An assessment carried out by AllAboutUni.com found that Scotland has the highest density of the World’s Top-500 universities in the United Kingdom. AllAboutUni.com is an independent, global and interactive website where visitors can obtain information about universities (global rankings, student reviews, university news and campus pictures).

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is produced by the Institute of Higher Education at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University . Several indicators of academic or research performance are used to establish the ranking, these include highly cited researchers, articles indexed in major citation indices and staff winning Nobel Prizes.

The World’s Top-500 universities (2008) are mainly located in Europe (n=210; 40%), the Americas (n=190; 40%) and the Asian/Pacific region (n=100; 20%). There are 42 (8%) universities located in the United Kingdom (UK), representing 20% of the universities in Europe.

The top-10 universities in the UK are: University of Cambridge (ranked 4th in the world), the University of Oxford (10th), University College London (22nd), Imperial College London (27th), The University of Manchester (40th), University of Edinburgh (55th), University of Bristol (61st), University of Sheffield (77th), King’s College London (81st) and University of Nottingham (82nd).

The UK has the highest number of universities in the World’s Top-500 universities (42) compared to the other European countries: Germany (40), France (23), Italy (22), the Netherlands (12), Sweden (11) and Spain (9). In the ranking of Europe’s Top-10 universities, five are located in the UK and in the Top-25 universities, 9 are located in the United Kingdom.

The overall number of universities per million inhabitants in industrialised countries is 0.5. An earlier assessment found that small countries in Western Europe (Sweden (1.2), Finland (1.1) and Switzerland (1.0)) and New Zealand (1.2) have the highest number of universities per million inhabitants.

The number of universities in the World’s Top-500 universities that are located in the UK is 0.7 per million inhabitants, which compares favourably with other large industrialized countries: Canada (0.6), Germany (0.5), United States (0.5), France (0.4), Italy (0.4) and Japan (0.2). For the four regions of the United Kingdom, the numbers are as follows: Scotland (1.0), England (0.7), Wales (0.7) and Northern Ireland (0.6).

Conclusions
Within the UK, Scotland has a much higher density of top universities compared to England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland also performs very well compared to other industrialised countries and the number of Scottish universities per million inhabitants is one of the highest in the world.

Dating back to the 1800′s the use of mascots in colleges and universities has helped to foster pride and raise the spirit of fans. At the earliest incarnation, mascots used on college and university campuses for sports were largely live animals. This has become a tradition and some campuses still practice this even today. Mascots for hundreds perhaps thousands of years have been viewed as symbols of luck.

This is why some college and universities will still bring out a live animal onto the field as a mascot to get the crowd involved. Animals such as: lions, tigers, buffaloes, and bulldogs have been used as live mascots to name a few. The Colorado Buffaloes will often bring a buffalo out onto their home field during half-time. Boosters at most campuses supply the necessary funds for the feeding and upkeep of live mascots.

Use of Live Mascots a Controversy for Colleges and Universities

However, the use of live animals as mascots on college and university campuses has been fraught with controversy. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has had much to say about the use of animals as mascots over the years. Many people in the group feel that it is unethical and perhaps unhealthy to keep animals in captivity for the sole purpose of being a mascot. Their concern arises amid some animal mascots dying such as a tiger from renal failure.

PETA argues that the cages that the animals are kept in are barely large enough to allow for free movement. Also, sometimes temperatures can be extreme and having thousands of fans in one place near the animal can cause it distress. Rival schools will at times steal the mascot of other schools. This is an ongoing controversy that hasn’t come to a clean end. Some colleges and universities view using live animal mascots as a long standing tradition that is harmless. Animal rights activists feel it is inhumane and unethical and needs to end.

Many Mascots Resemble Those in Professional Sports

Several colleges and universities don’t use live mascots. Their mascots are very much like the ones seen at professional football, soccer, and basketball games. Someone wears a suit and becomes the personality for the team. A lot of intense training can go into becoming a mascot for a college or university. The person has to have a high level of energy, be enthusiastic and engaging, be able to give the mascot “personality,” and adopt gestures befitting a mascot.

Many will learn dances, mime, perform skits, waves flags with the crowds, or hold up signs to get the crowd involved. It is quite the acting job and demands that the person performing as the mascot maintain consistent, upbeat, and positive behavior. It’s not only important for the mascot to interact with other college students. A mascot needs to be accessible to all college and university fans such as alumni, community, faculty, and children of fans.

College and University Mascots aren’t Always Stereotypical

The use of mascots in colleges and universities do not always fall along stereotypical lines. Mascots are often patterned for characteristics of the school or the students attending the schools. The boll weevil has been used in college sports as the mascot for The University of Arkansas at Monticello. Some would argue that it doesn’t look like a formidable foe. Yet, it is one of the biggest detriments to cotton crops in the U.S.

The Fighting Okra is the mascot representing Delta State. Fans of the school’s team were opposed to using the vegetable because they didn’t feel it portrayed the right image. Some argued that it was mean, green, and indigenous to the Southern region of America. Given this reasoning the mascot name has stuck.

The University of Hawaii-Hilo has taken a different approach with their mascot. They have emulated the Vulcans of Star Trek fan and made them their mascot. Their reasoning is due to the large amount of volcanic activity through the islands, the name fits perfectly.

In one’s life, universities are the career shapers. Today, after completing 10 + 2 level of school education, students join any university or college affiliated with a university in general or technical discipline for completion of under graduate courses, which eventually opens the door for the real job market as well as for higher studies at post graduate and research level. Chhattisgarh has a number of universities for providing higher education at different levels, viz; diploma, under graduate, post graduate and research. Courses are offered in different streams like humanities, arts, sciences, commerce and many more.

All the state universities in Chhattisgarh come under the purview of Government of Chhattisgarh. The Honorable Governor General of Chhattisgarh State is Chancellor of these universities. The Vice Chancellor heads the University.

When students pass the 10 + 2 level of examination, they are required to submit application forms for different universities/university colleges to join a course. The selection is normally made on the basis of merit in the last qualifying examination or on the basis of entrance test conducted by the University for the Purpose, or on the basis of both. In some cases, interviews are also conducted. Generally, students require submitting separate application form for individual university or university college. At the same time, students require detailed and up to date information about a university / university college like about the university, courses offered or admission details etc., and gaining the required know-how about individual institute or university is rigorous task. 6. Kushabhau Thakre Patrkarita Avam Jansanchar Vishwavidyalaya, Chhattisgarh

7. Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Chhattisgarh

8. Pandit Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University, Chhattisgarh

The Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU), Chhattisgarh was established on 21 January 2005 for providing courses in engineering and technology including architecture and pharmacy. The university offers different programs starting from Diploma level to Post Graduate level.

Guru Ghasidas University started functioning from 6 June 1983 for providing higher education in different study disciplines at under graduate and postgraduate level. This is a member university of the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university has received a B+ grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University Commission (UGC) of India has given affiliating university status to the Guru Ghasidas University.

Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur is a renowned university for providing training in agricultural sciences and allied disciplines at the Under Graduate and Postgraduate level. The university was established on 20 June 1987 in the Raipur District.
