Which Film School Is Best? NYU or USC?

Which Film School Is Best? NYU or USC?

As one of only a select few people who has attended both of the leading film schools, I thought I should offer my experience to discuss the two.  New York University and University of Southern California have vied for some time for title of having the ‘best’ film school.  While there are certainly other quality programs out there including AFI, UCLA and others, USC and NYU, due to the number of illustrious alumni, the long history of their programs and the reputation each has are perceived to be at the top of the heap.  So how are they different and is one or the other really the ‘best’?  As I’ll explain, the answer is actually not so simple and really depends on what kind of film education you are trying to experience.

The first issue of comparison is location.  NYU is located in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City while USC is located just south of downtown Los Angeles.  At first this might seem an even draw.  After all, they are both great cities, just in different ways.  In my experience however, they offer two very different advantages/disadvantages with respect to their film schools.  New York is by far the more dynamic and action packed of the two cities.  The Tisch Film School is located in a very young, hot part of the city and attending school there provides immense stimulation and interaction with the great mix of New York inhabitants.

NYU does not have a traditional campus, but instead has several dozen buildings spread throughout the Greenwich Village area. While this does not provide the ‘protected’ feel of an enclosed campus such as  USC’s, it actually makes for a much more exciting experience living in New York City.  USC’s film school on the other hand is located in a section of LA which is somewhat less desirable.  While only a short drive down the freeway or across town to Hollywood or the more upscale Westside, the immediate vicinity around the campus is not the greatest area and can potentially be unsafe at night if more than a few blocks outside the campus grounds.

The lack of a good subway or public transit system in LA means that a student will be ‘stuck’ on campus without a car or at least without friends or access to a car.  While the proximity to the film industry, the studios and the many post production houses in LA do offer value to the student for internships and such, my view is that during school, New York offers such a substantially better living environment that it outweighs those benefits.  After graduation after all, many NYU graduates make the move to LA anyway

The next notable factor between the two schools has to do with their size.  NYU has a much larger program in sheer numbers with up to 1000 students enrolled at any one time in the film school when considering all the years of the program.  USC has a smaller total size school of several hundred which makes for smaller classes and greater one on one access to professors.  Also, the equipment tends to be in better condition at USC because of considerably less number of students using the limited amount.  In this respect I give USC the edge.

However, one advantage of the larger NYU program comes after graduation.  The sheer number of NYU graduates in the industry make it easier to network in my opinion.  While there is certainly a strong Trojan network that should not be dismissed, I found in my years in LA that I ran across many more NYU Tisch grads than I did the USC film program.  While this does not necessarily mean that is a higher ‘success’ rate among NYU grads, it does offer more networking opportunities and ‘contacts’ at more companies.  For more insight into the NYU and USC Film programs please visit my site at www.USCFilmSchool.com.

Buying a Sweater and Choosing a Film School – Are There Some Common Threads?

Category : Region III

Buying a Sweater and Choosing a Film School – Are There Some Common Threads?

If one is considering the purchase of a sweater, it is essential to know more about yourself that the actual sweater when you begin shopping. What are your demands for color and size, do you want pull over, “v” neck, or buttons, what materials do you like, should it be washable or is dry cleaning acceptable, what about weave, design and cost? These are just a few of the questions that must be answered about yourself and your desires before consummating the experience with a purchase. However, since we have probably shopped on numerous occasions, we are very familiar with our criteria for making a selection.

Selecting the right film school is similar, but more exhausting since this is not something that we do frequently. In fact a task like this is often done only once, so it is incumbent on the shopper to prepare themselves fully so the final selection can deliver the results that will lead one to a rewarding and fulfilling experience. The place to start demands that the candidate for film school assess their individual desires, needs, interests, capabilities, motivation, ability to finance, present educational attainment, and an additional host of other considerations about a particular field of film making. Additionally one has to understand that upon graduation they are now qualified as a neophyte in the business and a number of years of hard work are necessary to even achieve a modicum of success.

Think of the number of singers and performers that start out as youngsters and the number that eventually end up in the professional ranks. Consider all the aspiring actors and actresses and then look at the number that actually achieve stardom. Do you want to be the star or would you be just as happy and fulfilled as a member of the supporting cast?

