Hello From Chicago – Part 4 – Chinatown And Second City

Chicago, Arlington House, Sunday October 23,2005, 6:30 am

After thoroughly exploring the Pullman Historic District, we decided to check out Chinatown, one of the many ethnic neighbourhoods that Chicago has to offer. The weather had turned from cool and grey with the occasional peek of sunshine to dark, rainy and cold, so rather than walking around we decided to have an early dinner at a Chinatown restaurant called the Lobster King.

Both my friend Linda and I had ordered vegetarian dishes, but after taking our order the waiter returned and informed us that he was going to charge us extra for each dish since vegetables are much more expensive during the winter months. I decided to have a look at their takeout menu and saw that the same low price was listed on the takeout menu as on the main menu. As a result I put forward an argument that if both the dine-in and the take-out menu are stating the same low price for both dishes, I would not agree with being charged an extra for each dish based on a verbal announcement. Either change the menu to include the higher price or charge the prices that are shown on both menus. I am not usually a difficult, picky guest in any hospitality establishment, but to try to charge more for a dish that is listed at a lower price on both menus did not seem a proper business practice to me.

The waiter / manager finally agreed to charge us the prices listed on the menu, and the food was indeed delicious. After exploring the Chicago Cultural Center and the Historic Pullman District we had gotten quite hungry and we really enjoyed our early dinner.

After reviving ourselves we hopped on the subway because we wanted to check out Little Italy. So we got on the Blue Line and were told to exit at the UIC (University of Illinois) Campus and walk southwards. By that time it was raining and it was a rather inhospitable clammy day. We actually never ended up finding Little Italy, but walked around for about 40 minutes in the rain and after this exercise of futility we decided to pursue our evening plans: to attend a live performance at Second City, Chicago’s famous comedy venue.

So we took the subway back downtown to Jackson and we waited for the Purple Line until we realized that this line only runs during rush hour on weekdays. So we inquired which line we had to take and we found out that the Brown Line (to Kimball) would take us to Second City. At that point we realized that we had also been waiting on the wrong side of the platform. I guess in the Loop el-trains only run in one direction and we had already been wondering why we had seen 3 brown line trains go by on the other side of the platform, but none of them had arrived on our side.

I’d say we spent a good 45 minutes waiting on the wrong side of the platform until we finally had enough and went downstairs to ask a CTA employee who directed us onto the correct platform. In the rainy clammy weather this wasn’t the most exciting part of our trip, but we managed to entertain ourselves with lots of insider jokes in our original Austrian dialects.

Finally we caught a brown line train and made our way up to North Wells Street, into the Old Town Neighbourhood, home of the Second City Comedy Club. Since 1959 Second City has established itself as a Chicago landmark and a national treasure. This theatre has launched the careers of such comic geniuses as John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and others more. It offers nightly comedy shows, as well as a variety of other programs and services.

The theatre has two main stages, both of which were sold out yesterday, so we headed up onto the 4th floor of the building which houses Donny’s Skybox Studio Theatre which is affiliated with Second City. This theatre features an eclectic mix of student productions as well as other alternative shows and at .00 per person, the tickets were a steal.

The Outreach & Diversity Program produces two to three original shows each year that are performed at Second City’s studio theatre, Donny’s Skybox, on the fourth floor of Piper’s Alley. At least one of these productions is an original revue written and performed by the Outreach & Diversity ensemble, a group of African American, Latino or Asian actors cast through annual auditions.

We bought tickets for the 9 pm show: “Six Degrees of Reparation”, a hip comedy revue featuring improv, original material and Second City classic scenes with an urban multicultural twist which was put on by 6 young comedians which included 5 black and 1 oriental performers.

The show offered a lot of physical comedy and a variety of different sketches. One of the funniest ones was a sketch entitled “Osama bin Laden could be anywhere”, where one of the female comedians donned a big black beard and kept popping up in different everyday situations. The “superior Asian girl” sketch played with A, B, C (Asian, Black, Caucasian) stereotypes and demonstrated how we all have pre-conceived notions of one another. In the “Black Black Awards” sketch the troupe made fun of famous celebrities such as Whitney Houston, Maya Angelou and even Martha Stewart.

