State Schools Get Selective

Category : Region III

State Schools Get Selective

Dear Mr. Bradshaw I’m a junior at Carmel (Ind.) High School. We are a large school, with more than 4,500 students. Everyone seems to be involved in some kind of sport or extracurricular activity. I’m a top student, but not involved in any activities because I have to work after school and on weekends.

I’m not planning to apply to an Ivy League school; I’d be happy to go to Indiana University. Ball State is my second choice, with Butler a long shot, as my family would have a hard time paying private tuition.

My question is, do I need to get involved in extracurriculars in order to have a chance at IU?

My SAT scores are only average. Several teachers and my guidance counselor say it’s getting harder to get into IU because of the increasing number of out-of-state applicants. Is this true? — Concerned Junior

Junior — I agree it is getting harder to get admitted to Indiana University in Bloomington.

The number of out-of-state students applying to IU is up again this year. On top of that, IU is experiencing an increase in the number of students transferring from expensive private colleges.

If you add to the mix the increase in international students on campus, there are, indeed, fewer seats for Indiana residents. This is a growing trend at many state universities. Flagship universities like IU, the University of Wisconsin and University of Michigan are under pressure to admit more state residents. But budget pressures continue to build. Full-tuition-paying, nonresident students are becoming the largest sources of income for many state universities.

In addition, with colleges like Harvard and Stanford offering generous financial-aid packages, it often is less expensive to attend a premier private college than a top state school. That trend often siphons off top state students who normally would help state colleges keep their U.S. News & World Report rankings — and these rankings often play a decisive role on where the best students apply.

So it is a vicious cycle to attract top scholars while bringing in full-tuition-paying students.

To counter the brain drain, IU has upped the ante by offering the Wells Scholarship to our best state scholars. But that is not enough to balance the deficit.

In previous years, 30-35 percent of IU students were nonresidents paying full out-of-state tuition.

If it seems IU is working against you, I can understand. It sends contradictory messages when it recruits out-of-state as vigorously as it does.

It is widely known that officials from IU and other flagship state universities make annual visits to New York high schools, searching for top candidates. The net result is about 37 percent of this year’s undergraduates at IU are not Indiana residents.

Working in your favor is that most state schools follow the “whole applicant” rule when making admissions choices. In that sense, they are becoming more like private colleges. They focus on admitting a more diverse student body.

That means if you have to work after school and can’t participate in extracurricular activities, be sure to tell them about it in the application. A job can be as important to the admissions committee as a solid letter of reference or playing a sport.

But the pressure is on. That should be a warning not to let up with your studies, even if you must carry an outside job.

On the other hand, if you add together a strong academic record and work, they might be the right formula to get you in.

Gerald Bradshaw spent nearly 15 years interviewing students for Harvard College before he started Bradshaw College Consulting. As an alumni interviewer he gained tremendous insights into the admissions process–and not just at Harvard—but also across the board at all selective colleges and universities. Scabies In Schools And Nursing Homes

Category : Pharmacy Students

Scabies In Schools And Nursing Homes

In Florida, I’ve recently heard of three nursing homes in the area that had scabies cases. A client of mine at the mental health clinic told me that she couldn’t get elimite at the local pharmacy as it had sold out. Her child had picked it up at the local child care center from another student. I spoke to a nurse at the mental health clinic where I work and she said that she feels itchy when leaving the assisted living facility she works at one time a week but she’s never contracted scabies.

Scabies are very tiny mites so they can’t be seen by the naked eye. They can be spread by skin contact such as holding hands and sexual relations, as well as by sharing clothing or bedding. Kids play very close to each other and get into wrestling and close contact looking at baseball cards, cell phone pictures and coloring together. At nursing homes people sit next to each other watching tv, hug each other for support and sometimes share clothing with their roommates. Sharing head phones can spread it as well and kids tend to do this with ipods often.

With scabies you may first itch before you notice the rash. Common spots are the arm pits, webs of fingers, wrists, stomach area and buttocks. Kids can get scabies on their faces but adults generally don’t. You may also see the little burrow lines that are white, grey or red where the female egg zig zags under your skin to lay the eggs. These are difficult to see due to their thinness.

Permethrin cream is applied to the skin and left on over night to kill the scabies. At the same time, a thorough wash is needed in very hot water for the clothing and bedding. After 24 hours kids can go back to school, but be aware that if other kids are carrying scabies or untreated, one can get re-infected. This is one reason why they foud that a nursing home kept having residents re-infected. People weren’t treated that had scabies and when they were, they didn’t apply the cream under the nails. This is an important area that gets forgotten. When people scratch themselves , they can easiy spread what’s under their finger nails to others. Scabies is not difficult to treat, but it needs to be done properly and with attention to detail.

