A Young Kid’s Guide to Impressing your Parents With your Rock Music

Face it: many have been the times when you’re lying there in bed, quietly listening to your favorite band – what constitutes “quietly” is, of course, full volume – and your mom, your dad, or, worse yet, both, break into your private domain and yell at you to “turn that damn music doooowwwwn!!” and to “stop listening to those worthless bums”. But, c’mon, isn’t there something you can do to start changing your parents’ minds about what you hold most dear?

Sure! Impress them. Knowing what to say to your parents in these cases, and learning what interesting little piece of rock star history you can shine a light on for this purpose, is of the utmost important when trying to impress dear ole mom and dad. There are many wonderful stories and scrumptious bits of data that will just have your head brimming with enthusiasm, just waiting for your parents to once again try to tell you off.

Going down a list of bands, I’ll mentiono a couple of things you might want to ponder and/or do some more research about:

Queen:

•Freddie Mercury: Ealing Art College– graphic illustration

•John Deacon: Chelsea College – electronics degree

•Roger Taylor: first studied dentistry at London Hospital Medical College and left it in order to get a BSC in Biology at London Polytechnic

•Brian May: this would be the piéce de rèsistance here. He studied at Imperial College London and got his degree in astrophysics. In 2007, he completed his PhD. and was also named Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

The Rolling Stones:

•Mick Jagger: studied economics at the famed London School of Economics but then something got in the way. Namely, the Stones.

•Charlie Watts: went to Harrow Art School, became a commercial artist

•Ron Wood: like Freddie Mercury, he also studied at Ealing Art College.

Kiss:

•Paul Stanley: went to Manhattan School of Music and Art and also to Bronx Community College but gave it up when music started to rear its head.

•Gene Simmons: Richmond College – got a degree in education and is fluent in Hungarian, German, English and Hebrew (and also speaks some Spanish – I know that from personal experience.)

The Police:

•Sting: went to Northern Counties Teachers’ Training College – got a degree in education

•Andy Summers: UCLA – studied classical guitar

•Stewart Copeland: went to California Western University and UC Berkeley

Van Halen:

•Alex Van Halen: briefly went to Pasadena City College to study music

•Michael Anthony: studied music at Pasadena City College

Sheryl Crow:

•University of Missouri – B.A. in Education, Music Composition and Performance

Bon Jovi:

•David Bryan: was studying Pre-Med at Rutdgers University and left it to go to Juilliard (music) instead

We can also add a roster of people who have studied at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, MA:

•John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy –

Dream Theater

•Steve Vai

•Tim Owens (Ripper Owens)

•Al Pitrelli

•Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford – Aerosmith

•Steve Smith – Journey

•Will Calhoun – Living Colour

So there you have it, kids. A small list which can undoubtedly be expanded with some research on your part. But always remember something: it’s really not that important to know if they studied this or that because what they play still reaches your heart. If you parents need some sort of college degree for them to pass favorable judgement on a person then that’s something that perhaps they should have learned in college that it’s wrong.

College Or Pros, What Pays For Young Baseball Players?

College Or Pros, What Pays For Young Baseball Players?

If your son is a professional baseball prospect, you might want to know what makes more sense for him: continue playing at the collegiate level, or turn pro right away. The price where it pays to go pro might surprise you.

Of the four major U.S. sports, only baseball and basketball draft high school and college players together. However, the basketball draft lasts only two rounds and includes players from overseas professional leagues, while baseball provides far more opportunities. The Amateur Baseball Draft lasts ten rounds and includes only high school and college players.

While baseball offers immediate professional opportunities to high school graduates, a minor leaguer ballplayer usually needs three or four years of seasoning to be ready for the major league roster. A player who signs a contract in 2007 and immediately reported to a Rookie League or Class A team should be on the major league roster on or before the 2010 season.

First year salaries for a minor league ballplayer range from 0 a month for the first contract season to ,150 when the player reaches Triple-A, one level below the major leagues. Given the low salaries, the decision to skip college has to depend on the player’s signing bonus and the quality of the college programs that are offering scholarships. It might not pay for a ballplayer to pass on a top college program if the academics are strong enough to help them with life after baseball.

What is a good guideline for a signing bonus for a high school baseball player?

