Michigan Schools Maxed Out on Charters, But Parents Want More

The children of thousands of families within the Michigan schools are on waiting lists for admittance to charter schools. Not only does this underscores the parents’ commitment to school choice, but it also indicates their desire for their children to have a better education — one they obviously do not believe they can achieve in the traditional Michigan schools.

Like many other states, the Michigan schools has a cap of 150 on the number of charter schools each district may have. These caps were seen as necessary in the beginning for a couple of reasons: (1) To ensure they were successful before they exploded on the scene, and (2) to ensure the traditional public schools were not lost all together.

The Michigan schools is currently maxed out at the 150 maximum university-chartered state schools. There actually are 230 charters in Michigan, but 80 are exempt from the cap. For example, a Native American operated charter comes under the control of the federal government and is exempt.

Enrollment in charter Michigan schools was at 91,567 during the 2005-2006 school year. That is 5.3 percent of all Michigan schools students that year and up by 10,000 students over the previous year.

Not all Michigan schools charters are successful, according to reports. Overall, however, they are succeeding for some students where the traditional schools have failed. Though charters schools are not for all students, many parents seek educational alternatives for their children to get them out of the mainstream and into more innovative methods to motivate their children to learn. Many parents are tired of the problems with the public school system that is inadequate and produces underachieving young adults. Charters become an even higher priority for parents with children in failing traditional schools, appearing to be their way out.

Basically, charters in Michigan are independent public schools that generally are chartered by a state university. They have more flexibility in how they educate Michigan schools students, not required to adhere to all of the rigid rules that traditional schools must follow. Though many people mistakenly believe that charters take the wealthy, white students away from the traditional Michigan schools, the fact is that charter students are predominantly urban, minority and low-income.

As with traditional schools, charters receive per student funding with the amount being the same for all students. For charters, this means that there are few operating as high schools, since it costs more to operate grades nine through 12. For example, there are only five high school charter schools out of 22 total charters in Kent and Ottawa counties, with one closing this summer. More high school charters are needed with the long waiting lists and parents clamoring to have their children admitted. Why do so many want to believe in aliens?

Category : Region III

Why do so many want to believe in aliens?

Science has no problem with the concept of alien intelligent life. Quite the opposite in fact. Most scientists would accept that it is highly probable that we are not alone in the universe. The reason for thinking this is straightforward. Science believes that life arose on earth almost four billion years ago from lifeless chemicals and understands how it evolved from that original simple single form into the myriad forms of life, including human life, that presently populate the earth. There is no reason in principle therefore to think that equivalent events have not happened on earth-like planets elsewhere in the universe.

For the last 70 odd years, human civilisation has been broadcasting evidence of its existence to the universe at large in the form of radiowaves. These waves, emanating from our radio/television newscasts and entertainment programmes, shoot off into outer space at the speed of light. We have also deliberately sent radio messages into space, giving basic information about life on earth, hoping to contact alien civilisations. And, since we are doing this, we expect that alien civilisations elsewhere in the universe who are at least as technologically capable as ourselves, will be doing likewise. A widely known scientific enterprise has been established, called the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Seti), that actively scans the skies for incoming radio messages from alien civilisations. No messages have been detected to date.

In 1977, Voyager 1 and 2 space probes were launched. They carry special golden records that bear recordings of life on Earth – pictures of people, scenery, plants, the song of a whale and greetings from Earth in 55 languages. They also locate Earth in our solar system, and our solar system in the galaxy. The records bear instructions for how they should be played.

The physicist Dr Frank Drake has estimated the likely number of alien civilisations in our own Milky Way galaxy that may be attempting to contact other civilisations and he has expressed his calculations in an equation called the Drake Equation. This takes into account the rate of formation of stars like our sun, the proportion that have orbiting earth-like planets, the proportion of these on which life arose, and so on. Drake estimates that our Milky Way contains 10,000 civilisations interested in making communications with others.

Scientists believe that by far the most likely way an alien civilisation on another planet might learn of our existence would be by detecting and deciphering our radio signals. Having detected our signals they might then be moved either to signal back to us or to physically come to visit us, or both. We have detected no intelligent radio signals yet and it also seems extremely unlikely that physical visitations could have occurred. Intelligent radio signals have emanated from earth only for the past 70 years. Even if aliens made a beeline for earth, travelling at the speed of light, immediately on receipt of our signals, only aliens from the few nearest star systems to earth could be involved and the probability that these star systems harbour intelligent life is remote.