One of the most poignant sketches was set in an imaginary Office Depot store, where the black and Asian store employees were giving very shoddy and unfriendly service to a variety of customers. At the end, the young black shopkeeper explained that with a wage of .50 an hour, after all her costs (food, rent, bus passes, doing her nails, etc.), she was 9 in the hole, and at that price a smile would not be included in the service.

We both enjoyed the live performance of these gifted comedians immensely as we both love live theatre and comedy performances. As far as culture is concerned, Chicago has something to offer to everyone.

Well, today is our last day here in Chicago, and the weather is forecast to be quite cold with a 60% chance of rain. Fortunately Chicago has many indoor venues to choose from so I am sure we won’t get bored.

The Best Kept Secret Everyone Seems to Know Part 3 of 5

The Paradox of Perception

Understanding human perception brings us to the somewhat esoteric subject of the human trait known as EGO. I will not belabor this discourse with an in-depth academic exploration into the Id, Ego, and Super-Ego, popularized by the Freudian structural model of the human psyche. Nor will I make any distinctions in reference to the “Male Ego” (I’ve never even heard of a “Female Ego”).

Gender not withstanding, for the purpose of our discussion regarding the ego, it will suffice to say that we all have one, and in relatively equal measure. For the sake of brevity the next few sections will focus attention on the predominant aspects of ego germane to our subject.

Ego breeds the evils of prejudice. And since I brought up this immediately offensive and politically incorrect “hot-potato” of a word, an explanation of context is clearly in order.

Most people think of prejudice in terms of its common social stigma, perhaps most notably in the form of racial prejudice. But prejudice is by no means restricted to race. Prejudice has evolved throughout our cultural history to include such things as women, homosexuals bisexuals (pretty much any sexuals), people with disabilities, the poor, the rich, the old, the young, drunkards (a personal favorite), and the list goes on ad nauseum. Name any single thing in the known universe and there will likely be someone somewhere that holds prejudices for or against it.

The preceding paragraph pertained to prejudice in reference to things from the world outside the mind. But ego breeds another kind of prejudice, a yin to the yang as it were. Instead of pertaining to things outside the mind this type of prejudice is decidedly in favor of everything inside the mind. This incarnation of ego is characterized by an inflated sense of self worth and extreme self assuredness were one’s own thoughts and opinions reign supreme to the exclusion of all others.

It must be acknowledged this orientation of the ego does indeed pose some significant advantages. A mind that views the world strictly through the lens of a self-fabricated ego can move through that world with single mindedness of purpose, effortlessly brushing aside any considerations that could stand in the way of achieving its goals. But success thus derived does not come without cost. Also there is no guarantee an inflated sense of self will achieve great success, especially when said inflation consists more of air than of substance. The cost is the same regardless and one way or another the devil always collects his due. Those that suffer this affliction rarely find the strength of character to realize their plight or recognize its folly.

The concept of prejudice extends far beyond its contemporary connotations to political incorrectness (a type of prejudice in its own right). In the larger sense prejudice denotes the ego harboring a steadfast penchant to favor its own personal preferences. There is nothing wrong with preferences per se, we all have them, but it is not the acquisition of specific preferences that is at issue. The issue is how ego tends to dominate our thinking and how its prejudices severely narrow our field of view, crippling our capacity to fathom the alternatives that make up the full spectrum experience of life. Prejudice is the function of an ego that regards its own preferences, whatever they may be, as the ultimate benchmark by which all things are measured and judged.

Our Precious Gift of Creativity

Essentially ego is what we experience as our own self. The existence of ego in its purest elemental form may well be absolute, an intrinsic aspect of the human condition. But from birth the ego is subject to the forces of evolution, which means its development is ultimately self-determined and therefore relative to the individual.

Many would say it is precisely our ego that defines our individuality, something to be nurtured, cultivated, and refined. Promptoria on the other hand views ego as something to be restrained, minimized, and kept under constant observation and careful scrutiny.

