highlight-reel hit by BYU linebacker Coleby Clawson; Bradford watched the second half from the sidelines. Bradford’s backup, Landry Jones, could not get Oklahoma’s offense moving enough to protect its 10-7 halftime lead.

BYU quarterback Max Hall was 26-of-38 for 329 yards and 2 touchdowns. Yes, Hall did give up 2 interceptions and he was sacked 4 times, but when it counted, he led the Cougars on a 16-play, 78-yard scoring drive that broke Oklahoma’s back.

After converting on a 4th-and-4 play from the Sooners’ 29 yard line, Hall completed a 7-yard TD pass to a wide-open McKay Jacobson in the back of the end zone with 3:03 remaining. BYU’s victory was huge, not just because Oklahoma was ranked No. 3, but also because the Cougars won on the road.

There is no way on God’s green Earth that Oklahoma should be ranked No. 3 in this week’s poll, and Brigham Young should most certainly be ranked higher than No. 20.

Some fans may blame Sam Bradford for not generating enough offense in the first half because Oklahoma led the nation in scoring last year with 51+ points per game. However, Bradford did not give up BYU’s go-ahead touchdown—the Oklahoma defense allowed the score, the same defense that ranked 58th in scoring defense last year.

There are reasons why Oklahoma lost the national championship to Florida last year, and the biggest reason was the Sooners’ scoring defense—they were a whole lot better on offense than defense. Sooner fans do not want to accept this, but that is their problem.

BYU’s victory would have gotten even bigger press if were not for No. 14-ranked Boise State’s most excellent 19-8 victory at home over No. 16-ranked Oregon. The Broncos shut out Oregon in the first half, 13-0, and then made it stick in the second half.

Oregon won the sucker-punch contest thanks to the Ducks’ out-of-control, 1,000-yard-plus senior running back LeGarrette Blount slugging Boise State’s Byron Hout after Boise State’s win, but the Broncos won the contest, and the bragging rights.

Blount was kicked off the Oregon team for the rest of the season. He has run his last handoff for the Ducks, and quite possibly blown away big bucks and an NFL career opportunity. After throwing his sucker punch, Blount apparently also slapped a teammate. Unfortunately, on his way up, Blount has apparently not figured out that mugging and thugging are street activities, and not part of college football.

Neither team played well, but the Broncos made an early-season statement about the state of the mid-level conferences.

Entering their games, both BYU from the Mountain West Conference, and Boise State from the Western Athletic Conference, are rarely mentioned in the same breath as teams from the 6 major conferences that get automatic bids to the 6 major bowl games, which includes the National Championship Game.

The 6 major conferences include the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Big Ten, Pacific 10 (Pac-10), Big 12, Big East, and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Last year Utah from the Mountain West Conference ran the table with a perfect 13-0 record, and was not even considered as a worthy opponent for Florida in the National Championship Game.

Utah promptly trashed Alabama 31-17 in the BCS Sugar Bowl, and a one-loss Oklahoma got the face Florida. Oklahoma’s 45-35 defeat came at the hands of another one-loss team, the Texas Longhorns, who were beaten by Texas Tech 39-33 on Michael Crabtree’s great last-second TD catch. The Longhorns were upset that they were not selected to play Florida for the title.

After going 12-0, Alabama lost to Florida 31-20 in the SEC Championship Game, and then never got over it, losing badly to Utah. Had the Alabama Crimson Tide been given the chance to face Florida Gators, they would have done better; the Crimson Tide viewed Utah as half an opponent, that was Alabama’s mistake.

Apparently No. 5-ranked Alabama has now recovered as the Crimson Tide rolled over the No. 7-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies 34-24 Saturday at home, scoring 18 points in the last quarter to seal the deal. The game was huge as it is rare when two Top 10 teams face off in a season opener.

The No. 9-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, who went 5-0 last year as a home favorite, picked up a great victory at home against the visiting Georgia Bulldogs, 24-10. Top ranked teams must beat other top ranked teams to climb in the polls, and Oklahoma State did just that, scoring touchdowns in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters as Georgia’s offense sputtered, and its defense gave up too many points.

Now let’s review some blowout victories by Top 25 and unranked teams over cupcake opponents just collecting a big paycheck for an expected defeat, and hoping they do not suffer a lot of injuries before going into league play:

No. 1 Florida by 59 points at home over 1-AA Charleston Southern, ranked 201 among 245 teams by Sagarin, 62-3.

