Ismael Ahmed: Michigan Department of Human Services Director and Social Advocate

Ismael Ahmed is a nationally renowned cultural leader in the Detroit area. An expert in social reform and immigration practices, Ahmed has been the director of the Michigan Department of Human Services since September 10, 2007. The Michigan DHS is the second largest state run program in Michigan. Appointed by Jeniffer Granholm, Ahmed oversees nearly 10,000 employees and manages an annual budget of billion-plus. Not only has Ahmed served 1.5 million medical cases and 1.2 million cash and food assistant program, but he is a co-founder of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS).

ACCESS, located in Dearborn, MI, was first created to help Arab American immigrants adapt to American life. Now, with over 90 programs and affiliates in over 90 states, ACCESS is the largest Arab American Human Services organization in the United States. Ahmed was appointed executive director in 1983. Their mission is to “provide economic and social services to Arab immigrants, Arab Americans, and non-Arabs alike.”

Recently, on Saturday, June 6, ACCESS participated in Detroit’s 18th annual Komen Race for the Cure. This 5K run/walk is designed to raise money and awareness to help the fight against breast cancer. ACCESS volunteers proudly participated on Saturday, eager to get the word out on breast cancer and to help in any way possible to fight for a cure.

Ahmed has a long history of patriotism. The Brooklyn native went to Vietnam with the United States army. He worked hard as a young adult, and put himself through college at the University of Dearborn. He was later awarded an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2009. He was also an active member of the United Auto Workers Union.

Ahmed is concerned with child welfare systems, and offered several reforms. He put programs in effect creating significant improvements in foster care, adoption processes and help for runaway youth. He also worked closely with the Michigan Schools of Social Work conducting research while training and evaluating social workers.

Michigan’s foster care system, run by DHS, has named May of 2009 to be Child Appreciation month. With 4,000 children waiting and ready to be adopted, it is important to recognize those children and the loving social workers and families who cared for them. Amanda Simms, recruitment and training specialist at Orchards Children’s Services, said, “Foster Care Month is a time to recognize the generous families who step up to become foster parents, and also a time to raise awareness of the need for more dedicated families who will foster, mentor or adopt a vulnerable child in need of a family. Our community is committed to meeting the needs of these children and their families.”

Ahmed is a United Way board member, and also serves on the Michigan State Housing Development Authority Board and as a member of the Early Childhood Investment Corporation’s executive committee. Ahmed has served on numerous governing boards like Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters

Ahmed’s immense dedication and years of hard work have not gone unrecognized. On May 10, 2008, Ahmed won the Arab American of the Year award. United Way named Ahmed Director of the Year in 1992. Under his careful leadership, ACCESS received the Exemplary Community Service Program Award from the State of Michigan. President George W. Bush also awarded ACCESS with the Points of Light Award in 1992 for their exemplary non-profit service.

During a recent commencement address at Hampton University in Virginia, Barack Obama described the way today’s internet-powered media environment “bombards us with all kinds of content.”

He warned students that iPads, Xboxes, and other popular digital gadgets can turn information into “a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment” rather than a means “of empowerment.”

As soon as the president’s remarks were made public, keyboards began slamming throughout the blogosphere.

Since I started Teleteria in 1994 I have seen the changes personally. I am locked up in an office from 530am to 9-10pm 5 days a week answering phone calls, emails, and Im’s from staff. Over the past decade, most of us have been dramatically ratcheting up the time we spend surfing the web, exchanging electronic messages, and hanging out in social networks like Facebook and MySpace. At the same time, we’ve been showering our kids with laptops, iPods, PlayStations and smartphones.

Most days I start the day off at the gym then to my desk. You would think I would be so tired I would have no problem sleeping but half the nights I cant sleep because my brain is still flying at warp factor ten.

When I log on in the morning I read WSJ, CNN, MsNBC, Washington Post, NY and LA Times, Drudge, NY Daily News NY Post, Politico, BBC, Pravda, Tehran Times and Pakistan Times and Al Jazerra, and Korean News while listening to Imus in the morning. This is of course after I spend 2 hours reviewing the last 24 hours of Google traffic. Google comes before my kids. I am sorry but its the truth. No Google no GI Joe. No Google no college.

For those nights when I cant sleep there is always a nice bowl of ice cream and a movie. Last week I was lucky enough to catch The Friends of Eddie Coyle on cable. A great 70′s movie by Peter Yates of Bullitt fame. Filmed in Boston in the teriffic gritty 70′s style that is sadly all gone from movie making today. I digress.

Kids go home after school so they can log on. Instead of playing ball they go play video games. True they are online with each other but they are also seperate in their rooms alone for hours on end while playing. You can make the argument that they are still interacting with their friends but they are still isolated alone in their room. This cant be a positive thing in the long term.