The picture that is being painted here is not about crushing a dream, it is about the reality of any business and especially the extremely competitive nature of the film making industry. If you have not stopped reading yet, perhaps you have the character and motivation to continue to pursue a path in this career field.

Let’s start with some self assessment.

Have Some Experience?

Why do you believe that a career in the film making industry is for you? What was the most fulfilling experience? Why? What was a downer? Have you narrowed your interest to a particular specialty of film making like actor, director, cinematographer, writer or perhaps some other phase such as film editing, set design or costume making? You have an edge over others with no experience and this provides a bit firmer footing than those without. There are many more questions that could be asked, but the purpose of this line of questions is to lead you on the right path. If your fulfilling experience was significantly better than any “downer”, that is positive. However a “downer” that is more memorable may be an indicator that the path you have selected might not be where your real success is located.

No Experience

The question here is why? Why do you want to purse a career in the film making industry? You probably need to find more information about this career field. There are a variety of ways to learn more. Here are a few suggestions. Take a course. Virtually every college in the land has a number of offerings centered around film making. Join a club. Again college campuses are the place where numerous clubs are located, however a search of the Internet revealed that there are many clubs located in a number of cities and towns. Browse the web. Sites such as http://www.filmschools.cc can provide information about the gamut of opportunities available in the industry. Just do it! Many people gain experience by picking up a video camera, gathering friends together, producing short films and then editing the video using a variety of software tools that are readily available. Find work. There are many feature films that are produced in various places around the country. Almost every state has a film bureau where information is available about productions that are planned or scheduled and there are usually positions open for extras. There are also many positions when a film is being produced for “gofers”. These are odd job positions available during the time of the shooting. This is an excellent way to observe and learn about the many activities that take place when a film is being produced.

Character

Does your personality compliment your interests? Do you like being in charge or would you rather someone else provide some direction? Do you work better with a team or are you most efficient individually? Are you someone that is interested in general ideas or do you have a need to learn all the technical specifications? Do you read the directions when putting a product together or do you just look at the pictures and start work? Do you plan your day or just let it happen? How do you learn best? Are you a read and study person or are you a hands-on learner. Are you ready to attack the rigors of a four year course of study or would on-line self paced be a better fit? Answering these questions will help to determine what field of film making might best suit your style and temperment.

The Scene

The previous paragraphs provide the basis for some of the things that you need to know about yourself prior to embarking in the search for a career field in the film making industry that will lead to happiness, prosperity and fulfillment.

The potential film school student needs to be able to identify their unique skills, interests and competencies and then match those to specific careers, jobs and professions. They need to honestly identify character strengths and weaknesses associated with a potential career. There are certain personality traits and requisite characteristics that are generally associated with a particular career field and while they are not necessarily indicative of success, they certainly can identify those that might have a difficult time. For instance, an individual that does not like to be the constant center of attention might want to rethink an acting career.

If there is any uncertainty in your mind, actually even if there is certainty, a career assessment test will t provide clarity for you. These type of tests assist you in identifying career paths that will compliment your learning style, personality and social skills. There are a multitude of these tests that can be completed in a relatively short time and may serve to reinforce your chosen career field or even cause you to make an adjustment to a field with a better fit for you. They are available at no cost in most college career offices, from high school guidance counselors or you can find them on the Internet.

The Princeton Review offers a quick assessment on-line that will serve to illuminate the type of information that can be obtained by completing one or more of these types of assessments. This test only takes about 5 minutes to complete and might provide some useful insight to your own character. The site address is http://www.princetonreview.com/cte/quiz/default.asp?menuID=0&careers=6%20.

It is recommended that a more in-depth assessment be completed, but the idea of what the results might reveal is presented in a clear and concise manner at the Princeton Review site. The University of Missouri also has a web-site that provides some information that may prove insightful. That web address is http://career.missouri.edu/students/explore/thecareerinterestsgame.php. In addition to these two sites there are many more places where you can complete a career assessment test which will prove extremely useful and informative.

You will save significant amounts of time searching for the right opportunities in the film making industry and securing the job of your dreams because you will be lining up the demands of the job with your personality skills and talents.

