Spectator Sports in Tampa Bay

Category : Region II

Spectator Sports in Tampa Bay

Professional sports teams in Tampa Bay area fall in one of four categories: Major League Baseball, National Football League – commonly referred to as the NFL, Arena Football League and the National Hockey League – commonly known as the NHL. At the Collegiate level, sports teams are dominated by the University of Tampa’s Tampa U. Spartans and the University of South Florida’s USF Bulls.

Professional Sports Teams

The Tampa Bay Rays is the sports team that plays professional baseball in Major League Baseball in the Tampa Bay Area. Games are held at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. This division of Major League Baseball is made up of the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs or commonly known as American League. The Rays won the American League Pennant in 2008. This win followed a change in the name of the team from Tampa Bay Devil Rays to Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or Bucs for short, play football professionally in the National Football League or NFL that’s part of the National Football Conference. The Raymond James Stadium hosts the NFL home games. The Bucs won the Super Bowl XXXVII in the tail end of the 2002 football season. In 2006, Matt Bryant scored a 62 yard field goal that clinched the game against the Eagles. This amazing feat is second only to the 63 yard NFL record for a field goal.

The Arena Football League or AFL is the cornerstone of the Tampa Bay Storm team that plays their games in the St Pete Times Forum. Arena football is a type of gridiron football that’s played on a smaller field in an indoor stadium. This form of football contrasts with traditional football that’s played outdoors and is usually slower than arena football. The Storm is a founding member of the AFL and has already won five ArenaBowl championships since their inception in 1987.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is the professional ice hockey team that plays in the National Hockey League (NHL). They belong to the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. Their home games are held at St Pete Times Forum and they’re often known as the Bolts. Founded in 1992, the Tampa Bay Lightning has won 2 Division championships in 2003 – 2004 and the Stanley Cup in 2004.

Collegiate Sports Teams

College football is actively played by the University of South Florida Bulls Football team which plays its games at the Raymond James Stadium. The Bulls Football team competes in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) league, and the team is part of the Big East Conference encompassing sixteen universities in the Eastern part of the US. They commenced play in 1997 and their current games are aired lived on the radio in the Tampa Bay area. You can also catch the games on the ESPN network.

Tampa U. Spartans, the collegiate team from the University of Tampa, began competing at the collegiate level in 1993. They have risen to become a force to contend with in the Sunshine State Conference, at Division II of the NCAA. The Spartans have won numerous titles in the NCAA Division II league including baseball in 2006 and 2007 and women’s soccer in 2007. Tampa Stadium plays host to the team’s games.

Both professional and collegiate sports teams abound in the area. From basketball to baseball, you’re sure to find the team that plays your favorite game from the long list of professional clubs and the two main University clubs. Book your tickets to a game at the local stadiums next time you’re in the Tampa area and get in on the action in the field!

A Comprehensive 2007 Guide to Orlando Spectator Sports

Category : Region IV

A Comprehensive 2007 Guide to Orlando Spectator Sports

Central Florida sports fans – visitors and residents alike – will have plenty to cheer about during 2007 with such popular spectator sports as the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (AFL) and the University of Central Florida (UCF) Golden Knights football team. Orlando is also bustling with baseball action during Spring Training as the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros come to town this spring, as well as Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp starting in late July.

The Orlando Magic play all their home games at the 17,500-seat Amway Arena (formerly known as the TD Waterhouse Centre) in downtown Orlando. Founded in 1989, the Orlando Magic advanced to the NBA Finals during the 1994-95 season. Many basketball superstars have played for the Orlando Magic over the years such as Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway and Tracy McGrady. The current Orlando Magic roster includes Dwight Howard, Grant Hill, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick. Brian Hill is the head coach of the Orlando Magic, which compete in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The Magic’s 2006-07 regular season schedule concludes on April 18, 2007, against the Miami Heat. Construction on a new, 20,000-seat Orlando Magic Arena in downtown Orlando is scheduled to begin in early 2008.

