Wanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. Her smart-witted stand up has sent her career in many different areas.

Sykes recently debuted in her own late night talk show on Fox. The Wanda Sykes Show will be weekly and airs on Saturday nights. In October she was seen in her second HBO stand up special I’ma Be Me. Sykes also returns as “Barb” on the CBS comedy THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE.

Her HBO comedy special WANDA SYKES: SICK & TIRED debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. It was taped before a live audience at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, WANDA SYKES: SICK & TIRED and featured material from her recent national tour. Among the topics covered were: politics, gay marriage, karma, healthcare, racial profiling, the pressure of being a woman and the perks of getting older.

Sykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and was heard in the animated feature “Over The Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures. She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show “Wanda Does It” where she tried various non-showbiz jobs. Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published by Simon and Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004. Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.

In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox’s “Wanda at Large” which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied”. In addition, she can be seen on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” or heard on Comedy Central’s “Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy.

Wanda was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Maryland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.

She spent 5 years as part of the HBO’s critically acclaimed “Chris Rock Show.” As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmy’s and in 1999 won the Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.” In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic.” She won three more Emmy’s, in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , for her work on “Inside the NFL” for “Outstanding Studio Show – Weekly- Inside The NFL”.

In 2003, Wanda earned a Comedy Central Commie Award for “Funniest TV Actress.” Other writing credits include: the “MTV 1999 Music Video Awards,” “The MTV Movie Awards” the “74th Annual Academy Awards,” “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show,” and “Wanda at Large.”

She also appeared in the feature films: “Pootie Tang”, “Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps”, and “Down to Earth.”

Emmy Award-winning actress, comedian and author Wanda Sykes returns to FOX to host the innovative and irreverent new Saturday late-night series, THE WANDA SYKES SHOW.

The weekly late-night series, will feature Sykes’ personal take on the events of the week punctuated by field pieces and produced comedy segments. Everything from news, politics, sports and pop culture will get examined with a fresh point of view.

Each Saturday night, Sykes will lead a discussion with regular panelists, famous friends and whole lot of folks you wouldn’t expect to find on television. In a wry and lively conversation about the overwrought, overlooked and the latest complete non-controversies, THE WANDA SYKES SHOW is a talk show for the rest of us.

Recent Studies Show Dad May Need Help But Won’t Ask For It; experts call on families to monitor dad’s physical and mental health

Towson, Md. – June 2009 - The new tie and golf balls are a nice gesture, but this Father’s Day dad might need a gift society has conditioned him not to ask for- HELP! This could mean a helper to do simple tasks dad can no longer manage or a companion to help dad socialize and relieve depression and loneliness. Recent studies show men don’t seek psychological and physical help as easily as women because our culture preaches to boys early on that asking for help is not masculine but rather a sign of weakness.

“We see many elderly men needing the most help but they are the last to ask for it,” says Peter Ross, CEO and founder of Senior Helpers, the nation’s fastest growing provider of in-home senior care. “An elderly man could be suffering from deep depression or a physical ailment, but he’s too proud to seek assistance.”

Just ask Mark Snider from Charlotte, North Carolina. His 83-year-old dad, Rod Snider, had symptoms of dementia for several months before he finally told his family he had a problem. Rod was having difficulty sleeping and was becoming forgetful. His family blamed old age.

Mark says his dad suddenly turned over his car keys and said, “Son I no longer feel I should drive.” Mark hired Senior Helpers for his dad, 24/7, to help him back to bed during the night so he would not accidentally fall, take his medicine on time, go for walks and even work with Scrabble pieces and math flash cards to keep his mind sharp. Rod died last month from an aggressive form of dementia, just months after he was officially diagnosed.