Job descriptions

At this point, you have assessed your character and personality style and have discovered that there is a future for you in the film making industry. Perhaps you have an idea about a specific career choice or perhaps it needs to be narrowed down. In either case it is instructive to review exactly what is involved in particular jobs. Reading and reviewing a variety of job descriptions and responsibilities can provide insight into the demands of a position as well as provide information about courses that should be pursued to provide the educational background essential for success. Job descriptions can provide information about general educational needs as well as specific technical proficiencies that may be required.

There are numerous areas that can be browsed on the web which will provide a wealth of information. Two that proved helpful were en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Movie_Making_ and http://www.devondelapp.com/weblog/?entry=229889.

The wiki site has significant amounts of information with a myriad of associated links that should satisfy the basic knowledge need of anyone interested in film making. The second site is a blog about the experiences of an individual that served as a production assistant (PA) for a television shoot. The blog is perceptive and insightful and offers those interested a peek inside bowels of the film making business.

Selecting a School

Hopefully, you have now learned about yourself and have identified a potential career path. The selection of a school must be based on a number of factors that are uniquely personal. Probably the first consideration is cost, but location, courses offered, prestige of the school, the likely match of your talents with their prerequisites and several other factors must be addressed prior to making a final decision

A career can be successfully launched based on courses selected from a community college where tuition and fees are substantially lower than schools that offer a four year course of study. It may be financially prudent to initially start an education at a community college and then transfer to a four year institution with a more recognizable name. If this path is selected it is important to insure that the community college courses will properly transfer to the four year institution so it is necessary to confirm that by discussing your plans with a community college career counselor that is familiar with requirements and processes involved in the transfer of credits.

There are numerous four year colleges and universities that provide courses of study that lead to a bachelors degree applicable to some phase of the film making industry. Matching your needs and requirements with the appropriate college or university offerings will save time and insure that you are traveling on the right path.

It is important to consider your educational skill and talents with the institution you are considering. Some institutions offer nuts and bolts, hands on instruction while others offer more cerebral instruction that is intellectually demanding. It is critical to match your talents and abilities with the course of study you will be pursuing.

Some individuals that want to pursue a film making career may already have acquired a bachelors degree and now want to obtain an additional degree or simply take specialized courses. Schools such as the New York Film Academy offer a variety of courses that can respond to this need. There site at http://www.nyfa.com/ provides all the information necessary for a prospective student. If cost is a consideration, there tuition of ,000 to ,000 per semester may present a hurdle.

In all cases it is important to visit the school that you are thinking of attending to gather your first-hand impressions. You should talk to school representatives as well as students to obtain the most comprehensive view. Also, you should take a tour of the school grounds and facilities to insure that their film making equipment will provide state of the art training and experiences.

Review

Purchasing a sweater and selecting a film making school do have a common thread, however it is undeniably more difficult to select a school. However, if you diligently take the time to research all the viable alternatives to successfully pursue a film making career, you will find that it is time well spent. The planning required to make the best selection that fits your individual needs and desires will pay off handsomely in the future by enabling you to have a fulfilling experience.

Juggling Work and School Pays Off With Rewarding Careers

Juggling Work and School Pays Off With Rewarding Careers

Are you thinking about juggling work and school? Chances are you’re not alone. With the rising cost of living, along with increasing financial pressures, about 85 percent of part-time college students are employed, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. And this trend will only continue, as shortages in the workplace increase, especially among healthcare workers.

But although combining a job with education—as well as family commitments—can be a tough balancing act, experts say that learning always pays off in the long run. Whether your goal is to be a medical or dental assistant, or pursue opportunities as a pharmacy technician or optical dispenser, with a little advance planning and wise time management, it’s easy to advance your career.

Here are some tips for managing the challenge of attending your local career college while still earning an income—and how to make the most of your current work and school experience:

            * Choose a job with flexible hours: Whether you attend classes in the daytime or evening, there are plenty of employers who are willing to offer different shifts and schedule your working hours around your schooling. You might want to initially work a manageable amount of hours, and then, if you feel comfortable taking on more, ask your employer to add on additional days or work time.