The best known “alien visitation” incident occurred in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, where members of the public witnessed something crashing to earth. Witnesses also saw “alien bodies” being removed from the wreckage. The US airforce was quickly on the scene and took away the debris. An army press officer first described the object as a flying saucer, but this was quickly denied and it was claimed that the object was an army weather balloon.

This confusion was seized on by unidentified flying object (UFO) supporters who claimed that the whole thing was a huge cover-up. The US airforce conducted a comprehensive investigation of the incidence in 1994 and confirmed that the object that crashed was a weather balloon and the “alien bodies” were test dummies on board the balloon.

UFO enthusiasts continue to believe that an alien craft crashed at Roswell in 1947 and that the US government covered the whole thing up. The Roswell incident inflamed interest in UFOs around the world and this interest persists. Belief in alien visits to earth is now widespread. A US National Science Foundation poll in 2001 found that 30 per cent of people believe that some of the many UFOs “sighted” every year come from alien civilisations. Sixty one per cent of British teenagers believe that aliens visit earth.

Why are people so willing to believe that aliens are visiting earth? It’s not that the evidence amounts to much. Despite the hundreds of thousands of UFOs that have been sighted over the years I don’t think there is even one clear photograph of a craft that cannot be clearly identified as an earthly creation. The weight of evidence that exists doesn’t seem to weigh more than the evidence for the existence of Big Foot, Nessie or The Abominable Snowman.

The reason so many are willing to believe in current visitations by aliens is probably psychological. We are social animals and fear solitude. Deep down we fear the idea that we may be alone in the universe and we would wish it otherwise. We don’t want to be alone.

About Molly Larkey I Want to be Artist

Molly Larkey’s The Revolutionary playfully incorporates elements of formalist abstraction with its symbolic subject matter. Constructed from a variety of materials, Larkey gives her sculpture a rainbow treatment of brightly coloured paint, each rough hewn component compiling as a topsy-turvy monument, inciting both Modernist art history and hippie psychedelia. With her theatrical assemblage, Larkey frames these disparate ideas as humorously dysfunctional; relating the dynamics of power with the festivity of grass roots endeavour.

Our Want Met by Rodney Howard Browne

Category : Region I

Our Want Met by Rodney Howard Browne

Across the Bible, we see God reaching out to His creation to try to save and revive. Naturally, nowhere is this more obvious than in the New Testament and especially in the Gospels thru the life of His boy. Jesus came to earth to find and save those that were spiritually lost and bound by sin.
By His own profession, He makes this clear when He tells His supporters that he didn’t come to judge humankind, but to save the lost from an eternal death ( John 3:17 ). Frequently we are nearly convinced to think that God is too wrapped up in the details of the universe to be concerned about our issues. Jesus was and still is totally curious about the lives of each one of us. Even after His crucifixion, His intimate concern was for those He loved.
one example of this is the compassion He had for Mary as she searched for Him at the empty crypt.
He witnessed Mary’s deep sorrow and was moved with compassion. ‘Mary!’ Jesus called out to her. When she saw the Lord she knew her requests had been answered. What’s your best need? Call out to the Savior, and he’ll meet that need .
There are a lot times in life when we are overwhelmed by feelings of despair and despair. In our weakness and dismay, we become so fretful and alarmed that we even lose sight of the guarantees of Almighty God.
Even in our complaining and supplications, we hardly know what to ask because our vision is so limited.
That is, while we would like to see things change, He would like us to alter. In our weakness, we cry out for relief while the sanctified Holy Spirit is sieving our groaning through the will of the Lord God. And His petitions are always heard because they perfectly fit God’s great purposes for our lives.
that’s why the apostle Paul was so certain about all things collaborating for good to folks who love God. He claimed,’we know,’ not’we hope.’ He talked with guarantee, not in terms like’maybe,”if,’ or’but.’ similarly, this certainty takes in’all things,’ not just some things.

About Rodney Howard Browne

Rodney Howard Browne explains that even in human relations, you can fail if you don’t work on the relationship and if you leave everything up to the other person. WE are people who must stick to the Lord. Accept accountability for your life and your blessing ; do not be lazy, lackadaisical, or sloppy in your walk with the daddy ; don’t take Him for granted. If you’d like God’s best in your life, if you would like His blessings, you need to press in to Him and stick to Him and His word as if your life relies on it as it does. Don’t miss this crucial meeting this week.