I am not saying I have the answers. All I, Jay Servidio ,is saying is that times are changing. I sometimes find myself uncomfortable in social settings lately. As I get more and more into online marketing unlocking the tools to higher traffic I spend more time online implementing the tools. As I spend more time online I spend less time socializing. Its been 6 months since I had a night out with friends. This article is not suppose to be me whining. I am merely trying to paint an honest picture from personal experience on the nets effect on me.

So what can we take away from this brief but honest peice? That Peter Yates is a great director? Yes. For me the writing of this article has shown me that I have a battle going on inside me at all times. The battle to get more work done and increase my income and the knowledge that my work takes me away from life. I have to find that proper balance.

I guess after I have a pile of money in the bank or flying past Larry Elison in my sailboat I can take a break.

Social media’s role in Education

There is much debate in current theory over how appropriate it is for social media to be implemented in the recruitment processes of universities. Many argue that it’s a dangerous step given the additional management and time required to control the messages and opinions that are expressed. However, it cannot be denied that the social media sphere is where the majority of a university’s target audience hang out and so it would be idiotic to ignore the obvious potential…

It cannot be denied that the vast majority of prospective students are social media connoisseurs so it makes sense for university marketing teams to venture down this trail in their recruiting activities. The days of paper leaflets and bulky prospectuses are fading fast and in order to stay relevant to students, it’s imperative that universities drop the obsession with tradition and pride and remember as Renault keep telling us… we live in modern times. Many universities have already adopted these strategies encouraging students to engage in friendly banter on their Facebook pages, or use it as a source for prospective students to engage with the experiences of current students. The big worry many universities have is, how do you stop people publicly slating you? Well the answer… you can’t really so get over it. If someone wants to write something derogatory, they will and at least if it’s on your page you are able to monitor such comments for any validity and perhaps get to grips with some of the truths that you choose to ignore but which are preventing recruitment! The fact is social media sites are basically self-regulating and all you have to do is facilitate. That is, for every negative comment made there will someone waiting to refute it often a happy student! It’s important not to shy away from the bad because the fact is; no university is or has ever been, above ridicule. Rather than becoming obsessed over whether or not to take the plunge into social media universities should perhaps be more concerned over the growing issue of online security, both on a practical level and in an educational context. Given that all university students are legally adults there seems to be less of a concern about protecting their online experiences. However, it’s still important that students are deterred from visiting inappropriate sites on campus, for their own safety, for the comfort of others and indeed to allow for optimum productivity on the student’s part. Additionally universities, as institutes of learning should be a primary setting for educating people on the actual threats and dangers inherent with unprotected online activity to make them more astute. Most universities offer IT course in some format but very few devote any time to increasing knowledge on the area of cyber security, either through research or practical workshops. One exception which caught my eye online today was the actions of 2 Newark Law schools.

Law school students, prosecutors and homeland security agents, as part of a project sponsored by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, will have the chance to learn more about cyber security law and the emerging concern with online terrorism. This was one of the top story’s released by the Northjersey.com news this morning, reinforcing the growing realisation of the link between education and online security. The Cybersecurity Law Project, which will be held at two Newark law schools, is one of the first of its kind nationwide, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli. Overall this points more than anything to the acknowledgment for the need of for education in regard to online security, and were better to further the gaps in knowledge than at universities, noted as the pillars of academia in society!

Pupils taking an ICT GCSE falls 17 per cent

However it’s perhaps wrong to pile all the pressure on the universities given it can be often the student’s relationship with IT formed through their secondary school education that forms their online behaviours and knowledge of the subject. A latest report suggests that almost a fifth less students took the ICT GCSE this year, which is a significant fall from last year. It is perhaps more surprising given the fact that this age-group spend a considerable time online; actively engaging in social media, online shopping, gaming and general browsing. In many ways for the majority of these teens, such an absorption in online activity coupled with a deficiency in knowledge can leave these students the most vulnerable. Introducing the need for an education solution.

As Osborn from Symantec points out, the fall in ICT participation by 17per cent, is strange given the national shortage of skilled IT professionals. The reason given by The Royal Society is because that ICT GCSE lessons are too boring! Osborn suggests that adding information security to the IT curriculum would make it more interesting for pupils and help them to engage more. Additionally, it would also help young people to protect themselves online, which is crucial given the continuous fears that social media sites such as Facebook have brought to the fore. However, increased student awareness into the importance of online security should be complimented with a similar teacher and administrator awareness. That is, the onus on schools throughout the country to implement a managed service such as Maildistiller’s Webaware to safeguard students online. They can choose whether to totally block access to particular websites, simply limit access to lunchtime or better still limit the number of posts made on a certain site! So Education and the web….. the perfect match?

Overall, the point remains that educational institutions rely heavily on the internet; for secure email correspondence between staff and students or peer to peer, their website to provide updates and information, student browsing through the wealth of information and tools available online to help with studies, access to online research journals and much more. Therefore it is not unreasonable to assume that online security should be at the fore. Is there?