My rule of thumb is that the signing bonus should equal or exceed the projected cost of four years of college plus the major league minimum salary. This assumes the player would remain in college through his senior year-although it is common for baseball players to drop out without completing their degree. At worst, if the player does not make the major leagues, he should have the opportunity to save enough money to pay for college while he toils in the minors.

Following this rule of thumb, a high school player would need to receive a minimum signing bonus of 0,000.

The 0,000 minimum is based on:

• The combined costs: tuition, fees, room and board and essentials at a top private university and traditional baseball powerhouses such as Stanford, the University of Miami, or the University of Southern California approached ,000. It is quite likely that these costs will approach, if not surpass, 0,000 to complete a bachelor’s degree.

• A 2010 major league minimum salary of 0,000, as stipulated in the most recent agreement between the Major League Baseball Players Association and the owners of the all 30 Major League Baseball teams. The 2011 league minimum is not known at this time; it is tied to a future cost of living increase.

How many players chosen in the 2006 Amateur Draft earned the recommended minimum signing bonus of 0,000?

Only the top 60 players received a signing bonus of 0,000 or more. Only 27 were high school players, the rest were college prospects.

What about the ballplayer who has finished some of his college education or completed his degree?

A college player’s signing bonus should, as a minimum, cover the remaining costs of his college education, plus the wages he might have earned by using his degree, but not playing baseball.

The player with a community college degree has already invested in his education; he can use his community college degree to find work, continue his education at a four-year college, or turn pro. The community college graduate might need as much as 0,000 to complete a four-year degree at a private college. His entry-level salary, after completing his bachelor’s degree, might range from ,000 to ,000 depending on grades and course of study, and, this player might still need three to four years of seasoning in the minor leagues.

This player would need a signing bonus in excess of 0,000, but he has a chance of getting a larger bonus if he stays in school and performs well the next season.

The scholarship player who completed his degree can play ball, or use his education to do something else. Like other prospects, he may need some seasoning in the minors–and his salary after three or four years of non-baseball employment could approach, maybe exceed ,000, almost the same as tuition and expenses for college. His bonus should also be in excess of 0,000.

How many college draftees earned the recommended minimum signing bonus of 0,000?

There were 150 prospects who received a signing bonus of 0,000, or more, with the lowest ranked player selected at the top of the fifth round of the draft.

What is the major tradeoff?

The top high school baseball prospect must consider the risk of postponing college against his chances of making a major league roster within four years. It is quite difficult for a professional baseball player to attend college in the off-season because of travel and seasons that overlap into the fall and spring semesters. Top prospects are also encouraged to play winter ball; that also overlaps into study time.

However, the number of high school players who can command the big bonuses that make it pay to go pro is an elite few-and that number fluctuates from year to year because it is based on the annual level of talent in the pool of draft-eligible players.

The top college prospect must consider the opportunities to complete his education and increase his signing bonus after each season of amateur competition. The college prospect will have a degree, but he will be off to a later start in his professional career, especially if he needs seasoning in the minor leagues. However, the college graduate has more options for life after baseball.

Unless the player becomes an established major league star, it would be better for him to build a post-baseball life off a college degree than return home to lament glory days.

THE SECRETS TO LOOKING AND FEELING YOUNG NATURALLY

THE SECRETS TO LOOKING AND FEELING YOUNG NATURALLY

With my thirty fifth birthday just gone, friends and clients are often shocked when I say I have never used any anti aging products, or even had a facial! When I get asked what I do to defy the aging process and my answer tends to surprise people too.

The things I do to ensure I stay young inside and out has nothing to do with defiance and everything to do with health. These are my tips on how you can look and feel young naturally, and without breaking the bank or resorting to torturous methods:

1/ ELIMINATE NEGATIVE SELF-TALK: Self-talk has been shown in research by medical and communication professionals to affect health states. Every time you send a negative thought through your mind you get to feel bad. Every time you feel bad toxic chemicals are released in your brain and travel throughout your body.

This causes bad health. And bad health causes premature aging. So, if you want to live longer, feel healthier and look younger, it’s a good idea to shut down those crappy thoughts and start to feed your mind more useful thoughts that make you feel better more of the time. This is where Richard Bandler’s (creator of NLP) famous mantra comes in handy. Just tell yourself to shut the heck up!

