Background On “30 Seconds To Mars” And Where To Catch The Next Tour

30 Seconds to Mars was created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, and it really just started as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, however, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After a small revolving door of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Milicevic to finalize the band’s roster.

According to an interview from Virgin Records, the band’s name “actually comes from a thesis that [the band] found online [that] was written by a former Harvard professor. And one of the subsections of the thesis was titled ‘thirty seconds to mars’ and he goes on to talk about the expediential growth of technology that relates to humans and saying that we are quite literally thirty seconds to mars. What it means to us is, we thought it best described our music, in short.”

Although Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he originally preferred not to use this information to promote the band; in fact, the band used to refuse to play at venues that used his fame to promote shows.

30 Seconds to Mars’ first, self-titled album, produced by Bob Ezrin, was released in 2002 to mixed reviews and achieved sales of just over 100,000.

The band’s second album, A Beautiful Lie, was released on August 30, 2005. For this effort, the band traveled (during the course of three years) to four different continents, including five different countries, to perfect their sound and also to allow for Jared’s film career. The album was produced by Josh Abraham, whose producing credits also include Orgy, Velvet Revolver, and Linkin Park .

Because A Beautiful Lie was leaked five months before its release, the band decided to include two bonus tracks: “Battle of One” (an original song that was also set to be the album’s title track when it was first announced) and “Hunter” (a cover of the Björk song of the same name). To further promote the album, the band also enclosed “golden tickets” in 12 copies, which grant their owners access to any 30 Seconds to Mars concert free of charge, along with backstage access.

On August 31, 2006 the band won the MTV2 Award for “The Kill” at the MTV Video Music Awards, one of their two nominations. The second nomination was for best rock video; however, they lost to AFI’s “Miss Murder.” The music video is loosely based on the film The Shining. A Beautiful Lie was certified platinum by the RIAA in January for distribution of over 1,000,000 albums.

In October, the band began the “Welcome to the Universe” tour, sponsored by MTV2. 30 Seconds to Mars were supported on this tour by Head Automatica, The Receiving End of Sirens, Cobra Starship, and several other bands including The Street Drum Corps. On November 20, MTV2 premiered the video for “From Yesterday”; the video is the first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People’s Republic of China .

As of Spring 2007, the band is supporting The Used as a part of the Taste of Chaos tour and have scheduled a string of dates in Europe supporting Linkin Park .

30 Seconds to Mars are also scheduled to play Roskilde, Rock am Ring, Pinkpop, and Download festivals; on April 29 they will perform at the AVMAs for which they have been nominated for three, and will then begin working on their third album.

On March 1, 2007, bassist Matt Wachter announced his departure from the band live on stage during the band’s El Paso , Texas Taste of Chaos set. This was confirmed the following day with a statement on the band’s website.  He has since been replaced by Tim Kelleher (not the actor), who has been seen playing at the band’s concerts. It is unknown if this is a temporary or permanent change.

On May 2, 2007, the band has announced that “A Beautiful Lie” had won and would be the next single.

On July 21, 2007, it was announced that 30 Seconds To Mars had won second place in the Jabra Music Best Band in the World contest, based on votings around the world. 30 Seconds To Mars will be going on a concert tour soon. Planning a Michigan College Tour

TIPS FOR PLANNING A MICHIGAN COLLEGE  TOUR

Family vacations for most people typically include a trip to the beach, a day at a theme park, or an overnight stay at a campground.  But if your plans for a vacation this year include inspecting dorm rooms, eating cafeteria food and listening to young enthusiastic tour guides, then you are probably the parent of a high school senior.  And, you are not alone.  According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, estimates are there will be approximately 115,062 seniors graduating from Michigan public and private high schools in the summer of 2010.  Of this number, roughly 47.5% (or 54,626) will attend college next fall, and those future freshmen are beginning to make their college plans now. 

One of the items high on the to-do list is the college campus tour. “Tours offer a quick way for students to decide whether a school is right for them and whether they will even consider applying to it,” said Catherine Healy, President of Michigan College Tour, “Next to cost, a campus visit can have the biggest influence in choosing a college.”   A college education is an important and expensive purchase, so with only an hour or two to form an opinion about a school, make the best use of a campus visit and develop a personal college tour plan before you go.

