Shelly Jyoti and Laura Kina presents their latest exhibition titled Indigo

Event: Indigo: New works by Shelly Jyoti and Laura Kina, an exhibition of around forty new works in mediums like hand embroidery on khadi, acrylic on fabric, hand stenciled Sanskrit calligraphy and textile embroidery on canvas by Indian artist Shelly Jyoti and USA-based artist Laura Kina. The exhibition is on from December 23, 2009 to December 28, 2009 at Open Palm Court Gallery, India Habitat Centre New Delhi. Time: 11 am-7pm.

While the preview of the exhibition was held at Red Earth Gallery, Vadodara, Gujarat on December 15-16, 2009, it would also be displayed at Nehru Art Centre, Mumbai from January 12, 2010 to January 18, 2010.

Shelly Jyoti and Laura Kina decided to collaborate in 2008-2009, considering their mutual interest in textile history, pattern & decoration. They began by thinking about the intersections of their own ethnic and national positions in relation to fabrics. For this exhibition in particular, Shelly Jyoti’s Indigo Narratives utilize traditional embroidery and embellishments along with heritage symbols belonging to traveling ethnic communities who settled in coastal Gujarat while Laura Kina’s Devon Avenue Sampler series focuses on a contemporary Desi/Jewish community in Chicago, IL.

Shelly Jyoti, a visual artist, independent curator, fashion designer, poet and researcher, lives and works in Vadodara, India. She is trained in fashion design and clothing technology at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi and has completed her Masters degree in English Literature from Punjab University in Chandigarh.

Her writings and paintings have been published internationally. Her works are in collection with Sahitya Akademi, the journal of Indian English literature. She is an advisory board member of Disha, a non-profit organizations dedicated to helping children with autism, and Socleen, a non-profit environmental organization.

Laura Kina is an artist and scholar living in Chicago, IL.  She is an Associate Professor of Art, Media and Design, Vincent de Paul Professor, and Director of Asian American Studies at DePaul University. She earned her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a 2009-2010 DePaul University Humanities Fellow. Her Devon Avenue Sampler series is funded in part by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and a University Research Council Grant from DePaul University.

The exhibition is a must-see as it throws light on the history of indigo, from its torrid colonial past in India to the indigo-dyed Japanese folk kasuri fabrics, from boro patchwork quilts and the working class blue jeans in the United States to the blue threads of a Jewish prayer tallis!

College Football Wrap-Up Week 6 – Florida Stays No. 1, Beats LSU, 4 More Teams Suffer Their 1st Loss

Category : Region IV

College Football Wrap-Up Week 6 – Florida Stays No. 1, Beats LSU, 4 More Teams Suffer Their 1st Loss

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

Florida started the season as the No. 1 pick in the AP Top 25 Poll and will remain No. 1 for the 7th straight week after beating the No. 4 Louisiana State Tigers in Baton Rouge, 13-3, in this season’s biggest match-up featuring two Top 5 teams.

The Gators’ swarming defense silenced the Tiger crowd to win their 15th consecutive game, the longest current win streak among major schools, and LSU had its 32-game winning streak in Saturday night games snapped. LSU, ranked last in the SEC in total offense coming into the game, never got untracked and could muster only 162 yards.

Tim Tebow, the heart of Florida’s offense and former Heisman Trophy winner, returned after suffering a concussion two weeks ago. Tebow’s presence helped assure the Gators that they would remain on top with a top effort. LSU started the game with a perfect 5-0 mark and ended it with a 5-1 record. Florida remains unbeaten at an overall 5-0 and sits on top of the SEC’s East Division.

Three other Top 25 teams lost their first game this week—Auburn, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Unranked Arkansas hosted and upset 17th-ranked Auburn, 44-23, as Michael Smith rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, and the Razorbacks raced to a 34-3 lead before sticking a fork in the Tigers. Now it can be confirmed that Auburn was a really suspect Top 25 choice since its first 5 victories came against teams with a combined 9-14 record.

Arkansas is now 3-2 and full of spit and vinegar; the Razorbacks other two wins have come against 149th-ranked, 1-AA Missouri State and 63rd-ranked Texas A&M. Big deal? I think not. Arkansas is not that good and neither is Auburn.

No. 21 Nebraska hit the road and took the measure of No. 24 Missouri, 27-12, handing the Tigers their first defeat. It was simply not a good week for Tiger teams as LSU, Auburn and Missouri all lost for the first time in College Football’s Week 6. Missouri, which had a 12-0 shutout after 3 quarters, quit too early and celebrated as Nebraska won the 4th quarter 27-0, and the game.