Consider this:

A 2008 study from the University of Cincinnati and the Medical University of South Carolina finds in the U.S. boys learn early on that men should be strong, independent, tough and self- reliant. The study calls the contrast between men’s and women’s help- seeking behavior a “growing concern.” In the U.S., men die, on average, close to seven years younger than women and have higher rates of the 15 leading causes of death. A study by Clark University and Boston College says, “improving professional help seeking is one obvious way to better men’s lives.” A new national poll conducted by Senior Helpers found 70% (7 out of 10) adult children would overwhelmingly choose their mom over their dad to move in with them if their elderly parents could not take care of themselves. Ross believes, ” children think of mom first because she’s more likely to ask for help while dad appears independent and in control.”

Solution:

“The best way to get dad help is to offer it with an emphasis on problem solving rather than emotion,” adds Ross. “Since men are competitive and success oriented, the best way to approach Dad is to acknowledge the courage it takes to ask for and accept assistance and then point out why it is a good idea.”

Ross also advises basing your offer to help dad on these warning signs:

Difficulty getting around. Falls are the leading cause of death and injury for Americans over age 65. Memory loss. It’s one thing to forget where the keys are. It’s another to forget if you took your medicine, left the stove on, if you forget the day or your location. Severe memory loss could be a sign of severe dementia. Change in appearance or behavior. Weight loss could indicate a senior is not eating properly. A lack of hygiene or unkempt appearance may be a sign of depression or the inability to perform the basic activities of daily living.

You cannot win if you don’t finish the race! You cannot accomplish anything in life without persistence. You can accomplish through Life Training!

Just ask Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker, who once said, “My God-given talent is my ability to stick with something longer than anyone else.”

I once read that George Lucas, super-successful producer of Star Wars, didn’t just move effortlessly through the ranks to become a great producer. Rather, he had to develop his skills, recover from setbacks and rejection, and show a painstaking dedication to perfect his films. He studied film at the University of Southern California, and began working on a film by Francis Ford Coppola, a documentary on the side, while squeezing in work on his first feature script between 5:00 and 9:00 AM.

When he completed the script, he thought it was terrible. He showed it to Coppola, who agreed. “It is,” he said, ‘‘you’re absolutely right.” His first thought was to hire a writer, but Coppola disagreed. “No,” said Coppola, “if you’re going to make it in this business you have to learn how to write.” So he did.

Later, he wrote a sci-fi film, called THX 1138, and presented it to Warner Brothers. They rejected the film, abandoned Lucas and the studio, leaving him deeply in debt. Lucas had worked on the film for three years at his own expense.

So, he began to work on a rock’n’roll film set in the late 50’s, early 60’s. After being rejected by every other company in town, Ned Tannen of Universal Pictures prevailed over much opposition to have it accepted. Though other angry executives wanted it dropped, they went ahead to produce the film, American Graffitti, which became a smash hit.

Then Lucas decided to try another sci-fi movie. He researched kid’s movies; ancient myths that have endured, the elements in fairy tales that have made them pass the test of time and be loved by generation after generation of kids. And his drive for perfection carried over to the filming. To make the space battles look realistic, he did drawings based on a meticulous study of real war footage.

He was looking for those elements that make an audience believe what they are seeing. He watched every movie that had ever been made which showed air-to-air combat. He wanted to know why each shot worked, for instance, that slight roll of the wings that made it look real. It is no wonder, then, that Star Wars grossed .5 million in its first 9 days, becoming the most successful box office hit up until that time.

Never ever Quit! Take it out of your vocabulary! Quit is a “four letter word”!

Car Navigation Could Show Available Parking Spots One Day!

Nowadays, it’s very hard to find a parking lot in the city center. Looking for open parking spaces in the city is one of the more teeth-grinding rituals for drivers, but researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey may have hit upon a relatively low-cost solution. They combined ultrasonic sensors with car GPS to create digital maps of available parking spaces for Web-based navigation systems, according to Technology Review.

As much as 45 percent of traffic in Manhattan comes from cars wearily circling the blocks and looking for parking spaces, according to a New York City transportation advocacy group called Transportation Alternatives. That problem has driven cities such as San Francisco to create “smart parking infrastructure” that detects vehicles in parking spots using fixed sensors — a solution that costs 0 for installing and maintaining each sensor.