Detroit Schools Partner for Engineering Success

Category : Region III

Detroit Schools Partner for Engineering Success

The Detroit Schools has partnered with local universities to get students thinking about careers in science and engineering. Students at different levels of the Detroit Public Schools are being targeted in a statewide effort to get more women and minorities enrolled in engineering programs. One program that makes this its mission is the Detroit Area Pre College Engineering Program (DAPCEP).

The Detroit Area Pre College Engineering Program

DAPCEP works with area students in three main ways. It partners with local public school teachers to design a curriculum that encourages creative thinking in the sciences. To fulfill this goal, DAPCEP sponsors science fairs, field trips, and university seminars for students and teachers.

DAPCEP also runs a Saturday program in conjunction with local universities and corporations to provide enrichments activities for students in grades 4 – 12. These activities focus on different aspects of math, computer science, engineering, physics, chemistry, and communication skills.

In addition to its programs during the school year, DAPCEP brings local public school students into universities for summer programs. Some of the summer programs are residential, with students living on campus for a few weeks and getting a real taste for the college life. Other programs provide transportation to and from campus.

University Partnerships

DAPCEP’s list of university partners is certainly impressive.

• University of Detroit Mercy

• Michigan State University

• University of Michigan Ann Arbor

• Wayne State University

• Lawrence Technical University

• Oakland University

• University of Michigan Dearborn

• Michigan Technological University

The Little Engineer Program

In addition to their very successful middle school and high school programs, DAPCEP also has something for smaller learners. Its Little Engineer Program is for students in grades K – 3. These Saturday classes for both children and their parents focus on teaching and learning math, science, pre-engineering, and reading.

How to Join DAPCEP

The selection process for DAPCEP can be daunting for parents anxious to give this opportunity to their children. DAPCEP holds an open house each fall for prospective students and parents. Students must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average in all their school subjects. Other factors, such as attendance, and taking certain academic subjects in the regular school curriculum, such as physics, chemistry, and higher level math, also play a role in student selection. For many programs, students also need letters of recommendation from their math and science teachers.

Summer Course Offerings

DAPCEP’s university partnerships are providing a range of summer courses of Detroit area students. Here are some highlights:

• Watershed Investigators (University of Detroit Mercy)

Students will investigate local water quality in a series of real – world experiments.

• How Math Rocks Our World (Tabernacle)

Students will see how their math and science skills compare with other students around the world, in particular China and India.

• Wireless Integrated Microsystems (Michigan State University)

Hands – on activities and presentations from nine different engineering majors offered at the university.

• Engineering Intensive Workshop ( Michigan Technological University)

Students choose two areas of study, ranging from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Aided Engineering, Computer Programming, Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering and others.

All of the DAPCEP programs emphasize the Detroit Area Public School District’s commitment to ensuring that students have the opportunity to explore many challenging areas and gain further insights into the college experience.

Securing Admission into ABA Accredited Law Schools

Category : Region I

Securing Admission into ABA Accredited Law Schools

The business of accrediting a law school in the United States is conducted by the American Bar Association (ABA). There are 200 ABA accredited law schools in the United States, distributed in 49 out of the 50 states that make up America. Alaska is the only state that does not have a law school.

ABA accreditation is presently not extended to law schools that offer their programs as a distant-learning (online) degree. It is also pertinent to note that not all law schools have full accreditation. Six law schools have only provisional accreditation status by the ABA. These are:

1) University of Laverne College of Law

2) Charlotte School of Law, North Carolina

3) Elon University School of Law, located in Greensboro, North Carolina

4) Earle Mack School of Law, Drexel University, in Pennsylvania

5) Charleston School of Law, Charleston, North Carolina

A full list of the ABA accredited law schools in the United States is available from the American Bar Association website (www.abanet.org)

Admission Requirements

A Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is required for all intending law students. The scores and cut-off points vary from school to school. In addition, most law schools require that a prospective candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, and a satisfactory undergraduate grade point average (GPA). Additional factors are evaluations through essays, short-answer questions, as well recommendations from reputable individuals. If a candidate can secure a recommendation from a reputable lawyer, that will help a long way to speak for the candidate.

There are other requirements that are specific to schools. Candidates are advised to look up the law guides published by the ABA as guides before making a decision on which law school to attend. This is the best approach when seeking law school admission.

They must also work well with people as they will need to find out what their clients want and be able to provide it for them. Remember, it’s not about what the designer wants, but what the client wants! Interior designers must also have the ability to plan well as it is often impossible to buy all the decorations and furniture and then return it. So to avoid hassles like these, interior designers often plan spaces with the use of a computer and decide everything before they buy anything.

The best interior design schools provide a variety of general courses and courses that are aimed at qualified designers who want to become an expert on a particular aspect of interior design. Most people start with an associate or bachelor degree in interior design before embarking upon a speciality subject of study, generally after gaining some employment experience.