Should Missouri have been in the Top 25? As the Hertz rental ad says, not exactly. The Tigers built their 4-0 record on teams with a combined 6-12 record, and that includes 1-AA Furman, that raging powerhouse from South Carolina.

No. 9 Ohio State hosted Wisconsin and cost the Badgers their first loss, 31-13, before sending them back to Wisconsin. The Badgers were at least unranked, even with a 5-0 record coming into the always screaming, always sold-out 101,000-plus-seat horseshoe stadium in Columbus.

A much more significant victory came from No. 3 Alabama as the Crimson Tide took its record to 6-0 with an away victory over 20th-ranked Mississippi, 22-3. The Tide led 19-zip after 3 quarters. Can we now stop all of the preseason publicity about Mississippi this and Mississippi that? The Rebels’ hot shot quarterback—Jevan Snead—continued his mission to greatness by throwing 4 interceptions.

Ole Miss is now 3-2 and one croak away from sliding into a swamp. Should Mississippi even be in the Top 25? Nah, the Rebels have some real proving to do.

Other ranked teams with away victories this week included:

No. 10 TCU over Air Force 20-17. Without a 4th quarter field goal, TCU would have gone into overtime. No. 13 Oregon continued its momentum by beating UCLA 24-10. No. 15 Oklahoma State outlasted Texas A&M to win again with another lame performance, 36-31. If Oklahoma State keeps giving up 31 points a game, they are not going to keep winning for long.

No. 18 Brigham Young topped UNLV 59-21. No. 22 Georgia Tech just made it by Florida State 49-44 in a shootout. BYU is now 5-1 and Florida State 4-2; one could easily argue that Georgia Tech is better than BYU, and may well prove so before the season is over.

Ranked teams with home victories included:

No. 2 Texas over Colorado 30-28 after Colorado led 14-10 at the half. Colorado is now 1-5 with their only win over Wyoming. Texas has played no one so far this season. After Oklahoma next, the Longhorns play no one really significant through the end of the season. Texas should win a lot of games and there will be no evidence to show that they should play in the National Championship Game this year.

No. 5 Virginia Tech beat up Boston College 48-14. No. 11 Miami (FL) stomped 1-AA Florida State 48-16. Big whoop. No. 12 Iowa had an unimpressive 30-28 win over Michigan. Another big whoop; Iowa should have won by at least 2 touchdowns at home, nonetheless, Iowa’s 5-0 mark is the Hawkeyes best start since 1985. No. 14 Penn State kicked around 152nd-ranked, 1-AA Eastern Illinois; boy, those tough Nittany Lions really know how to charm some cream puffs.

No. 16 Kansas took all afternoon to finally beat Iowa State 41-36. Kansas gave up 36 points to a team that is 3-3. You have to ask yourself, even at 5-0, why should they be ranked so high? The Jayhawks compiled their unbeaten record against teams with a combined 8-12 record, including the 187th-ranked, 1-AA Northern Colorado powerhouse (1-4) from the Rockies. Kansas may be unbeaten, but they are hardly good.

No. 19 Oklahoma beat Baylor 33-7. No. 25 South Carolina just nudged by Kentucky 28-26, a team that Florida beat 41-7; that’s why Florida is No. 1 and South Carolina No. 25. At least the Gamecocks scored a touchdown in each quarter against Kentucky.

Three 5-1 teams that are still looking for recognition and respect won again. Central Michigan whipped Eastern Michigan 56-8; Central Michigan is the worst 1-A team in the nation, currently ranked 164th by Sagarin (there are only 120 teams in 1-A football). Idaho on-the-road (yes, Idaho, don’t laugh) beat San Jose State 29-25.

Pittsburgh, behind 21-13 after 3 quarters at home, won the 4th quarter 11-0 to beat Connecticut, 24-21.

There were at least 3 other notable wins. After 3 straight losses to Central Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin by a combined 13 points, Michigan State evened its record at 3-3 by beating Illinois 24-14 on-the-road.

At 4-1, Stanford looked like the second best team in the Pac 10 behind USC, but Oregon State reminded them of why it is tough to beat the Beavers at home, upsetting The Cardinal 38-28. All bets in the Pac 10 race are now off as Oregon is 3-0, Stanford 3-1 and 3 teams are 2-1—Southern Cal, Oregon State and Washington (yes, the same Washington that was 0-12 last year).

Speaking of Huskies, Washington let Arizona into the red zone at least 8 times and was behind 33-21 at home with 4:22 left. Jake Locker engineered a drive with a 25-yard TD strike to Kavario Middleton with 2:55 left and then a miracle happened.

