First Time In India: Education Loan Approval Before Admission For Students Going To The Usa

American Education and the I20

An US University can conditionally admit the student for a particular course based on various parameters, ranging from Standardized Test Scores (GRE, GMAT, etc) to Leadership Qualities. However, it does not release the official document confirming a students’ admission until and unless the student is able to demonstrate financial ability to pay for the first year of the course and continued funds to support the remaining years of education.

This official document of admission, also called the Form I20, is in fact a legal document tied to US Immigration Services. The I20 is not only the only proof of secured admission but also forms the basis of that student’s US student visa claim and attempt to enter the US for education. In a nutshell, if you don’t have an I20, you don’t go to the US for education.

Obtaining the I20

Demonstrating financial ability can be tricky, especially because only a few forms of documentary evidence are accepted by the US University. Dean of International Admissions at Smith College, a highly selective private undergraduate college near Boston—“We normally accept loan letters [for I20 sponsorship] as we are very expensive and understand that the student and family may not have full funding proof and may take student loans to pay the balance fee…if the family funds plus the loan add up to the required amount, then we can issue the I20.”

However, for a student who wishes to attend an American university but resides in a different country, this process is made exponentially more difficult, particularly when it comes to getting in contact with a representative from the university of your choice.

That is not to say that you should give up if you are one of these students, though. Just because getting in contact with the school is difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Naturally, the best people to ask about how to apply to a certain university are those who actually work for that university. It’s becoming increasingly common for universities to have instant chat features, where a person in any part of the world can talk to a representative for that university, regardless of the time.

However, for universities that do not have this feature implemented on their homepage, contacting someone to ask questions is slightly more difficult. You can email an official, but this does not promise that your questions will get answered soon, or sometimes even at all. Your best option in this case is to call the university. There are two major things to take into consideration here: the charges that will be made to your phone bill for long-distance and out of country calls, but mostly the office hours of that university. Due to time differences, calling at five in the afternoon in your country may be the equal to calling at two in the morning in their country. Check time differences and be sure to make your call at the appropriate hour.

A final, but no less important, consideration is the language barrier. This is particularly important to those getting in contact with the university of their choice via a telephone call. When typing a message, it is easy to take time and check to make sure you’re conveying the correct meaning, but this is not possible to do during a phone call. If you are calling a member of the international office staff, make sure that either you are fluent in the language or they have someone on their end who can translate. A final consideration to make in this case is accents – even in face to face conversations accents can be hard to understand, so make sure that you are patient with the staff member if they do not understand yours, and be patient with yourself when understanding theirs.

How did the United States shift from being the world leader in higher education to falling so far behind in enrollment and completion rates? Budget cuts in our education system has now forced most public schools to raise their tuition fees to compensate for the loss of funds and as a result, our students just can’t afford to go to college anymore.

A new report shows that the baby boomer generation has more college degrees than the present generation of college students. Unfortunately, we are now watching a generation of mental capabilities fade away because they are less educated. This is the first time in our history that we experience an educational decline in the younger generation. It’s getting harder to find a ninth grader that’s enrolled in a four-year university course. The percentage of transitions from high school to college has dropped from 45 percent to 37 percent.

The majority of American families are now living paycheck to paycheck and can no longer afford a college education for their children. Pell grants would cover 70 percent of the total cost of a year at a four year university back in the 1990′s, it has now dropped to half of that as a percentage.

Patrick M. Callan, president of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, says, “we are moving backwards.” We are witnessing a regression because tuition is increasing faster than income, inflation and even health care. College tuition costs about 31 percent of a family’s income, but those in the bottom 20 percent end up contributing 73 percent of their total income to pay tuition fees.

So what are our financial priorities? If the state cannot or will not provide funding for this and future generations, will the enrollment rates continue to decline? If we are not very careful, our college system will revert back to the “elite establishment” we all worked so hard to escape. Our children are our future they deserve better.