Want a Career with Job Security Try the Medical Field

Want a Career with Job Security Try the Medical Field

From medical assistants to physicians the medical field has always offered wonderful career opportunities. This activity field will always provide job security and great income as the demand is growing so there won’t be any problems in the future finding a need for the medical professional.

There are many different activities in this large field and they are all well paid so one can chose one convenient to his needs.

Another important point that will help decide in choosing a medical career is that one can choose from a lot of activities in the field that offer flexible time and some days per week to work and great payment. Of course, there are also full time jobs and nigh and emergencies careers for people that consider suited for these jobs, jobs witch come with great compensations but really need dedicated persons for it.

Starting with medical assistant to registered nurses, from psychologists and psychiatrists to social workers all are in great demand and will be needed as long as humanity will last.

The salary is more than motivating, the program also but many people get into a medical career for many different motivations. Some want to know themselves and how their body functions in order to cure people or they even suffer from diseases that they hope one day will find a cure. Some really have a heart for social working; some love the clean working conditions and the respect of the people for what they are doing. The most gifted persons in the field combine the psychic care and encouragements to their patient to the medications prescribed. These fields surely offer many great rewards and extreme contentment on all plans, from social to spiritual and financial ones.

In pediatrics, the medical field is wide open. Careers for child psychologists and nurses are available and of course, physicians who are ready to go to work in private practice or as an important part of a family group practice will be pleasantly surprised with their working environments in most cases.

Medical Assistants are responsible for administrative and clinical tasks. These assistants are responsible for keeping health care offices running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office. Some of the tasks performed medical assistants include taking vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, or assisting doctors with examinations. Medical assistants also collect specimens, administer medication as authorized by a physician and telephone prescriptions to pharmacies. They are also responsible for taking blood, changing sutures and dressing, and keeping examination rooms clean and tidy.

Medical assistants can move up in their careers by specializing in particular healthcare areas. There are also advancement opportunities by moving up to office manager. With additional certification and education, medical assistants can advance to other health care jobs such as nursing. Healthcare employers prefer graduates of formal programs in medical assisting. Such programs are offered in vocational-technical high schools, postsecondary vocational schools, and community and junior colleges. Postsecondary programs usually last 1-year, resulting in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years, resulting in an associate degree.

Nurses are hands-on health professionals who provide focused and highly personalized care. The field has a wide range of career opportunities, ranging from entry-level practitioner to doctoral-level researcher. Although an entry-level nurse can find a job with a two-year RN degree, there is a growing national movement to require all nurses to hold a BSN. An increasing number of nursing schools are offering accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. There also are a growing number of RN-to-MSN and MSN-to-Ph.D. programs, designed to meet the increasing demand for more highly skilled nurses in the workforce.

In addition, nursing has four Advanced Practice clinical professions, each of which requires a master’s degree and separate certification: Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse, Anesthetist, Nurse-Midwife and Nurse Practitioner.

Very good employment opportunities are expected for pharmacists over the 2000-10 period because the number of degrees granted in pharmacy are not expected to be as numerous as the number of job openings created by employment growth and the need to replace pharmacists who retire. Pharmacy is the third largest health profession in the United States, and pharmacists are consistently ranked as one of the most highly trusted professionals. They care for patients, dispense medications and monitor patient health and progress to maximize their response to the medication. Pharmacists also lend their expertise on the composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties and their manufacture and use. Thank a pharmacist for ensuring your medication’s strength and purity, and for assuring that drugs don’t interact in a harmful way.

Dermatology offers registered nurses, PAs and medical techs many possibilities and often the dermatology offices are closed either on Monday or Friday which again, offers appeal. Dermatologists draw good salaries and career minded physicians can work alone in private practice or in a group.

If these few examples of jobs in this field convinced you, move further and see what you have to do next.

Beginning your search for a career, look online at the Occupational Handbook placed online by the US Labor board and see if you can find a career that’s not only in high demand but one which will satisfy your long term goals for salary and educational requirements. Be familiar with your career opportunities before you lock yourself into a permanent career choice.

Career planning programs are designed to help you choose a medical specialty and select and apply to a residency program. This four-phase process will guide you through the elements of career planning, including self-understanding, exploring a variety of medical careers, and finally choosing a specialty to meet your career objectives.

There are several colleges that train students for careers such as Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, Medical Billing/ Coding Specialist, Clinical Research and many others. College’s focus is not just on getting through the course material, but to make students “industry-ready”.

Career training can sometimes cost money, and especially degrees can cost significantly. There are scholarship websites to help you get the degree you want, and there are state programs available to help you pay for other types of career training.