2/ MINIMISE STRESS: Dr. Elissa Epel headed a stress study, at the University of California, San Francisco about 5 years ago. For the first time, research shows that stress speeds the aging process by harming DNA.

Did you ever know someone under so much stress they aged right before your eyes? It seems to happen to presidents after a term or two, and maybe you’ve noticed something similar in your own mirror.

But there’s a silver lining: We can offset the impact of stress. As Brian Colbert, author of The Happiness Habit, says, if you are going to worry, worry constructively.

Start by asking yourself more useful questions such as: what is the most useful thing to do right now? What do I want to happen now? What has to happen for that to happen? What can I do right now to start to feel better and more relaxed? Useful questions lead to useful answers.

3/ FALL IN LOVE: True health starts with acceptance and love for oneself. If you are not happy with yourself or your life right now, it’s important that you appreciate the bits you do like, identify the bits you want to improve on, and do something about it.

As Owen Fitzpatrick, author of Not Enough Hours, says: you are not what you do, you are everything you can become at your very best.

So, it’s useful to always keep improving yourself so that you can love yourself more and become the person you want to be. If you are lucky enough to feel connected to other people, feel respected and valued by other people, and have a sense of belonging, then you may have more than a lot of people in the world. So, one of the keys to staying young is to appreciate and love yourself and life!

4/ LAUGH YOUR WRINKLES AWAY: I’ve heard some celebrities avoid smiling in an attempt to keep wrinkles at bay. In fact, there is evidence to the opposite being true!

Laughter boosts your immune system, decreases pain, relaxes your muscles, and prevents heart disease. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, adds joy and zest to life, eases anxiety and fear, improves mood and enhances resilience. Laughter strengthens relationships, and also makes us more attractive to others!

My tips for a younger more beautiful looking you: watch a funny movie or TV show, go to a comedy club, hang out with funny people, share a good joke or a funny story, host game night with friends, take a laughter yoga class, do something silly for no reason!

5/ LIFT WEIGHTS: I remember watching a program where Oprah went looking for the oldest people in the world in an attempt to discover the secrets to their longevity and good health. From America to Europe to Asia, all of them shared a common denominator: they all stayed extremely active. I clearly remember this centenarian American woman saying she lifted weights every day. And they were not 2lb dumbbells!

Weight training enhances bone and muscle strength, tones up your body and speeds up your metabolism. It also improves balance and co-ordination, burns a whole lot of calories, and it’s been proven to boost your self confidence! All essential ingredients for a young and vibrant body and mind.

6/ EAT WHAT YOU ARE GENETICALLY PROGRAMMED TO EAT: I’ve been lucky to meet Phil Richards, world renowned nutritionist, who works with top Olympic athletes and well known celebrities. I’ve attended his health seminars, had my blood examined by him and picked his brains to no end. It seems that the reason why we are getting older faster is because we are not eating the foods we are genetically programmed to eat.

Apparently, since the caveman era, even though we have technologically evolved to amazing lengths, our digestive system has only evolved about 1%! Phil advices we stick to a diet of clean water, vegetables, nuts, berries, seeds, and protein in the form of good quality eggs, fish and lean meats. Keep it fresh, seasonal and unprocessed, and eat most of your food raw.

7/ QUIT LAYERING CHEMICALS ON YOUR SKIN: Have you ever examined the ingredients list on your regular skin care products? Most of the skin care products that you buy contain harmful chemicals.

These chemicals not only harm your skin, they can also have very bad impact on your health. Most of the ingredients used in skin care products are petroleum by-products and also explosive solvents, carcinogens that can affect your long-term health. They are mainly used by many cosmetic industries because they are cheap and can be easily stored in shelves for many days.

Stay young by avoiding chemicals such as: mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulphate, paraben preservatives, talc, lanolin, artificial fragrances, polyethylene glycol, phenol. Stick to natural face and body products that are made with few ingredients that you can pronounce and understand.

Follow these tips and notice how much more revitalised you feel as you free your beautiful and youthful self!

