Places to Shoot a Movie in Michigan

Category : Region III

Places to Shoot a Movie in Michigan

When someone says “Michigan,” what comes to mind-besides cars, snow and college football? How about “regional filmmaking capital”?

That idea may be new to some movie fans and movie makers, but it shouldn’t be. After all, the Wolverine State has long attracted filmmakers as a shooting location, thanks to its excellent cities, historically strong economy, and-above all-its great geographical diversity. The state’s great strength, for movie directors, is that it offers many kinds of backdrop, and can stand in for nearly any location in the country. Where else can you find rolling plains (perfect for that epic of nineteenth-century Midwestern life), the rugged Porcupine Mountains (ready for that adventure film you’re planning), the forested beauty of the Upper Peninsula (the right place for the heroes of your romance film to fall in love), diverse cityscapes (a backdrop for your courtroom drama, crime film, corporate saga, or office comedy), and more-and still never be more than eighty-five miles from the beach? No wonder that movies like Grosse Pointe Blank, Anatomy of a Murder, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, RoboCop, Somewhere In Time and The Evil Dead were all partly or wholly shot in Michigan. More recently, 8 Mile, Jumper and the upcoming Youth In Revolt feature Michigan locations.

And that importance just increased in 2008, as the Michigan legislature passed a bill designed to make Michigan one of the most-incentivized filming locations in the country. From now on, the state that gave the film world Francis Ford Coppola (born in Detroit) will also give it a forty-percent across-the-board refundable tax credit, a loan program, and other incentives. (A complete list and application are available from the Michigan Film Office.) The package couples with the state’s inherent attractions to make Michigan a perfect shooting location for any project. Here are a few of the unique locational possibilities that the state affords:

Countryside. Michigan gets all four seasons-warm summers, vibrant falls, snowy (but rarely extreme) winters, and lively springs. Any story set in the woods would benefit from being shot in the Upper Peninsula, or lower-half towns such as Frankfort and Beulah. Midland offers excellent fall and summer possibilities, as do many places located along the gorgeous Chippewa River.

Lighthouses. The Lake Michigan coast is famous for its lighthouses, which make for a gorgeous, gloomy, romantic backdrop.

College campuses. Need a Victorian-looking college campus for a university drama? Try parts of Wayne State University in Detroit, which also has modernized sections. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor offers many possibilities, as do the numerous smaller private universities throughout the state.

Snow. Michigan gets plenty of snow-but not, generally, too much. That’s why it’s a frequent winter vacation spot for skiers-and a great possibility for any location shoot that needs acres of picturesque snow everywhere, whether urban or rural.

Unique Places. Michigan’s got plenty of these-from the no-cars-allowed, nineteenth-century village charm of Mackinac Island to a fully functioning ’50s diner (near Rockford) to the harbor terminals of Detroit; from the stone stairs of Castle Rock (leading to a gorgeous limestone tower) to the modest Porcupine Mountains to the enormous Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.

Period charm. Making a historical epic? Michigan offers old-fashioned train stations, ghost towns, model nineteenth-century villages and farms, and one entire town devoted to imitating a German village. Old forts, the Mackinac Island Grand Hotel, and a Frank Lloyd Wright house are among the other oddities available to the state’s visitors.

Urban skylines. Every kind of city location can be found in Detroit, one of America’s most important cities. From skyline shots to warehouses, from unique indoor malls to splendorous downtown buildings, from abandoned urban No Man’s Land to one of America’s wealthiest suburbs, Metro Detroit’s got you covered.

Of course, that’s a lot of traveling. For filmmakers and their personnel visiting any of the above locations, transportation is always needed. Thankfully, at least one Detroit-based company has experience with this kind of thing. Checker Sedan most recently drew praise for its handling transportation needs related to SuperBowl XL. In a letter posted on the company’s website, a celebrity lauds their competence and friendliness, saying, “You didn’t have to welcome us with open arms … but you did.”

