Evalulating A Social Work School For Your Education And Looking At The Msw Career

Getting your MSW or BSW will put you on the right path for a meaningful career. It is good to do your homework to find out which programs are accredited as well as license-ready. USC Film School – A Review

I attended the undergraduate film program at The University Of Southern California and then proceeded with my film education at New York University where I graduated with a BFA.  During my time at USC I attended numerous classes and worked on several productions of friends that were in the program.  In this short essay I’ll try and give an overview of what I view as the strengths and weaknesses of the program as I see them.

The Location

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is located on the main campus of the University of Southern California which is located just south of downtown Los Angeles in an area bordering what is considered southwest LA.  For those unfamiliar with Los Angeles and USC, the school consists of a well maintained and manicured campus that is enclosed as an ‘oasis’ from the surrounding areas of east LA which are not nearly as nice.

Traditionally, the west side of Los Angeles is what people think of when they think of the beaches and nicer suburban areas as well as Hollywood and Beverly Hills which are just east of the ocean communities but west of USC.  While those living on campus enjoy a nice environment, it is generally accepted that venturing too far away from the main campus is not the best experience with many if not most students choosing to leave during the weekends as the school does have a strong commuter element to it.

The Curriculum

The USC Undergraduate Cinema Program is structured in three tiers, the 200, 300, and 400 level with each tier of courses increasing in complexity and generally relying on the successful completion of those levels below.  While you have a choice between several options depending on your area of interest there are some required classes including the ‘core’ classes of Cinema 310, generally taken in junior year and Cinema 480, generally taken senior year.

Cinema 310 and 480 are the core production classes of the program where students are put into either teams or crews and produce their larger productions.  While Cinema 310 consisted of non-synced sound and 480 was a larger more sync-sound production, things have evolved over the years.  Both courses have a ‘screening’ in a sort of festival at the end of the semester where students show their films to each other and family and friends are invited to view them.  The very best of these can often be used as portfolio pieces to gain representation although usually they are not of the quality or length of the graduate level films.

The facilities of the school of Cinema/Television at USC are outstanding.  George Lucas, one of the school’s notable alumni, has made numerous substantial donations to the school and recently donated 5 million to build a large expansion of the school.  In addition, Steven Spielberg and others have donated money for facilities.  The current school is built like a small studio with notable buildings including The George Lucas Instructional Building, The Steven Spielberg Music Scoring Stage and The Marcia Lucas Post-Production Building.

The Professors

USC has a very good and dedicated staff of professors consisting of both full-time as well as adjunct faculty.  Most professors have an extensive history of working in the feature film and television industries with several having been nominated for Oscars and Emmys.  In the past, the school has had numerous famous faculty including Irving Thalberg, Alfred Hitchcock, D.W. Griffith and Darryll Zanuck.

After Graduation

USC has a very powerful and large alumni network with numerous alum working in virtually every area of Film and Television Production. Only NYU is comparable in numbers and quality of alumni in the industry.  Smart students utilize this resource to gain informational interviews and internships to ease the transition into the work world after graduation.

Cincinnati Schools Woodward High School’s Career Programs

Woodward High School, which is part of Cincinnati Schools, established its career technical programs in 2003 and these programs have been growing ever since. All high schools in the Cincinnati Schools follow a college preparatory curriculum but as part of the restructuring of high schools in the Cincinnati Schools, small specialized courses were developed. Woodward Career Technical High School is not only a resurrected small school but a replacement school for the razzed Woodward High School. Students began attending school in the new building in 2005. Theses career technical programs focus on the students’ needs for knowledge in the career technology fields and hands on experience that will give the students an edge in further education pursuits and the future job market.

The Woodward Career Technical High School is designed to give students a smaller, more centered learning environment that will better prepare students for their future. The Aiken’s Public Service Learning High School program offers students the chance to earn college level credit for the work the students do. Students will have the chance to work with professionals in law enforcement, firefighters, and the emergency medical field. Gonzaga University Athletic Director Mike Roth made the most astute move since the hiring of Mark Few as his basketball coach by recently hiring legendary high school coach Pat Tyson as Gonzaga’s first full-time running coach.

Roth could not have found a better choice than Tyson, who has not yet had a full-time opportunity to run a complete college cross-country and track and field program.

Tyson just completed the spring season as the track coach for South Eugene High School in Oregon. He spent last season coaching the cross-country teams and distance runners at the University of Kentucky.

Apparently his coaching methods did not go over as well in the south as in the Pacific Northwest, where he built a sterling reputation for success in Eastern Washington at Mead High School. In 19 years

Private School Fees On The Rise

Dear Mr. Bradshaw — As a parent, I worry about the high cost of tuition to attend a private college. The more I look into schools like Butler University or Boston College, the more I realize they are out of my price range.

I know financial aid is available, but I don’t want my son to end up graduating with thousands of dollars in student loans. And I don’t want to end up paying them off with my Social Security check.

We can afford to pay for a public college education without going into debt. If we don’t want to go into debt, does this mean a private college is out of the question?

He’s a great student and did well on his SAT, which you constantly stress is important, scoring 680-720 on each test. I hope you have a solution. A lot of our friends are in the same situation — An Average Parent

Dear Average Parent — Yes, there is a way to attend a private college without going into debt. The key is the amount of time you are willing to spend searching for the right college.

As you said, Boston College and Butler are expensive, with estimated annual costs of ,000 to ,000. Plus, the cost of living in Boston is much higher than Indianapolis.

Financial aid is available at both schools, but under each program, students must be prepared to take out loans as part of the overall package.

From the description of your son’s outstanding academic numbers, he is qualified to apply to what are called no-loan colleges. Several colleges have dropped loans as part of their financial aid packages and have replaced them with direct grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid.

Amherst College, the University of North Carolina, and Davidson College maintain no-loan policies as part of their financial aid offerings, along with Princeton, Yale and Stanford. In other words, if your son gets admitted to a no-loan college, officials there will make it easier for him to attend without going into debt.

The general rule is, families making less than ,000 a year aren’t required to pay anything toward their children’s educations.

Families making up to 0,000 per year pay only 10 percent of their gross income.

Most of these colleges do not count home equity when computing aid, although families having assets unusually large for their income levels may see the amount of aid they receive reduced.

Children, regardless of family income levels, will be expected to make a contribution to their educations, but that number is typically small and funded by work-study jobs of fewer than 10 hours per week.

Haverford College, a top liberal arts school in Pennsylvania, is typical of no-loan financial aid colleges. It is very selective; only 27 percent of applicants get in, the same percentage as Notre Dame.

A word of caution: Most top colleges began no-loan policies at the peak of their endowment performances, when they were growing at a rate of 20 percent per year. There is no guarantee they will continue their charitable policies in the wake of the recession. Williams College revoked its no-loan financial aid policy earlier this month after losing 0 million the last three years.