Young at Heart

Young at Heart

I was 11, sitting at our kitchen table with my father and two sisters, when Dad’s eyes suddenly rolled back in his head. He slumped and fell clean off his chair, hitting the cold tile floor with a thud. The three of us jumped up, shrieking, and I called an ambulance. Dad came to before the paramedics arrived and told us not to worry. ‘It was nothing,’ he said, and then made us swear not to tell our mother.

Fast-forward 12 years. Dad, now 51, is walking around a hospital room with two stents and a pacemaker in his chest, the calling cards of his heart attack. If he (and his doctor) had known back then what I know now, his heart muscle might not have suffered irreparable damage. Passing out, you see, is a sign of arrhythmia, a treatable condition that can cause heart attacks, strokes, even sudden death.

Over the past few years, cardiologists have aggressively started trying to prevent heart disease in at-risk men, rather than treating them only after their blood pumps have broken down. Those patients who follow a preventive treatment program almost always live free of heart attacks. To help you spot subtle risk factors and correct them before they bury you, we compiled this list of things cardiologists wish you knew.

Your Heart’s Mortal Enemy is often Invisible

I was taught at medical school that heart attacks take place when blood vessels have closed gradually, like pipes filling up with sludge. We now know that blockages occur suddenly due to the rupturing of soft plaque. The problem is soft plaque often goes undetected by standard cholesterol tests and exercise stress-tests.

Why it’s so Dangerous

Soft plaques resemble pimples on arterial walls, only instead of being filled with pus, they’re filled with cholesterol, when those ‘pimples’ pop, a small blood clot forms to heal the injury, later forming scar tissue and tiny calcifications along the arterial wall. By then, you’re incubating a heart attack, which strikes when a violent explosion of one of the pustules creates a clot big enough to block an artery.

How to Spot the Problem

If you have a family history of heart disease, schedule a 64-slice CT scan. It’s the only test that snaps pictures of the heart quickly enough to reveal minute calcifications in the coronary arteries. Make sure the scanner has ECG-dose modulation, the latest radiation-limiting technology. If your doctor identifies trouble, you may need to take statins.

How to Defend Yourself

Toss some pecan nuts onto your salad or over your oatmeal. Researchers at Loma Linda University, in California, had 24 people replace 20 percent of their daily kilojoules with pecans for a month and found that the nuts lowered levels of lipid oxidation (the process that turns cholesterol into plaque) by seven percent – enough to help ward off arterial damage. Pecan nuts are rich in gamma-tocopherol, a form of vitamin E that isn’t in supplements. Even just a handful a day can help.

An Untrained Heart Won’t Reach the Finish Line

Not all heart tests need to take place in a lab. In a 23-year study of 6 000 men published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers revealed that the greatest predictor of death from heart attack was the ability of a man’s heart rate to adapt during and after a workout. The faster your heart rate goes down after exercise, the healthier you are.

Why it’s so Dangerous

Men whose heart rates didn’t drop by at least 25 beats per minute (bpm) within a minute of finishing an intense workout, were more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than those whose heart rates dropped efficiently. The reason? How your heart adapts to exercise is a good indication of how well it will respond to the extreme stress produced before and during an actual infarction.

How to spot the problem

Do 10 minutes of sprints, check your heart rate, then check it again a minute later. It should ideally have dropped by at least 25 beats.

How to defend yourself

Improve your heart-rate variability by applying the principles of interval training to your lifting regime. Wear a heart-rate monitor and don’t end your first set until the monitor reads 160bpm. Then wait till it drops below 130bpm to begin your next set.

You’ve Never Heard of the Cholesterol that wants you Dead

Researchers now realize that the size of cholesterol particles is even more important than their number. Small particles of lipoprotein(a), a type of LDL (the bad stuff), are a particularly damaging form of cholesterol. These particles are smaller and they have a tail, making it easier for them to sneak into the arterial wall.

Why it’s so Dangerous

A study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reveals that people with high lipoprotein(a) levels are 10 times more likely to suffer heart attacks than those with lower levels.

How to spot the problem

Ask your doctor to schedule a lipoprotein(a) test (most medical aids will cover it, but check with your particular one). This blood test will tell you how much of this dangerous cholesterol is present in your blood. An ideal level is below 10 milligrams per deciliter.