Soave Enterprises diversified management and investment company founded by Detroit businessman Anthony Soave that provides strategic planning, financial and other management resources to its affiliated business ventures in the real estate, automotive retailing, beer distribution, scrap metal, industrial services and transportation industries, among others. For more information on Tony Soave and Soave Enterprises, please visit the website.

Sights To See And Places To Visit In Golden State

There is nothing better than driving around California to get the sense and feel about the West Coast, and albeit a taste of Americana. There are so many places to go and things to do that it is impossible to do all these things in one weekend. If you are not from California and are visiting, here are some sights to see and places to visit if you have a week to spare and things to do when in the Golden State:

- San Francisco. This place is so scenic and nice to visit. Pleasant weather. Be sure to visit the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz when you are here. Drive your car in the road which has the most zig zags in the world. Go to Castro Street and Chinatown to feel how the city beats. Fisherman’s Wharf is an ideal place to dine in as well. If you are a tech lover, then visit the Silicon Valley area and see the corporate headquarters of Apple and Google. If you email them in advance, they may even give you a tour of their places. You also need to visit Stanford and Berkley and experience the college lifestyles of prominent universities. For smaller colleges, do visit Santa Clara and St Mary’s College. Don’t forget to take a trip to Napa Valley to experience the wine there. There are many tours that give you the best wine tasting experience but do take the tour bus when doing so to experience the taste of wine without worrying about DUI.

- Los Angeles. If you have the family with you, then take them to Disney land and Universal Studios. That is going to be a memorable experience as well. Visit Hollywood and go to the Chinese Theater to see the imprints of stars past and present. Santa Monica Beach is a great way to enjoy the coast line with its great restaurants and its famous walkway.

- San Diego. Sea World comes to mind when visiting this area but the San Diego Zoo gives any zoo a run for its money. Best Places to Live in Florida for Retirees

Best Places to Live in Florida for Retirees

The best places to live in Florida are not necessarily the ones that you would think of right away. When you think of Florida, what towns or cities come to mind? If you are like most people, you probably think of the capital, Tallahassee, and some of the larger or more famous cities like Miami or Orlando. But depending on what is important to you in a home and a location, you might find that some of the best places to live in Florida for you are a bit off the beaten path.

To determine the best places to live in Florida, it’s important that you first identify what kinds of traits are important to you in a retirement or vacation location. If you are simply interested in moving to Florida for the temperate weather, then you basically have your pick of towns in the state. In that case, the best places to live in Florida would be the ones that have cheap real estate, lower property taxes, but that are still in a size town that offers the kind of facilities that are important to you. You might choose a resort-style town for some good socializing – or avoid towns like Panama City where the college students tend to do too much socializing!

If you have family that you expect will visit you often and that you will need to entertain, then the best places to live in Florida are going to be more dependent on location than the previous example. For example, if you will have children or young families staying with you regularly, you might consider the city of Orlando with all of its theme and amusement parks. Or, you could pick out a location close to the beach where everyone can enjoy long walks, swimming, sun bathing, or even hobbies like metal detecting.

Also think about what needs you have now or could have in the future when you consider the best places to live in Florida. In particular, you may want to consider your current or eventual healthcare needs, if you know what they are. If you have a health condition that requires regular doctor visits, you won’t want to live far from quality medical care.

Another possible factor in your selection of the best places to live in Florida would be whether or not you plan on continuing to work after you relocate to Florida. For example, did you know that the Tampa Bay area is one of the fastest growing in the region? You could move there or to the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville or Orlando areas  if you’ll be looking for work.

Do you want to be surrounded by cultural diversity? That would point to the Miami or Ft. Lauderdale areas. Would you like to live in a town immersed in intellectual and cultural pursuits? Then consider university towns like Jacksonville or Gainesville. The point is that the best places to live in Florida are the ones that meet your needs. So your first job is to figure out exactly what those are!