Founded in 1991, the Orlando Predators, who captured the Arena Bowl Championship in 2000, compete in the 19-team AFL. The Predators have made the playoffs 15 years in a row and compete in the Southern Division of the National Conference against the likes of the Austin Wranglers, Dallas Desperados, Georgia Force, Las Vegas Gladiators, New Orleans Voodoo and Tampa Bay Storm. The 16-game regular season includes eight home games at the Amway Arena (a.k.a. “The Jungle”) and runs from early February to late May. Jay Gruden is the head coach of the Orlando Predators, which finished the 2006 AFL season with a 10-6 record and lost to Chicago in ArenaBowl XX. The Predators open the 2007 season on March 2, 2007, against the Tampa Bay Storm.

The UCF Golden Knights football team competes in Conference USA against such teams as East Carolina University, Marshall University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Tulane University, University of Alabama Birmingham, University of Houston, University of Memphis, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas-El Paso and University of Tulsa. George O’Leary is the head coach of the Golden Knights, which finished with a record of 4-8 during the 2006 season. The Golden Knights formerly played their home games at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando but a new stadium is currently under construction at the UCF campus. The 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium is set to be completed in time for the Golden Knights’ home opener against the Texas Longhorns on September 15, 2007.

Central Florida is also the site of Major League Baseball (MLB) Spring Training when the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros arrive in February 2007. The Braves play 16 home games at a 7,500-seat, state-of-the-art ballpark within Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, while the Houston Astros compete at the recently renovated Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee. The Braves’ Spring Training season runs from February 28 to March 29, 2007, while the Astros will be here from March 1 to March 31, 2007. In addition, the 2002 World Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers spend Training Camp at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex starting in late July. Practices are open to the public and admission is free for Buccaneers Training Camp.

Other spectator sports scheduled to take place in the Orlando area over the next year include the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl, which pits the second-ranked college football teams of the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium on New Year’s Day; the Silver Spurs Rodeo, the largest rodeo East of the Mississippi, which takes place at the Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee from February 16-18, 2007; and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club (March 12-18, 2007) and Walt Disney World Resort Classic (November 1-4, 2007), two immensely popular golf tournaments that draw some of the world’s top professional golfers on the PGA tour.

Orlando visitors should plan ahead and pre-order tickets for spectator sports they wish to attend during their stay, according to Kyle Collins, Director of Interactive Marketing for HotelsCorp.com.

“Tickets to sporting events, as well as theme park tickets, can often be added to discount vacation packages, allowing families to enjoy significant savings on their Orlando vacations,” said Collins.

College Sports Reign Supreme in Detroit

Detroit is a sports town. It’s a city with passionate fans and remarkable teams. When it comes to collegiate sports, Southeastern Michigan delivers a range of excitement, from Michigan State to the University of Michigan to Wayne State. With so many universities featuring some of the top collegiate sports teams, there’s no time to like now to take advantage of some college spirit.

Michigan’s oldest university, the University of Michigan was founded about 20 years before the territory of Michigan became a state. Originally located in Detroit, U of M was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The U of M Wolverines sports teams participate in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except men’s hockey. The university’s football program ranks first in NCAA history in both wins and winning percentage. Playing at Michigan Stadium, the Blue and Yellow draw crowds that exceed 100,000. Its fiercest rivalries include Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Football has a long tradition at MSU and this Division 1 team won the Rose Bowl in 1954, 1956, and 1988 and boasts six national championships. Competing in Spartan Stadium, MSU’s traditional archrival is the University of Michigan, against whom they compete for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. MSU is also one of the three Big Ten teams to have an annual non-conference football game against Notre Dame. Its men’s basketball and ice hockey teams have also won national titles.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, is well known as being one of the largest producers of professional educators in the country. The university is also well known for its hosting of the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Western State University’s green and gold Warriors participate in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for all sports except ice hockey.

The University of Detroit, founded in 1877, and Mercy College of Detroit, founded in 1941, consolidated in 1990 to form the University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan’s largest and most comprehensive Catholic university. Sponsored by the Society of Jesus and the Religious Sisters of Mercy, the school offers nearly 100 academic degrees and programs of study through seven colleges and schools. Located on three campuses in Detroit, the UDM has consistently ranked among the top tier of Midwestern master’s universities in U.S. News and World Report’s “American Best Colleges.”