Ego is an integral aspect of our psychology that colors our view of the world, and all too often determines how we interpret our life experiences. When under the control of self-awareness the ego can serve as a powerful ally. Constrained and restricted to its own devices the ego tends to obscure any truths that conflict with its personal preferences by fabricating convenient new truths that favor them.

Are we not better off utilizing our precious gift of creativity to discover the reality of authentic truth, instead of creating an artificial reality based on self-serving falsehoods?

The Challenge We Face

Cultivating the conscious awareness of our own ego so that we may understand how ego influences our thinking is actually a more difficult skill to master than one might expect. We must gain awareness that we humans are in reality a great deal more than what we appear to be.

There is no way to examine our own ego from within the ego itself. The only way to accomplish this prodigious feat is to find a new unbiased vantage point from which to view.

The Supreme Being

When we close our eyes, and thereby draw a curtain over the world outside the mind, we dwell in a space that at once seems localized inside of our head and yet, when viewed from inside, has no discernable boundaries. An infinite inner universe where we have the power and freedom to create whatever we wish. Absolutely nothing exists in this space except that which we ourselves manifest.

We all exist as the Supreme Being of this inner universe where the only limits of creation are those we impose on ourselves. Within this universe is the source of our true human nature where the ego is merely a superficial image that obscures the more profound reality.

It is within this universe we can find the mirror to see our own ego’s true reflection in realistic clarity. Only then can we bypass the ego’s normal filtering mechanisms and engage in sober contemplation of self from a new unbiased perspective.

Why is Prayer Seldom Answered?

Prayer is not enough. You must visualize with faith and meditate daily on the ideals that you want to change your life around toward while working closely with a strong sense of God’s personal love and blessing. You must put all your emotional energy (enthusiasm) and focus into what you do want while avoiding thoughts and feelings of what is not wanted or considered undesirable. I don’t at all mean being irresponsible, but rather put one’s focus and energy into being more responsible and caring than ever before, because that is one of the positive ideals, traits, and/or qualities of success that’s most practical to have.

You also must make the new ideals that you want a habitual way of thinking. Never forget you are a powerful spiritual being whose consciousness and thoughts are not just limited to and caused by the physical brain (which is really just a “conduit, switchboard or condenser” through which the physical world can be accessed by the soul), but are from a timeless, multidimensional source of massive power and of universal (holographic) origin and influence. The Reality that is You are actually at or above the level of creation itself. You are a powerful spiritual being, living on Earth to experience and overcome physical limitations.

You absolutely must not wish any harm against anyone else, but rather be very grateful and appreciative of their lives. Avoid jealousy, all sense of competition and all self-righteousness. Instead sense the Oneness of all life and sincerely wish for others all the best of everything. What goes around comes around. Love God in others with all your heart. Respect and serve God in others with all your heart. Avoid all fear (of losing) and attachment to what you have already. Real happiness, true happiness comes from within. As a child (reflection) of God, you are independently wealthy.

To meditate on what is needed is far more potent than simply praying. That means one is to concentrate, visualize with all one’s inner senses for nearly an hour a day the actual fulfillment of one’s goal, desire or dream. Learn how to focus all one’s attention to the exclusion of all other thoughts on the one most desperately needed or desired thing, whether it be piles of money, gold, a house, a relationship, or even a tranquil garden of blossoming roses and all the sublime scents of nature; if it is good for your soul, then it has to come to pass! The more focus and the less distraction one has, the sooner whatever you focus on can unfold into your life as an actual experience. It is important to conserve one’s sexual energy because sexual energy is a creative force and may very well be an essential help for one’s ability, inspiration and enthusiasm (all are essential!) to focus and concentrate on whatever goal has to be reached. Then all one’s actions must in turn logically comply with, responsibly engage in, and physically become involved with the actual accomplishment of the goal in mind.

What You Renounce You Can Have

True prosperity is achieved through following the above inspiring principles with a loving and joyous attitude. Never forget the supreme commandment: love God with all your heart. Build up a habitual attitude of love, joy and gratitude. These positive attitudes give off a strong positive influence, blessing the atmosphere, all other people, all other life forms, and your relationship with the entire inner universe of your being or inner Reality, thus changing everything you experience.