California gets its “Golden State” nickname from the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s – but also deserves the handle because RVing in California offers a golden opportunity for travelers on the go! As the third largest state in the country, California has so many different landscapes it can seem like all fifty states rolled into one. There’s the desert, the mountains, big cities, small towns and more than 1000 miles of breathtaking coastline. This makes for excellent RVing and countless sightseeing destinations – Here are some ideas on how to enjoy your RVing in California.

California RV Camping and RV Campgrounds: Something for Everyone

There’s such wide geographical variety in California that the state is divided into 12 regions. Each has its own unique natural beauty, man-made splendor – and weather! With all the California terrain and weather differences, research California RV camping and California RV campgrounds specific for your RVing journey and prepare accordingly. There is truly something for everyone who enjoys the outdoors – skiing, boating, fishing, hiking and lots of beach RV campsites.

California RV Camping and RV Parks: A State for all Seasons

It’s hard to imagine covering all of California in one journey (there’s more than 150,000 square miles!) So if you’re flexible, think about when you most want to go on your California RV camping trip. If you’re a snowbird on the run from cold weather at home, you probably won’t want to go to the High Sierra mountains in the winter, as you’ll find snow and low temperatures. Looking for a champagne stopover on a beer budget? Prime time to visit Palm Springs is in the winter, with prices to match, but if you go in the summer-time off-season, RV campsites and RV parks are likely to be more reasonably priced and much more readily available. Make sure though that your air conditioning is working and make room for plenty of sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat!

RVing in California: Visit California’s Greatest Places

Because of the state’s generally mild climate, most RV campsites in California are up and running year-round. If you’re planning on RVing to the Golden State, you might want to concentrate on one area. If you’ve never been to California before, start with some well-know highlights: San Francisco and nearby Muir Woods, then venture further north to wine country, or Southern California known for its Hollywood glamour and some of the most popular attractions in the U.S.A., including Universal Studios, the Getty Center, Venice Beach and of course the happiest place on earth, Disneyland. Be sure to research discounts such as AAA, AARP, groups, etc.!

RVing in California: Visit Fairs & Festivals in Every Flavor

Many people associate California with business, Silicon Valley and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, but did you know California is the nation’s #1 agricultural state? With most harvesting done in the spring and early summer, there’s a bumper crop of festivals celebrating locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Most are cozy, down home events, which benefit regional community organizations. While RVing in California, here’s a tasty sampling:

• Apricot Capitol of the World, Patterson – holds an Apricot Fiesta every year

• Butter & Egg Day in Petaluma commemorates the town’s egg and dairy history

• Gilroy Garlic Festival, in its third decade, attracts over 100,000 visitors a year and

• Asparagus Festival – more than 40,000 pounds of asparagus are consumed annually at the Stockton

Most all of the areas where there are Fairs & Festivals have plenty of RV Parks, RV Campgrounds and RV Camping facilities!

California RV Campgrounds & RV Camping at the Beach!

The beaches of California and the Pacific Coast Highway are world famous, and deservedly so. Beautiful ocean vistas, sand, surf and seasonal glimpses of migrating whales are just some of the more obvious highlights. You can plan an entire California RVing excursion just by driving north or south along the coast. If you’re RVing on the California beaches, consider getting a copy of the California Coast Access Guide, which contains information on more than 890 public access coastal areas, 100+ maps and clear descriptions of RV camping, RV parks, RV campgrounds, trails and recreation areas.

Other places of visit include Snake Alley, Museum of Traffic Control, Hobo Museum, and Hobo Museum. San Francisco, San Diego And Los Angeles – Places To Visit And Sights To See

San Francisco, San Diego And Los Angeles – Places To Visit And Sights To See

There are many nice places to visit in the West Coast, California in particular. San Francisco, for one, seems to have one of the best weather all year round, with everything being moderate. Their summers are not too warm and dry and their winters, albeit chilly, are not extreme in some areas. San Francisco is also home to Silicon Valley where much of the information technology companies are based as well as venture capitalists that have become incubators for some of the start up technology companies. San Francisco also has it’s landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown are part of the main tourism attractions of the city. Visiting universities liker Stanford, Berkley, St Mary’s College and Santa Clara University are also interesting places to go. The city, known for its liberal stance on many issues, including gay rights, is a hodgepodge of people with different ideas, all wanting for tolerance and acceptance that has made the city a sort of sanctuary for liberalism.