How to Defend Yourself

Diet, exercise and even statins have proven ineffective against lipoprotein(a). But in a review of eight years of studies of prescription niacin, Dutch researchers determined that swallowing two grams of this potent B-vitamin lowered lipoprotein(a) by 17 percent and raised the number of large HDL particles by 18 percent. Ask your doctor for a slow-release version of niacin – it has been found to produce fewer side effects.

Carbohydrates, not fat, are the real Heartbreakers

The more carbohydrates you consume, the higher your blood sugar and, in turn, your levels of the hormone insulin, which stores glucose in the liver and muscles to lower blood-glucose levels in times of excess. But excess insulin may also increase your risk of heart disease. The inflammatory process leading to hardening of the arteries is mediated through insulin.

Translation: high levels of insulin boost your body’s production of stress hormones, which send blood pressure skyrocketing. That increased pressure damages the arterial wall, making it easier for cholesterol to slip inside.

Why it’s so Dangerous

Insulin may not act alone. It is thought that the excess carbohydrates that cause insulin to spike are also turned into triglycerides in your liver. And the more triglycerides there are circulating in your bloodstream, the more lipoprotein(a) – the lethally small cholesterol -  you’re likely to have.

How to spot the problem

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University, in Maryland, showed that for every one percent increase in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc), an indicator of long-term blood-sugar levels, patients experienced a 14 percent increase in the risk of heart disease. If there is a history of diabetes in your family, schedule an HbAlc test. If you have levels in excess of 4.6 percent of total hemoglobin, consider reviewing your diet and talking to your doctor about taking drugs to lower your blood sugar.

The University of Iowa, Tom Brokaw, and Why Every Student (Young and Old) Should do their Research

The University of Iowa, Tom Brokaw, and Why Every Student (Young and Old) Should do their Research

This past weekend while watching the Michigan vs. Iowa Football game there was a commercial on for one of the Universities that I couldn’t get out of my head, even after the Wolverines’ crushing defeat (and it didn’t help that QB Tate Forcier suffered a concussion either.)

I’m speaking of the recent University of Iowa ads featuring famed broadcaster, Tom Brokaw.  Currently running on a national level, these ads feature the narration skills of the future Hall-of-Fame Broadcaster reciting lines of (Tradition, Respect) same old stuff every other University today does with their commercials to lure unworthy undergraduates and chad-swinging freshman to their schools.

However, when you elect to have a Alumni read something for your institution, you would expect to see a graduation date at the end of the TV ad…or at least the name of the person talking, to gain accreditation for your abilities to get someone to a level of fame (like Brokaw himself).  However, at the end of this ad, there is nothing but “University of Iowa.”  So the question is…why don’t they let people know?

It might be because Mr. Brokaw in fact never graduated from the University of Iowa.  Brokaw himself dropped out after he was unsatisfied with the atmosphere there, saying he majored in “beer and co-eds”. Later, Mr. Brokaw received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of South Dakota in 1964. Besides that, Mr. Brokaw has also been awarded honorary degrees from:

Boston College; Brandeis University, the California Institute of Technology; College of William & Mary; Dartmouth College; Duke University; Emory University; Fairfield University; Fordham University; Florida State University; Johns Hopkins University; Northwestern University; Providence College; Saint Anselm College; University of Notre Dame; University of Oklahoma; University of Pennsylvania; along with Washington University in St. Louis.

Thus, the question I pose to ask is…why University of Iowa?  Why would you have an Alumnus who was unsatisfied with his education at your institution, come back and do a nationally televised commercial?  (Probably because they figured no one would connect the voice to Brokaw and take the time to look it up.) If you knew he was willing to do it…why not give him an honorary degree just for doing that?!?!?  I mean, Emory University gave the man a degree! (And I’m sure it’s a fine school)

So today, I call upon the heads of the University of Iowa to realize exactly what a bad example they have set by having a former dropout lead the way for future students to come to the school and by all guesses, probably major in exactly what Mr. Brokaw did….(“beer and co-eds”)

Nevertheless, there is the result, and I’m sure that when the call actually came from the University of Iowa 46 years after Mr. Brokaw dropped out of the institution, Tom probably dignifiedly just sat back in his chair, recalled his days at the school, took a look at the 19 degrees hanging on his wall, and chuckled.