The Detroit Titans are the NCAA Division 1 team of the university. Competing in the Horizon League, UDM is consistently a contender for the Horizon League title in men’s basketball. ESPN’s well-known college basketball commentator, Dick Vitale, was the Detroit men’s basketball head coach for four seasons before serving as the school’s Athletic Director. The University of Michigan Offers Big-10 Sports, Culture, and Entertainment

An integral part of the city of Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan shapes the composition of the city’s economy, population and cultural awareness. One of every three adults in the city are employed by the university; it’s worldwide reputation draws esteemed professors from all parts of the world; and the university hosts a wide range of cultural events promoting local and visiting artists, musicians, writers, and celebrities.

Hill Auditorium houses many cultural events throughout the year. The University Musical Society is considered to be one of the five top presenters of performing arts in the country. Annually, the society presents more than 50 performances featuring artists such as Yo Yo Ma, Jessye Norman, New York City Opera, Emerson String Quartet, and Sweet Honey in the Rock, to name a few. The School of Music, Theatre and Drama also offers many free concerts by orchestras, choirs, bands and chamber ensembles. Fully staged productions of opera, drama, musical theater, and dance are presented each fall and winter term.

Home to one of college football’s most recognized sporting facilities, Michigan Stadium, or The Big House, has come to symbolize the pride, tradition and excellence of the home of the Wolverines. When it comes to Big 10 rivalries, loyalties to U of M are fierce and passionate. There truly is no place like The Big House on a fall Saturday afternoon.

Since its inaugural season in 1927, the stadium has welcomed more than 35 million fans through its gates and more than 170 consecutive crowds of 100,000 plus. Many changes and renovations continuously improve the quality of the facility, while increasing its capacity to its present 107,501. In fact, its most recent project began at the end of the 2007 football season with plans for completion in August 2010. Improvements include elevated concourses with additional restrooms and concessions along both sidelines, a new press box, elevator and stairway access to bring patrons to the new concourses and premium seating areas, and much, much more. When completed, the project will increase seating to more than 108,000.

An oasis of nature, the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nicolas Arboretum are caretakers of the university’s natural heritage. The garden’s displays, natural areas, conservatory, trails and significant buildings invite visitors’ exploration – and provide students with some of the University’s best study spots.

One of the first outdoor gardens developed on the site, the Perennial Garden showcases color-coordinated waves of bloom from regional plants. A favorite site for weddings, the perennial gardens demonstrate an exuberant display, spring through fall. The Conservatory at Matthaei Botanical Gardens features the sights and smells of plants from all over the world. An exceptionally rare structure, the Conservatory is believed to be the largest free-span conservatory of its structural style. It represents a technological limit of architectural materials and climatic controls in a pre-computer era.

The Nichols Arboretum has an extensive but dispersed collection of native and exotic trees and shrubs masterfully crafted into a naturalistic landscape begun in 1907. The Arb presents one of the richest landscapes in the region, as well as a complex glacial topography that presents vast panoramas, broad valleys, and intimate dales and glens.

The museums and galleries of the University of Michigan inform and entertain visitors on a variety of topics. The Detroit Observatory appears essentially as it was in 1854 and the original astronomical instruments remain intact and operational. The dome is turned manually by pulling a continuous rope. Completely restored in 1998, the observatory is a cultural treasure waiting to be explored and is open for tours on select dates.

The Exhibit Museum of Natural History showcases the natural sciences and anthropology. Permanent exhibits include the most extensive prehistoric life collection in the State of Michigan, rare specimens in the Michigan Wildlife Gallery, and more than 700 rock and mineral specimens in the Geology section. Planetarium shows are offered on weekly on seasonal star talks and astronomy-related topics.

In June 2006, restoration on the University of Michigan Museum of Art’s historic Alumni Memorial Hall began. The .9 million project will more than double the museum’s space and enable it to accommodate temporary exhibitions, concerts, classes, and more. Through 2008 the museum will operate a temporary exhibition space immediately adjacent to the university’s central campus. The museum’s collections cover the continents of Africa, America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and more.

The University of Michigan also offers collections in anthropology, paleontology, zoology, and even a 2,500-piece showcase of historical and contemporary musical instruments from all over the world.

The Biggest Rivalries in Sports

The Biggest Rivalries in Sports

From college football to Major League Baseball, rivalries between teams have always added excitement to fan experience. Many teams are old rivals, while others have developed a competitive intensity more recently. What teams have been fighting it out for some time? Rivalries are at the center of many fan’s lives. Here’s a quick look at some classic ones.