San Diego is another nice place to live. It is warm during the days and cool in the evenings. This place is known for its great food, relatively low crime rate, and its coastal yet friendly attitude. One caveat though is that this city has one of the strictest policies on Driving under the Influence. In fact there are specialized DUI attorneys in San Diego whose job it is to keep people from getting convicted from a DUI citation and arrest. The reason for this strict regulation is that it makes the city less prone to DUI related incidents. And perhaps because it borders Mexico, the need for keeping vacationing college kids in check after their time in Mexico is necessary. It is the belief of the city that a DUI related death is truly unnecessary so they play tough in their rules. DUI attorneys make it a point to serve their clients well, especially out of town clients, so that they may not get convicted from a DUI arrest.

Los Angeles is the place to go because of Hollywood and theme parks. Disney Land, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios are just some of the attractions found in the Los Angeles County. It is also known as tinseltown because of the number of film studios that are based there. A lot of actors and actresses are based there or if not, have secondary homes there as well. It is a place where glamour seems to be the norm and for those struggling actors and actresses, this is their mecca.

Don’t let the night be spoiled by having your friends arrested for DUI later on. DUI attorneys San Diego can be very helpful but it would be better to not need their services in the first place. Get a San Diego DUI Defense Lawyer when the hassle becomes inevitable.

Vacation Ideas – 5 Great Places to Visit in Southern California

Are you looking for some great vacation ideas? Consider a trip to Southern California for your next family vacation. While Southern California covers a large area, and there are many fun things to do, here are some great vacation ideas that are definitely worth considering for your next trip.

The first three that I have listed are for those who love beautiful scenery, and enjoy outdoor activities. Big Bear Lake offers beautiful mountain scenery, while Santa Catalina Island and Pismo Beach treat visitors to some of Southern California’s finest beaches. Now, here is some information on each of these areas to wet your vacation appetite.

Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, California is a four seasons resort community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is approximately 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The area offers a wide range of cabin rentals, and vacation rentals for year-round family fun. Activities include boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, skiing, snowboarding and many other fun family activities.

Santa Catalina Island

The island is located just off the coast of Los Angeles across the San Pedro Channel. Passenger ferries depart from Orange County in Newport Beach and Dana Point. Glass bottom boats tour the shipwrecks and reefs in the area, and scuba diving is popular in the clear water. Other activities include snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, world-class golf, para-sailing or relaxing on the beach.

Pismo State Beach

Pismo Beach is located near San Luis Obispo. This park offers a wide variety of activities: hiking, swimming, clam digging, surf fishing, camping, and bird watching. Four restaurants are within 2 blocks of the campground. Pismo Beach has plenty of fun for the entire family.

Disneyland

What list of California vacation ideas could be complete without mentioning Disneyland? You could spend your entire trip at Disneyland and still probably not see everything. A trip to Disney is a vacation highlight for both young and old alike. Disneyland is located near Los Angeles. While visiting the area you may also want to visit Disney’s California Adventure Park, and nearby Universal Studios.

San Diego

Everyone that I have ever talked to that has visited San Diego has enjoyed it. It offers beautiful year-round weather, and there are many things to see and do while you are there. The San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the world. Be sure and visit Sea World while you are there for some fun and excitement. Also, visit a nearby beach, go shopping in Old Town San Diego, or take a stroll through Balboa Park.

Whether you visit Big Bear Lake, Disneyland, San Diego, or one of these other destinations, it will truly be a memorable trip. The main thing is to make time for these special outings with your family, have fun and relax, and create lasting memories. Start planning that special family trip – you deserve it. Have a safe and wonderful trip!
