Many people dream of going to college, and in many families it is expected that the children will follow in their family’s footsteps and attend an institution of higher learning.  It can be overwhelming selecting the appropriate universities, because there are so many of them.  However, there are some basic truths about universities that will help you in your search to learn more about universities and colleges, so that you can select the one that will work best for you.

There are universities located in each state of the country.  Universities, which also can go by the name of colleges, typically offer four-year programs leading to a Bachelor’s degree when completed.  Some schools also offer graduate degrees that build upon the knowledge gained from the Bachelor’s degree program.  State universities in the past had been known as colleges that offered practical degrees, especially those in agriculture.  However, today’s state universities provide college degrees in a wide range of subject areas, and are typically less expensive to attend than other schools.

Universities and colleges usually will also offer on-campus housing for their students.  In many instances, younger students are required to live in campus dormitories until they reach a certain age, although this varies from school to school.

Colleges, universities, and other accredited schools will offer financial aid to students who wish to attend and are currently attending.  Many students find that if they can find enough scholarships when they graduate from high school to get them through their freshman year at college, once on campus they find that there typically are more scholarships available for which they may apply.  If you want to attend colleges, universities, community colleges or other schools, it is a great idea to contact their office of financial aid to see what financial aid is available.  You may be awarded Pell Grants from the Federal government, which do not have to be repaid and are used for paying tuition.  Other grants may be available if you have good grades and are financially challenged.  Scholarships are granted to students, and this money does not have to be repaid either.  In addition, there are college loans available, which require repayment after a short grace period after you graduate.

Applications to American Universities

For the most part, applying to an American university is the same for international students as it is for students within the country. However, there are some special considerations that need to be made when applying.

Regardless of what country you are from, you will need to complete the minimum requirements for test scores and high school (or the equal to it in your country) grade point averages for that specific university. You can find out what the minimums for each university are on the university’s website, or by contacting a university representative. You will need to complete the SAT and ACT test for most any university, though some only require one test or the other to be taken. Because these tests cost money, it’s always best to figure out which scores you need, so you can exclude any unnecessary testing.

However, while these are generally the only tests that need to be taken for applicants native to America, international students will sometimes have to complete additional tests to be considered for admittance. The most common test is the Test of English as an International Language or TOFL. This test checks that you are fluent enough in English to both comprehend your courses and lectures and, readily interact with professors and other mentors on the university campus.

After being admitted to the university of your choice, you will need to obtain a visa – this ensures that you will, indeed, be able to travel to America without governmental or immigration complications stopping you. If you are a temporary student participating in an exchange program, then you will need a J-1 visa – which will allow you to stay in the country, but only for a stated amount of time. For those staying for the full duration of their degree plan, a F-1 visa will be needed. This visa allows a much longer stay, but requires much more paperwork, meaning that you should, by all means, apply early.

Finally, you must submit evidence of your financial ability to cover the educational costs of at least two semesters. That means the, Certificate of Financial Resources and an official or certified copy of bank statement are required before the I-20 is issued. Make sure to have a way to bring or send the money to the university. It is also good to contact the university ahead of time to learn about their tuition and fees payment options. This will ensure there are no complications in the payment being fulfilled and will keep you from being charged a late fee.

Think about it: is that truly a wise thing to base your choice of school on?

Instead, it’s best to choose a school that excels in other areas such as economic standing and how well established they are.

First, consider the economic climate of the area where the university is located. This is something that is commonly overlooked by those choosing universities even within the country – and it certainly shouldn’t be. America has experienced significant economic recession in recent years, but that does not mean that it has hit all of the country. The “Heartland” of America (i.e. center of America) has been noted by many economic experts as being the area that has been hurt the least by this recession, with some areas seemingly being completely unaffected. Why does this matter to you? Simple: if you go to university in a town with poor economic standing, then it will be highly difficult to find a job while you’re in school to help with paying your tuition and living expenses.

Second, think about how well-established the university is. How long has it been around, and what are its founding roots? Universities that have been around for a long time already have a stable base to work from, and therefore have extremely low risks of being closed for financial (or any other) reasons – making your education something you can count on. The founding roots of a university would be the history of how and why it was founded – many universities in America are very proud of their roots, and if the founding principles are something you can relate to, then you’re more likely to “click” with that university.

Finally, make sure you go somewhere that has a full and well-established center for international students. You are going to need to have someone consistently available to answer questions, as there will likely be many during your stay. Differences between countries and the cultures can be very confusing, and being sure that you are surrounded with a supportive and helpful staff can ensure that you get your questions answered as promptly and fully as possible.

New York State University (PSU) is a public state urban university situated in heart of New York, New York, U.S. Established in 1946; it has the largest total registration in the state of New York, comprising undergraduate and graduate students.