Before the Tour

Do your homework.  Make a list of colleges and universities that appeal to you and your child and determine whether the schools meet your criteria of academic offerings, location, extra-curricular student activities, and financial affordability.   Visit each school without leaving home by taking an online virtual tour which many college websites now offer.   The more you know about a college ahead of time, the less time you will waste visiting schools that don’t meet your needs.

Register in advance.  Check the schedules for campus tours and informational sessions since most schools require advance registration.   Some colleges limit the number of visits on a certain day and their available space fills up quickly.   A good resource for this information is the Michigan College Tour Campus Visit Calendar found at  http://www.michigancollegetour.com/ which posts a calendar of scheduled campus visits and open houses for all Michigan colleges and universities. 

Map out your itinerary and make hotel reservations.  Plan short trips and focus on schools in a single geographic area.  Don’t attempt to visit more than two schools a day; otherwise it all becomes a blur. Many campuses are big and sprawling so it is a good idea to print out a campus map before your arrival. Local hotels will often offer discounts for college visitors, so be sure to ask for any specials that may be available. Give your child the responsibility of handling the tasks of researching schools, scheduling visits and planning the itinerary.  This is their first step into adulthood and should be allowed to take the lead in the planning.

While on the Tour

Engage the tour guide.  Most college visits are led by a tour guide who is typically a student at the college.  Be prepared to ask about his or her personal experiences such as;  Why did you choose this college? Why did you stay after freshman year?  What do you like best about your classes?  Are faculty members accessible and supportive?  What do you do during the weekends? What are your plans for after graduation?

Take a step back.  It’s important to let your son or daughter ask the questions and direct the conversation. You can always call the admissions counselor at a later time to ask your specific questions.

Be attentive and polite.  This applies to both parent and child. Talking on your cell phone, texting friends, or talking loudly when others are trying to listen to the presentation is rude.  Put the cell phone and Blackberry away and give your tour guide the attention and courtesy they deserve.  

After the Tour

Take time to digest.  Don’t ask “what did you think?” on your way out of the campus parking lot.  Give your child some time to process the things they observed and don’t be discouraged by his or her initial lack of enthusiasm.  For most teenagers used to their small high school environment, a visit to a large college campus can be an overwhelming experience.   Have your child bring a notebook so they can jot down their impressions after each visit.  Encourage them to take pictures too.   Later, have a nice meal at a quiet place and allow your child to share their opinions before offering your own judgment of the school.

Have fun.  Take time to relax by the hotel pool, see the local tourist spots and just enjoy the time spent with your son or daughter.  Being in such close proximity with your teen for so many hours can be a real test of nerves or it can be a unique opportunity.  Have your child remove their ear buds, turn off their cell phone,  even let them drive,  and use the time in the car to talk and bond with your offspring .

Follow-up and stay organized.  Prompt follow up with a college or university is important to making a good impression.  Be sure to write down the names of all the personnel you met with and send them a thank you note or personal e-mail.  Purchase a file box to store all of the college information accumulated during your trip and to collect all of the admissions correspondence that will soon follow.

With the official start of the 2010 college application season quickly approaching (September 1st for many schools), today is the right the time to schedule your campus tours.  And if you visit now before most high school classes begin again after Labor Day, your child will have a head start in the fall when they are trying madly to complete their college applications, do homework, and participate in their many high school senior activities.

Hello From Chicago – Part 4 – A Personal Tour Of The Chicago Cultural Center

Yesterday, after our lovely Austrian breakfast we went downtown to the Chicago Cultural Center, the main downtown information hub for tourists, to ask some questions about the Pullman Historic District, a planned industrial community, built in the 1880s by industrial magnate George Pullman, creator of the famous Pullman sleeper cars. We figured this would be an interesting place to visit since it brings together architecture, social and industrial history, and it would really give us insight into one of the most interesting personalities of Chicago’s history.