            * Ask about financial aid: Money should never be an obstacle to your success. If you’re unable to meet your educational costs, ask your college financial aid office if you qualify for funding. Often students have several options for tuition payment. Grants and low-interest government loans are available based on financial need.

            * Cut back on expenses: Look at your budget and trim costs wherever you can, whether they be personal care, commuting, clothing, phone bills, entertaining and dining, or other expenditures. Remember that you will enjoy higher earnings when you finally receive your certificate of completion, which more than pays for your current sacrifices. This will be sooner than you realize, since many career college programs take only eight to 10 months to complete.

            * Ask for help: Don’t sweat the details—your career college can help you with the day-to-day issues that can seem overwhelming. If you need public transportation information, carpooling contacts, or child-care referrals, the school’s student services office can provide advice. A New Occupation Can be the Reward for Balancing a Job and School at the Same Time

If you are thinking about working while going to school, there’s a good chance you’re not the only one. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that with the cost of living becoming higher all the time, and with mounting financial stresses, nearly 85 percent of college students have jobs. In addition, as shortages in the workplace continue to increase, particularly among health care workers in the Los Angeles area, this trend is expected to continue.

Even though being employed while going to school — combined with family obligations — can be hard to balance, professionals say that learning pays off at the end of the road. Whether you are aiming to be a medical or dental assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse or aspire to be a pharmacy technician or optical dispensing technician, when you plan ahead and budget your time it is not hard to go further in your career.

Following are several suggestions from LANursingDegree.com for handling the struggle of going to a local career college or nursing school while you are working, as well as how to make your current work and school situation a positive experience. First, find a job with adjustable hours. Regardless of whether your classes are during the day or evening hours, there are many employers who are agreeable to giving you a choice of which shifts you want to work, and who will plan your work schedule around your school hours. When you first start working, you may only be able to handle of few hours of employment, but as you adjust, you can request that your boss give you more days or hours to work.

Inquire about financial assistance: You should never let money prevent you from achieving success. If you can’t afford to pay for your education, ask the financial aid office at your college if you are eligible for funds. There are often several options available to students for tuition payment. There are grants and government loans with low interest rates, according to what students need financially.

Spend less money: Go over your budget and find out what areas you could cut back on. Perhaps you could cut expenses for personal care, travel, clothes, telephone bills, entertainment, eating out, or some other way. Keep in mind that your current sacrifices will be more than paid for when you finally receive your certificate or degree and begin enjoying higher earnings. Since many career college programs require only eight to ten months to complete, this could be sooner than you think.

Request assistance: Don’t worry about every little thing; your career college is able to help you with the daily problems that seem to be too much for you to handle. The student services office at your school can give you information about public transportation, people who you can carpool with, or even recommend a babysitter. In addition, students can get help with resolving personal conflicts and assistance with many other personal requirements.

Gain knowledge from your experiences at your current job: It doesn’t make a difference where you are presently employed; make it a point to study how they conduct their business. This knowledge will be priceless when you search for your next job. Think of every job interview as an occasion to put your skills into practice. When you are close to completing your education contact your career college’s job placement assistance department for assistance in securing a position in your preferred line of work. They can coach you on interviewing skills, as well as guide and advise you in your career planning.

Look for jobs that are in your chosen area of study: All experience is helpful when beginning a career in a new field. For instance, if you have an interest in becoming a dental assistant, maybe you can gain experience by obtaining an entry-level job before you complete your program and graduate.

Create a schedule and follow it: Make arrangements for studying, working and relaxing. In order to concentrate on your lab work and homework assignments more completely, make sure to stay well rested. Tell your friends and families that you need time to study without being interrupted. Virginia Study Links Teen Accidents With Early School Start Times

Virginia Study Links Teen Accidents With Early School Start Times

Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in the US, and a new study presented at the American Academy of Sleep Societies suggests an early school day may lead to an increased number of teenage car accidents. Any new insights into this terrible epidemic could save thousands of teenage lives every year.

The study in question compared the 2008 crash rates of high school students in two adjacent Virginia towns. The author of the study was Dr. Robert Vorona, an associate professor of internal medicine in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA.