On the ensuing play after the kickoff, Arizona’s Nick Foles threw another bubble screen pass to Delashaun Dean that was short and behind the receiver. The ball bounced off of his foot and into the air, was promptly intercepted by Husky linebacker Mason Foster and he turned around and rambled 37 yards into the end zone to put Washington ahead, 34-33 with 2:37 remaining.

Jake Locker then completed a 2-point conversion to Jermaine Kearse to make it 36-33. The Husky defense, which had given up 461 yards to Arizona, then suddenly got ugly. Daniel Te’o-Nesheim sacked Nick Foles for a 6-yard loss, and true freshman cornerback Desmond Trufant intercepted Foles’ 4th down attempt to put the Wildcats away.

Washington, twice a dog at home against Southern Cal and Arizona, has shown it is all about playing hard for 60 minutes, finding a way to win, finishing off an opponent and having fun doing it.

Washington’s miracle play brought back great memories of “The Immaculate Reception” during a 1972 playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders. Late in the game a Pittsburgh receiver was hit hard as he tried to make a catch, the ball was deflected and just before it hit the ground, it was caught by Franco Harris, who picked it out of the air and then ran it in for the touchdown that won the game for the Steelers.

Pittsburgh had struggled for 4 decades to win a playoff game, and The Immaculate Reception—called by NFL films as the greatest play of all time—led to the Steelers eventually winning 4 Super Bowls before the end of the decade.

Could something special be happening at the Montlake Campus of the University of Washington Huskies? Count on it, miracles do not happen often, especially on football fields. Washington, you will recall, upset then No. 3-ranked Southern Cal 16-13 earlier in the season.

Six bottom feeders remained winless by losing this week—Ball State, Miami (OH), Eastern Michigan, Rice, New Mexico and Western Kentucky. Florida International got the money off of its back by beating Western Kentucky 37-20—go Golden Panthers (that’s the nickname of FIU, which few would know except those folks who live east of the Mississippi River).

Top 25 teams that were idle this week included No. 6 Boise State, No. 7 Southern Cal, No. 10 Cincinnati and No. 24 South Florida.

That’s it, that’s all, Smokey, put a wrap on it.

Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized practice within the dentistry field. It is concerned more with physical appearance of the oral cavity but can also help alleviate oral pain or diseases. Since the 1980s, cosmetic dentistry has evolved from only dental bonding to tooth whitening and invisible braces. Porcelain veneers help straighten crooked teeth and tooth whitening makes a dull smile dazzle. Dental bonding attaches an enamel-like material to the tooth’s surface to mold into a new tooth on top of a distressed one. Thanks to cosmetic dentistry, a more beautiful, youthful smile is now within reach with cosmetic dentistry.

The website, http://www.healthydentalsolutions.com, offers answers to your most pressing cosmetic dentistry questions. There are pages covering TMJ Syndrome, including symptoms, treatments and what to do with a TMJ emergency. There are also pages covering each type of procedure performed at Healthy Dental Solutions. Restorative dentistry pages crowns and bridges, root canal therapy, composite fillings, and inlays and onlays. Cosmetic dentistry pages include information about procedures such as porcelain veneers, tooth whitening, and tooth bonding. They also offer other services, including deep cleanings, fluoride treatments, and periodontal maintenance. Each page includes in-depth information about the procedure to help you feel comfortable with it. The contact page is there with all the information you need to make an appointment with Dr. Nguyen or Dr. DiStefano.

Dr. Gary DiStefano graduated from Western Michigan University in 1971 and received his DDS from the University Of Michigan’s Dental School in 1975. He holds a special interest in TMD and has had many successes in treating it since 1979. He also lectures medical students on TMJ at the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been doing so since 1984. He keeps up with treatments and technology by attending lectures regularly and completing coursework to ensure the best care possible for his patients. Dr. Phu Nguyen graduated from MSU in 1997 and went on to receive his DDS from the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School in 2001. He has completed a one-year surgical internship with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He practiced two years of family general and cosmetic dentistry in Lansing before joining Dr. DiStefano in his cosmetic dentistry practice. Both doctors are focused on making the dentistry process as comfortable as possible for you.

Michigan Wolverines – The Big Coaches Leading Michigan to Their Big 10 Conference Titles

Michigan Wolverines – The Big Coaches Leading Michigan to Their Big 10 Conference Titles

These are the top five coaches, who helped them win the most Big 10 Conference Titles. From their record, you can really tell that this team is one of the most successful football teams.