Your Relationship with God

Why even bother to have a relationship to God and who is God anyway? God is a cosmic conscious “computer” of infinite size and vastness, encompassing and consisting of all dimensions, especially those beyond time and space, cause and causation. God is beyond even the duality of existence and non-existence: after all, what is pure awareness? So anyone asking whether God exists or not is beside the point. You can’t possibly describe or even comprehend this pure awareness which is the Source of all experience and creation. You can only experience it. But you must work with and strive to know and love this awesome Reality behind all existence because it is the underlying Source of you. It is the tree of the branch that you depend on for support, the trunk of your “tree” of creation. You are a part of God and to the degree you can drop all fears, desires, etc. and to the degree you can develop a profound sense of love, joy, prosperity and laughter, determines just how much of this truth you will experience. The metaphysical books by Joseph Murphy gives one confidence and knowledge as to where and how to take the “helm” of one’s life and turn it around to the “still waters” of peace, and the abundance of an “overflowing cup.” We give up or renounce our fears and desires by realizing that they are fulfilled already with the unsurpassed mercy and abundance of the universe. These truths are as timeless as the 23rd Psalm.

The Deep Meaning Behind the Lord’s Prayer

There are many variations and translations of this prayer. It is one of the most widely recited prayers in the world. Of course, there is a major metaphysical meaning and significance to every word of the Lord’s Prayer that tells us how to live in complete harmony with the universe, and when recited with devotion and sincerity of heart will saturate one with a great sense of awe, love and abundant blessings from God.

“Our Father which art in Heaven” proclaims the universal consciousness of Godhood or Spirit as being in a continuous state of perfect wholeness or “Heaven.” God is all knowing, all truth, all love, all powerful and all joy. To know this state of consciousness is to always be in a state of heavenly joy, abundance and bliss.

“Hallowed by thy Name.” The name of God, whatever it may be, is to be made holy or set apart for holy use. Never cry out the Lord’s name in vain (how many times have we all done this?) because it’s vibration is potent and all too wonderful for it to ever be abused in a fit of mundane frustration. Would you want to say something as sacred and close to your heart as the name of your true love, your soul mate and spouse forever in a way without reverence and respect? Love is too sacred and any name or word for one you love, who is the nearest and dearest (God) should be a deep and sacred joy to meditate on or chant deep within the sacredness of one’s heart.

“Thy Kingdom come.” We must remember that God is far more than just a religion or a prayer. God’s purpose is to lead us up through many states and stages of evolution or consciousness or strata of being, revealing entire kingdoms or spheres of 100% natural realities of finer and finer vibrations (far beyond the range of the physical senses) that are awesomely beautiful, abundant and all fulfilling in their nature. The “Kingdom” is within all conscious beings and when it arrives (or rather when we arrive to it) we get to live in paradise. The main challenge is to live in this paradise as a perfect master of life while still on Earth and to create abundance where originally there was only lack.

“Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven” is the great reason why many souls must come to this earth which is so full of misery and all sorts of challenges. This statement reveals God’s intention for all of us which is to somehow channel light from heaven and to manifest on Earth the same goodness and values always found in the higher realms beyond death and above the physical plane, and to bridge the gap between heaven and Earth, and to even create a communication bridge between the spheres so that Spirit can directly guide and instruct physically incarnate humans toward a much more fulfilling destiny of wondrous abundance and permanent salvation from suffering. In other words, we are here to create heaven on Earth, however, most tragically and unfortunately too many are mired in spiritual ignorance and are therefore doing just the opposite and are often undoing all the good things the wise and good souls are trying to do.