To get more information about this neighbourhood we talked to one of the volunteer greeters who staff the Chicago Cultural Center and offer their local expertise to visitors free of charge. The Chicago Greeter program today offers 150 greeters speaking 20 languages and the Greeter program is one of the best ways of getting to know the city through the eyes of a local resident.

As a matter of fact, I had registered electronically for a Chicago Greeter Tour prior to my departure, but something had gone wrong with my registration and as a result I was not assigned a greeter. The good thing is that the City of Chicago also offers “InstaGreeters” – local volunteers / experts who take people on downtown walking tours without the necessity of a prior registration.

This is how we happened upon our very own personal InstaGreeter tour: Chicago Greeter and local expert Don talked to us a bit about the Pullman Historic District, but the more we talked, and the more he saw that we were really interested, he asked us whether we wanted a 20 minute tour of the Chicago Cultural Center. Considering that this is a Chicago landmark we readily agreed.

The Chicago Cultural Center was originally dedicated in 1897 as the city’s original Public Library. It is an impressive limestone-faced building with intricate details, marble staircases, patterned ceilings, beautiful floor mosaics and two impressive stained glass domes. The cupola on the south side of the building is the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome.

Today the Cultural Center houses one of the city’s Visitor Information Centers , various galleries, exhibition and meeting spaces, the Landmark Chicago Gallery which displays photographs from the permanent collection of Chicago landmarks, the 294-seat Claudia Cassidy Theater as well as the Studio Theater and various other facilities. You can even get married inside the Chicago Cultural Center.

Designed in the beaux-arts style by the Boston firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, the Chicago Cultural Center was completed in 1897 and dedicated as the city’s original Chicago Public Library. Completed at a cost of nearly million, this remarkable monument was inspired by the neo-classical style of the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.

To start off, Don told us that the name of the city of Chicago is an Indian word for “stinky onion swamp”. He also explained that Chicago is a city of superlatives: 3 of the world’s 10 highest buildings are located here. Chicago is also widely considered to be the birthplace of modern architecture and a living museum of architecture, showcasing some of the world’s most famous architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Gehry.

Chicago likes to do everything big. The world’s largest public library is located here: the Harold Washington Library Center houses 2 million books. Chicago is also home to the largest building in the United States (excluding the Pentagon): the Merchandise Mart has 90 acres of floor space, housed in an Art Deco landmark. Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the world’s largest fountains. Chicago also has the only river in the world that flows backwards. Engineers reversed the Chicago River in 1900 for sanitary purposes. Here’s another interesting fact: Chicago also has the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw.

Our local expert Don took us through the building and showed us the two stained glass domes, the exhibit halls, the photo collection of Chicago landmarks, and to keep going along the line of superlatives, Don gave us a brief synopsis of Millennium Park, located right across Michigan Avenue from the Chicago Cultural Center. The idea for Millennium Park was conceived by famous mayor Richard M. Daley, and with the help of private sector donations Millennium Park has become one of the most impressive outdoor venues anywhere. The project cost 5 million, of which 0 million were financed privately.

Our Chicago Greeter Don, a former vice-president at Motorola, is very knowledgeable about the history of Chicago and very passionate about his city. His pride in his city is obvious, and there is a lot to be proud of. For me, Chicago’s waterfront including Grant Park, the lakefront trail and its beaches are some of the most awesome features of this city. In total Chicago has more than 7300 acres of parkland, 552 parks, 33 beaches, nine museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons, 10 bird and wildlife gardens, and it’s not surprising that Chicago has won numerous awards including “Best City in the World” and other accolades.

With Don’s help we got a great overview of the Cultural Center and a bit of insight into Chicago’s interesting history. It was the perfect preparation for our tour of the Pullman Historic District, an industrial community created by George Pullman, an industrial despot, yet a foresightful social entrepreneur who, according to Don, was universally despised.

Armed with a bit of background knowledge we were looking forward to our exploration of Pullman’s social experiment.

The University of Texas at Austin, with its main campus no more than a mile away from the State Capitol of Texas, is the famous research university at the heart of Texas.