The Big 10 is one of the conferences in the National College Athletics Association. It was established in order to regulate and organize athletics in college division. They wanted to ensure that anyone who will play for their school is not just anyone; rather they should be a student of the school they represent with good academic performance. Seven universities started as the early members of this conference and it was not until the 1899 when Indiana and Iowa joined. However when Chicago left, they became the Big Nine. In addition, they adopted the name Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives. Today there are 11 universities joining this conference and the Big 10 Conference became an official name 1987 with a whole new system incorporating values and academic excellence in choosing athletes to play for the member schools.

Athletes in this conference compete for 25 championships (for both men and women). There are 12 sports for men and 13 for women (because of volleyball). University of Michigan has the most wins, garnering 40 NCAA championships titles. They have been playing for this conference since 1896 then left the conference and came back again in 1907. They are famous for their achievements in football, hockey, baseball and basketball. Their college team is known as the Michigan Wolverines.

Their football team garnered 11 championship titles, the most for all of their teams. However, they have 42 Big Ten Conference Titles that have been accumulated since 1898. The following are the notable coaches for their football team:

1. Fielding Yost- he became the coach starting the year 1901. He had the longest tenure as a coach for this team. Under his supervision, he guided the team to win 6 National Championships and 10 Big Conference Titles.

2. Glenn Edward Schembechler Jr. – He was the head coach for the year 1969-1989. He did not have any national titles but he helped the team grab 13 Big Ten Titles. Despite of it all, he still became a hall of famer in 1995.

GAMSAT Courses And Their Significance

GAMSAT is an assessment test for students who desire to pursue a career in medicine. It is an international test introduced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), which is available for students who have either completed their bachelor’s degree or are still continuing with their final year graduate studies. The candidates who crack GAMSAT become eligible for the four year medical degree program and other entry level programs for dental and pharmacy training. The GAMSAT courses offered by prepgenie are designed to help students in honing their reasoning and logical abilities because this is the most important aspect of GAMSAT. The main purpose of GAMSAT is to judge the candidates’ power of understanding and analysing a given situation in the best possible way. To keep the process smooth the questions are divided into various sections. The test requires the candidate to express himself through logical interpretations of questions. Passage interpretation, mathematical solutions, logical reasoning and graphical analysis are few of the areas that are covered by the different course providers catering to GAMSAT aspirants. The main aim of these courses is to teach the candidates the way to approach GAMSAT questions in the most efficient manner. The GAMSAT courses first try to provide a base to your learning and then inform you about the basics of the subjects included in GAMSAT. An all round knowledge of one’s own subject definitely helps in appearing for the GAMSAT. But the most important fact about cracking GAMSAT is surly the presence of a sharp mind right. Being there and giving logical interpretations is all that helps. Candidates cracking the test surely gain a good learning experience through the well designed GAMSAT courses. Moreover, the GAMSAT courses throw light on how an understanding of social sciences and humanities is essential in the medical profession and the fact that GAMSAT puts a lot of focus on this aspect.

The GAMSAT courses offered by the various providers are targeted at those aspirants who dream of achieving greater heights in their interest oriented career. To crack GAMSAT one just needs to be focused and put in a lot more effort in practising and solving more of data based questions. Since GAMSAT has been specifically designed for students aspiring to make it big in the medicinal field, most of the questions are subject related. The test covers the basic science subjects which includes Physics, Chemistry and Biology. But mere knowledge of science will not help when you sit for the test. GAMSAT is focused on analysing the logical reasoning skills of the candidates.

The GAMSAT courses does not lay stress only on logical interpretations. They also focus on honing the written abilities of the candidate. A good knowledge in day to day issues is also stressed upon by the GAMSAT courses because many passages in GAMSAT are based on social and cultural issues. In general the GAMSAT courses seem to cover a wide range of subjects that help the candidate in the long run and at the same time teach the students different strategies of cracking GAMSAT. It provides for an all round grooming of the candidate, and prepares him/her for the next level.

The University of Iowa, Tom Brokaw, and Why Every Student (Young and Old) Should do their Research

The University of Iowa, Tom Brokaw, and Why Every Student (Young and Old) Should do their Research

This past weekend while watching the Michigan vs. Iowa Football game there was a commercial on for one of the Universities that I couldn’t get out of my head, even after the Wolverines’ crushing defeat (and it didn’t help that QB Tate Forcier suffered a concussion either.)

I’m speaking of the recent University of Iowa ads featuring famed broadcaster, Tom Brokaw.  Currently running on a national level, these ads feature the narration skills of the future Hall-of-Fame Broadcaster reciting lines of (Tradition, Respect) same old stuff every other University today does with their commercials to lure unworthy undergraduates and chad-swinging freshman to their schools.

However, when you elect to have a Alumni read something for your institution, you would expect to see a graduation date at the end of the TV ad…or at least the name of the person talking, to gain accreditation for your abilities to get someone to a level of fame (like Brokaw himself).  However, at the end of this ad, there is nothing but “University of Iowa.”  So the question is…why don’t they let people know?