People do not meet the way they used to. Sure, we all still attend meetings at church and at city hall and at our children’s teacher conferences, but more and more people are congregating online. All this is going on 24 hours a day, every day of every year. Is your business connecting with people where they are now?

2. Yours is a small company.

You own a small business, perhaps a local party store or an independent insurance agency. Social media is intriguing, but you cannot see the benefit to a business of your size. Let’s say you own a small party store. You check out the largest chain pharmacy’s Facebook Fan Page. They have 433,000+ fans. Do you have 433,000 customers?

Or say you are an insurance agent. After spending some time on a national insurer’s Facebook fan page, you find you’re joining 16,600+ others. Do you have 16,600 clients?

Small businesses need revenue streams more than ever. One cost effective way to generate business is through social media marketing. People who become your fans and see regularly what you post on your fan page are more likely to do business with you than a larger company with whom they might not share a connection.

Social media does not have to be a daily task, but it certainly should be something used weekly. A small business might post community news, events in the lives of staff members and their families, cross-promotions with other local businesses, and content related to its products or services.

3. Yours is a large company.

You are a president of business development for a large, globally-known company. The board of directors has asked you to find new ways of connecting with prospective customers. Let’s go back to the example of chain pharmacies. The number of fans is staggering – 433,000 – when you consider how few fans Competitor #1 has (5,967) and that Competitor #2′s page (88 fans) is apparently created by someone outside the company. If you are in business development for the competitors, do you think there is an urgency to use social media effectively?

Social media is essential to large companies in the 21st century. Modern consumers are discerning and intelligent. They want companies to be responsive and transparent. Social media allows your company to hear from and speak with customers, address their concerns, and generate positive feelings about your brand.

4. Your client base is mostly local.

Your company is successful on the local level; it sustains your business and you’ve reported moderate growth for several years. But lately you have wanted to drive business on a larger level.

Social media is a place to go “remote” while never leaving home. The beauty of platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter is that you can reach a global audience from wherever you are. These sites will allow your business to be seen and known by thousands and thousands of people who might otherwise never know it existed.

Your business can promote its products and/or services to these new potential customers. You can inform them of your past successes and current specials. You can tailor orders easily without having to spend time on the phone or meet in person. Social media will introduce you to new people and render services to them more efficiently.

As well, local support will grow for your business so long as you focus some content on items of local interest. Producing social media content about civic news, high school events, community fundraisers, and the like will keep your base loyal and growing.

5. Your client base is mostly remote.

Your company sells mostly to customers who are remotely located from you. You engage people mostly through your website. Business is good, but you haven’t made much progress with local customers. Perhaps you are a new business in a region that has long been faithful to a competitor. Social media is a way to bridge this gap. Your company may simply suffer from a lack of exposure. A strong presence on social media sites is evidence to prospective customers that you are interested in their ideas and that you are responsive to their concerns. These platforms of “open conversation” can showcase your business as part of a mutually-supportive community.

6. Your friends (and their friends) are your best advocates.

Who are you more likely to trust when he says you should buy a car from a particular dealer – someone you just met on the street or your friend of 20 years? We hope you chose the latter. If so, you are like 99% of the people in this world who believe the word of their friends because they share a common past and have trusted them in other situations.

A company needs friends or fans or followings (depending on the social media platform). You need not fear that you are breaching a social contract with friends so long as your social media is about your customers, their needs, and conversations driven by them. Strangers don’t want to be “sold” anything and neither do your friends.

Social media is about conversation and community and relationships. Developing strong relationships does not mean you cannot promote your business, but it does mean you have to listen more than you talk.

7. Money goes where people go.

You can’t afford not to participate. The perception of social media is that it is for young people. Sure, Facebook and MySpace began as platforms for college students and high school kids. However, according to iStrategy Labs, Facebook users of the age 35 and older are now 30% of the entire user base. Additionally, in 2009, users who are 55+ grew an astounding 922.7%. In fact, every demographic grew in 2009 except college users.

So everyone and their brothers are using Facebook and other social media platforms. Grandmothers are sharing pictures of grandchildren on Flickr. Auto dealerships are bringing the showroom to the customer’s home with videos of cars on YouTube. And the local coffee shop is “linked in” with a new coffee bean distributor with lower shipping costs. People are taking their lives and their money to these virtual worlds. Are you there to meet them?

Social media, while not ubiquitous to business, is by no means still a mystery. There are thousands of businesses of all sizes who “get it”. Is yours one of them? If so, that is great and we’d love to share insights with you. If not, how will you get up to date? Where do you begin?

Getting your MSW or BSW will put you on the right path for a meaningful career. It is good to do your homework to find out which programs are accredited as well as license-ready. Some of the alternative and online programs require special courses or internships to meet state license requirements.