Dr. Vorona relied on the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles for data on the accident rates among drivers aged 16 to 18 in the two towns. The two Virginia towns, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, have similar demographics but start high school an hour and twenty minutes apart, 7:20 am and 8:40 am respectively. The study found that Virginia Beach, with its 7:20 am start time, had 65.4 crashes per 1,000 teen drivers compared to Chesapeake’s, with its 8:40 am start time, 46.2 crashes per 1,000 teens. These figures equate out to a 41% difference in teen driver crashes.

Dr. Vorona will not outright make a direct correlation between teenage car crashes and early high school start times. He is quoted as saying, “This study did not prove by any means that early high school start times led to increased rates of car crashes. Instead, it shows an association between early risers and car crashes.”

Dr. Vorona does however believe that when combined with other research, he suggests pushing for later start times, and goes onto to say that, “Early high school start times are problematic.” Speaking on these later start times, Dr. Vorona goes on to say, “Teenagers need over nine hours sleep a night, and it looks like a large number of teens don’t get sufficient sleep…part of that relates to the time that high schools begin.”

Studies done on teen behavior agree with Dr. Vorona. “There are data that demonstrate that lack of sleep has negative consequences for teens,” he said. “And some data show that younger drivers are more likely to have crashes when they have inadequate sleep.”

A leading Kansas City auto accident attorney and Dr. Barbara Phillips, of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, both agree with Dr. Vorona’s claims. Dr. Phillips believes that teens are “biologically programmed” to become sleepy and wake up later than adults. “They truly can’t help it. They’re just not going to get sleepy at 10 p.m., so it’s hard for them to get the eight to 10 hours of sleep they need to get when they have to catch the 7:30 bus,” she says.

When you combine the lack of sleep with the act of driving, things turn dangerous. “Younger, inexperienced drivers don’t fare well with additional handicaps such as impaired alertness caused by having to get up earlier than is natural for them,” said Dr. Phillips. A leading Kansas City car crash attorney has witnessed first hand the dangerous combination that sleep-deprivation and driving can be.

Much like Dr. Vorona in Virginia, Dr. Phillips co-authored a study comparing car crash rates and the sleep of teen drivers. Hers in 1998 compared the crash rates for teens in Lexington, Kentucky after the school district instituted a later school start with the previous two years before the change in start time. The results of the study were conclusive; crash rates declined 16.5% in a period where teenage crash rates actually increased in the state of Kentucky by 7.8%.

Perhaps more states should listen to the research of Dr. Vorona and Dr. Phillips as well as the observations of Kansas City car crash attorneys and Kansas City auto accident attorneys everywhere and move high school start times back. The argument against doing so is that early start times allow for after school sports; there has to be a compromise because the world cannot afford to lose one more teenager to a car crash before their time.

Juggling Work and School Can Pay Off

Juggling Work and School Can Pay Off

Are you considering pursuing a career while juggling school and work? You’re not alone in thinking that this may be the answer. According to the National Center for Education, with costs of living and financial pressures increasing, approximately 85 percent of part-time college students are employed. This trend will go on, specifically among healthcare workers in the area of Los Angeles.

While having a job along with going to school and meeting family commitments can be hard to balance, experts say that it is worth it in the long haul. If your dream is a career as a medical or dental assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or if you want to look for opportunities as a pharmacy technician or optical dispenser, when you plan for the future and manage your time wisely, career advancement can be attainable.

OntarioHealthCareSchools.com has advice to help people with the trials of going to a local career college or a nursing school while they are working to make money, and how they can get the most advantages from their current employment and education. Students should find employment with hours that are flexible. If you go to school at a certain time of day, many employers will let you work on another shift and arrange your work time around your school time. Initially, you might want to work a manageable number of hours. Then, if you are comfortable taking on more, ask your employer to add additional work time or days.

Don’t let money hinder your goals; instead, ask about financial aid. If you can’t afford the cost of an education, ask for funding from your college financial aid office. Many students do not fully understand the tuition payment process and will have questions. Based on your financial position, you may receive a government grant or loan at a low-interest.

While working, look at your budget and, where you can, spend less on unnecessary expenses. For instance you may be able to cut back in clothes, personal care, travel, entertainment, and food expenses. Remember that your reward will be higher pay when you earn your certificate or degree, which will make your current sacrifices worth the trouble. It may happen sooner than you realize, because many programs can be completed in as little as ten months.