Air Force (ranked 55) by 72 points at home over 1-AA Nicholls State, ranked 176, 72-0.

Arkansas State (ranked 119) by 61 points at home over 1-AA Mississippi Valley State, ranked 237 among 245 teams, 61-0.

Southern Mississippi (ranked 65) by 52 points at home over 1-AA Alcorn State, ranked 232 among 245 teams, 52-0.

Fresno State (ranked 71) by 51 points at home over 1-AA UC Davis (the University of California at Davis), ranked 146, 51-0.

Houston (ranked 66) by 48 points at home over 1-AA Northwestern State, ranked 178, 55-7.

Vanderbilt (ranked 54) by 45 points at home over 1-AA Western Carolina, ranked 182, 45-0.

I am personally ignoring any Top 25 or unranked team that played a 1-AA school and did not win by at least 45 points. Let some other media give them ink.

Here are some good wins by Top 25 and unranked teams:

No. 4 Southern California (USC) by 53 points at home over San Jose State, ranked 109, 56-3.

No. 12 California by 45 points at home over Maryland, ranked 45, 52-13,

No. 23 Notre Dame by 35 points at home over Nevada, ranked 77, 35-0.

No. 24 Nebraska by 46 points at home over Florida Atlantic, ranked 112, 49-3.

No. 25 Kansas by 46 points at home over Northern Colorado, ranked 198, 49-3.

Baylor (ranked 85) on the road over Wake Forest, ranked 30, 24-21. Missouri (unranked by the AP and Coaches’ Polls but ranked No. 18 by Sagarin) on the road over Illinois (ranked 63), 37-9. South Carolina (ranked 31) on the road over North Carolina State, ranked 58, 7-3, in the lowest scoring game of the first weekend. Here are some really unimpressive wins by Top 25 and unranked teams during the first week of play:

Topping the list is No. 19-ranked Utah’s home victory over in-state rival Utah State, ranked 131, 35-17.The Utah Utes were 13-0 last year; the Utah State Aggies were 3-9.

No. 2 Texas at home over Louisiana-Monroe, ranked 127, 59-20. Dude, the Longhorns should have done better against last year’s 4-8 Warhawk team.

No. 6 Ohio State at home over Navy, ranked 59, 31-27. The Buckeyes were outscored 13-11 in the 4th quarter by the Midshipmen, who went 8-5 last year and lost 29-19 to Wake Forest in the EagleBank Bowl. What is it about Ohio State Buckeyes that every year they are given a pass in the final rankings? The Buckeyes lost to Florida 41-14 in the 2006 National Championship Game, lost to LSU 38-24 in the 2007 National Championship Game, and lost to Texas 24-21 in the 2008 BCS Fiesta Bowl.

Face it, man, the Buckeyes are weak. Would you believe Ohio State was 6-6 against the spread last year, and a paltry 1-4 against the spread as a home favorite? No wonder they have fallen out of favor with the betting public.

No. 11 LSU on the road over Washington, ranked 80, 31-23. This game could have easily gotten away from the LSU Tigers. The Washington Huskies, winless last year at 0-12, are much, much better this year under new coach Steve Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Nick Holt. Take away an errant pass that led to a 29-yard touchdown by LSU’s defensive unit, and a 45-yard Tiger TD pass and catch with a missed tackle that Husky free safety Greg Walker misplayed on a one-on-one, and Washington wins the game, 23-17.

Get this: Washington ran 83 plays to LSU’s 48, out-gained the Tigers 478 yards to 321, and 11 Husky drives went beyond midfield and into Tiger territory.

COLORADO: Among the numerous grants available under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is the Consumer Assistance Grant, which would allow Colorado to set up an Insurance Ombudsman Office. Although no state agencies have indicated an interest in housing such a position, several consumer groups see this as an opportunity to broaden their impact on the insurance process. Family Voices Colorado is the one organization that appears to meet most of the grant requirements to be a lead agency. Despite the advocates’ interest, the Health Reform Implementation Board expressed serious concerns about the financial sustainability of such an office. The grant funding is only available for one year, and the state does not have sufficient resources in its general fund. The Implementation Director also noted that a carrier assessment was not being viewed as an option.