The Rutgers researchers took a more mobile, low-cost approach by builing a sensor platform based on a ultrasonic sensor that gauges the distance to nearby obstacles, and a 0 car GPS receiver to mark locations. They combined the setup with a PC to transmit the data to a central server via Wi-Fi, and placed the prototype platform on just three cars that commuted through Highland Park, NJ.

Based on data collected from daily commutes of the three cars alone, the team created an ultrasound algorithm to calculate available parking spaces that was 95 percent accurate, and also made digital maps based on the GPS data that were more than 90 percent on target. Such digital maps could then become available to car navigation systems  via Wi-Fi connections or the more widely available cellular modems, and perhaps become part of the traditional GPS setup in cars.

A next possible step could involve outfitting taxicabs or other cars that regularly drive around. The engineers say that they could cover the entire downtown San Francisco area using just 300 taxis for 0,000, compared to the million price tag for just one of San Francisco’s fixed-sensor parking lots. We’ll take that, please, along with our parallel-parking cars.

Gm Pulls Ads From Imus Show

General Motors Corp. joined other sponsors that are pulling ads from the “Imus in the Morning” program following last week’s controversial comments of the jock about African Americans as well as female college athletes.

GM said it will stop advertising during the Imus show. The show originated on the CBS-owned WFAN in New York and is syndicated nationwide. The program also is simulcast daily on the MSNBC cable television channel. GM in 2006 was the top advertising spender at MSNBC overall and during the Imus program, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

The automaker issued a statement that stated: “General Motors obviously does not condone the comments Don Imus recently made in reference to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. Mr. Imus has publicly apologized, and admitted his comments were ‘completely inappropriate and offensive.’ He has also stated his intention to make changes to his show. We acknowledge and welcome these actions. We have decided, however, to suspend our advertising while we continue to monitor the situation.”

In 2006, the largest automaker spent an estimated 2,000 purchasing commercial time during the MSNBC simulcast of the Imus program. The ads were not as simple and affordable as those of Volvo car parts for it does mean that they include a heftier sum. Overall, the automaker spent .95 million at MSNBC. The data was divulged by TNS. Other top sponsors of Imus include Sprint Nextel Corp., PetMed Express Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Spokesmen for the Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler Group said that those car companies do not advertise during the Imus show, but said that it is possible some of their dealers may independently buy spots in their local markets.

On April 4, Imus, along with producer and sidekick Bernard McGuirk, bantered about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team which had lost an NCAA Championship game the night before. He referred to the athletes with the slur “nappy-headed hos.”

The next day Imus issued a brief apology but retort to the derogatory dialogue on his show continued throughout the weekend. On Monday a visibly shaken Imus offered a longer on-air mea culpa, describing himself as a “good person” who “said a bad thing.” But the mea culpa failed to appease many critics. These critics pointed to comparable misogynistic and racist remarks Imus and his staff have made in the past.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, the NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, and others have called for the ouster of Imus, who nonetheless appeared on Sharpton’s Monday broadcast. Imus, up until now, continues to convey his remarks and apologies to the players and their families. The Rutgers basketball players and their coach held a press conference Tuesday and agreed to meet with the radio host.

“This young team fought through immeasurable odds to reach the highest pinnacle and play for the school’s first national championship in a major sport,” said C. Vivian Stringer, the coach of the team. “To serve as a joke of Mr. Imus in such an insensitive manner creates a wedge and makes light of the efforts of these classy individuals, both as women and as women of color.”

CBS and MSNBC have said they will punish Imus by suspending the program for two weeks starting April 16. Procter & Gamble, office-supply chain Staples Inc. and other sponsors already have pulled their commercials from the program. The decision was made notwithstanding Imus’ repeated apologies and promises of reform.

GM intimated it will carry on its support to Imus’ charitable efforts that cover work with sick and disabled children. Ryndee S. Carney, the GM spokeswoman, said the automaker has donated vehicles for use at The Imus Ranch, a nearly 4,000-acre cattle station in New Mexico. The ranch is used to offer kids with cancer and other diseases a ‘cowboy experience.’