Don’t sweat the details; ask for help. Your career college will help you with day to day issues that might seem overwhelming. If you need information about public transportation, people to contact for carpooling, or someone to watch your child, you can find advice at the student services office at your school. The people there can even assist students with issues such as conflict resolution, or other personal needs.

Use your current job as a learning tool: Even if your present day job is not where you see yourself in the future, you should still study the operations of the organization. When it comes time to look for your next job, this could prove to be invaluable knowledge. Think of each job interview as an excellent chance to hone your skills. Then speak with the job placement assistance department at your career college, when you’re nearing the completion of your certificate, for assistance in finding a job in your chosen profession. The assistants will be there to guide you in the direction you need for success. They will aid you in planning for your career, as well as extend your interviewing skills to the fullest. They want you to succeed and are happy to help in any way they can.

When looking for a job, try to find something that relates to your education. When entering a new field, experience counts, no matter how small. If you want to become a dental assistant, for instance, you could get your feet wet with an entry-level job before finishing your degree.

Arrange a schedule and be faithful to it: A specific amount of time should be reserved for studying, work, and rest. To be sure you’re able to concentrate on your homework assignments and lab work, make sure you are well-rested. Make your friends and family aware that you have to study without being interrupted. An Exciting New Career Can be the Motivation for Juggling Work and School

Are you thinking about juggling school and work? A new job can really be the pay off. It is highly likely that you are not alone when facing this issue. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, as a result of increasing financial pressures, including the rising cost of living, some 85 percent of college students are now employed part-time. This trend is for the long-term. Consider for example that in the Los Angeles area, shortages in the workplace continue to increase, especially among healthcare workers.

Working, furthering your education, and maintaining family commitments can be challenging, but in the long run, it pays off. With a bit of advanced planning and smart time management, it’s easy to advance your career whether your goal is to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse, or a medical or dental assistant, or to pursue employment opportunities as an optical dispenser or a pharmacy technician.

LAMedicalTraining.com offers the following tips to help students handle the strains of attending a local career college or nursing school while working, and to help students take full advantage of their work and school experience.

Select a job that will allow for a flexible schedule: There are a lot of employers out there who understand the need to work while getting an education and they will be willing to offer you different shifts, and to schedule you around your class times, regardless of whether you take day or evening classes. At first, you may want to work a minimum schedule, and then, if and when you feel able to handle more, ask your employer to increase your hours.

Look for financial aid: Money should never come between you and success; financial aid is there to help you achieve your goals. Check with your college’s financial aid office to see if you qualify for funding if you are unable to meet your educational costs. Usually, students have several different options for paying their tuition bill. For those with financial need, grants and low-interest federal loans are readily available.

Cut your expenses: One thing to remember while you are working and going to school is to streamline your living and personal expenses so you can decrease your overall budget. Keep in mind that when you receive your certificate of completion, your higher earnings will reward all the hard work you did. Since many career college programs can be completed in only eight to ten months, this may come sooner than you realize.

Ask for assistance: If you’re sweating the details, remember that your career college is there to assist you with any help that you might need. You’ll find the school’s student service office can help you with transportation information, contacts, or even daycare referrals for your children. Assistance with conflict resolution and other personal needs are even available to students.

Draw from your current job experience: Whatever your job title is, be sure to take note of the ins and outs of the way your organization works; you’ll find that this is invaluable knowledge to have when it comes to the progression of your career path. Think of every job interview as an opportunity to sharpen your skills. Staying in touch with your career placement department as you approach completion of your certificate will better assist you in finding placement in your chosen profession. They will be more than willing to assist you in career advising, planning, and to help you with successful interview techniques.

Seek out work that is related to your education: When entering a new industry, any experience helps. It’s quite possible to get an entry-level position in your desired field before you even graduate.

The best way to ensure a healthy schedule, while working and going to school, is to set aside time to work, study, and relax. For the best levels of concentration on your homework and lab assignments, it is best to make sure you have plenty of rest. It is important to let your friends and family know that you need quiet, uninterrupted time to devote to your studies.