“Give us this day our daily bread” and we are praying in this way to become established in the attitude of receiving God’s universal abundance, provision or care that is also very personal, complete, and affectionately loving. This prayer acknowledges the fact that we are lovingly looked after by Spirit for our own good and safety depending on how much we acknowledge Spirit, how much we put Spirit first in our lives. Spirit is the more feminine aspect of God that is the Divine Mother, Zero Point Energy or Sustainer of all animate and inanimate objects and can be heard in the right ear as the universally creative “Om” sound. Her universal consort is God the Father who is the great, unmanifested infinitude and guiding laws of physics and principles of all reality, or pure consciousness beyond all manifestation without end.

As we come to “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” we discover there is a universal law that underlies the importance of forgiveness.

Jesus in St. Matthew 14 and 15 had this to say about the prayer: “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive men not their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” This statement is what I believe to be the foundational truth behind that widely acclaimed A Course in Miracles which teaches forgiveness as a way toward miraculous recovery from all kinds of difficulties and challenges people are often afflicted with. After all, if you feel one owes you even a simple apology or had made your life miserable and should bring back all kinds of compensation, never forget all the favors you must owe others! There is a universal law of karmic balance so subtle that materialistic scientists completely dismiss it, yet it is so profound and fundamental to the health of the soul, to ignore it would be the height of spiritual stupidity and ignorance. Holding a grudge, or insisting everyone who owes you money pay up, and/or never letting go of old hatreds and long unsettled debts would only serve to block one’s progress forward into a much freer life of healing vitality, spirituality, abundance, and prosperity.

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” means if we are not centering our life on God’s glorious values of light, love and goodness, then what are we centering our lives on? If we seek not the Light, we could soon end up in darkness. We must always discriminate between good and bad, light and dark, chastity and lust, etc. or be lost in many reincarnations until we do learn, “for the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) and death in this sense means having to go through as many cycles of birth, suffering and death until all karmic lessons are paid off. Only when we are free from selfish materialism does the everlasting life in multitudinous heavenly existences ultimately become available. How wise indeed are those who stay away from the temptations of materialism and selfishness!

“For thine is is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever” signifies the endless and wonderful existences in the eternities of heaven most worthy of attainment. We must keep in mind that the eternal glorious Kingdom of Heaven and God’s profound love is potentially within all souls. Words fail to depict and describe the actual experiences of souls living out their eternal spiritual lives in the higher spheres which are full of wonders and wondrous abundance impossible to convey to those on Earth because everything must be brought down to a materialistic level to be understood in our three-dimensional universe of corporeal reality.

“Amen” is “Aum” or “Om” or original sound of creation that is the Holy Ghost or Spirit. A whole book can be written on this remarkable syllable alone but it represents the sound often heard in the inner right ear by mystics and yogis during deep meditation. It comes from the Source of creation which is Zero Point Energy which sustains every electron in its orbit and is the ultimate source of all matter and energy and is the entire ocean of energy, prana, or Spirit engulfing all creation.

The mystical truths of the Bible come from a profound and universal Source of knowledge which is God. By focusing on all the wonderful qualities of God, one becomes more and more like what one focuses on.

Southern California consists of the land in California south of the Tehachapi Mountains. Most of Southern California’s population is centered in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego; the total population of Southern California is nearly 24 million. Southern California borders Mexico in the South, the Pacific Ocean on the West, and Arizona and Nevada make up the areas eastern border. Counties within Southern California: Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and San Diego are among the 15 most populous counties in the United States. Southern California is also known as So Cal.

Southern California is home to several different industries. The Tech Coast is made up of the Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Ventura counties. The Tech Coast consists of Universities, research institutes and multi-technology companies. Major Universities in the region include: The University of Southern California, The University of California, Los Angeles and The California Institute of Technology. North of San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains: Northern Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita), Northern San Bernardino (Mohave Desert), Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Kern.

Real estate in Southern California is often considered overvalued and many areas in Southern California are home to the most expensive real estate in the world. However, developing areas such as the San Bernardino County and Riverside County are providing many home buyers with affordable new home options. Although new homes in big Southern California cities like Los Angeles and San Diego are often expensive, these cities offer world class design options, amenities and quick access to seek after destinations. The lack of available real estate near the downtown areas of these large cities leaves home buyers with little detached new home opportunities.