CONNECTICUT: The House of Representatives last week joined the Senate in overriding the Governor’s veto of their campaign finance overhaul bill. However, there’s still an injunction in force that was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Stefan Underhill on August 11 against all portions of Connecticut’s law that were deemed unconstitutional by the Second Circuit. It is expected that the state will swiftly file a motion for relief from the injunction. Campaign finance law in Connecticut will not move forward until the District Court lifts its injunction, as anticipated, in the coming weeks.

OKLAHOMA: At a recent hearing before Oklahoma Supreme Court Referee Barbara Swimley, an attorney for state Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland challenged a new law that will levy a 1 percent fee on health care claims. Holland’s attorney described the bill as one that had nothing to do with insurance, but instead was designed to help raise money for the state and balance the state budget. He also argued that the legislature did not follow the constitutional process in passing the bill. The state’s constitution requires all revenue-raising measures to either pass the Oklahoma legislature by a three-fourths vote or be submitted to state voters for approval. The attorney for the Oklahoma Health Care Authority argued that the court could use the presumptive argument that all legislation passed by the Oklahoma legislature and signed into law is constitutional. Commissioner Holland’s legal challenge now rests with the Court, which must decide whether to uphold the law or strike it down as unconstitutional. Referee Swimley promised that court officials would make a decision about the case ”soon.” The bill is slated to take effect August 26, 2010, with the first payment of the fee due October 31.

TEXAS: The presidents of the University of Texas system’s six health-related universities last week publicly listed their worries about millions of uninsured Texans becoming covered in 2014 under the country’s sweeping new health care law: not enough doctors, too little money from government health care programs and fewer commercial insurers to cushion financial losses as they do now. The Chair of the Health Affairs Committee predicted that the changes will impact the UT system “significantly,” possibly threatening the health institutions’ funding for research and academics. They cited a loss of federal and state money for facilities that care for a large share of low-income and uninsured patients as the key culprit. They also fear that many people who are currently uninsured and who begin buying insurance in 2014 will buy the cheapest insurance they can get. The presidents worry that the result will be fewer commercial insurers, which now absorb some of the costs and help hospitals make up for low payments from Medicaid. But they stopped short of characterizing the law as a negative and called it the ”new normal” instead. The six schools plan to find more efficient ways to care for patients, including the use of more nurse practitioners http://www.easytoinsureme.com/. End of update

Health Reform Will Survive?

Despite brave and bullying promises from Republicans to repeal the health reform “monstrosity” this past week, they can’t do it. Not in the next two years, and maybe not even in 2012, no matter who wins the presidency. Why? For now, because even if the Senate agreed with the House and passed a repeal bill, President Obama would veto it. By 2012 the growing number of Americans (more than half) who already like provisions of the new law, will want to keep them.

Oklahoma Shakespeare In The Park

Category : Region IV

Oklahoma Shakespeare In The Park

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park (OSP) is a live classical theater in downtown Oklahoma City, the brainchild of Kathryn McGill and Jack J. O’Meara. The theater generally performs in different locations. The summer season performances are staged at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage while in the fall and winter, performances are staged at the Stage Center. The Mitchell Hall in the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Oklahoma also becomes a venue occasionally. Larry Alley serves as President while co-founder Kathryn McGill is the Artistic Director.

Founded in 1985 in Edmond, Oklahoma, as an outdoor summer Shakespeare festival, the theater began performing at the small stage available in Hefer Park. The theater’s first productions were Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” both of which were staged with the help of a grant of 0 from the Oklahoma Arts Council to add to the financing from McGill and O’Meara themselves. Both plays were extremely successful, running for 5 weeks each for a season of 10 weeks in July and August, 1985. 6000 people in total were enchanted by the performances.

The initial success was a sign of things to come. The theater went through certain milestones in its history such as its incorporation in 1986, admissions being charged from 1988 onwards, and the theater moving to Oklahoma City in December 2006. From June 14 to September 1, 2007, the theater staged “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Cyrano de Bergerac” and “Macbeth” at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage. The Stage Center witnessed the special Centennial production of “The Grapes of Wrath” in November, and “The Scarlet Letter” in January 2008. A year later in January 2009, the theater staged “Julius Caesar” at Stage Center.

The presence of Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park in Oklahoma City is sure to enrich the city’s well-known cultural heritage. Vacationers could experience a mystical evening at an OSP performance and spend the night in a brilliant Oklahoma City hotel.