Master Online Special Education Degree – for Teachers Who Want to Make a Difference

Category : Region II

Master Online Special Education Degree – for Teachers Who Want to Make a Difference

How will the master online special education degree equip those teachers who want to make a difference? The answer is straightforward – in the USA, currently there are over 6 million students who have enrolled in these special programs.

While schools – public and private, preschool to secondary – struggle to identify and deploy qualified teachers to address these 6 million students, nobody knows for sure how many million students more need to be identified for special classes, so that they can better cope with their learning disabilities, or physical and mental handicaps.

At the same time, successive Federal and State Administrations since 1975 have sharpened their focus on creating complex systems for identifying, formulating, and delivering a highly-individualized education program to each eligible student. The cornerstone of these legislations, programs, and licensures is the highly qualified teacher.

A Master’s degree in has thus become a must for aspiring teachers, and with many of them already employed as regular teachers, master online special education degree has become the most convenient route to this profession.

What It Involves

Master online special education degree involves distance or online learning that leads to graduate degrees like Master of Education (MEd), Master of Science (MS), Master of Arts (MA), or any of the specialized master’s degrees in various sub-domains, such as dyslexia, attention-deficit, etc.

Master online special education degree courses will last upwards of one year, and might involve significant on-the-job training under an experienced special educator. Most states also require that aspiring teachers pass a licensure test, before starting their career.

Why Special Education?

On an average, teachers in this field don’t earn much more than regular teachers. On the other hand, the job responsibilities of these teachers are more demanding – they can even include defending oneself and the school’s program in court, if dissatisfied parents of challenged students opt for litigation, as has happened numerous times in various states!

Still, about 450,000 educators have opted for and currently work as special education teachers in the country. What must be the attraction?

Teachers in this field are very unlikely to encounter unemployment in the short-term or long-term. But that alone can’t be the lure to enter this profession, where sheer hard work, difficult coordination between many, and uncertain outcomes from the part of students, make life stressful.

The answer can, hence, be only that there are hundreds of thousands of teachers out there who want to make a genuine difference to the lives of these challenged students. And it is indeed a huge difference. According to estimates, four in five challenged students used to be excluded from the US education system, as near as three decades back. Official figures, tabulated around 1975, put this at 1 million students, who missed the bus.

Why Master Special Education Degree?

Teachers in this specialty are still in significant short supply. Because of this, some states have still not made it mandatory for them to have a master’s degree. In such states, bachelor’s degree holders appear for professional licensure exams and work as special education teachers.

However, more and more states are opting for a master’s degree as the minimum qualification, for a simple reason. A special ed. teacher should be capable of interacting effectively with professionals like psychologists, disability therapists, educational evaluators, educational lawyers, supervisors from the school district, regular teachers, and, of course parents of disabled students. It takes a master’s degree holder with significant on-the-job training to confidently undertake this.

Master’s degree holders in this field have also another booming avenue – they can work as instructors in colleges and universities that deliver specialized programs, and these institutions are rapidly increasing in number. They are also eligible to work as supervisors or administrators in the school districts.

A small but significant proportion of educators go for ‘ degree, so as to progress to doctoral degrees, which are also offered by more and more universities, these days.

Lastly, though special education teachers don’t earn much more than regular teachers on an average, the highest salaries drawn by special educators exceed the highest salaries drawn by regular teachers by ,000 to ,000. It goes without saying that almost all of those highest paid special educators are master’s degree holders.

Why Master Online Special Education Degree?

Those planning to take a master’s degree in this field are almost always regular teachers who have developed a fascination for this field. Others include psychologists, counselors, learning disability therapists, etc. Since both teachers and these professionals already hold full time jobs, it is a master online special education degree that is more suitable to them.

Secondly, only an exceptionally good regular teacher can hope to be an effective teacher of special students. Because of this, aspirants enter the regular teaching profession to garner some years of experience before attempting to study special ed. Master online special education degree perfectly fits this scheme.

Thirdly, a significant component of any education master’s degree is on-the-job training in a special school or a regular school’s special education department. Those working teachers who opt for a master online degree can thus modify their school work itself for the on-the-job training part.

Where to Study Master Online Special Education Degree?

Hundreds of universities and colleges across the country offer master online degrees in special ed. They include state or public universities, and private or independent universities. Some of the courses have small components that require occasional campus visits, while almost all require on-the-job training at a school.