It might be because Mr. Brokaw in fact never graduated from the University of Iowa.  Brokaw himself dropped out after he was unsatisfied with the atmosphere there, saying he majored in “beer and co-eds”. Later, Mr. Brokaw received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of South Dakota in 1964. Besides that, Mr. Brokaw has also been awarded honorary degrees from:

Boston College; Brandeis University, the California Institute of Technology; College of William & Mary; Dartmouth College; Duke University; Emory University; Fairfield University; Fordham University; Florida State University; Johns Hopkins University; Northwestern University; Providence College; Saint Anselm College; University of Notre Dame; University of Oklahoma; University of Pennsylvania; along with Washington University in St. Louis.

Thus, the question I pose to ask is…why University of Iowa?  Why would you have an Alumnus who was unsatisfied with his education at your institution, come back and do a nationally televised commercial?  (Probably because they figured no one would connect the voice to Brokaw and take the time to look it up.) If you knew he was willing to do it…why not give him an honorary degree just for doing that?!?!?  I mean, Emory University gave the man a degree! (And I’m sure it’s a fine school)

So today, I call upon the heads of the University of Iowa to realize exactly what a bad example they have set by having a former dropout lead the way for future students to come to the school and by all guesses, probably major in exactly what Mr. Brokaw did….(“beer and co-eds”)

Nevertheless, there is the result, and I’m sure that when the call actually came from the University of Iowa 46 years after Mr. Brokaw dropped out of the institution, Tom probably dignifiedly just sat back in his chair, recalled his days at the school, took a look at the 19 degrees hanging on his wall, and chuckled.

University of Tennessee Athletics: Their Fans and Traditions

University of Tennessee Athletics: Their Fans and Traditions

People either love or hate the wacky and fun athletic traditions of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. This article reviews some of the best-known traditions of the fans and the teams. You be the judge: are they fun, or over-the-top and obnoxious?

Everyone who has visited Knoxville, Tennessee knows that Knoxville and the rest of East Tennessee becomes a sea of raucous, orange-clad UT fans every time that game time rolls around. And game time rolls around quite often!

The Big Orange craze goes all the way from before the first home football game through the end of basketball season, and for many die-hard fans, it never stops! Heated debates about new recruits, how coaches are doing, and last season vs. next season keep Vol fans going while UT rests in late spring and summer.

UT football is more than a game; for many Vol fans, it’s a way of life. The energy for each game builds to the exploding point by the time more than 100,000 fans line the path for the Vol Walk on game Saturday.

When the Big Orange scores, fireworks explode from the top of Neyland Stadium, and the 100,000-strong crowd roars Rocky Top along with the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. All together, it’s an incredible experience to be a part of.

One thing’s sure: the crazy enthusiasm that is Big Orange Country means a lot of support for UT Athletics, and the players and coaches know that the fans play a big role in the overall success of athletics at UT.

Another long-standing football tradition is UT’s Pride of the Southland Marching Band. On game day, the band follows a parade sequence that takes them through the center of campus, into Neyland Stadium, onto the field, and ends with the “Opening of the T”, through which the football team runs at the beginning of the game.

Many young football players (and UT fans of all ages) dream of running through the Pride’s big T!

University of Tennessee fans have also made “Rocky Top” a tradition at Volunteer athletic events. If you don’t know the tune before you go to a UT game (not very likely – but anything’s possible!), you’ll definitely know it by the end of the game. The more good plays UT makes, the better you’ll know it!

In 1962, George Mooney, a former Tennessee broadcaster, began a UT tradition when he traveled by boat up the Tennessee River to Neyland Stadium for a UT football game. The idea caught on, and soon so many people traveled to games by boat that they began to call themselves the Volunteer Navy.

The Vol Navy has become a giant floating tailgate party for often more than 200 ski and bass boats, houseboats and yachts that arrive and drop anchor on each game day.

Here’s something that appears it may become a new UT Athletics tradition: the UT basketball Men’s coach, Bruce Pearl (who is in his much-anticipated second season at UT), had his players spread out to the exits of Thompson-Bowling arena to thank fans (both home and away fans) for supporting the team after their first home game, and invited the fans to come back. And Pearl was right there at an exit with them.

How cool is that?! It certainly stuck with a lot of the fans who were at the game, and has broght Tennessee out in larger and larger numbers.

These are just a few of the traditions that teams and fans follow at the University of Tennessee athletic events. Truly, going to see a University of Tennessee game is a unique experience that every sorts fan would enjoy!