College football has some of the most talked about rivalries in all of sports. To begin with, you have the heated battles between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners. Being in neighboring states, they compete for regional bragging rights and often the same recruits. Over the years, there have been many classic match-ups between the two teams.

One of the biggest rivalries in college football history is between Big 10 powerhouses Ohio State and Michigan. These teams, that are usually nationally ranked, are so well matched and competitive that the winner is often determined in the final minutes and sometimes the final seconds of the contest. Consequently, when these two teams play, the game often determines which remains in the National Championship picture and which is out.

The South features the tough competition between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers. From the days of Alabama’s legendary coach Bear Bryant this has been one of the most talked about match-ups on the gridiron. Both schools are in the same state and are highly competitive with each other year in and year out. There have been many close, tight-knit games over the past century to prove it. The Tennessee Volunteers also have an active rivalry with these two teams but nothing compares to the legendary hard fought battles between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide.

On the west coast, there is the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) rivalry. This competition has been dominated recently by the success of Southern California and the strong teams they have produced over the last couple of years. Recently USC has taken to the field with Heisman Trophy winners Matt Leinhart and Reggie Bush, giving the Trojans the edge. This next year we may see a shift in power with UCLA coming to the forefront.

The National Basketball Association has had the classic battles of the Lakers and the Celtics. For decades these two teams fought back and forth to determine who would take home the NBA crown. There were the great match-ups in the 60′s and 70′s of Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, which are legendary in the history of the NBA.

The 80′s hosted memorable post-season contests between the Lakers’ Magic Johnson and the Celtics’ Larry Bird. Their respective teams, with Bird running the court and dishing off to Robert Parrish for a slam dunk or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar working the ball inside only to pass back to Johnson for three, produced some of the greatest moments in NBA history and will be talked about for decades to come.

The meetings between the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks produced another fine rivalry. Michael Jordon with his extreme athletic ability was the catalyst for tough contests in which the Knicks sometimes surprised the team from the Windy City; although the majority of the time Jordan and company were on the plus side in these contests.

Every season a tandem of college basketball teams always stand out as among two of the best in the nation. In North Carolina both on and off the court, one college basketball rivalry dominates the region. The University of North Carolina and Duke, both members of the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), are located only 8 miles apart. Both schools possess myriads of faithful fans that have traveled Tobacco Road year after year to see their teams fight for victory.

Since 1990, the two clubs have a combined for a total of eleven Final Four appearances. Those who follow the ACC certainly recognize the high profile contests that have defined their rivalry. The Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels are synonymous with big name games, some of which they have won and others they’ve lost.

Off the court, these two teams also battle it out by attempting to recruit some of the most talented players in the nation. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils often court the same players, with coaching staffs jousting with each other for the finest players available. NCAA National Championships are the hallmark of both these schools. If you enjoy excitement and hardcore college basketball at its best, Duke and UNC are your ticket.

In Major League Baseball, there is perhaps the greatest rivalry of all sports. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have battled each other on the diamond since the early twentieth century. The rivalry became heated in 1920 when the Red Sox sold the game’s greatest player, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees. From that point on, the Yankees dominated the rest of Major League Baseball, going on to win 26 World Series; while Boston, after Ruth departed, was unable to capture a single crown.

Some people began to call Boston’s championship drought the “curse of the Bambino.” The trade of Babe Ruth, who was also known as the “Bambino,” was supposedly the reason why Boston couldn’t win a championship. But that all changed in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox were able to come back from three games down in the American League Championship Series and defeat the New York Yankees, and then go on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.

This was what Red Sox fans had been waiting for, and now they’re hopeful that they will never have to hear about “the curse” again. This has been one heck of a rivalry over the years and odds are that it will continue to be one of the best in sports.

When there’s an intense rivalry between two teams it’s always magnified by fan enthusiasm. The fans are what make two teams want to compete harder against each other, but it takes exciting, hard-fought games to get the fans interested. Most great rivalries are not built on one or two good contests, but over decades of excellent games.

There is no set number of games that teams must play in order to generate a rivalry. The fans and players together are the ones who decide what makes an ongoing, classic rivalry. But one thing is for certain, there is nothing better than watching two, evenly matched rivals battle it out until only one is left standing.