Working teachers who opt for master online special education degree generally prefer studying in their own state, if not their city. Another reason for local preference is that some universities incorporate that state’s licensure requirements as part of the course. Due to strict licensure requirements, it is also important to go for an accredited course.

State or Public Universities Offering Master Online Special Education Degree

At least 12 state university systems offer master online degree in special ed. They include Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Aspirants in states like Alabama, Florida, and Kansas, are especially fortunate, with multiple public universities offering the course. Florida perhaps tops the nation with its three public universities offering this degree. Some of the prestigious state universities offering the course across the nation are:

ALABAMA: Auburn University, Auburn, University of South Alabama, Mobile

FLORIDA: Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of West Florida

INDIANA: Ball State University

KANSAS: Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University

KENTUCKY: University of Louisville, Louisville

MICHIGAN: University of Michigan, Dearborn

MISSOURI: University of Missouri, Columbia

NEBRASKA: University of Nebraska, Lincoln

NEW JERSEY: New Jersey City University

NORTH CAROLINA: University of North Carolina

PENNSYLVANIA: Clarion University of Pennsylvania

TEXAS: Texas Tech University

Private or Independent Universities Offering Online Degrees

At least 10 well-known private or independent universities in 8 states offer master online special education degree. These states include Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. Arizona and Iowa top the list with two private universities each, offering the course. Florida and Pennsylvania are perhaps the only two states that have both public and private universities offering the course. Some of the well-known private schools offering online degrees are:

ARIZONA: Grand Canyon University, University of Phoenix

CALIFORNIA: La Sierra University

FLORIDA: Nova Southeastern University

IOWA: Graceland University, Kaplan University

MINNESOTA: Bethel University

VIRGINIA: Regent University

WASHINGTON: City University

What to Expect From Master Online Special Education Degree, in the Future?

The high performance expected from special edd teachers will ensure that a master’s degree in this field becomes an absolute must in all states. As it is working teachers who are more likely to go for a master’s degree in this subject, and because the course itself is dominated by on-the-job training, college degree master online might even upstage regular courses in the subject, in the near future.

Recent stricter regulations from the part of administrations regarding expected student performance, and better awareness about learning disabilities from the part of parents, will make sure that more and more students will be presented for evaluation. This scenario will drive the demand for qualified and trained special educators, giving further momentum to master online special ed. degree courses.

The most likely change in course content will be super-specializations in special education, with probably different master’s degrees built around different learning disabilities or handicaps.

Some Long Island Schools Students Just Want to Go to Work

All parents have big dreams for their children. Fame, fortune, happiness, security, love, confidence, success, and a good education- to name a few. Parents of Long Island Schools students have dreams like these, too. A lot of these kids are told as they grow up that college is what you do after high school, end of discussion. Of course, most if not all parents would like to see their kids head off to college.

But let’s look at the big picture; not all graduating seniors want to head off to a 2- or 4-year college. They are anxious to enter the workforce, earn a paycheck, and are heartily sick of homework. Students attending Long Island Schools represent both goals – both college bound and work bound – but only one of these groups is truly getting the education they need to achieve their goals after high school.

Long Island Schools students are feeling increasing pressure to attend college or a university. Rigorous courses are becoming the norm, and the stress that goes along with the homework and studying for these classes is immense. Long Island Schools students who are planning on heading off to college pretty much have to take these types of classes in order to even get accepted in the school of their choice. In fact, 88% of Long Island Schools graduates enroll in colleges or universities.

But what about the Long Island Schools vocational students? Their schools are experiencing such a drastic amount of cutbacks that they are forced into turning students away from the education they desire. Many Long Island Schools districts have to tell their vocational students that they can’t afford to enroll them in BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) job-training courses in the Fall of 2007. This is happening despite New York’s state regulations which entitle teens access to vocational programs. In fact, state regulations require school districts, including those serving Long Island Schools to provide students with up to two years of BOCES occupational training, free of charge. Therefore, many of these Long Island Schools students are blocked from receiving the training they need to begin their chosen profession.

Long Island Schools officials have voiced regret over the situation, but added that they have little choice. Budgets have had to be trimmed, and the cuts included 0,000 in BOCES tuition. The most likely reason for these cutbacks is the fact that Long Island voters have rejected spending plans twice.

It appears that if the voters who live in the areas which support Long Island Schools do not change their minds, hundreds of vocational students attending one of the many Long Island Schools will lose out on the education they so deserve. Perhaps, when they see their fast food restaurants and discount stores flooded with young high school graduates, they’ll change their minds. I hope so.
